Why Letting Go Is True Wealth | Minimalist Philosophy for Simple Living

Humans often overburden themselves with all kinds of material possessions, buying much more than we need to stay alive and thriving. Consumerism comes with a price as well, as it requires resources to keep up with the other consumers.
Therefore, many people are willing to work themselves into an early grave, and simply accumulate, what we could call, ‘extensions of themselves’; extensions of their egos. “I have more, so I am more,” they tend to think, so by increasing their possessions they increase their sense of self.
But there’s a counter-movement to the consumerist society we’re living in, known as minimalism. Minimalists are people who turn their backs to overconsumption and decide to live with no more than necessary.
Aside from it being a lifestyle trend today, minimalism is a concept that people have been practicing for centuries. There’s a sense of freedom in simplicity, and not owning much, which many sages and philosophers have experienced throughout the ages. They saw that possessions don’t define who we are and that the ongoing pursuit of external things prevents us from experiencing life to the fullest.
This video examines the philosophical side of minimalism and explores why more is less and why less is more, and why letting go is true wealth (minimalist philosophy for simple living).

Went to visit my grandmother who lived a simple life, I never realized how rich she was and how much she had invested her time well! She had many friends and family that would come daily to her house to watch over her. They all would tell about the impact she had made in their lives and how much they loved her. Then seeing it as an adult I realize she had invested her life well loving and helping others! When she passed so many where there to share and remember her. She had no money she never needed it. My mother told me that a bird came through the door to sing on the moment of her passing! The gift of her life is one of my most prized possessions.

I’m often perplexed in our modern age by the conceptualisation of loneliness as not emulating the consumerist socialites who want to define society in their own image. Any wander can result in a nod, smile, or verbal greeting, and even an impromptu conversation. Yet in some cities that’s frowned upon as people rush to their next social fix. I think dragging up, as motivational gurus might be described, is equally toxic, as you can lose your identity to displays of the success they promote as ideals. True friends will meet with no interest in occupying spaces where they can display their consumerist credentials by buying more drinks or consumables. I think they’re few, if any, in today’s society.

I 'm not a minimalist, but I think the perfect balance is to only spend money on things you like and not to impress people. Think about where you're buying something solely to impress people, you'd be in a much better place to cut those things out. For example, I work hard and save money to go travelling, because I want to enrich myself with the experience, not to take glamorous pictures for Instagram. When I'm travelling long distances sometimes I have bought business class plane tickets, but that was only because I'm a big guy and needed to sleep on the plane which would have been better for my health and my circadian rhythm, I did NOT take any pictures of it to try and make anyone jealous. Nothing wrong with spending money but you need to make sure it's for the right reasons, to enrich the health and enjoyment of you and those you care about. Spending money on things to impress people is a bad idea, trust me I learnt the hard way.

Growing up as a child in a poor family, we saw the children of other families get wonderful toys... Our parents were cruel and selfish and the children came last... Hugs and Love were not given freely but were earned thru pleasing the adult; but taken away at the whim of the adult... many families suffered this reality but Family Secrets keep everyone in the belief they are the only ones who live this way. Haven't had a TV in 4 years,don't miss it. Eat well on less than $10 a day,might eat out once a month as a treat. I have what I need don't worry about what I want. Got here by circumstances rather than choice. My only selfish indulgence is my 1992 Lincoln. Gave up driving a computer, get as much joy working on it as I do driving it. Needed a nice low ride my 13 year old dog could manage. Took an early pension. Ex cleaning me out was the impetus for change. Cold beer,wet dog and a fish on the line plenty for me

I recently had a real experience where I suddenly was very aware that all the things I have are only being borrowed. Everything is temporary. I've always understood this from a philosophical standpoint, but it weirdly felt VERY real and almost as if I was understanding it for the first time. Not sure how to articulate it other than it was as if all at once, I spontaneously detached from everything, after years and years of paring down.

True, so many old buildings could be repaired and new mechanical. But I see some cities in decay instead of fixing up, that allow neighborhoods to become low income and it just decays. They can redo them as shelters, condos, lofts etc.

