I've been very interested in the Lutheran Church for the past year, the last few years I've been reminding myself and the Lord. The path has brought me here. I've had many conversations with many denominations and I find Lutheran's more willing to talk about ones journey without bias or judgment. The tenants you all hold up are very much appreciated! Also thank you for these videos they have come in very handy during my personal walk with the Lord.

I heard a great explanation of "why Lutheran" a few years ago while talking to a pastor we were interviewing to be our pastor and the question came up....why Lutheran?....his answer was, "because we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if". Stop and think about that for a minute...we don't have anything we have to do to be saved. No works, no alter calls, no giving ourselves over, we just have to have belief, and be baptized, that's it. Our sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ, He came to earth, died for us, was raised from the grave. That's it, that's all we need. Ask for forgiveness, and you will be forgiven.
@JohnPeters-qz2zb2 жыл бұрын
"...because we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if" ... we just have to have belief, and be baptized". That sounds a whole lot like there is an "if". How about "we just have to have belief" full stop? A lot of denominations do NOT see water baptism as salvific. Just faith. Lutherans - at least the hardcore Lutherans - tell parents that they must take their infants to infant baptism because that's the way the infant is saved. When pressed on the scriptural problems they give all kinds of ifs and buts and of course the good old "remember; it's God's work - not ours. It's a gift!". But parents still have to do it, they say. And when parents do it, the infant gets new life, they say. Non-Lutheran bible believers on the other hand go with the clear message of scripture: That whosoever believe in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life (regardsless of any kind of so-called "sacraments" like infant baptism). When you read Luther and prominent Lutherans you realize that Luther wasn't very consistently "sola fide" and "sola scriptura" in his views. He still had a lot of tradition and sacramentalism in his thinking, and today it's right there in Lutheranism. It's just being toned down with nice rhetoric like "we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if"".
@christhiele44763 ай бұрын
@@JohnPeters-qz2zbbut the Bible literally says that Baptism and the Lord Supper are a part of salvation. Read John 6. “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.” John 6:53-57 And Baptism is frequently linked with the forgiveness of sins in scripture. I’m not trying to discredit what you’re saying at all. Without belief and faith, we have absolutely nothing. But this idea that many low Church protestants have that sacraments don’t really do any thing just isn’t scriptural. They weren’t inventions of the Roman Catholic Church. It’s right there in scripture alongside the essentially of faith and belief. You can’t just hone in on one and ignore the others. Anyways just a thought, not trying to argue. God bless
@JS_Guitar095 күн бұрын
@@JohnPeters-qz2zb We should not be "Solo Scriptura." The Lutheran traditions align with scripture. Read John 3:5 and Mark 16:16. Read John 6:53 and Matthew 26:28. The Sacraments are Biblical means of grace, and we must be baptized and participate in the Eucharist. By your logic, we could say only baptism is necessary based on 1 Peter 3:21, which says baptism saves you but has no mention of faith. Romans 6:4 also speaks of how baptism saves us without ever mentioning faith. John 6:54, there is again no mention of faith, this time it's the Eucharist that saves us. But no. Baptism and Eucharist are the means God uses to give grace to His people. It isn't a suggestion when Jesus says "Repent and be baptized." Colossians 2:12 calls baptism the circumcision made without hands. So, why not "we just have to believe"? Because that is not taught in the Bible! We are saved by grace through faith. Not by faith through faith. How do we get grace? Sacrament. How do we receive grace? Faith. Sola Fide has never meant "only believe," it means that we are saved by faith and not by our works. You complain that we call baptism a work of God, but that is exactly what it is. In the same way that faith is solely a work of God, because He gives us faith, He leads us to be baptized. You could say that repentance denies Sola Fide, but repentance is part of Sola Fide. Repentance is something God enables and entices us to do with His grace, and so is participation in the sacraments. I believe the above commenter was trying to say "there is no work on our part that will save us," but it was a weird way of saying it. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; unless you have a problem with the Bible, that is.

I too was raised Catholic, but my father was Lutheran (Augustiana Synod). While I consider myself agnostic (too long a story to go into here) I am currently attending the same ELCA church he did when we first moved to Kalamazoo. I feel this is a way of getting in touch with my heritage and honoring my father. He once confided to me that he regretted signing the agreement that the Catholic Church required him to sign when he married my mother that all of us children would be raised Catholic and that he would not interfere with that. That was about the only time he ever discussed his faith with me. I find a lot of similarities between the two faiths. However, I had to laugh a couple of Sundays ago when they honored St. Teresa of Avila during the intercessory prayer as a "reformer". That she was indeed, but her idea of reform and Luther's were two different things! Both of them must be rolling in their graves. In fact, I jokingly asked the organist (a long-time friend), "Are you sure this is a Lutheran church? Because it sure feels Catholic to me!"

