These Nepalese pilots would be great at landing and taking off jet fighters from aircraft carriers.

Before you think any negative about Lukla, let me remind u all ' the pilots are one experienced , who takes you there......... not any rookies . And if there's even slightest change in weather the whole flight's cancelled . So people it is very safe n' no need to worry.

I was there in March 2011 - this airport has a fearsome reputation for obvious reasons - the flight from Kathmandu is amazing though!!
@biduradhikari335710 жыл бұрын
Neplease are proud coz they able to build airport in that high altitude and landscape. it is kind of impossible to construct airport there as this place got mountain weather and surrounded by hills. many friend are worry about landing of airbus a380 and boing 757 however, this airport isnot designed for giant aircraft. only light n twin-tors planes can land and take off from this airport. the Himalayan nation Nepal got another 44 domestic airports and one of those is international airport where airbus and boing can be landed. this is of course a dangerous airport but pilots are highly experienced so crash rate is lower then 0.002% in the airport. however, some crashed happened when planes collided in hills as the weather went wrong.

The high altitude and and the unpredictable weather is probably the most crucial factor for making this airport an extreme point. however the runway is almost very short in this airport

This is "the gateway to Everest" only for crazy turist , for all those mountain climbers and researchers. It's also how the locals get their supplies from the city. Unfortunately there isn't much flat space in the Himalayas.

You can forget about A380s landing, build a bigger airport for A330s and B777s, that will be enough for Nepal. There is no infrastructures to cater for such big number of passengers landing in one go.
@Aviatorspot9 жыл бұрын
Ya. B777 is too big also, only A330/A320 will do if Nepal need more tourism to grow the economy for the country.Its a very poor country unless the govern want to improve the life of its people.

Short runway, not much to make an adjustment if something goes awry, you'll be over the cliff but not flying.
@fredc55639 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the 2860 m elevation means much lower air pressure. You need more speed (hence longer runway) to get the lift for takeoff...

thanks,was about to ask, it looks like Otter, but only has one engine, and apparently it almost take off as helicopter...
@petehuskins9 жыл бұрын
Not sure Id say it looked like an Otter but yes, it can take off on very short runways. Great planes, used for skydiving quite a lot. Swiss made though so quite expensive.
@69Phuket9 жыл бұрын
Rich who don't want to fly economy in Otter. Gambling though with one engine. Rich gambling hikers....probably looking at a prospect to fuck up the Himalayas!
@petehuskins9 жыл бұрын
Hmm? Im not sure about "fucking up the Himalyas" Im not suggesting that tourism hasnt had an enviromental impact on the region, but the money bought in by tourists over the past 60 yrs has vastly improved the living standards of the people living in the area allowing previously extremely poor people to have access to health-care and educate their children.

That is the most craziest but surely interesting airport ever seen. The Aircraft park zone look like a high school basketball court. This is awesome. And one of the few airports of this nature outside the French Alps, from what I read (it's an "Altiport", or airport with an inclined runway.
@AshleyPomeroy9 жыл бұрын
raakone I wonder how many aircraft ended up with damaged landing gear - it looks as if the incline would be unforgiving if your descent was too great.

Ive flown in and out of Lukla about a dozen times. I think getting there is more scarey, loads of turbulance as you pass over hundreds of valleys and ridges. Is this video new, it looks like they,ve extended the taxi-way to the other side of the runway?
@extremeadventurespakistan41872 жыл бұрын
Great video, the flight seems scary until you are finally in the air , the airport is as small as Gilgit airport in northern areas of Pakistan

the thin air and mountains and fast changing weather can't imagine it being open during the winter.
@MatthiasHaffner9 жыл бұрын
I have been there taking off. Great! Not so dangerous as you put it! There was a deadly accident 13 years ago I think, OK. But daily there leave and land up to 100 airplanes I think... when the weather is ok.
@MsJubjubbird9 жыл бұрын
If you don't follow procedure to a tee it is. Because there is so very little margin for error and the weather can change so quickly. But these are specialised and very skilled pilots with specific training who would take their job very seriously.

@rhagedorn10 жыл бұрын
There's no margin for error, especially on takeoffs.
@sharpfang10 жыл бұрын
Why, you'd have to try really hard not to get in the air on take-off! No need for engine, no need for wings, just put something on wheels on the top end of the runway, let it roll down to the bottom end, and a second later it's in the air!
@ProChoiceJesus11 жыл бұрын
The most enjoyable departure was that Pilatus Porter at the end. An extreme STOL aircraft, he got off in less than 1/2 the runway length! Awesome. I kept seeing it parked off to the right & thought how cool it'd be to see it takeoff. Then I saw prop spinning but video was almost over. I didn't really believe I'd see it leave as most aren't as excited over a smaller, single-engine aircraft. Well, a pilot like me is way more excited over a taildragger Porter than a commuter. Thanks for filming it!
@eyan11143 жыл бұрын
