Of course he’s MVP. 20 goals and 10 assists in 19 MLS games, many of which have been at crucial times for Miami (ie when they inevitably concede in the first 5 minutes of so many games) and of astounding quality. And that’s without mentioning how unreal his general passing, dribbling, touch, vision, leadership, ability to control the game, etc has been. Easily MVP 🐐

Bravo! I've been arguing since the debate began that Messi's value to Miami far exceeds even his inhuman statistics. His aura improves the team culture and determination. IMCF did not want to lose when Messi was gone, because if they did they would be letting him down. And when he's on the field? Please... it's not even close. Truthfully I pinch myself everyday because there is NO DOUBT that Messi could still be playing in La Liga or EPL or any league he wanted to play in. And of course what does he represent to the club? Its the reason all of the players came here. Its the reason IMCF skyrocketed to 2nd in club value and amassed so many followers. Lastly, no offense to any of the competition, but would ANY ONE in their right mind select someone OVER messi for their one game to save humanity? NO, they wouldn't

Messi has transformed MLS since joining, elevating the league's profile and adding immense value. His goals and assists are unmatched, and winning the League Cup in his first season is proof of his impact. At 37, he defies age, recovering from a severe ankle injury to score consecutive hat-tricks-one for Argentina against Bolivia and another for Inter Miami against New England. Despite missing 15 games, he helped Miami lift the Supporters' Shield with a record 74 points. Messi shows no signs of decline, continuing to amaze the world!

Good pints. MVP is award for value, not school atendance. Messi is one of those players that adds valuable not only for his club, but to the league as a whole. His skills and statistics are unqustianable. His value as a leader in the club on and off the field, example for the young players, magnet for high quality players attracted to Inter Maiami and hunger for success. Financial value of the club rose imensly. The popularity of soccer in US has reached new levels. The stadiums Inter Miami plays on filled up even with the new higher prices and these assets go to all the clubs not only IM. What of the populatity of MLS? Famous futball players and sport news channels around a world talk about MLS and 9 times out of 10 what is the name linked to it?

I wish there were a stat that tracked which goals and assists ACTUALLY ended up yielding points to their team. Like if a players scores and they go from 2-1 to 3-1, they get zero points, since their team was already winning. But if they score and go from 1-1 to 2-1, then they get 2 points. And if they score and go from 0-1 to 1-1, they get 1 point. The MVP at the end of the season would be the one with most points. You could count assists, too.

20 goals and 16 assist in 19 games are MVP numbers; but Messi’s impact isn’t just there. Think about the 3-2 scored by Cremaschi against NE: the assist was from Jordi Alba, but he received the through ball from Messi who started the play. With his game, Lio has elevated not just Miami but the entire league.

Yeah, that's the point Ronaldo fans always miss when comparing the two; Messi's contribution is so much more than just his goals and assists, and that's the true sign of greatness. There are plenty of good goalscorers, dribblers, passers and crossers, but what's really rare is a player who can turn a run-of-the-mill attack into something dangerous, not just someone who can contribute a single competent part of the whole. Modern defending is so well-organised that someone who can find a way to break the pattern and throw the defense into disarray with a single action or a series of perfectly executed actions is worth his weight in gold.

@@csfwatson We don't forget at all. But we also don't forget that the first Monterrey game was played without Messi and Redondo and was pre-acquiring Rojas (his natural sub). Yannick Bright (who was arguably rookie of the year) played in neither game against Monterrey. When Messi came back from injury for the 2nd game he did so without having any time to work back into game shape. Redondo was unavailable due to injury. The league's cup game against CLB was without Messi (and we saw in their last meeting what a difference that makes). And the two games against CLB during the regular season? Both IMCF victories, despite being with out Messi for the first.

@@TheGentlemanWake “Messi came back but didn’t have time to get back to game shape” sounds like an excuse to me . @@TheGentlemanWake Well, even with Messi, Miami lost to Monterrey in Monterrey while Columbus won in Monterrey. And yes, Miami did win the first game in the regular season, I will grant you, but first, in Leagues Cup folks keep talking about how "deep" Miami is while overlooking how well that deep team did against a playoff contender despite being up 2-0. And second, that game in Columbus should have had a different result. The refs missed a red card on Busquets when he put his studs into Farsi's abdomen, but then Camacho gets all ball and the ref deems that a second yellow card. In tandem, Suarez had one of the worst dives I've ever seen to set up the Messi free kick goal. Granted, Camacho tackling Schulte resulting in the third Miami goal did Columbus no favors, but the refs helped Miami massively and even then down to 10 men, the Crew were within striking distance of equalizing or even winning that game.

The 8 out of 9 wins when Messi was gone is overrated. Miami lost only 1 of the 19 (versus losing 3 of 15 when not playing) games Messi played. Miami also lost the League's Cup without Messi. Miami barely won a bunch of those games during the 8-1 streak and were far more dominant with Messi in the lineup.

