A video essay comparing two incredibly similar rom coms, Before Sunrise and Before We Go.
In this video essay, I discuss how Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise and Chris Evan's Before We Go contrast each other and showcase the barriers to love and relationships as people grow up and at different stages of life.

Nothing beats before trilogy, it's a master piece of love story unlike any other. Being full of dreamy scenes yet a lot of real life in it. It's depth is so simple, it's pretty much indescribable for me.

I watched Before We Go first and I like it so much but after watching the entirety of the Before Trilogy I ended up loving these movies. They form a well-rounded view of age, relationships and life in general. I'm a fan of movies that deals with connection but in that regard both The Before Trilogy and Lost in Translation are superior movies.

I don't why you are bashing before sunrise. Yeah they are talking like philosopher and have these ideas because they are young. When you are in your 20s you do behave like that. This was the whole idea of the movie. And it's not the only movie. It's a trilogy where they meet again and in second film they do talk about those baggage and are not so philosophical. If you watch the third film you will see how a true relationship is portrayed. They argue and banter. I think this trilogy is one the most realistic portrayal of a relationship that I have ever seen. Its grounded and even when you listen to the conversation it feels very real. Thats just my opinion. I think if you doing a comparison then you should have compared the before sunset and this movie. Then it would have been a better comparison as both have similar plot. The age and the realistic approach that you talked about is explored in the second part.

Sony Rawat totally agree! Everything is romanticized when your in your 20’s as in your 30’s life begins to happen and strip away at the romantic and dreamlike way you used to look at life and love! Whoch is unfortunate the one thing i can say for both movies which would NEVER HAPPEN TODAY IS! The way both couples met! If the likeness of both movoes were made today it would be 2 dopey millennials having a conversation through a subreddit post or dating site and deciding after the background checkup of one another through social media a d knowing everything about their lives finally agree to meet! END CREDITS! Now that would be boring and lame thats what is wrong today nothing organically like how these two couples met happen anymore because both parties would have to have CONVERSATION and these days with everyone being so socially inept because of said technology it would be one boring ass stupid vapid cold remake of two movies with actual relatability! its a sad commentary on todays society that this is what we see as socializing! This Generation ABSOLUTELY SUCKS! There are no more surprises and wonderment because all our info is there for the viewing!

Yh I get that the Before Sunset would have been a better comparison but that wasn’t the comparison that millions of articles did and also bashed a masterpiece. I think that the video was great coz it reminds us that a lot of effort went in the movie for it to just be called plagiarism and all her points were valid. your whole point is that the second movie would’ve been a better comparison but I don’t think ur saying it to the right person. Say it to the millions of articles that made Before We Go a flop. A beautiful artistic... flop.

I guess the thing about before we go. Is that regardless of the context, the structure was so apparent. When I wanted that awkward moment to happen, it happened. When I wanted them not to be too sappy, they weren't. When I wanted it to be real, it was real. With Before Sunrise it was what I wanted before I even knew what I wanted. Jesse had baggage when he met Celine. They both didn't need to have baggage to connect with each other. And that was the point. It was this geniune instant connection. Nick and Brooke had a bad day, and had baggage. Clearly they were gonna connect to some degree if they got pass the shit storm of the first impression. Brooke was a sweetheart who had a reason to be bitter. Celine was intelligent, funny, and had a ballsy attitude. Its easy to feel sympathy for Brooke. But Celine was challenging, she literally challenged us, even as she got old. There you go. Life is indeed shit often times. And ey you might connect with someone who has it shitty too. But you might connect with someone who never had a shiitty life at all, who isnt smart, who isnt this unexpected thing either.

Your criticism about seeing the dead grandmother I believe is unfair. I thought they lead up to the moment very naturally and the point was he felt comfortable enough to reveal something personal about him without feeling he was going to be judged for it. He knew that Celine was visiting her grandmother and wanted to express that he also feels close to his own grandma so they could bond further. I did not feel that he was giving serial killer vibes and was impressed by how the film does not take a cynical when it comes to the themes it explores.

