Long Covid is not just changing the lives of those affected, but it is proving to have a significant impact on the American labor force and economy. About a quarter of the roughly 16.3 million working-age Americans currently suffering from long Covid are out of work, and according to one estimate, long Covid could cost America as much as $3.7 trillion. Many of those suffering are either running out of disability insurance through their employers or getting denied Social Security Disability Insurance or SSDI - an effect that’s expected to be long-lasting. In December 2021, Congress allocated $1.15 billion to the National Institutes of Health to study the long term effects of the disease. But many experts are saying that is not nearly enough.

I first had Covid in April 2022, was triple vaccinated and no pre-existing conditions. I am finally, seven months later, starting to feel a bit better. The deep fatigue is still there, but I'm able to work again and see slow improvement to where some days I feel like myself again. I am on a strict anti-inflammatory diet--no meat, no processed foods, no sugar, no alcohol. Long-Covid is real--it was so frustrating to go to doctors who didn't believe me. Even friends and family thought I was a drama queen.

One of my sons got swine flu when it came to Australia In 2009. He was a young, fit, healthy 26yr old. A year later he still had great fatigue, regular bouts of illness & tinnutis & eventually was diagnosed with post viral asthesia (effectively what is now called long covid). He continues to have all of those issues but has had to learn how to live with them. He's had covid twice this year & said it's pretty much the same but at least he knew what to expect & how to handle it. He'd prefer not to have it though as it's affected how he lives his life, including not being able to play sport. It's a really good reason to do what you can to avoid covid if possible, or minimise its impact

The exact same thing happened to my aunt. They kept talking about scaring on her lungs that they knew wasn't there before her covid diagnosis. She got over the initial infection and didn't have it bad at all. In comparison her daughter ended up on a ventilator. But a month and half later that scaring caused a lot of problems. A month and half later she died. I could not get them to admit that it was after effects of covid yet they knew she never was right after that virus.

I have tried everything from intermittent fasting to low histamine diet. I am good for sometimes and then it comes back. I struggle to go to job everyday and be a normal person like I was before covid. I don’t know anyone around me who’s suffering from long covid so no one seems to take me seriously. I would do anything to be my healthy self again. Sometimes we are ungrateful and take things for granted. It made me realize how important being healthy is. Its truly gold. It sucks and chronic fatigue is debilitating- but it will get better! Maybe think of this as a break for your body for all the hardwork you did before. While resting, try meditation and vivid dreaming. There is also equipment people created if your laying down and unable to move very much. (Try disability aids and slowly learn short keys or voice commands for your phone or computer to reduce the amount of energy spent.) Some people end up working from their bed alone. @Miss Spell... I resonate. And understand this: I became sick with the EARLIEST version of C19 (in late 2019). Scientifically speaking, that is when a virus is most powerful, yet the least transmissible. Absolutely no one believed me, because science doesn't matter--only feelings and beliefs. I actually think I'm LUCKY that I was in fairly fantastic shape because of my previous live performance background and high-octane martial arts work in the past. But C19 still absolutely destroyed me in at least a half-dozen ways. 😕 I'm an award-winning author now, but I had to completely abandon doing fairly rigorous physical activities. Not that I really miss them here in my older age, but... that's just it: I aged like "six" years in only THREE. 😳 It's friggin' lousy. And absolutely everyone abandoned me, lol... so... yup, I'm just on my own. It's probably for the best that it remains as such, I suppose. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

If you knew what you were talking about that you’d know that those big paycheck protection loans have to be paid in full when the company hires a certain percentage of new personnel. So why would they hire and have to pay back those loans when they could simply put job announcements out and not call anyone back? Use your head - it’s all about maximizing profitability. The tendency for the rate of profits to fall is an economic law, not an opinion, this will continue to happen until the underlying economic infrastructure cracks.

Have your blood sugar (glucose) levels checked. Instant levels with the help of a diabetic friend who can inform you where you should be, and at a GP doing long term glucose average. At least early on it was mentioned Covid could attack pancreas, and if beta cell production is affected, you could have become diabetic. Which could explain frequent urination. If you are, better start managing it. If not, well, at least you can strike that off. I'm not a doctor, but I'm diabetic from before Covid, and I got the diagnosis by accident when I thought I was all fine.

