I come from a Latino background (from Dominican Republic) and for us having more means we are worthy or that we have more than other. Growing up with this mentality was very unhealthy and it drained my souls to the fullest. I am glad that I was able to get out of that mentality and that way of thinking and living. Now I feel happier I live in New York City but I bought land in the Dominican Republic a town area, where I can breath fresh air, rivers around the are, beach and I can live a peaceful life with less! The biggest thing I've realized lately is that the more money you have, the more money you will want to spend. So you never really feel like you have enough. That's why I really like the idea mentioned in this video of learning how to be satisfied with what you already have. This is especially true of us in the first world. We get carried away by envy and comparison and believe the lie that other people live happier lives than us because they have all this stuff, that they are "living the dream". But the fact is that the only reason they have all this stuff is because they are stressed out all the time trying to maintain their excessive lifestyles. And if they stopped pushing to get more and more stuff then they would realize that happiness was already within their reach. The irony is that people in the third world that come to live in the first world have a tendency to become like this the most. They have lived their whole lives in poverty feeling envy for those in the first world who have everything they need. So when they come to live here and get a job, they carry their envy with them and buy into the lie that they need more and more stuff. Their family back home wonder why they are so stingy in sending money. But the family doesn't realize that the "cost of living is much higher" where we live. You never feel like you have enough.
@daryldraws80832 жыл бұрын
The saddest thing is that most people view success in life as having all the best material and comfort this world can offer, they work hard their whole lives aiming to chase this illusion, they attach themselves to the things they own: The more they have, the more they are, the better and more expensive their lifestyles are, the bigger their sense of importance is. Flashy and shimmering, that's the dream, which leads them to taking careers and jobs they don't really love because it's the fastest path towards their flashy dreams, so they endure having to do the work they are not really passionate on doing, only motivation is the money which will sustain their crazy and rich lifestyles. What a sad existence. Materials are just materials, how we live and dedicate our lives to the service of others doing the work we love and are passionate about, and how we cherish and enrich our relationships with the ones that matter to us are ultimately what truly matter and worth our short lives living for..

I have seen this IRL. A family member met and then married a guy from Africa. I was there visiting and met him several times when they lived in Africa. Relaxed, cool and happy dude, worked as a pool cleaner at a resort. Worked like 4-5 hours a day and had so little stress in his life. He had time to meet up with friends, take care of his child etc etc. He didnt make so much but it was enough to survive and be happy. He then moved to a western country and started working with caretaking of elders. Now he works 10-12 hours a day doesnt have time for friends and hardly any time for his kids. Sure he can send home some money but its still not enough to go around for everyone. When I met him told him he had a very nice life with much freedom and time to manage himself, he looked at me like I was crazy. Now he tells me that he understand what i meant.

Oddly enough, I kind of exemplified some aspects of minimalism before I knew the term. All I really need are the basics: food, clothing, shelter. Most of my wants are either accessible with the internet or spare cash (old video games played by ahem, "totally legit" means, the occasional fast food meal), are available for free or cheap (books from the library, visiting local events), or are things that money can't buy (being a hobby artist, keeping up with friends and family now and again as an adult). I don't like clutter in my apartment, and there's a surprising amount of space in my simple two-room. I tend to give away or sell things that are collecting dust. I only buy enough groceries that could fit into a backpack, which gives me good reason to walk more often. Ideally I'd use a flip phone (helps I'm a 00s-nostalgic fop and know I use the internet too much), but right now I'm still on a smartphone plan; when that expires though, cheap dumbphone it is. And before I got my current used Chromebook, there was a good appeal to just use the local library's computers if I had to go online for anything. I am incredibly lucky to have this opportunity and mindset, but like all things, it's not for everyone. And there's definitely days where I wish I wasn't broke much of the time. But personally, between getting by just fine with less stuff or having a silver spoon in my mouth (or being jealous of those who were) and being empty for it, I think I got the better deal.

I agree with @John Oakely. I'm very particular about people in my tiny social circle. I like people general, but not interested in being friends with many. I love my alone time so I appreciate not having visitors all the time. I've reduced my social media life from extremely busy to almost zero. I love it. I hate to say it aloud, but the lockdown was a nice time for me, too bad it had to come about from world-wide illness. Nobody talks about those of us who were NOT affected negatively emotionally or psychologically by lockdown. Living in a city, it was nice to have no social obliations, didn't run into neighbours, the streets were BEAUTIFULLY empty and quiet.

Something glossed over when trying to be moderate is that with most products, social media included, they always want to increase the addictiveness of the product while reducing the quality (cost). So, when we outsource our food preparation, for example, we get less in return over time. With something like social media, what was once a useful tool become more addictive and with less useful content. The product changes, but our loyalty to that brand has only grown stronger. They get you to buy in, like promises from a politician, but things change after we've let them into our castle. What we were convinced was an asset turned into a vampire. However, we need to understand that it was a potential vampire all along because that is the system. If we can understand that these things happen, we can mitigate risk and take back some control over our lives.

I actually don't have a lot of food in my apartment, but I think too much about food and I use food for every emotional need, and, also (I figured out the other day) as a diversion so that I don't think. When I'm anxious I often seek food. It's a panacea for me. No wonder it's such a hard thing to overcome! Instead of dismissing it as trivial, I need to accept it's a big problem and I need help with getting it under control.

Complicated thinking is perhaps one of the most difficult things that we have before us in this culture. It seems futile to live in a modern society and to live in such a way that life is a blur. We reach old age only to realize how short life is and how lacking the quality of our life has been. Most people seem discontent even though they literally have everything. To not be stuck in survival affords one a chance to look around and see what is truly meaningful.

Simplicity is extremely important for happiness. The quality of friends is way better than the quantity of friends. It's called social minimalism.

thanks...extremely important to spend digital time enhancing, stirring, interesting, uplifting, honest play...OMski the more moments spent 'in nature' or 'imagining or remembering nature' experiences we've had can, immediately, bring peace and ease to the entire system'...OMski

I've just embraced frugal minimalism. I done need to buy hardly anything like clothes shoes etc as I have enough to last the rest of my life.

The easiest way to become a minimalist is to move to a new home. My place and life used to be very cluttered and now my apartment looks just like the ones in the video. So much better.

I'm staying in the apartment but I have started process of getting rid of clutter. Including excessive amounts of everything. Packing it up and throwing things out everyday. Preparing for new carpeting and painting. My Kitchen Only has 2 plates , bowls etc. Oh yes I had a lot to get rid of but I did. My son is age 30 I will never make large casseroles again. Glad that I am doing it right now before I move in a couple of years.