I haven't seen Before We Go but it seems like a lot staler of a version of Before Sunrise (at least from the way you portrayed it here). The philosophy, the romanticism, the naivete are all crucial parts of Before Sunrise. As a film, it is saying something about youth as much as it is saying something about love. The implication that characters have to have serious external baggage to be interesting is so jaded. To me, the saddest and most truly relatable part of Before Sunrise is how these relatively undamaged people are still just as existentially frustrated as everyone but briefly relieved in this one moment. That, in my experience, is a truer representation of falling in love than I have seen anywhere else. It seems to me that Before We Go is more about damage than it is about love.

I loved both movies despite their similarities and contrary to what most people say, I think Evans did a great job. I watched Before we go in my 30s and probably felt it was more realistic at the time and age, but equally enjoyed the dreamy escape from reality of Before Sunrise. The idea of meeting a stranger randomly and finding chemistry with them is a rather fascinating one and will continue to be so. After watching these movies multiple times I went on to look for similar others and found It's already tomorrow in Hong Kong and many others.

I love both of the movies and, this is embarrassing, never recognized the similarities. I just loved them for what they were. Each having their unique, exclusive space. That said, this video here, has made me appreciate 'Before we go' even more. While watching this, I kept comparing the movie to 'before sunset' (my favourite from the trilogy) and there, the comparison becomes a little more interesting. Here, we can speak about the difference in 'maturity' and 'life-stuff'. There, with 'Before Sunset', the odds become more even. And, we see characters take different decisions even with kind of similar stakes. I'll think about that more. Anyways, thanks for pushing me into this thought-rabbit-hole. It's not a bad place to be. All the best! 🤗

i think it’s unfair to compare and contrast these two as before sunrise is part of a trilogy while before we go is a stand alone film. Viewers would have a better perception and understanding of Before Sunrise if they happened to watch the other two films. Before We Go has so much similarities with BS, making me to think BWG used BS as a reference material. But despite these, I like before we go better than the trilogy because I was having a hard time to connect immediately with the characters and actors of before sunrise in personal level. You have to watch the entirety of the movie/trilogy (BS) to get the bigger picture in the frame. :) but still nice analysis

4:45-4:51 "instead of doing anything valuable" bruhh the whole point of the film (at least I feel) is to emphasize the importance and the value in human connection and the film does that through the dialogue of these philosophical conversations- like that's the whole point. Celine literally says at one point that if God exists, it isn't in a person but in the space between humans in the act of sharing ideas and understanding each other.

might as well compare before we go to before sunset instead, 'cause that seems way more fitting with how you're describing before we go. before sunrise is meant to be, like, more dreamy and naive 'cause that's generally how a relationship feels when it begins (with two young people).
@natielabraithwaite7999

Except not all relationships unfortunately begin so....sometimes true love doesn't come until way later and of course at the most inopportune time cause your already involved or committed....I think this is why before we go is such a beautiful film because it captures the reality of most of out lives which is we often don't find real love until its quite too late.
@joshualee9540
@joshualee9540 Жыл бұрын
@@natielabraithwaite7999 yeah I understand that, tho I think whenever people criticize Before We Go, especially using Before Sunrise or Before Sunset as the benchmark, most of it comes from how undeniably great the performances are in the Before Trilogy. Even then, Before Sunset is low-key dark and bleak, even if the ending is rather positive.
@natielabraithwaite7999
@natielabraithwaite7999 Жыл бұрын
@@joshualee9540 I think the reason for before sunrise being the benchmark and not the entire trilogy is the fact that these two shows were highly critiqued as before we go being sort of a piggyback off of before sunrise especially with the similarity of the settings and scenes and I think what the video did was highlighted the vast difference between the two shows even with all their similarity.

