I never thought it was a type of area curse, i just thought people went in looking for the treasure and died, turning into Gibdos. In Pamela's father's case i thought he went looking for the treasure and was somehow infected by the gibdos down there, but escaped alive. This theory is actually a really neat alternative, it fits all the evidence really well.
@Acidfrog4753 жыл бұрын
Same. This isn't strictly related. I just thought it was funny. When I saw the title I instantly let out a, "Cuz he [Pamela's father] didn't die", thinking the vid was going to try and argue that the Gibdo mask should've been a transformation mask (since he gets "healed" by Link). Funny how stupid misconceptions you get before watching a video.
@Halibel7642 жыл бұрын
I always thought people were always going into a well for a reason, and whatever that is, the curse turns them into Gibdos, depending on what the word treasure means for them. Some Gibdos have simple demands and were indeed here for the greed, while Pamela's father wanted knowledge which is different, thus he would have managed to escape. Link in his case didn't even know what to find but entered the well in order to help, thus it wasn't by greed. Which is ironic because Link would do anything for rupees.
@samwiseb2799 Жыл бұрын
It also fits into the theory that Majoras Mask is about adulthood. Link gaining the Gibdo Mask represents links acceptance of mortality which is why he gives away things in the well because it’s supposed to represent Link letting go of materialistic things and once he gets the mirror shield it’s supposed to represent a reflection of himself accepting on letting go. Basically all the masks represent different lessons of adulthood and how Link grows to an adult. The Fierce Deity Mask is the final lesson of Sacrifice because Link sacrifices his own happiness for the people of Termina so they can be spared from pure destruction and represents Links willingness to punish Majora and free Skull Kid.

@Legend_Zone3 жыл бұрын
Yep, in hindsight I realized the thumbnail kind of made it look like it was more about that than the well, haha. That's another worthwhile topic though! It's interesting how the masks that do transform Link all were people with lingering regrets, and two at least were known heroes. Maybe since the masks' owners all matched closely with Link, they had some weird kind of bond, or something. It's been a while since I looked into it so I've probably forgotten a lot about that particular part, so take anything here with a grain of salt, haha.
@segevstormlord37132 жыл бұрын
I actually think I'll go with both explanations. Link wasn't subject to it due to being not greedy, but perhaps the curse is insidious enough that it can induce greed, too. After all, if "greed" is "desire," then any reason for entering it can be turned to "greed." But the Triforce of Courage also nosells the curse, if it does start to get hold. Probably, given its nature, by reminding Link of his determination and purpose. I think even a greedy bearer of the Triforce of Courage would be able to power through the curse on determination alone, rejecting it by sheer willpower if he wished. I say this because I doubt Ganon would've been cursed by the well. He's just too much the Greater Evil. The well's curse certainly would have hold on him for his greed and lust for power, but Ganon's Triforce of Power would utterly stomp the curse. It would take root, and then do nothing except feed Ganon's power still more in whatever fashion he deemed acceptable.

I really enjoyed your theories in this! And I feel like the Triforce wouldn't be as powerful in Termina as it was in Hyrule, so I think your second theory is more likely to be true.
@Legend_Zone4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The Triforce definitely doesn't seem as important in Termina, even if it's power still was active, but either way I do like my second thought a little more. Thanks for watching!
@Acidfrog4753 жыл бұрын
I like to imagine that the Triforce only works for those that actually believe in it (it works for the Hylians because it works like it does in the Hylian faith). Since the Hylian interpretation of the Triforce seemingly doesn't exist in the Terminan religion(s), I think it wouldn't work at all. The Terminans may just assume it's a giant placebo effect, Idk. Or maybe, since there have been a couple pyramids in the shape of the Triforce in Termina, that symbol might be completely different there, with a completely distinct cultural meaning and potential powers.
@Legend_Zone3 жыл бұрын
Well, some places in Termina show the Triforce, like Cremia's belt or some gold bars that can be found lying around in some places. Granted, the Terminians clearly don't have the same ties to it that Hylians do, but it is true that the strength of the user's wish is relative to its fulfillment, so if they didn't believe it would happen I doubt it would be very effective.
@Acidfrog4753 жыл бұрын
@@Legend_Zone Yeah. It might hold some other power, be just a religious symbol with no significant value like a cross (obviously, that's not how Christianity works, but I doubt most Christians would consider any random wooden cross to be all that meaningful) or maybe it's just a pretty symbol (like the warehouse chain Prisma, which uses a coloured Triforce-like symbol as its logo).

Also worth mentioning Link's Elegy of Emptiness Statue looks rather "distinct" compared to statues of other living creatures That's something that makes me dislike the "Ben Drowned" pasta as I feel that fanfic ended up overshadowing the concept itself and ends up being a glossed over detail in a lot of People's eyes for what is a very fascinating idea in Majora's Mask, with untapped potential for theories of what the implication of such an appearance implies. Instead it's boiled down to "Ooky Spooky Cartridges" I dunno man The EoE Statue's implications intrigue Me, I don't think enough People look deep enough into it 👁👁