No decisions mean that others make choices for you, and, in an evil world full of people with their own wants and desires, the decisions made for you often benefit them and hurt you. Instead, Embrace responsibility, but don’t take on more than necessary. Understand that every decision and object you take on has a consequence, but accept it for the things that you want. King Solomon wrote about this in Ecclesiastes 1:14: :I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." As a king, Solomon had done and seen it all. After all his experiences.. Solomon declared that everything was meaningless and purposeless. It was like chasing after the wind. You can strive harder, run faster, but the wind cannot be caught. It will blow right through your hands even if you try to touch it. Solomon was referring to material pursuits which take up the majority of our time here on earth. Materially..we can never have enough. There is always an appetite for more. So like chasing after the wind, having as much material wealth as we desire is an unachievable goal. On the other hand, spiritual pursuits like loving God and keeping His commandments, repentance, studying His word are meaningful and valuable. It’s the mindless pursuit of physical pleasure and material gain that Solomon was speaking out against. It’s a waste of time and waste of a life.

If you're unable to use your possessions in the proper way, then by all means stay away from them (just like alcoholics should stay away from alcohol). But, if you've got the right relationship with them, then use them for the happiness they can accentuate (notice I said accentuate, not create). I can't remember what comedian said this, but the quote is "people say money can't buy happiness, but I've never seen anyone frown on a wave runner". The key is to use your possessions, and not let them use you 💯

I agree but I would also add that it's much better to live in a Mansion than in a small pathetic apartment. It's all about frequency. Having a nice top apartment or Mansion is much more likely to raise your frequency and keep you in a good and positive state of mind, rather than living in your mom's basement. Life has a lot of good to offer, so I would advise taking advantage of it instead of rejecting and ignoring it. Only poor and miserable people complain about status, wealth, and money like they "don't want it". That's a lie, they're just not able, smart, and brave enough to go get it. In essence I agree with your sentiments. I would add though that is easier for some to let go of lots of useless possessions than it is for others. If having less still leaves you with objects that will make life easier for you such as owning a plough and fork for growing food than that is great. Others however don't have the luxury of getting rid of objects because they are already devoid of them to the point where they are destitute. So a fair comment but one that will always be subjective on an individual's or families circumstance. The only other point I would add (and I am not inferring you don't think of this) is I am sure you have others in your life that provide you with emotional security and wellness. I do understand your point though and regarding the vast majority of wealthy countries I absolutely agree with what you are saying.

I don't care much about social status but I seem to be a born collector. I collected metal junk off the streets (to use in art projects). I am trying to declutter my life for mental health. In my limited experience, I've come to realise that Letting Go is also necessary when it comes to interact and connect with people. Often times, our mind, heart and ego build up desires and fantasies to have a certain kind of relationship or exchanges with the people around us. But not everything is in your control. Having a sense of continued detachment while still carrying out your duties and responsibilities towards them is the best way to live I can think of. And above all, to have no expectations, which is actually very hard to do. But one way various spiritual and religious paths advise us is to be concerned to be only of service towards them. I got rid of EVERYTHING, all paperwork and photos, scanned what I needed, most clothes, house, car, tools. I kept one pet rock. Bought a new motorcycle, saddlebags, and tent. If It is not strapped to my motorcycle I do not own it. It is such a freeing feeling rolling aimlessly down the road knowing all I own is right behind me. I love waking up in the morning looking around my tent, or motel room, seeing all my belongings and knowing that in an hour I can be back on the road again, worry free.

IS human connection really necessary though? I often struggle with this because I feel fulfilled through my connection to myself, with nature and non human animals. I do enjoy and value short interactions and connections with strangers, but most people are too clogged up in their own issues and perceptions that a true, pure long term connection is hard to find and exhausting to pursue. Hi there, introverted person with high intrapersonal intelligence here. I only had my 4 kettlebells and my bass and amp as my hobbies. Taking weight training more serious and since there was a bench set laying around the house i rent at. I could not resist buying a barbell with plates and a few dumbbells. I thought might as well make some use for it. While I prefer doing more calisthenics most of the time. I feel like I wasted money but I prefer training alone and having the access to it anytime of the day without walking to the gym besides having to take the barbell and plates out of my room to the backyard. I quickly came to realize it's the discipline of putting the hours in that will give strength rather than having more options to choose from to how differently each tool will train the body a certain way. I was alot more disciplined when I had less equipment to choose from but I'm now starting to get this psychological effect called "paradox of choice"