I´m pentecostal (methodist) from Chile, but I really love the Lutheran church, and I appreciate the tradition, I believe we are 1 church, and continuing from the apostles to today, I don´t like the "philosophy that some evangelicals and most pentecostal have that all "catholic things" are bad things", I think they focus too much on not being like roman catholic even when that means changing our traditions to "new ones". I love ancient music, liturgy, robes, even episcopacy. Sadly in my city, there isn´t any Lutheran church, and the 2 Lutheran denominations in chile are very "contemporary style" so I prefer to be at my current church where at least we maintain many traditions from Methodist, like having bishops, annual conferences (assemblies), singing hymns, not signing much contemporary music, women, and men dressing formal, etc. and even when are pentecostal are not charismatic, It´s Classical pentecostal, I could say it´s an episcopal methodist church that accepts the gifts of the Spirit, but maintain much doctrine and order in the services and administration. God bless my Lutheran siblings, and of course my all of my other evangelical siblings (in Chile we say "evangelicos" to all Protestantism). God bless the church :)

Despite all of it's problems I think that Roman Catholicism is an easier system to defend than Lutheranism. The Catholics can just appeal to the authority of The Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church and Holy Tradition whenever their doctrines don't make a whole lot of sense. The Lutherans cannot do that. So they have to use clever rhetoric to defend e.g. their ideas of baptismal regeneration through infant baptism. So if I was a Lutheran I would be very tempted to just accept the full package of Roman Catholicism instead of trying to defend the light version of Lutheranism.

Hi Dr Cooper. The Sola Scriptura argument, that we know the Christian faith by deriving it immediately from the words of Scripture is incorrect both because the Christian faith predates the completed canon of Scripture in the year 392 and because Christ himself never instructed us to learn the Christian faith in this way. Jesus came to found a Church not write a book. The only church with an apostolic succession back to the Apostles is the Catholic Church. When Christ commanded that the faith be passed on to posterity he specifically enjoined apostolic authority and liturgical tradition as the proper modes of its transmission. (Matthew 28; Luke 22:19; Luke 10:16) He says not a word about relying on the Bible alone. Find me a quote in the Bible where Jesus says, “just read my book”.

So when people consider being 'Lutheran' , an important distinction must be drawn between Confessional (Book of Concord) Lutheranism vs. watered down, revisioned Lutheranism which implicitly or explicitly rejects the confessional tradition (compromising with contemporary evangelical Protestant theology , plus a low view of the Church and a low view of worship , with happy-clappy liturgy instead of traditional Divine Liturgy) or even worse , a modernist Lutheranism that has fallen into rank unbelief. I'm curious about how many confessional Lutherans there are in the U.S.A. ? I'm guessing it's a very small community. *Pastor Cooper, if someone was to go looking for the kind of Lutheranism you are teaching , where do they find it ?* Of the self-consciously Confessional Lutherans I know there are the AALC , LCMS, WELS . Are there others ? As both modernist and "evangelical" churches implode , do you think people who are looking for a robust Christian faith will discover the Lutheran Church ? (I put "evangelical" in quotes because I mean how the word is commonly used in the American context , not the classical understanding of the _Evangelische Kirche_ as it was used in the original sense in the Lutheran Reformation. Maybe as the now tarnished term "evangelical" is discarded by the emerging/missional/progressive/neo- ____________ churches ,whatever they are calling themselves now , it can be reclaimed in all its' fullness by English-speaking Lutherans? Sadly the word evangelical now seems to be identified with a certain political ideology. )

Sooo question: The term “Lutheran” was originally a derogatory term used against Luther by Johann Maier von Eck in the Leipzig debate of 1519. Obviously Luther didn’t like the term because he didn’t want a church named after him but to keep church unity (initially) and preferred, as you mentioned, the term “Evangelical.” So if Luther himself didn’t like the term, why is this church still called the “Lutheran” church? Why “Lutheran”?
@richardwebb23484 жыл бұрын
Seth - Do not be mislead, Luther made sure that the church was named for him - he sought fame and riches, raped a nuns, and was a narcissistic, homophobic, entitled, misogynist and an anti- semitic racist - rather like evangelical Trump. Praise be.