Luckily, I had savings, a healthcare plan, and my dad helped with part of the rent. Lucky, for me I had an apartment to come home to and my rent is $658 dollars. My vision is strained so I wear glasses now. The fatigue is there but is subsiding. I am lucky only to have a $6,000 medical bill. I was out of work for almost a year a year without any income. Because I exhausted most of my funds my brother is now my roommate and pays half the rent. I also had to go on Medicaid and Food Stamps. I also have a bachelors degree from a state university in software engineering and network security and I keep getting rejected and discriminated straight to my face. Some people are very nasty to me and open about their hiring practices. This is real people I am one of the lucky ones to be able to survive. I have but all given up on the job market. I have also realized that I need to charge lawyer fees per hour because software is hard to make and its complex. I would love to be cheaper but with COVID and inflation I am left with no choice. Possibly consider the following: The spike protein of the virus is using the TLR4 protein on T Cells to Trigger an inflammatory immune response. This is to cause deregulated release of Cortisol that lowers inflammation. TLR4 can stimulate the release of Cortisol from adrenal cells to combat inflammation but Cortisol then suppresses lymphocyte gamma interferons and IL-8 cytokines and effectively suppresses the primary immune response allowing the virus to spread. Cortisol also primes the secondary immune response and you get increased cytokine inflammation. To promote CD4+ helper T Cells you get elevated Extracellular ATP (the energy molecule) that increases Il-18 cytokines that in turn promote CD4+ helper T-Cells and increase lymphocyte gamma interferons. IL-18 cytokines are also linked to deep vain thrombosis so ATP has to help break down these blood clots causing fatigue.IL-18 cytokines can also cause release of histamine from Mast Cells that helps fight infection but can also cause inflammation. Cortisol at elevated levels also disrupts gastric secretions, lowers circulating testosterone needed to regulate systematic inflammation, causes ROS, causes insulin resistance and increase blood glucose leading to diabetes. Cortisol is also correlated with homocysteine. At elevated levels homocysteine is linked to stimulation of platelet activation (in vitro), COPD, Alzheimer’s, brain shrinkage and hardening of blood vessels and blood clots. With the original SARS the virus was found to be infecting the ACE2 receptors of cells in the endothelial wall. In response homocysteine increased the adhesive molecules on the surface of immune cells binding them to the infection causing inflammation.Blockage along the lining of blood vessels can cause cortisol to inhibit IL-10 signalling which regulates inflammation. By disrupting gastric secretions this means the ph levels are not low enough to promote secretions of the digestive enzyme Pepsin. Pepsin not only helps absorption of vitamins and minerals but also helps fight bacteria and viruses and in vitro break down upper respiratory blood clots. Cortisol can also increase TNF-Alpha cytokines by causing muscle cells to stop using glucose and start degranulating proteins. Excessive cortisol production can lead to adrenal fatigue which can cause chronic inflammation, fatigue, digestive issues and autoimmune disease. (Pernicious Anaemia is one such autoimmune disease identified. A blood test checking for B12 deficiency can identify this but allow for antibody interference as this can give false normal or even elevated levels of B12. Intrinsic factor antibodies can be considered) Disruption to gastric secretions can lead to a condition called Hypochlorhydria or low stomach acid. This means that food cannot be sterilised or digested properly and lead to a build up of bad bacteria and toxins. This can lead to bloating, diarrhoea, vomiting and acid reflux symptoms often misdiagnosed as high stomach acid. The acid reflux can be caused by build up of bad bacteria and toxins pushing out into the base of the oesophagus carrying particles of stomach acid causing inflammation at the base of the oesophagus. Inflammation at the base of the oesophagus can cause the top of the oesophagus to contract causing the sensation of a lump in the throat. Possibly consider the following (Always under medical supervision). 1. Taking a combination of 4,000 IU of Vitamin D3, C, B12, B5,B6 and magnesium and zinc. (This combination treats adrenal fatigue but also vitamin D blocks the release of Cortisol and lowers the expression of TLR4 proteins) 2. Drink twice daily 250 ml of water with 1/4 teaspoon of salt. This will help to increase electrolytes to treat adrenal fatigue and the virus may be hijacking the protease the body uses to regulate salt and water absorption. 3. Taking a gradual increasing dosage of Betaine HCL (500mg) with Pepsin (24mg) Betaine HCL inhibits TLR4 proteins, lowers key cytokines IL-18, IL1-b and TNF-a. It also increases IL-8 cytokines that promote neutrophils than coordinate T Cell immune response. (In a form of TB IL-8 cytokines were found to bind to the infection and stimulate a CD4+ and CD8 T Cell response) It reverses insulin resistance and lowers cellular atp. Betaine also lowers cortisol and homocysteine and increases testosterone needed to regulate systematic inflammation. Betaine HCL with pepsin is ineffective at low dosage but must only be considered under medical supervision as it can affect cellular atp needed to provide energy to cells and the body and also increases IL-8 cytokines that can cause inflammation in blood vessels. It cannot be take with aspirin, ibuprofen, Tylenol, steroids or Pepcid Famotidine as it can cause bleeding and ulceration to the stomach. It also cannot be taken during pregnancy. The dosage is 1 pill with each meal 3 times per day gradually increasing to 2 pills depending on tolerance. If the higher dosage causes nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea then lower the dosage. Any medication should only be considered under medical supervision. I hope this information helps