Interesting how you say the Before Sunrise dialogue sounds like rehearsed speeches, when actually most of the dialogue was improvised through conversations between linklater and the two actors. Their conversations center around their ideas in life, and if you factor in the little details they shared about their experiences, their views on life makes sense especially considering their age, as you said. I also think its sad that you seem to have never had an intellectual conversation as the one in Before Sunrise centering around ideas, beliefs, and fantasies. It's not often yes, but the whole point of the movie was to showcase a brief, perhaps rare connection as theirs was, and I consider myself lucky to have been a part of a conversation like that. Not all conversations have to be about trauma and baggage, but they are more common and considering the year Before We Go was made, I feel all conversations I have these days center around topics as those two discussed. Which is what made the connection in Before Sunrise special in my opinion, but who knows, it might just be because I have an undying love for the film. I find it more romantic when one glosses over directly asking about my history and trauma, but instead gets to know my views, ideas, and observations on life, then slowly unravels who I am as a person from those. But perhaps, that's just me.

"No matter where you are in life, there's always the chance of finding someone you connect with and not having it work out. Because regardless of time and place, sometimes love just isn't enough." So realistic and true that it brings tears to my eyes. But the optimist in me will always hope, that at the back of that hotel suggestion card, Nick wrote that they should meet again at the hotel in some years or so. And that in her mind, she agreed. (Yes, just like in Before Sunrise. I don't care.) And that later, they met again. And that at that time, they both agreed that what they had was worth a shot.

I'm so relieved to hear someone else defending Before We Go. I watched Before Sunrise in the 90s once and was unmoved. I then watched both sequels because everyone raves about these movies yet remained unmoved. If anything, I think I hated the characters even more. The characters are flawed but still likable, their dialogue flows naturally and doesn't sound contrived, and the actors have remarkable chemistry.

Why in the hell would you bash Before Sunrise? I mean yeah okay i get it you liked Before We Go, but telling that it's a good film and being in a denial and denying that a film you like wasn't a rip-off when it kinda was are totally different things. I have seen both the movies and I find Before Sunrise better because there is some reality in the way they talk. Their life is just getting started and they're full of dreams, something wrong with that? If you see the next 2 sequels you'll see its filled more with how adults talk and how every relationship needs working. Good effort but stop bashing a good film to prove your point.

She wasnt bashing before sunrise. She was stating how thematically Before we go is nothing like before sunrise. And i have to agree with her. Before we go wasnt a movie that was talking about hope or any of the stuff before sunrise was. Thats the point. Before we go is a realistic look at the one night stand esc relationship that could happen for two thirty somethings who have crappy lives. Before sunrise is the movie that tries to show and inspire people that love is important and that there is hope and our dreams matter.

Sweetheart, as someone who grew up with "Before XYZ" series without ever watching the first one of the trilogy & someone who just recently discovered "Before We Go" I would like to say, these are like two books. Yes, each book is made of pages and each page has the same number as the other book and the vocabulary is more or less the same, but the content of two books can be widely different. "Before We Go" tells the story of two individuals who are victim to their romantic choices and often avoid confrontations and making hard-choices in their lives and it is only the one night they are together that they feel empowered to do so, while have had agonized over those events for years! FOR YEARS! "Before Sunset" though I haven't watched it, is a movie about youth and romance and taking chances and being an intellectual and experimenting with romance! These have literarily nothing to do with each other. Absolutely nothing to do with each other. In fact, in some ways, they are the opposites; The first movie is about two individuals who are just waiting for a tigger to take risks, the later is about two individuals who have spent their lives believing they have to keep up with victimhood to preserve their half-hearted shot at romance, while only for the length of a night, having the opportunity to realize how empty their lives have been all these years! This two has nothing to do with each other! Also, also, the male actor on the first one is a whole another caliber, and also, also, the story telling techniques used are wildly different. In the "Before XYZ" trilogies, the dialogue is so important, while in the "Before We Go" the dialogue is just setting up the context and it is the context and how those two individuals are making choices constantly during that night that reveals the story. In "Before XYZ" movies, the scenery and actions are just placeholder for a beautiful background, you can change them and they won't affect the story. In "Before We Go" you can change the dialogue and it won't change the story. All the dialogue though seem quite significant is merely acting as a filler! These are really wildly different techniques! With all that being said, I hope you take it as a compliment that you were on the right track only that your track never really left the station in the correct direction! There are more disturbing stuff about "Before We Go" but if you like to hear them, write me a fan letter/reply after reading the Gazette that is out there: chiaroscuro.press - Maybe you could remake a new edition for your essay with the analysis that I haven't published and we share it ...