Actually in many countries like germany for example the term lutheran is not really used. In my own country it's the same (and we're a lutheran country) It's more a term that is used mainly in english to distinguish us from the many other denominations. But here where almost all christian belongs to the church, the term is rarely ever used.

I grew up in a St Mark's Lutheran Church in Aurora Illinois from Baptism to Confirmation. Id consider it to have been a more Liberal and Progressive Church But an Uncle of mine attends Missouri Synod and it appears to be very Conservative in comparison A quick search shows there's 40 Lutheran Denominations?! Can you please explain what and why?
@BarbaraBrown-e3v Жыл бұрын
Why I became Lutheran, never grown up in any church. Started reading the word when I was in my 30, And I became a believer . I do not call myself a Christian for I am a believer in Christ. I did not belong to any Church, went to many after, and I just found that the things they were doing, was out of the word of God, they were all about themselves ! not sure were God fit into it. I got married to a Lutheran, and just felt the peace, and order that the Church had. We belong to the older way of Church, not evangelical Lutheran Church. I believe that what they teach, is the closes one can get to the truth.

How is it that Lutherans believe salvation comes from faith alone, yet it is the sacraments like baptism that grant us salvation?
@Mygoalwogel2 жыл бұрын
You can only be saved by faith alone if you believe what the Bible says. Matthew 3:15 Jesus insisted that even John's baptism was fitting for them to fulfill all righteousness. A servant is not greater than his Lord. Matthew 3:16 In baptism, the Father claims the Son. The Spirit rests on the Son. Matthew 21:25 Mere water baptism is a gift from Heaven. Matthew 28:19 Make disciples by baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and by teaching. Mark 1:4 Mere water baptism = repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Mark 16:16 *Baptized believers are saved, unbelievers condemned.* Luke 7:29 Even water baptism is a public declaration that God is righteous. Luke 7:30 *Rejecting even mere water baptism = rejecting God's purpose for you.* John 1:31, 33 John knew beforehand that God would reveal the Christ through baptism. Acts 2:38 *Repentance and baptism = forgiveness and the Spirit.* Acts 2:39-41 3000 bachelors, virgins, wives, husbands, and *children of all ages received forgiveness and the Spirit in baptism.* The smallest can't have decided to repent in a mature way, but they were not excluded. Acts 8 Many early church Bible readers saw a distinction between the Spirit's invisible gift of repentance/forgiveness and the Spirit's visible gift of leadership/ordination. Philip the Evangelist could baptize but not bestow spiritual authority. Only the apostles could do that. Acts 22:16 *Baptism washes away sins.* Romans 6:3, 4 *Baptism is death to sin, death with Christ, and newness of life in Christ.* 1 Corinthians 1 Baptism must not turn into hero worship, cliques, and factionalism. 1 Corinthians 12:22, 13 On the contrary, baptism is unity in the one Holy Spirit in Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:29 Even superstitious baptism declares the resurrection of the dead. Galatians 3:27, 28 Baptism clothes every member of the body of Christ in equality. Ephesians 3:5 There is one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. Ephesians 5:26 Baptism sanctifies the Church because it is the washing of water with the word. Colossians 2:11 Baptism is a works-free death, a cutting off of the flesh. Colossians 2:12 Christ was buried. You were buried with Christ *in baptism.* God raised Christ from the dead. You believe God raised Christ from the dead. Therefore, God raised you with Christ *in baptism.* This is all *God’s powerful work.* Hebrews 6:1-2 *Baptism is a basic foundational teaching. You can't say you believe in Jesus while rejecting his basic teachings.* 1 Peter 3:20 Noah was saved by water, not from water. The flood waters washed away much evil. 1 Peter 3:21 Baptism now *saves you!* Baptism is assurance/demand of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This verse summarizes all that has been said above. The Bible does not only say that the Lord's Supper is done in remembrance: Matthew 26:28 Jesus calls it the blood of the covenant. Hebrews 9:20 The author quotes Moses saying the exact same words about real blood. There is no precedent here for saying "is" means "represents." 1 Corinthians 10:16 The bread and the cup are a koinonia (co-union/intimacy/participation/contribution/distribution) of the body and blood of Christ. 1 Cor 11:20 There is an objectively true Lord's Supper. Unreconciled schism within the congregation make it objectively not the Lord's Supper. 1 Cor 10:21-22 The Lord, whose name is Jealous, is jealous of his cup and his table. 1 Cor 11:23 The Lord specifically and personally revealed the Supper to Paul. 1 Cor 11:27 Misuse of the Lord's Supper is not just a bad reenactment. It makes you guilty of sin against the very body and blood of the Lord. 1 Cor 11:28-30 Mere reenactments do not require earnest soul searching on pain of punishment and death. Therefore true Christian faith in these words: "This is my body which is for you, … This is my blood of the new covenant," must take all into account. 1 Cor 5:11 We are not to eat even secular food with christians who do not accept correction. Guests, whose lives are unknown to the pastor, should be catechised first. "Revilers" (who insult our face value belief) are rightly excluded.