I knew this was coming from the start. I'm on disability for high functioning autism and I've BEEN on that "you don't look disabled" coaster. Its a nightmare. My ride was blissfully short because I got a lawyer to help me get my disability. But i had to give them some of my back payments. If you do this, make ABSOLUTELY SURE you are getting a lawyer pro bono. You can't afford to pay more. Every dollar you can keep from that back payment is CRITICAL. And make sure you take as many records as possible of what's going on, have those records IN YOUR HANDS. I blame the GOP for not understanding the bigger picture and not being WILLING to understand it. Diseases destroy the productivity of an economy. We see this in Africa with Malaria. Parents have to take off work because their child could DIE and they need to be there. The time they take off work means that they end up with the double blow of a seriously ill child, possibly losing a child, and losing the money they need to survive. If you decide the American way of life is non negotiable, you're going to run headlong into reality, which isn't going to negotiate. Its going to take out a hammer and beat the snot out of you for having the audacity to think your country is somehow immune to consequences. That's what's happening right now to the United States. Our political system believed it was immune to consequences, that it could just take take take. Now its our turn to suffer. Go to the ballot box in your local primary, vote progressive, for your health and freedom. By the time the regular election comes around, its too late and you're stuck with the neoliberal complacency that got us into this mess. Force companies to do their job for once instead of just sapping money from us for existing! Insurance is THERE for when you're in distress!

Haven’t been able to get SSDI yet. My heart goes out to all those with long-Covid. Most of it isn’t new though - it’s just ME/CFS which has been around & ignored & disbelieved by most for decades. It took me 5 years to figure out what the h was going on with me, and another 3 to get a diagnosis. With this new awareness around long Covid / ME/CFS, people have the chance to learn about post exertional malaise and not make their condition worse (like me and so many others). Thank you for this story! We need to continue raising awareness. We need support and to be believed by doctors. It’s a horrid condition and the lack of understanding from everyone (doctors, family, friends) is one of the hardest parts.

Took off for a couple more days and had to pay for it with what little time off I had left. Went back to work with symptoms after that. It took me over 3 months to get back to any level of normal. I've been dealing with unimaginable migraines (including inside my eyes) ever since, never had them before that. That was 2 years ago. I just literally work through it because it's all I can do. I work from home so it helps. I've taken so much tylenol in the past 2 years I'd be surprised if I didn't have liver problems down the road. Both of these things would exhaust me to be in bed for a week afterwards. Just a meal with friends would tip me over the edge. Every system in my body would be activated and all not work together resulting in a feeling of utter exhaustion, hangover, flu and jetlag, the symptoms are too variable and fluctuating to explain. I have had vertigo, BBPV, severe abdominal pain attacks, IBS, tinnitus, unable to get up my own stairs, blood that feels like lead, brain fog, PEM, insomnia, etc etc. Maybe if they hadn't told us decades ago that ME/CFS was all in our head we wouldn't be in this position. I applied for a blue badge for parking but was denied as on the day i could walk to my car. Which is true but on other days i cant. Got sick in 2016 took months to recover, starting having symptoms of neuromuscular disease, been through 3 SSDI denials, got it with attorney which shouldn't be needed, 7 neurologists with advice from just take B12, or carnitine or learn to live with it. Mestinon used for MG has improved situation by10-20% by some quantifiable data despite no antibodies. Really only certain it behaves like MG in everyway. I was certain I was going to die before the med, could only walk about 200 ft with cane, in tears, falling often and so exhausted I had to use bipap and oxygen to rest. Now can walk 5 times further if I plan ahead and don't do any exertion including eating afterwards. Have had covid definitely twice and illness that tested neg but lost sense of smell/taste and all covid symptoms. Each time is brutally exhausting and back to just eating and taking dogs out, showering once a week and struggling with feeling useless. 39 yrs of active nursing means I am stubborn in the face of medical gaslighting which hurts more than the illness. This has been my life since Feb 2019. I was a active vet tech, wife and mother. Looking forward to extending my family to another child and moving to a off grid cabin to start our own homestead. One day after work walking my dogs I had a spike in blood pressure and heart rate ended up at the ER 3 times in a week. Never was able to go back to work. Have a 7 year old son that was only 4 when I got sick. I have had heart rate issues, blood pressure issues, major fatigue and sleep issues, GI issues, skin issues, dizziness, sore body all over, pain everywhere. Everytime I go to the doctor they say nothing wrong. Went to over 40-50 doctors and specialists. Tried natural medicine, functional medicine, chiropractor, cfs clinic, everything imaginable. Now I sit at home in bed or a chair waiting to die. I have no life with my husband and son. I can't be much of a mother and we are at the point of not being able to pay for mortgage and food. No one cares. Doctors say nothing can be done and just live like this. I used to work 40 hours a week and got outside to walk and hike every chance I could. Loved to garden, cook, be outside and active with my son. Always on the go and never sat down till bedtime. I just don't think I can do it anymore. Don't want to leave my son that's only about to be 8 years old but he doesn't even know who his mother really was. I think suicide is the only way out of this after 4 years. Of course no disability but that wouldn't fix my body anyway so it's like what's the point anymore. I think that we should qualify for death with dignity but since it is not " terminal" can't do that either. All my hopes as a mom are gone to do anything normal with my son or have more kids. I think the worst part is that no one can even tell me why this happened. I wasn't sick before it happened just always tired and had aches and pains which I thought was from working a physical job. Life is gone as I know it and I just can't take it anymore. I think everyday is today the day I go hang myself out back of my house because I see no point in living anymore and just want to be at peace from this awful life I have been handed.

