Things got emotional when we sat down to talk to 3 dads and 3 sons about why it is that they don't tell each other "I love you." What are your thoughts on this?

I just turned 24. My Mexican dad has never told me he loves me. But I’ve seen him struggle and huddle for the roof over my head. His actions speak to me. This video brought me to tears. I love my pops.

My dad didn't call me by my first name until I was 16. He always just called me "Boy" as in "Get up Boy, we're mowing the lawn" or "Come on Boy, we're checking the oil in your mom's car" I am the oldest and I never knew why he treated me different than my brother and sister. When I was 16, I woke up to use the restroom and realized that that it had froze the night before. I woke up early the next day to scrape off the ice from everyone's car so we could go to work/school. I was eating breakfast when my dad went out with the scraper.....he came back in, put the scraper by the door, and said "Good work Jack." Still one of my favorite dad/son moments. Mexican dad's don't say "I love you" but they let you know it in subtle ways yo.......

A lot of fathers in those situations wouldn’t do anything because they think “oh I can’t take them to Disneyland or the movies so why bother?” But the truth is fathers like at least did SOMETHING. Doing something with your kids is better than nothing. My fondest memories with my dad were just going to the park, hun teaching me to ride my bike, playing soccer in the backyard. All stuff that are FREE. You are a great dad ❤️

Also nos toca a nosotros quererlos y decirles cuanto los queremos y asi enseñarles que si se puede decir un Te Quiero Mucho y ser fuerte a la vez 🙏💖 bediciones a tu apa

When I tell my dad "Te quiero 'apá" he just says "igualmente" 😂. From little to teenage years I always wore hand-me-downs. When I went into highschool I asked him for a new pair of jeans and he said ok. Next day he told me to go with him, I thought he was taking me to the mall but no, he took me to work with him (he is a handyman). He took me for a week and then he paid me, he said "Toma, te has ganado tu dinero para los jeans". Best life lesson I had. Love him to death for showing me how to work. He has never personally told me but my family says that he tells them I'm still his little girl, I'm 38 now.

Many mexican fathers had a hard life and grew up dirt poor. Their parents never told them that they loved them. A lot of fathers don’t say this because they never knew what that felt like. It’s important you become aware of it though and tell your loved ones these words to let them know because you may never get another chance to do it. Like many things, death is unpredictable so it’s best to do it while we’re still alive and breathing.

Yes. My father lost his father when he was a baby and had other two younger brothers. He had to work at age 11 while studying. He didn't have anyone to look after him because my grandmother was busy working. So I think mexican people get to understand why their parents don't say "I love you" that often. They didn't learn how to do that.

This is a hard topic. I’m about to watch the video but can definitely say, that as a Hispanic young woman, I wish my mom would be more encouraging, supportive, and actively listen to me when I speak. We get into so many arguments over her poor listening/communication skills, and we hardly say “I love you” to each other.

The ones that dont say it are the ones that love you the most. Sometimes we forget to say it because we like to think our actions speak louder than words. Sometimes people have lied to us and used up words to the point where we think they are meaningless and rather show than say. But we forget how words still mean something to others.

My dad didn’t have much of a childhood. He quit school in the 7th grade to work the fields.He had to raise his 6 brothers and sisters at 19. His mom died and his dad left the family. my grandfather went to jail when my dad was 17. he was super abusive and was a drunk so my dad lived a hard life even in childhood. because of this, my dad didnt have anyone to teach him how to become an adult. he became involved with gangs, drugs (no hard drugs just the simple stuff), alcohol. it was hard but when he had my sister at 18, decided he needed to change. he didnt really get to it but then he had me 2 years later. then he realized he needed to change for both of us so that we could be safe. he is now getting his bachelors degree in business, about to buy his first house, and is pretty happy. he doesn´t tell me i love you often, but he does tell me and show me enough for me to know how much he really does love me

Kristina Williams In Spanish, the augmentative form of a noun is formed by appending the letter “n” to the end of a word that ends with an “o”, and adding an accent above the “o” to increase the intensity of the word and sometimes yield a slightly different meaning. In this case, viejo is used with a double meaning; initially it’s used as “my old man/father,” and it’s subsequently used as viejón to mean something with characteristics even greater and more apparent than that of the original noun. In Mexican culture, men are raised to be patriarchs and providers for the family, teaching responsibility to their children and never demonstrating vulnerability or weakness (trust me I’m Mexican descent). In the case of viejón, the son is emphasizing that his father is a textbook father, the ultimate one, one that he admires to the fullest. Viejón can also have a side meaning in emphasizing older age, but in this case it’s understood that the word was used in the first case, and less so in the second. He’s using it as a term of endearment. Cheers!

Vitoriano The B.C-Low Yes, I’m familiar with it to a certain degree after having taken 3 semesters of college Portuguese; I found it relatively easy to understand Brazilian Portuguese since I speak Spanish natively. I’m not too sure of the endings in Portuguese for the augmentative form (I think the feminine ending is -ona, correct me if I’m wrong), but I am pretty sure of the diminutive form which is I believe -inho and -zinho, depending on the ending of the word. Again, correct me if I’m wrong!

