Could mechanize this whole process, none of the steps look like they would not benefit from that. Want to have sustainable energy? sure, slap wind or solar generators on it. Just have to fine-tune the material of the various rollers. (as the stems have an approximately uniform thickness that needs to be cut through, a machine can do that. the extraction can be done between a pair of rollers, followed by another set to bundle the fibers. Use solar powered steam or the like to dry (could use heated rollers), and a few seconds later, the silk thread is in an auto-loom that weaves it into fabric. Downside? All lakes would be cleared of lotus stems within a single lotus season. But hey, that is the price of efficient manufacturing.
