Why is soundness test done for cement?
The ability of cement to retain its volume after it gets hardened is known as Soundness of Cement. That means the cement should be at minimum volume change after it gets hardened. The test conducted to identify the excess amount of lime in cement is known as soundness test of cement.
Le Chatelier Apparatus test is used to determine the presence of unburnt lime (CaO). The Cracks developed in the structure are mostly due to the unburnt lime because it increases the volume of the cement. Lime and magnesia also react with water and thus increase in volume occur in the cement.
