Whether or not you believe he’s the greatest heavyweight champ, I think we can all agree that Lennox Lewis is the only heavyweight champ who would give EVERY other all time great a tough fight. The guy just doesn’t have a bad stylistic matchup. While I do think Ali and Louis are the heavyweight ‘GOATs’, they still have opponents who can perfectly counter their styles. Norton is the nightmare matchup for Ali, for example. If we’re talking about the ‘baddest’ man in terms of intimidation I think that title will always be held by Charles L. ‘Sonny’ Liston.

@@H-tr1od lol his main point about Lennox is that his skills+size beat everyone. He may not be as good as Ali or as big as Fury but he’s overall got them in that type of equation. @@PacoFTW By making the argument he's not "as skilled" as Ali, you show a fundamental lack of knowledge on the subject. In the highest levels of the sport skillsets are varied and thus creates matchups that are interesting. Frazier, Norton, Holmes, and Tyson are all skilled but stylistically differ. It'd be like acting Duran is less skilled than Leonard because Leonard's showy style lends more towards the casual's perspective on skill than Duran's effective close-quarters slipping and pressure-fighting.

People put a big emphasis on how much bigger the modern heavyweights are but then we got dudes like Usyk and Wilder who both come in at around 220 and never feel undersized compared to their competition. Also, I think there is an argument to be made that a lot of modern heavyweights might cut more weight if they had to fight a 15 round fight over a 12 round fight. My point is that while Lewis is bigger than a lot of the older heavyweights that isn't as huge of an advantage as people make it out to be. Lewis is certainly skilled but to say he's just outright more skilled than Liston and company doesn't do justice to how a fight might play out. I actually agree with your thesis that in a 10 fight series, Lennox probably beats anyone. I’ve actually said the exact same thing myself before. But I have to take issue with your saying that Oliver McCall had a breakdown and cried because Lennox was so good/‘bad’. Oli McCall was suffering majorly from addiction and mental health issues and had been literally pulled out of rehab to fight without him wanting to. Lennox played no part in what happened to Oli that night. If you’d put him in with a cardboard cut out he’d still have had a breakdown. Other than that one thing, this was a really great video. @Elis RF Vitali was mainly from a kickboxing background (6 time world champion) not boxing. Chris Byrd's "victory" over Vitali is more legit then Lennox's because it was him that quit, not the referee. Vitali's cut was no worse than Fury's when he fought Otto Wallin and both were from punches. Why was one stopped but not the other? As a 40 year old, Wladimir signed to have a rematch with Tyson Fury in 2016 and it was Fury who ultimately ducked. As a 37 year old Lennox ducked Vitali despite his eye being independently cleared to fight by a doctor of Lewis's choice but Lennox refused Why? Lennox Lewis fought the 1993 Pound For Pound Number 1 Fighter Evander in November 1999 when he was 37 and washed up. Why? Likewise, he didn't go near 1990 p4p Number 1 Mike Tyson until 2002. I have Lennox pretty high up as far as best HW boxers go (probably 2) and you made some great points. But I think you rely too much on his size, and never question his chin. Don't forget he was knocked out by Oliver Mccall in the second round of their first fight. Also it is well known that Mccall was going through personal issues and had a meltdown because of those said issues, and he may have some mental issues going on as well. Going back on his chin, Mccall is pretty strong no question, but imagine what a prime Foreman, Mike Tyson, or even a present Deontay could do. Just because Ali was able to weather George's storm does not mean that Lennox is able to do the same with the same effect. In fact I don't think any boxer has Ali's durability.

@@greenfields1221 According to the rules it was a KO if you don't beat the 10 count. But yes technically not knocked out unconscious though. Fighters say a lot of things especially when it comes to losses. He also called Rahman and McCall lucky punches. Which is a bad excuse and there's no such thing in boxing as a lucky punch. I highly doubt he could've continued. He could've been seriously hurt his legs were wobbling and he leaned on the Ref that's against the rules. Imo and many others the Ref saved him from further punishment and humiliation. Credible guys in the sport like Gil Clancy. Said Lewis would've fell if the Ref wasn't holding him up. Even if the Ref allowed it. There's not much Lewis and his trainer would be able to do in the next two rounds against McCall and Emmanuel Steward. That was the correct appropriate stoppage.

But no huge problems. You're right will never know. I'm just saying the majority and credible people in the sport. Don't think it would've went that well and it was a appropriate stoppage. Steward would've just shut Lewis and his trainers game plan down again. One of the reasons Lewis fired his past trainer giving him terrible advice in that fight. Imo that Bruno fight was a slop fest Lewis slipping throwing wild shots the excessive rabbit punching by both. Then finally Bruno running out of stamina his jab and Lewis power shots was the only thing consistent in the fight. Don't get me wrong entertaining style but flawed with bad habits. Emmanuel Steward changed his game for the better. Steward a great offensive coach had a knock too and criticism as a bad defensive coach. Tommy Hearns, Michael Moorer, Gerald Mcallen and other Kronk fighters had leaky defense and would suffer vicious KOs. Lewis and I guess the Kiltchos too were sort of exceptions.