There’s research that is showing People with long covid have brain swelling as well and even hair loss , scientists still cant prove this virus came from an animal I believe more and more everyday this was a bio weapon intended to damage people . I got REALLY sick in late 2019--it was definitely C-19. I lost all sense of taste and smell. ALL OF IT. In 30+ years, this had obviously never, ever occurred before. I was beyond exhausted, but I was already a pretty strong guy, and I still worked through it. But NO ONE CARED. :) Not even my (now ex) girlfriend, nor her family, nor my own, LOL. They were ANGRY with me. Claimed I was making excuses. I never had health care, and I was basically "poor", so... I handled it alone. NO ONE CARED. C19 OBVIOUSLY HIT THE WORLD VERY HARD. I tried to warn people in early, early 2020 about the similarity in the trends from the 1900's pandemic (influenza)--no one cared. I kept pushing as things got MUCH worse for everyone very quickly in April, but everyone denied it was anything substantial because "reasons". No facts required, NO ONE CARED. By then, 90% of all people had completely abandoned or 'blocked' me after I was mocked, cajoled, lambasted, ridiculed, and labeled a "communist", since I was pretty vocal about being anti-Chump (and his idiotic ways of 'handling' the pandemic). NO ONE CARED. Thousands died from complications of C19. No one cared. Some of my friends died from it. A few people were sad about that. Millions finally died. But ultimately, NO ONE CARED. TL;DR = NO ONE CARES! :) But I quit worrying about it once the whole attack on the Capitol on 1.6.21 occurred. I've had enough of this nonsense. I don't have to sit here and listen to fuggin' NAYSAYERS and people with their heads in the sand. And don't think that the 1.6 date wasn't pivotal. Anyhow. I'm just doing my own thing from now on. Everyone else can go F themselves. I'll do what I what, when I want, how I want, as often as I want. LEAVE ME ALONE. You wanted it, so... YOU GOT IT. Stay away from me, asshats.

People can be very selfish and self absorbed. I remember in Jr. High School a song we sang in chior. One of the lines was "Money, you've got lots of friends coming round your door. But when your down and making ends, they don't come round, they don't come round no more." I didn't realize the truth or depth of that at such a young age at all. They were just words of a song. I'm 62 now and completely understand how true it is. Even family turn their backs on you and like you, it was made worse by my absolute and complete, not having it, dislike of trump. I couldn't and still can't stand to look at him. Unfortunately I found myself alienated by the few friends and family that I had left. I hope you you realize, as I have, years and years ago, No matter who rejects you, Never reject yourself. God bless and stay strong. F the Fn Fers. lol

