Lust has ruined my life, taken away my membership, and consequently keeps me from being able to enter the temple. I have struggled for years to overcome this deadly sin to no avail. Yes I feel the guilt shame and hopelessness that lust causes. I have not given up on repenting but have yet to succeed. I know the church is true. The book of Mormon is true. And that Joseph Smith is a true prophet of God. It doesn't stop me from lusting.😢😢

The best talk on the topic of lust and chastity is "Of Souls, Symbols, and Sacraments" by Elder Holland. It was a BYU Devotional given January 12, 1988. I can't think of anyone who has ever talked about the spiritual implications of keeping, or not keeping the law of chastity quite like Elder Holland does.

Lust ruled me for the better part of a decade. It took a painfully transformative experience to over come it. It went from being “hopelessly, helplessly dark” to manageable. I had to make the choice at the deepest level, so deep it felt like unraveling my DNA, to say I will not give into it no matter what but savior I cannot do this without you. All previous attempts failed miserably because I didn’t choose, no matter what, to stay away from it. And also practical advice from my bishop helped a lot in ensuring success. Remember, guilt lets us know something is wrong and that it should be fixed, shame says there is no fixing it or that you’re not worth fixing. The savior never shames you.

Constant prayer helps. Accompanied with daily scripture reading and simply praying when all hope seems lost helps. I know. Lust is something strong not easily overcome, yet its possible to win over it. Have faith he well deliver you. Hes alway there ready to rescue us like he did peter when he was drowning. Believe.

Lust has enormous capacity to cause suffering. It can cause poor self image and self control, STDs, broken marriages, inability to connect deeply with partners, and serial monogamy instead of families. I am convinced that God gives this law not because he wants us to feel shame and guilt, or to have something to exert control over but rather because he sees the consequences of hedonism

There's a great book by an LDS author that shows that there is perfect harmony between the prophetic statements concerning the garden of Eden being in Missouri and the Old Testament account concerning the garden of Eden. It's called Canaan, Babylon, and Egypt A Comparative Theological Analysis on Creation sold by Eborn Books and Benchmark Books.

Lust destroys individuals, families and nations. It is the first temptation that the adversary through ar the Savior in the wilderness. It took down King David but not the King of Kings. Choosing Christ is allowing him to control our very desires.

Lust is bad (and is always talked about) However it would be good (or even better) to "focus" on "Lack of Love" (found in many marriages today)! Thats the "core problem" / and root. (but its almost never talked about). Symptoms happen for a reason, but finding its root core, and trying to prevent it is probably the best approach! (preventive and proactive vs "reactive". (Still good video though) :)

The denotation (literal meaning) of the word lust is… a craving or strong desire. It appears that herein Elder Holland is (without clarifying) using a specific connotation of lust (sexual craving) as the subject of his sermon. Regardless, lust is a craving. Any craving (any lust), if uncontrolled, can negatively effect human lives. The lust for sexual pleasure without commitment and control is destructive. As an example just study virtually every individual, community and society that has embraced polygamy. The practice of polygamy is evil and destructive to the core. What about the lust for money? Very time consuming and arguably insatiable; destructive. What about the lust for power? Singularly the pinnacle of evil. The answer is developing self-control. As I mentioned in an earlier thought, Jesus Christ taught a better you, a better world and a better eternity through self-control. Why don’t we all commit to work on our own self-control? The more we control our thoughts and our actions the more we fulfill the two great commandments.

May I point out what appears to be a traditional and very generational flaw in the teachings from pulpits. Ministers from all organized religions teach the gospel of Paul. They do not teach the gospel of Jesus Christ (at least not exclusively). This can be very confusing to those who seek the truth (even to the pure in heart). There is a huge difference and as I have mentioned, it is generational. Virtually all of Paul’s teachings focus on sin, guilt and destruction; like lust. Jesus never taught about the negative influence of lust. Jesus never taught the gospel of guilt. Jesus taught the gospel of self-control and the resulting blessings of self-improvement. Jesus always taught the gospel of hope and the gospel of a better world through a better you. If we each study and practice self-control then as the old saying goes “practice makes perfect” and lust eventually is not an issue. If we each study about lust, then it is more commonly on our minds and for many “a stumbling block”. It may seem a subtle and semantic difference. You may think it is too trivial a difference to be from two different authors, but I declare to you that there is a huge difference and distinction between the gospel of Paul and the gospel of Jesus Christ. May I remind you that all Lucifer needs to do is teach one degree off from true North to deceive the whole world. I declare that Paul was the wolf in sheep’s clothing that Jesus warned us was coming right behind Him. Ask yourselves, how many prophets of God were persecutors and murderers of saints and other prophets prior to being called of God to the ministry? In the entirety of human history, none other than Paul.

Thank you for your comment Harold and for your clarification of Scripture and of Christ’s teachings… and for your patient kindness in teaching. After all these years of reading and studying I did not realize that Jesus was using a large and profound, eternal concept and truth such as the true nature of personal purity to make a specific point about one narrow definition of the sin of lust. All this time I thought Jesus was teaching us that personal purity is an internal issue of the heart instead of an external, superficial issue of appearance to the world. What a fool I was. But what you are saying is that this larger, eternal truth does not matter and was not the subject of the sermon. That Jesus was not using lust as an example of the larger truth of where personal purity begins. What you are saying is that Jesus was using the infinitely larger and eternally more important concept of personal purity as an example for brow beating over sexual lust. Thanks to you, after all these years, now I get it. Jesus is so clever. I guess it’s true what Jesus said, some things are only for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. I feel embarrassed and fooled. Oh, and thank you for the kindness of spirit in which you opened my eyes to this narrow definition of eternal truth. I think I will now go back to sleep.