@@greenfields1221 He most likely was hurt by Bruno more longer grueling fight. When you're knocked out or stun like that it doesn't exactly hurt your senses and legs just go. Foreman kinda explained this with Lyle. But I feel like everyone in boxing or personal experiences knows getting knocked out doesn't necessarily hurt. Surprisingly Bruno had huge fists even for boxing. He's like in the top 10 biggest hands in boxing 13in I believe under Primo and Liston followed by Bowe and Lewis.

Ref replied no shit you're not fighting at the moment you've had time to recover. Idk if it was exactly 10 seconds. He had his arms out looking at the crowd in shock but was still in the refs arms leaning against him. Lewis had plenty of time to recover before they interviewed him after the fight. Again will never know. But imo even if he continued Steward and McCall would put him back in that same spot again and most likely end it in the next two rounds. Unfortunately

@@greenfields1221 I wouldn't say no way like you said will never know. Steward did a breakdown of Lewis's style in the HBO pre fight for the rematch. He pretty much said he had Lewis's style beat and said that Lewis was nervous that McCall was crying before the fight and couldn't figure him out. Imo there's nothing Pepe and Lewis would've done against McCall and Steward it was even apparent in the first round. Styles make fights. Buster Douglas beat McCall too. Just because someone has five losses doesn't mean they'll necessarily lose the next big fight that's what upsets are for. It's like saying Lewis can't beat prime Tyson Bowe and Holyfield or other Greats because he lost in devasting fashion to two perceived journeymen. That's not how boxing works at all. Mercer is in that discussion of greatest chins. But Holyfield was the first one to put Mercer on the canvas. Lewis couldn't do that with Holyfield or Mercer and he has twice as much punching power as them. Holyfield is perceived to have no punching power atleast by Foreman despite him dropping Mercer, Tyson, Bowe and others. Foreman unfortunately was pointed out for his harsh comments and bitterness towards Holyfield over the years after his first lost to Bowe and third lost. He was even corrected for his blown-up cruiserweight statement by Jim Lamply of all people saying you didn't beat him. Foreman had more stamina than he did in his prime and couldn't even drop Holyfield. Like I said styles make fights.

TJ, Lets first define the GOAT. Who would you put your money on in their prime to beat anybody in a heavyweight boxing fight (No Known Opposition) ? For those in the know their are 3 : - Lenox Lewis (6"5 - 245lb) - George Foreman (6"4 - 245lb) - Ike Ibeabuchi (6"2 - 240lb) (Vitali 4th for me unfortunately) These 3 would clearly beat the rest on most occasions (There is always a lucky punch). But who would win most often amongst those 3 ? For me it is Ike Ibeabuchi. I think overall he was too strong, had far too much stamina. It is likely In many of the fights Ike would wear Lennox and George out and then finish them. Remember even David Tua could not make Ike back up. So how often could Lennox or George ? Ike was too strong to hold, and once he got inside on either of them it would be over. So under the defined criteria the "Greatest Heavyweight of all time" is Ike Ibeabuchi. So in your presentation you did not mention the GOAT once. Well now I leave it too Rummy's Corner "You Don't know Shit About Boxing".