It really is overlooked to an extent. The meaning behind it and a lot of things I. Majora's Mask have yet to be fully explored. Perhaps I'll check out some of that soon! Thanks for watching!
@gregpl93633 жыл бұрын
ben drowned really did mess up the context of the statues appearance... I have a theory behind it maybe you'll like it. of course its called the elegy of emptiness because it creates an empty husk/ shell of the being that plays it. playing it as Link you see a rather suspicious smiling version of Link.. but if you think about it.. whats the one thing you NEVER see Link do ( disregarding wind waker because that one is supposed to be cheerful etc). but taking ocarina of time as well as majoras mask in mind, Link never even once cracks a smile.. and looking at the statue, although its smiling, its not. its not a sincere smile but it seems scarily forced, and very very.... empty.. I think this says a lot about Link as a kid ( who has experienced adulthood already). so think its more of a sad idea rather than a scary one even though that statue creeps me the buck out. just a thought though
@Acidfrog4753 жыл бұрын
@@gregpl9363 To build on that idea, that forced smile _is_ Link. Since the other statues represent who the actual person is at any given point (Darmani III, Mikau and what I assume the Deku Butler's Son looked like), it's safe to assume that Link is just a depressed, broken kid deep inside, hiding behind a false childhood (since this most likely wouldn't have been what his actual childhood would've been like, since Navi wouldn't have fulfilled her purpose yet). As OP said, Ben Drowned completely omits that extremely dark and depressing symbolism in exchange for "ooo spooky statue go brrrr". It's such a lazy cop-out when the lost childhood idea is so much freakier and sadder.
@gregpl93633 жыл бұрын
@@Acidfrog475 yeah nice! and exactly that grief and not-self-inflicted regrets regarding his childhood, of which what we get to see during ocarina and majora's mask he never gets the chance to properly deal with, the years prior to ocarina of time was practically Link living his life in ignorance of his origin and family etc, all of a sudden one day, you get to hear what happened to your parents, you're not part of the people you consider family, your father figure ( deku tree) passes away after you think you went in to save him and from that point on you become the Hero of all Hyrule disregarding everything about yourself. then when all said and done, and you get the time to reflect and perhaps with the help of a dear friend, when all of a sudden that same friend disappears... and then... Majoras mask :p its like a never ending sh(..)storm of childhood trauma, with no real way to deal with it. Linking it to twilight princess, I think that the Hero's Shade ( which is OoT's Link of course) looks the way he does for a damn good reason. he also talks about his regrets and never being able to pass on his knowledge while alive.. think that says a lot as well.

Adding a point against Link being protected by the triforce of courage from unwilling/unwanted transformations, Skull Kid managed to transform Link into a deku scrub without much effort, working his dark magic would have been a lot harder if his target was under divine protection.
@Legend_Zone2 жыл бұрын
True, Majora's Mask would have to be pretty strong to overpower a Triforce piece. Not impossible, but unlikely for sure. It could be that since it was less of a direct curse and more fusing Link's body with another Spirit, that the Triforce may not have directly rejected it (since the masks later do the same thing and aren't... _exactly_ evil magic), but we don't have a ton of info on how the whole transformation magic works anyway, so there's no telling with that. Thanks for watching!

I mean link is definately entering the well for the same reason the treasure hunters were: because he heard there was a treasure down there. If in the game they had said "that well is full of cursed souls. Maybe inside you will find a way to release them from their curse", but no one did. Link is arguably more able to be labelled as greedy than the scientist who went down there out of curiosity and to learn.

Or, a more simple explanation, there isn't a curse like that. Now, I know people say he was cursed and began transforming into a Gibdo, but I can't find in game evidence stating that's the case, so I'm not sure if it being a curse is fact or just speculation, an easy way of explaining his situation. However, if it is a curse, consider that it might not be related to the well specifically, just a general Gibdo curse, as in that's how Gibdo are created anywhere. Moving on to the main point, however, it is stated by the Poe Collector when you wear the Gibdo Mask that it is "the mask of those that roam this world with the most lingering regrets." Thus Gibdos are people that died with lingering regrets. While Pamela's father does say the Gibdos beneath the well are the spirits of those that were looking for the treasure, his words don't necessarily suggest that the well is why they became Gibdos. The Garo also implies this with the line "as the Gibdos of Ikana's well have regrets and long to savor items from this world, they continue to wander about." So take this information, that Gibdos are those with regrets that wander the world. Add to it that all of Ikana is under a curse causing undead everywhere, Gibdos appear elsewhere in the world (not in Majora's Mask, but other games), they become ReDeads when their bandages are burned off (at least in this game), and there is at least one other undead. Seems more likely that its just a normal Gibdo thing, not a well-specific curse
@Acidfrog4753 жыл бұрын
Do you know if there's any evidence or hints in-game that could explain how Pamela's father became part-Gibdo in the first place? I always assume(d) it was some zombie- or vampire-like "bite and person becomes infected with this undead curse" curse.

If i had to guess why the gibdo mask doesnt act as an actual transformation mask like the other three, id say its because the person you get the mask from isnt actually dead, and therefore their spirit doesnt end up sealed in the mask. With the deku, goron, and zora mask, you acquire them after the person they are based on has passed and their spirit has been sealed in the mask, allowing link to merge with them. In the case of pamelas father, he doesnt pass away as the song of healing was able to fully heal him from his curse. Therefore, the gibdo mask didnt contain a spirit when created therefore just being an empty mask. TL;DR since the song of healing was able to fully heal pamelas father and instead shed him of his curse, the mask left behind was empty and without a spirit inside, it didnt have the power to transform link.

Yeh, after making the video and the thumbnail, I realized it definitely looks more like it would be about the Gibdo mask than the well itself. I guess that's what I get for trying to illustrate a Gibdo-fied Link- he just looks like Gibdo mask Link, lol. But yes, I agree that since the mask doesn't hold a spirit with lingering regrets like the other transformation masks that it wouldn't force a transformation when worn or anything. It just looks like a Gibdo and has a similar feel or energy that makes the Gibdos easier to communicate (maybe even some magic lingering from the partial Gibdo form of the researcher).