Gospel-centered? Not sure about that. Some years ago, I was helping a Lutheran seminarian who needed help writing her research papers. (I was raised Methodist, sort of a non-denominational Christian now.) It required me to read quite a bit of Luther, as well as Lutheran commentaries. I was struck by the fact that Gospels were hardly ever referenced at all by Luther. In fact, nothing about Jesus's teachings. It was all St. Paul's teachings.
@treewalker10705 жыл бұрын
And what about the teachings about afterlife -- heaven and hell? That is in neither the Gospels nor in Paul. Quote from the web "Lutherans believe that anyone who hasn't accepted Jesus as his savior and who doesn't believe that the Lord saved them from their sins will go to hell. In hell, a person suffers eternal damnation in the presence of the Devil. .Lutherans believe that once in hell, a person spends eternity there." There is no Biblical basis for this. Maybe you could make a video about this subject.

The gospel is grace by faith. That was Luther's main point. And his distain for indulgences.

No, salvation by works is the thing Luther railed against. He didn't like the book of James bc it doesn't emphasize grace alone as much as Paul did. I grew up Baptist, but Luther is a hero among Baptists. He was for salvation by grace alone, truth and authority from the Bible alone....and he was anti Roman. Not sure what the official position is concerning baptism. It would run contrary to Luther's teaching for ANYTHING to be required for salvation.....it comes through grace and faith alone.

Grace only (and salvation by works is an abomination), Priesthood of all believers, sol scriptura, and a strong anti catholic sentiment. Wait, am I describing Baptist or Lutheran theology? @@IanErickson-z2g lol "Truths that Baptists reject " is the same thing as "he taught false concepts which Baptists reject" There was SO much error in the church at that time, Luther couldn't possibly correct ALL the nonsense the catholics were teaching in only one lifetime. See, we both can pretend our interpretations are the right ones. OR, we could just say that there are different interpretations, and whatever the Spirit reveals to you is what you should follow. That way we can discuss theology without thinking anyone has THE interpretation. If we think there is ONE interpretation, then we can never have unity. We can only be united if we accept our differences.

@@langreeves6419 (Sorry, I was rushing earlier, so may have mistyped somethings) Luther also countered the anabaptists at the time. In the Lutheran Church, it seems Jesus has to share the limelight with Martin Luther. Why do Lutherans follow and make a big deal over Luther and not solely Jesus Christ? Martin Luther is an imperfect sinner like the rest of humanity, with the exception of Jesus. He is no more spiritual, special, holy, or worthy of God's love and salvation than me or anyone else. Jesus died for me, not Luther. I'm sure he was a great guy, loved Jesus, and was a wise man, but he's just a man. It seems odd to elevate a man so much. I don't see the wisdom in following anyone other than Jesus Christ and him alone. Jesus shouldn't have to share the limelight with any human. I'm just curious and seeking understanding. ☺

Gary Pierce I’d start by learning more about Martin Luther as a historical figure, but in this case specifically the reason Luther is so important to Lutherans is the same reason Muhammad is so important to Muslims. They aren’t a different religion, but they have their own beliefs that he defined, and claiming someone’s ideology means dealing with them as a person. Not to mention, most people who seek to learn about Lutherans already know about Jesus.
@johnpowers30136 жыл бұрын
As a practicing LCMS Lutheran, I can tell you definitively that most Lutherans know very little about Martin Luther, and that is fine with them because Lutheranism is not about Luther. It is about returning the focus of Christianity back to Jesus' death for all our sins on the cross and the promise of salvation for all who believe that. God's blessing to you.

Living like Jesus teaches is what matters. Organized religion has nothing to do with salvation or what is healthy for the soul. Living in harmony with God's will is all that matters and we do that everytime we show lovingkindness towards others. All morality is bound up in love from others. Having a change of heart and coming to know that we are in God and that God is in us and that the divine nature is the true nature of man.