I fully agree with this! Olympic super heavyweight Gold medalist and Undisputed 3-time Heavyweight Champion of the World Lennox Lewis is indeed THE man who could defeat ANY man in boxing history. Lewis was in every word closest to a complete big man heavyweight. PROS: + He had incredible physical strength, + Great punch-power, + A strong jab, + A varied boxing style, + A wide arsenal of punch-combinations, + Great reach advantage and knowledge how to use it to its fullest, + Size advantage with knowledge how to use it against any opponent, even if taller opponent he could adapt with it + Great ring IQ and a strong fight mentality with equal strong heart. + Solid job on his fetes, never lose any balance despite having a wide arsenal of punches and styles. + A good chin = Vitali Klitschko, Shannon Briggs, Ray Mercer, Frank Bruno gave Lewis all they could give and Lewis took it all and dished back more. (Side note: ANY boxer can get KO'd if hit with a powerful punch you did not expect and in his whole career he was down only 2 times (!) and up before 9 in one of them. Ali, Tyson, Holyfield, Fury, Wilder, Holmes, Liston, Frazier etc was ALL knocked down more times in there careers.) + A bloody revenge hungry man who would climb mountains to get his revenge with interest in a rematch = Oliver McCall & Hasim Rahman both suffered out-classing and out-powering performances in the rematches. CONS: - Could be distracted with other more lucrative opponents when fighting an opponent he felt offered nothing to him. TWICE in his career he happened in this bubble and TWICE he paid the price for underestimate his opponents abilities. Despite Lewis avenged both those losses to prove he was the better man, it was still a flaw he proved to be repeated, but Lewis was far from the only champion to suffer this problem in his career. Tyson, Foreman, Holmes, Ali, W. Klitschko etc-etc all landed in this trap. OVERALL: Lennox Lewis was a boxer who could fight any style and any size and come out victorious. When Lewis was at his game, you would eat leather. Lewis was so strong and so dangerous landing his punches that he could flatten any man. More was that he was all so natural and had since kids days a fighters mentality and proven early a gifted athlete in several sports such as football, basketball and boxing + very good at chess play! Lewis was a promising athlete talent all the way up to high-school but choose dangerous boxing because again - he was a fighter at heart! Lewis could so intelligently analyze his opponents and possible opponents and near at gecko knew how he would box or fight them in the ring and the better challenge, the better he fought! Even when under tough pressure (Klitshko, Mavrovic, Bruno) he would suck it up and find a way to change the whole gameplay to his fight and overturn his opponents. The Klitschko fight who was at his oldest stage of career, at his worst prepared stage of a fight, and had just 2 weeks shy accepted him as his replacement challenger, Lewis could still take on a prime aged Klitschko and change the tide. The full bloody cut caused by punches sure was the stop-reason, but Lewis was in any way coming back in the game and had started to really hammer him down with dog-fighting and taking away his reach advantage. Vitali was as tough as they come no doubts as he really gave Lewis an early beating as Lewis was to custom to have the reach advantage, but he was stiff and style-wise limited and only liked to box with distance. When Lewis understood he could not box Vitali with distance boxing, he took away that, he got Vitali with punches from inside, uppercuts and short-crosses. And Lewis was at career worst shape here with being heavy, slow reflexes and had not had time to proper analyze Vitali = A prime Lewis in full condition would have been far-far better. Vitali had studied Lewis, but he was also never a boxer who did that much. Lewis did that a lot to opponents he took seriously and could offer him a challenge. Tyson, Rahman 2, Tua, Holyfield, Grant etc are fighters Lewis had greatly analyzed and there off the great results Lewis would have had a perfect undefeated career IF he would have not landed in over-seeing his two freak-career losses to McCall and Rahman. Both men was hard hitting boxers who could give any big man a challenge, especially McCall who in his entire 75 PRO fight career NEVER went down to the canvas but non of the men had the tools to be THE better man over Lewis in the ring as Lewis proved in the rematches he was twice there man with out-boxing them and out-powering them as well to the fullest. Especially Rahman was schooled as Lewis promised to finish him off in 4 rounds and did so. To many people are bashing on Lewis for petty related things that hold little to no weight to it. Lewis was the best of his era and cleaned house convincingly and even in defeat, he came back stronger and avenged them soundly and proved those losses was closer to a fluke then anything else. Riddick Bowe avoided Lewis his whole career despite that he was obligated in 1992 to fight him and again in 1996 and 1997 again they would face-off each-other but Bowe then suddenly retires at prime age. Lewis then fights Golota who twice had out-boxed Bowe and Lewis flatten him in 1 round! Mike Tyson (who like Bowe was both younger then Lewis) avoided Lewis for years as they should have fought in 1996 but Lewis was sidelined. Then sidelined again but at least paid $4 million and then Tyson dumped the WBC title like Bowe did 4 years prior. And between 1999-2002 Tyson rather fought easy KO possible opposition then facing Lennox Lewis or Wladimir Klitschko or Chris Byrd or John Ruiz despite being THE man who every one wanted to see fight Lewis, including Lewis himself who saw Tyson as the only man standing from there era left.

Why do you think Lennox Lewis is never in conversations for greatest heavyweights or why he isnt talked about much at all? Do you think the era he was in wasn't strong enough? Do you think that avenging his losses wasn't enough for most people? I'm curious what your thoughts are

Lennox isn't talked about in the HW GOAT conversation because he does not meet the level of greatness of Ali or Louis who are both top 10 P4P, Lennox is probably outside the top 30. That being said, the only HW apart from them that should give any real type of fight with Lennox for the #3 spot is Larry Holmes.