I grew up without my dad and only my mom to guide me. I didn’t know most of the things that fathers are supposed to teach their kids. Today, I have a little 7 year old son and a 10 month old baby girl with another in the belly. I constantly struggle asking myself, “am I doing this right or enough?” I let my kids know I love them everyday so they grow up to be better than me and not make the same mistakes I had done. I’m sitting in my car outside my home before I go in to wipe my tears and put on a smile cause I want my kids to know that I’ll always love them for the rest my of my life. I go back to this video every now and then to remind myself not to be emotionless and to love forever.

I had a girlfriend in college who was so loving and positive with her entire family. She never spoke one negative word about them. Even her very minor annoyances were minor and insignificant. I could tell that she grew up in a very loving and nurturing environment. She never failed to call her siblings and her parents on Sundays. It was their little tradition, just a small gesture out of love and respect. And she’d end every conversation with “I love you, goodbye”. I internalized just how different she expressed her emotions than me. I loved my parents and I knew they loved me, but we rarely ever said it so casually. Usually only for major events. With her, I realized that you didn’t have to wait until something dramatic or emotional to say it. It was just a simple gesture to express her love and appreciation. And I began doing it with my own family. I knew it would be weird at first because I was introducing a new pattern. I told my family what I’d noticed with how my girlfriend had such a strong bond with her family and that I wanted to try to strengthen our own bond. And I acknowledged that it would be kind of strange at first, but that I would still like to try it. It was a little strange the first few times, but we never hesitate to tell one another just how much we love and appreciate each other. That new pattern has been going on for decades now. We always express our love and gratitude and support for each other. It’s a simple little gesture that means a lot in the long run. Even though I never doubted my parents love for me, telling each other “I love you” at the end of every phone conversation is just a tiny bit more reassuring. I’m only saying this because I came from a family where we never said these things before and now we say it all the time. So it’s definitely possible. Just in case anyone wanted to give it a shot. It might feel strange the first few times, but it’s so worth it. I highly encourage it. Nothing will ever take the place of the love and support you have with your parents. Your bond will only strengthen over time.
@alexarango
@alexarango 3 жыл бұрын
Mad respect to you for breaking the traditions and creating that new pattern. I feel like our community would be much more successful if we had that kind of support. The kind of support that builds a person's confidence and helps them be successful. Too many times I've heard Latinos call each other "dumbass" and say that it's out of endearment. That's BS. We should really be encouraging, supportive, and loving out of endearment and change our stereotypical image of low-class and uneducated people to the hard-working and resilient people that we really are.

If you try really hard to forgive it will help you in life to overcome those memories, thats the cycle to break. Your parents had it rough and they didn't forgive their parents and understand that they were taught or exposed to traumatic things that was difficult for them and wasn't strong enough to overcome it and resorted to what they know, alcohol, yelling and physical abuse etc.. doesn't make it right for them but to judge and hate doesn't help you. If you reflect on yourself you will see some traits of them or your emotionally driven(angry fast, etc) try to overcome through forgiveness and if you can take it a step up and apologize for hating them for how they treated you. Give it a shot while they are still alive. God Bless

It's because most Latino men are taught that saying "I love you" to their sons is soft or weak. Let's face it, most Latino men are emotionally broken. Get them drunk, though and then you'll see just how emotional they are. It's not their fault, this is generations upon generations of hyper machismo crap that really doesn't help with anything except going to jail, developing alcoholism, or worse. But that broken spirit was put there by the powers that be.

@Yha1000itz

My father could commonly say "Te quiero" but no ""Te amo". Which both means "I love you". I love you sounds more like "Te amo". So just for that, I never say "I love you" to anyone who is not a woman that is not my romantic interest. Is just language aspects that are beyond words. English is not the language I use to express my feelings. I actually prefer to use Italian (I don't speak Italian) for that, like dedicating a romantic song. We usually see English as a cold language, far from our emotions. Now, with all that being said, as far as I had seen, most Hispanic men basically never express their feelings with words, but with actions. It is not like other groups. We had been also taught that words have no meaning if there are no actions behind that. I remember that many parents tell their daughters to not believe everything a man say, because could be lying. They need to see towards their actions. As many men "Tienen una muy buena labia para seducir". I don't know what labia means in English, but is basically the skill to seduce or convence someone by using the correct words or expressions towards a specific target. So, man could not use words to express your feelings, but their actions. It is not because "Latino men" are emotionally broken. It is because in our culture, we (men) don't express love with words, but actions. Trying to change that is a way of colonization and destroy Hispanic Masculinity. Comparing that to "Machismo" is basically a foreigner idea.

They softened him and he wants to make sure they know exactly how he feels about them every single day until the day he dies and I couldn’t be more grateful. It melts my heart. My father adores us but got into the habit of not saying it so we didn’t say it either as we grew up. We don’t hug usually but recently we’ve gotten much closer and I’d like to thank the kids for that. They brought us all together. I made sure when I had kids to shower them with the I love you’s and break that cycle.... and because my dad says it to them too now they get even more love. Life is good!
