This is why i chose Dreaming Spanish as my method. You just sit back, watch/listen/read and there's no stress. No optimization no nothing. No Anki, nothing. At the end of the day, if you just listen enough and pay as much attention as you can (no one can pay attention 100%. It's humanly impossible) , you'll learn the language.

Amen Brotha! Don't let optimal be the enemy of good enough! I just do what I enjoy and that's it. No more no less. I take a Steve Kaufman style approach of just immersing and consuming content that I personally find enjoyable. Sometimes the content is way above my level, sometimes it's in my sweet spot, sometimes it's learner material. Sometimes Anki, sometimes, reading, sometimes grammar study. At the end of the day none of it mattered because I reached a good level of fluency and I enjoyed the process the entire time. Not once was it ever a grind but I know that I did a lot of things "Not optimal". Still got there though!

you hit the nail on the head. Its sometimes more fun to learn about how to learn a language than it is to actually learn it. I have fell victim to this many times and recently i ditched anki completely and switched to just reading and found that i still learn and its so much less stressful. I was doing anki reps but not having much time to actually engage in the language. I still feel like i learn at the same pace if not faster because i enjoy what i do.

Sir, you are brilliant. The bottom line is that effort is required. 20 years ago when I started my German and Spanish studies in college, it would take me six or seven hours to write 150 word paper. Those early papers would then come back to me as if someone had slit their wrist over the page due to all the red correction ink. I kept at it three years later I had zero grammar or spelling mistakes. My intro, German book would literally fall open to the pages with the adjective declensions. My Spanish book would follow to the preterite and imperfect or por y para explanations, because I was somehow confused by them perpetually. I just kept going… it’s curious to me that we encourage children to try and try again yet we as adults lose sight of the fact that making real world mistakes is the most effective way of improvement. It’s far easier to steer a moving car than a parked one.

Sometimes I feel that some people want to optimise their learning to skip doing the actual work. They want to have something that is so optimal that it cuts down the time to almost nothing, so they can achieve B2 or C1 without too much effort. However, we all know the truth, the language learning path is not a short one.

thanks for this video. i’m early on in my study and i hate the idea that Anki is so critical for language aquisition. people learned language without it for almost all of history and i feel the same that contact with the language is the most important indicator of success. good luck with your studies and looking forward to the next update .

My thoughts exactly. Anki can definitely be useful and can help. I in fact used Anki for the first year of my studies. But it is in no way necessary and can often get in the way considering the love for Anki can be pretty divisive.
@osoperezoso2608 Жыл бұрын
Anki is absolutely not necessary as he said. Just immerse, chill, get your consistent hours in.

It seems like Anki can be Book Knowledge compared to immersion being the real deal! ❤

Very good Video. This was slightly different from your normal stuff, but it was really good. It had "KZbinr vibes" lmao.

I agree. Not to get into a duolingo debate lol but im happy to have fun on duo instead of focusing serious time with some more hardcore app. It may take me more time because im not going hard on myself. ill get there either way, it just may take longer.

I've probably spent 500 hours just reading and watching videos ABOUT language learning. Such a waste.

I tried to copy youtuber's methods, but didn't work. Only the big principles stayed (immersion, have fun, consistent ect).

I’m so grateful for your vids and POV as someone who’s actually done the work and purely for the fun of it (which is how most of us start - I LOVE languages and the goal of fluency) but a lot of folk are trying to sell some ish - not that it’s a bad thing but sometimes it’s hard to tell if they’re _really_ trying to help or just flex on us, sell a dream etc I sometimes think I found the CI method/your vids too late as I would’ve loved to have started it earlier but I was one of those ppl that spent a LOT of time researching before doing (best app, quickest way, fluent in 30 days, best way, “sPeAk FiRsT you gotta make mistakes!” etc etc) and because I’ve got so many apps/resources for whatever mood I’m in) it’s hard to tell which method helped the most so I’m still none the wiser about what got me to my current level! Maybe I wouldn’t have even been receptive at first anyway and been a bit 🤨 cos it seems almost too easy/it takes patience hence why watching your journey has been perfect to find now. I do agree that as times gone on, I’ve enjoyed not taking myself so seriously and going back to enjoying input again rather than stressing about progress and taking the fun out of it. Active hrs is such a better metric but I’m glad the research has helped me find good resources for my CI journey that I appreciate *so* much more now. Just know you’re reaching ppl in a good way. Thanks for sharing your journey

As its getting closer to three years of learning spanish and I can almost understand most spanish thats being spoken when i focus only on it and dont try and translate I realize it doesnt matter if i do 10 hours a day but there still are some questions I wanna know like is listening to a language int he background really effective like matt vs japan did or the ajatt creator did all the time. I juts wonder if I do listen to it all the time if it will become effortless but now I dont even go out of my way to speak it tbh as my goals were just for media and reading reasons. Though as i just immerse in general to languages like portuguese, french, and now thai from comprehensible thai channel. I just dont care if I understand and stop thinking or translating in general to juts understand the meaning as a sort of test to see what I went wrong with and the frustration I had with spanish as my first language (for like the 100th time as I was fluent in the past many times at many different levels in different areas). Its a fascinating experiment to see how I can understand the language without knowing what the word is in my native language or other languages. i just understand it! haha

For me background listening is fairly pointless in the beginning. But gets more and more useful the more advanced one gets in their target language. And also, it is generally mainly effective when you can comfortably follow the points while doing other things. If the main activity takes too much mental focus to comfortably follow the immersion material. Then it is pretty pointless and only getting in the way of what you're trying to do at that point.

No one wants to hear that it's going to take a few years. Everyone want's it to take a couple of months. I know, because that was me. I thought I could do it in about 6 months and now that I'm 9 months deep, I understand that it's actually going to take me about two years to get where I want to be. And that is fine with me because at this point I've got too much invested to quit. That's why most people only last a few weeks before throwing up their hands.