The most fucked up analogy I’ve ever heard. Before Sunrise is a great movie. And I understand that these are the views of the video creator, but there should be a disclaimer proclaiming exactly that.

Hmm so maybe it shares more similarities with Before Sunset instead.

I get your point. There are foundational plot points that make the outcome different. But your review sometimes seems like you weren’t ever a stupid idealistic 20 year old or a more realistic 30 year old. Most of us have sone kind of momentary encounter that we wish we’d been able to pursue and another that we did that changed as we did. I think all four (the Before trilogy and Before we go) have a place. I just wish that the screenwriters of Before We Go had been more creative. Unless they were deliberately trying to place BWG as a counterpoint to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.

wow have you even watched before sunrise? your review is completely wrong starting from the fact that they're rich you adults without emotional buggage, lol the before trloy is a masterpiece (imo) the dialogues are perfect. and tbh I had the luck to have a similar expierence a few years ago in my early twenties, I met an australian man who was traveling across europe and something happened ( much less than what happened in the movie because we didn't have hours to spend together , my fault I was very hesitant) anyway, it DOES happen as portrayed in the movie, sometimes you can really see the electricoty and the sparks between two people. sometimes maic happens :) Before we go on the other hand, was fairly well shot, but the female character was too flat imo and the overall plot wasn't that intriguing... as I said what makes the before trilogy unique are the dialogues, and before we go has pretty bland dialogues :( That's pretty much what even Chris evans has said in interview: if you lack substance you can't do much.

Before We Go was amazing. Bland dialogues 😂😂 u need to watch Before Sunrise again and see which one has bland dialogues. Before We Go was beautiful and moving and the actress shows an amazing perspective of a lady who has seen the world and is still trapped to the point of breakdown but still is so put together. A truly complex and beautiful individual/ character. P. S stop taking Chris Evans words out of context

And stop comparing Before We Go to the trilogy. It’s being compared to Before Sunrise which some comments say it’s not fair. Well say that to the millions of articles bashing Before We Go comparing it to Before Sunrise. Let’s be honest the only reason why u guys are defending it is coz u have emotional attachment to ur past

Agreed. Two movies only superficially similar, with Before We Go far superior to its predecessor under all standpoints.

Your only criticism of Before Sunrise is that the characters had no baggage. Why is it so important for people to have baggage? These two characters are young and in their twenties. They can have baggage later, which they do if you actually watch the sequels. Such mindless criticism can only come from an American wannabe emo teenager who hasn't met enough people in life to understand the diversity of the human experience.

Before we go is much more dramatic, making the whole "love in one night" much more real. Talking about this "love emotion" then "Before We Go" is much better, but about love in a realistic way then Linklater's "Before Midnight" is better.

Lol I don't get it, like I've watched the entirety of before trilogy, yet for some reason and unlike everyone else, It didn't even come close to how much I loved or felt moved with before we go.. To me even if its a ripoff which I don't see it that way, it's still alot better than the trilogy for some reason. Maybe because it felt more real and better chemistry to me. And for the fact that it took only 95min to love these characters yet in BS it took me 3 movies to get the full picture or even like them.

Before we go is way better and realistic than before sunrise. Before sunrise represents the idealism in your 20s while before we go represents the realities and responsibilities on your 30s