This is such an important topic! I've gone through something similar years ago when I was still a teen (in '13), it's gotten so many regular functions of my body out of whack and I felt like an entirely different person. Sometimes life just felt like existing with no point ahead. Since having first-hand experience of what a less serious virus (in my case likely H1N1 swine flu) can do to even kids that were young, healthy and barely ever sick, I knew this would likely transfer to an emerging pathogen of that scope. This left me with an awkward feeling of intrigue, like "How would an infection affect me if I already have such symptoms?" (I decided the earlier variants were too dangerous to intentionally risk it), now I can say (triple-mRNA Pfizer done last December if anyone cares). Yes, the troat- and cough-related stuff of the infection was serious for me, but luckily if anything it has gotten me into a better state of mind than I was in before, I feel like continuing with my life, like fighting through, not merely withering away basement-dwelling and eating too much. Yes, I'm very special in that regard, but the fact that the pandemic is now finally basically over for me unless more immune-escaping mutations arise, is such a relief. My deepest condolences for those still affected from various stuff, I can obviously not assess if you could've feasibly prevented your prolonged suffering, but I really hope you get recognition and won't just end up with a cocktail of pharmaceutica until some form of tragic death. Been there, contemplated suicide already, I'm glad I'm finally out of it and can go on with my life including all those things that I missed (including but not limited to having a 'normal' partnership and so on). My mental state is far improved now (admittedly I'm on some weak antidepressant) and I can rather safely say my somewhat fruitless ordeal with doctors is over mostly. It's sad what I missed, but it's in the past. Having understood it basically all help me coping.

I’ve had ME/CFS for over 20 years and my heart breaks for these formally full-time employees encountering this mysterious disease for the first time. I had to stop working full-time and instead started a freelance patternmaking business which organically grew into a full package apparel business, and after I got covid in 2020 when my symptoms got much worse but by that point thankfully I had long-standing clients who support me. I don’t have to work every day in the office as a business owner and the ability to take a day off here and there has been crucial. After 20 years of dealing with this, the honest truth is I’ve completely given up on doctors. But starting a business actually really helped with the neurological symptoms, and the other thing I do that helps is exercise once weekly or bimonthly (strength training and cardio). That might sound crazy I know, but my body at least, does *slowly* start to get back in shape with increased stamina and momentum. For the past year and a half I’ve been exercising then crashing for a few days to 2 weeks. This week, for the first time since I got covid, I was able to work the day after exercising and I plan to do 30-45 mts of cardio tmrw. Before 2020, I actually went snowboarding annually. That’s how much stamina I had built up. A beta blocker to keep my heart rate down has been helpful post 2020 too. I never got to the point where I was “back to normal” but I could function, enough, with breaks. Basically sadly I’ve just had to learn how to live with it, but I hope this helps somebody who’s newly confounded by long covid. I remember that time was so stressful. The body may lose some functionality but it is still capable of learning new skills, as challenging as that might be.

Disability has several layers of appeals. It seems like those who are faking get it easy, while those who aren't have issues.

More like the default response is to reject claims, until you bring in a lawyer. We got "lucky" that my late hubby had a condition on the automatic-qualification list, but that's probably because folks in that state may not live through a standard yearslong disability fight. It's tragic, and ridiculous that the system is setup this way.

@@mandisaw I knew a lady that had developed a neurological disease so bad she could barely feed herself. It took her 11 years to get her disability. I also knew a guy that walked in and got his disability without a rejection over a 'bad back', though it wasn't so bad he couldn't ride a snowmobile, jet ski, atv, or climb ladders.

seems like long COVID is more of an issue pre vaccines? Either way this is a reminder of how terrifying COVID is and why despite everyone's insistance that its over I continue to wear my mask whenever I am in a tight crowded space.

No, more of an issue after the vaccines. More of an issue after radiation poisoning.

Some preliminary studies seem to point to higher viral load as a potential indicator of developing long Covid. Folks who get Covid after vaccination experience - typically - a lower viral load, milder case, etc so there may be some protection, leading to fewer cases among vaccinated ppl. But there are cases where vaccinated folks *still* got long Covid, so clearly there are more factors in play.

Most long term issues tend to be from those who have not received vaccines. Granted its still possible to get a long term if your vaccinated but its not as common and if you did it supposedly won't last as long as those who did not have the vaccine. So its best to have a vaccine, and if your not comfortable its good to have a mask with you just incase.

Those are very rare. This is affecting as many as 1/3 people who get it even without any symptoms at all and has a 90% chance for some degree of brain damage if it is severe. The effects of such are also much more debilitating.

I used to work at Walmart, I got covid in 2021 and I haven't been able to recover, my taste and smell is distorted and I sleep up to 14-16 hours. I cough up white bubbly foam idk if anyone else does but I'm scared. I've mades jokes to my husband that I have "rabies" , I really think I'm going to die sooner than later. I just turned 27 this month. Also I've noticed that my body isn't producing enough body heat for me to be comfortable idk if that makes sense. My future is looking dimmer everyday