To me, the award is about the most valuable player on the field. His impact on players signing there is an indirect impact. This is an award for the MLS regular season. We saw how the team did with him out, they didn't exactly struggle with him gone. If you took Christian Benteke out of the lineup for 9 games, DC probably loses every single game. If Albert Rusnack missed 9 games the Sounders would have had a real bad time. He is undoubtedly the most talented player in the league, I just don't think he was the most valuable on the field this season.

I think putting too much value on the word "value" is a mistake to begin with. In England they use "man of the match" for individual games, and the mvp for the entire season should basically be the "man of the season", as in the player who was THE guy that year. Plenty of terrible teams have been carried by a single player who was a cut above the rest of his teammates despite not being in the top ten players for the league that year. There is a nebulous minimum number of games you have to play to be in the conversation, cuz you can't give it to a player who played 3 games even if he scored a hattrick in each one. I don't know what the exact number of games would be, but I know that Messi definitely qualifies.

Level of competition matters a lot; anyone can look amazing when playing at a level below where they belong. I've seen guys from the Swedish 5th division look like Messi while playing against amateurs, so it makes sense that you need to do it week in week out in a top league. Now, if he puts in another World Cup performance like his last one and wins Argentina another gold, then he'd be in the conversation, but otherwise it feels a bit unfair to younger, fitter players who can contribute for 90 minutes every game both offensively and defensively, and I say this as someone who thinks Messi should have won every single Ballon d'Or since his first one.

The argument that Inter Miami still win without Messi is ridiculous. If they lost that game, Inter Miami won't win the Supporters Shield Cup and won't break the Point Record. And of course there is no chance Messi won't be a candidate for MVP

You can incorporate that into his overall performance if you want bud, but that still doesn’t come anywhere close to what Messi brings to the table. One loss to a team doesn’t mean anything either. The MLS propping up of Messi and Miami will continue until he retires. I guarantee you if any other player had or came close to the numbers that Messi put up and had missed almost or as many games as Messi had (especially if it was a Columbus player) that player wouldn't even be in the MVP conversation. But since it's Messi all of a sudden every single media head falls over backwards to prop him up. If Messi only missed a few games during the international summer window that's one thing, but missing as many games as he did and is still in the MVP conversation? This is ridiculous. Miami is turning into the New York Cosmos of the modern day, and MLS is going to be worse for it once Messi leaves.
@eamano8474
@eamano8474 12 сағат бұрын
No other player would come close. And I they did of course they'd be in the running. Its alot more impressive putting up those numbers in less games and inter miami would not be where top or definitely not record breakers with any other player in the league in his place. Anyway its not just about numbers. Messi's influence even without goals or assists is mvp worthy. As others say they best non playoff teams without him and scraped some of those wins. He is easily the best player in the league
@csfwatson
@csfwatson 12 сағат бұрын
@@eamano8474 But Messi's missed almost half the season. He only started 16 games out of 34, and that's not even taking the time he missed in Leagues Cup into account. Yes his numbers are impressive, but he missed almost half the season. I guarantee the only reason Messi's in the running is because it's Messi and MLS wants him to be their golden goose. Every other league in the world (and I'm sure MLS in the past as well) would have deemed a player that has missed half the season as ineligible for the MVP award, but since it's Messi he gets the pass. Cucho has similar numbers to Messi (32 goal contributions all year in MLS play and 1.23 goals contributed per 90 trailing only Messi) and he's played all year on top of Concacaf and Leagues Cup without missing time beyond International breaks, but he's probably not going to get it because Messi makes MLS money.
@eamano8474
@eamano8474 11 сағат бұрын
@@csfwatson But to get those numbers in less games is more impressive and they were the main reason miami are where they are. Any player getting 36 goal contributions in that amount of games would be in the running. If messi wasn't it would be because of who he is. If cucho or benteke got that in those games and the team got those points they'd definitely be in the running and you know it. He's the top goal contributer I the best team so of course he's in the running. And 19 games is alot of games and more than enough to influence the teams league position
@csfwatson
@csfwatson 11 сағат бұрын
@@eamano8474 Those numbers are impressive, yes. He still missed almost half the season though. Who's to say those numbers would have remained the same if Messi played all year? If he played all year and put up big numbers, the it'd be no contest, Messi would be MVP. But he missed half the season and as such shouldn't be in the running. And again, any other player probably would have been non-eligible for MVP if they missed half the season except for Messi.
@eamano8474
@eamano8474 10 сағат бұрын
@@csfwatson they wouldn't be ineligible because they'd be the teams top goal contributer. 19 games is enough. And in those 19 he had a massive influence on them finishing where they did. Ok if he got those numbers and the team scraped into the playoffs, he would have less of shout to be mvp, but they finished so high because of him. And Messi's general play is way ahead of any player I that league. Some of his touches and beating of players in general play were wow moments. You have to have a player from inter miami in the running and he was their best player