That’s a good video, but I gotta say something about Mike. First of all, I really respect Lewis, but these days Tyson’s becoming pretty underrated. His losses to Douglas and Holyfield were in 1990 and 1996, his prime was in 1985-1989. Breaking down the Douglas loss: Now of course, Douglas had the motivation to defeat Tyson as nobody before, but Tyson was going thru some tough times, he divorced Robin Givens and didn’t train for the Douglas fight like at all and still gave a solid performance. Breaking down the Holyfield loss: First of all, Tyson has been imprisoned for three years, where he couldn’t train at all, he had to start doing it all over again before the McNeeley fight. Of course after prison he wasn’t so powerful, so explosive and fast. He also changed his tactic, being more offensive in the early rounds, but also being less defensive, which led to him finishing all of his after prison fights before the las bell. He dominated over Holyfield for the vast majority of the fight, remember, he wasn’t as good as he was 10 years earlier and would burn out faster due to his new tactic. This is when Evander started head butting Mike, which damaged him pretty much. Later Mike, tired out by his own aggressiveness, got knocked down and then TKOed, I think that if he was more defensive and less offensive he would defeat Evander by UD, remember, a decade after Mike’s prime. Talking about Prime Mike Tyson: Watch some footage of him training, watch some of his fights, Jose Ribalta, Reggie Gross, Trevor Berbick, Mavis Frazier, Pinklon Thomas. Mike was too fast, too explosive, too powerful. His skills, defence, offence and ability to dodge were on another level, he was different, he moved like no one else could, a complete puncher, a perfect fighter. All respect to Lennox, but I just don’t see have he can even potentially defeat Iron Mike in his Prime. Lennox was bigger, had a better reach, Tyson was more powerful, he was faster and could really dodge and overall defend himself with the Peek-a-boo style.

Larry Holmes schooled him almost every round, am telling you, Lennox Lewis ain't all that, Ali, sonny Liston, George foreman, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, ken Norton, Mike tyson in his prime, riddick bowe, Mike weaver, Ron Lyle, Ernie shavers, Cleveland Williams, all would knock him out, the guy can't take a punch like that.

It’s really impossible to say how Lewis would do in a best out of ten against anybody because he never even had a trilogy. The same goes for any fighter who hasn’t actually fought 10 rematches against the same fighter at any point. Lewis was good in rematches, but in the second fight against Holyfield, he wasn’t dominant. The only people that can fairly be assessed in a 10 out of ten are guys like Sam Langford, Harry Wills, Joe Jeannette, and other historical heavyweights who had rivalries that didn’t end in 1-3 fights.

Wladimir is actually criminally underrated. His accolades are amazing and even if the era he reigned in was weak there are still top notch. Vitali, widely considered the better one by fans (not by experts) fought in the same era, and couldn't achieve half of the things his brother did. He had a phenomenal jab, one of the best straight rights in heavyweight history and a great left hook. His chin tho was his biggest flaw and when hit right, he would go down. However, he had a big heart, despite being dropped multiple times, never finished the fight on the canvas. His skill level helped him cover this flaw tho, which says a lot about his ring IQ. On top of all that, he did everything the champion should do - defend his title against top opposition. He beat 15 top 10 guys in the course of his career, including 3 fighters considered the best in the division beside him and 2 fighters considered top 3 (beside him and his brother). To quote the late great Emanuel Steward only thing you can except from the champion is to defend his titles against the best available opposition. And he did just that. 18 consecutive title defences, including 11 of the lineal title. Only Larry Holmes & Joe Louis have more (Ali of course have more also combining his two reigns). And they also had their fair share of bums in their resumes. Mike Tyson only defended his title 9 times in the era as weak as Wladimir's.

It's always difficult to know how fighters of different eras would actually match up. However, I'd fully agree that on stats Lennox Lewis, would have the greatest potential to beat heavyweight champs from any era. He was big, athletically superb, a highly skilled boxer and a hard hitter. At the very least he would give the greatest heavyweights from any era, their greatest challenge. He hadn't got any obvious weakness that would allow you to say with certainty that any boxer from another era, have a major advantage against Lewis. You could say that Ali was a more skilled boxer, but Lewis was also one of the most skilled boxers of any era, alongside physicality, and boxing IQ (not quite the same as skill), to provide Ali with probably the toughest challenge of his career. In other words, if you could arrange a hypothetical fight between all these greats, the safest one to put your money on to win, in terms of probability, would be Lewis. But then you have those extra dimensions like determination, spirit, boxing IQ, that only becomes evident when 2 boxers actually fight i.e. it doesn't actually turn out like the experts saw it would

Lewis is certainly the best when it comes to head to head conversations. But I will say your disrespecting Liston a bit. He was physically strong enough to back up Foreman, so I doubt Lewis is out right stronger than him. Most likely being equal in that area. Liston’s jab is considered one of the best in heavyweight history, so I believe Lewis will have some degree of trouble out-boxing him, plus Lewis’ chin can be cracked, especially against Liston’s all time power. And while I believe Lewis’ does win because of his superior combination punching and more versatile offense (as well as Liston not being use to fighting someone significantly larger) It’s certainly not as simple as “He can just outbox him.” Especially when Lewis had difficulty with Ray Mercer. A power puncher with a strong jab, who’s similar in stature to Liston, basically a watered down version. Still a world champion but, again this just shows that it isn’t as simple as your trying to make it when looking at their skill sets.
