Kirlia is a great example of this in the current paper tcg. Its card draw ability is so crucial that people only have 1 Garde on the bench but 2 or 3 Kirlia on the bench.

It’s also super effective against Yanmega which is a Darkrai killer and Moltres which is key for Charizard. There’s a lot of cards people put on the front line or use as finishers in general that are weak to electric.

Because of the addition of dawn, you can run dragonite decks with only water energy, and use magneton + dawn to get the dragonite the one electric energy it needs. I haven’t tried but it sounds good in theory and could be cool to play

I’ve been running a similar deck with Manaphy and dual energy. Once I get a second Dawn I might switch to pure water energy.

The current meta makes Yanmega/Kabutops an amazing deck. Fossils force early consistent Yanmegas and Kabutops gets around Yanmega's energy consumption by only needing 1 energy. Cape gets both of them past that all important 150hp breakpoint. Erika's to counter Darkrai's early damage on Yanmega. Both are natural counters to Darkrai/Magnezone.

That's what I'm using currently, I'm thinking about swapping a single Erika for something since I usually only use one in a game but it's still nice to ensure you get one early as often as possible.

As someone who really likes Lt. Surge+Raichu decks Magenzone slots in PERFECTLY to in a way replace Raichu. Discarding ALL energy, for only 120 damage sucks sometimes. So it's nice magneton getting some love

A fun combo i’ve been running too is the magnezone line with the electivire line. Use Surge with magnetons generated energy if you have electabuzz in the active spot, or attack with magnezone twice and use Volkner to attach the 2 discarded energy to electivire.

Magnezone is my new favorite card, with dawn it’s like a gardevoir for any deck in a pinch (and only stage two needed for this so very reliable), and I can focus all my energy on other cards because it ramps itself.

I did my whole 50 matches with a variant of this deck and had a 63% winrate. It’s really fun and insanely strong. The one consistent struggle I faced was Exeggutor EX. He comes online very quickly and outpaces the deck, especially when combined with Yanmega EX. I imagine those cards are going to see a surge in popularity, as I believe you’ve previously pointed out.

The other thing to point out is how well it pairs with dawn. Getting both mite and ton out on turn one and two allows you to dawn the charged electric energy on that turn to darkrai so it can attack only after two attacked dark energy!

You should always run 1 Giovani because 120 super effective one shots moltres, articuno, yanmega etc.

While it can only attack a limited number of times it is essentially a 1 colorless 110 attack that bins 1 energy. (0 energy if you sit on magneton an extra turn) And it has a type, so you get weakness benefits. It is on par with the fossil stage 2 pokemon, without being a fossil and being colorless. Magneton is crazy.

Magnazone and Scarmory hits really fast. Scarmory is basically a stage 1 that can start hitting on turn 2-3. Power up Magnaton on the bench while metal bird blitzes.

I’ve been playing a magnezone electivire deck, synergizes very well with volkner to hit for 10 more than mag can, and with mythical island’s electabuzz good bench damage too

There’s splash tech cards like Yanmega and Mew, and then there are splash staples like Magnezone. I think with the attack power and HP adjusted even slightly higher (not even much) this could have been an EX. Nobody would have bat an eye. Absolutely love this card. But I do think the fact that it can go in everything means that it’s just better than most other stage 2 line you’re running. Making it a self sufficient and also a 1 prizer and actually good is a design choice EDIT: I think a healthier design if they wanted to keep it largely like this, would have been to make it cost 2 electric and one colorless for the attack. It could still attack on curve self sufficiently, but if you wanted to get a second attack in, then you would need to wait another turn without evolving to get a third electric energy

Because of Dawn I run it alongside Dragonite and manaphy. Draco Meteor is still inconsistent but I don’t have to use dual energy, just water. I had an amazing draw once and was able to get two dragonites powered up by turn 4.

I just made a similar deck before watching this! I run x2 Drudigon and x2 Magnezone x 2 rocky helmet. Run fire/water energy. Attack/ wall with Drudigon with rocky helmet while volt charging on bench. No EX deck gives me more flexibility :)

IMO once again comes down to going first or second. Yanmega can setup faster when going second. I’ve been running dialga and Yanmega which is like this Frankenstein of a deck that I’ve been getting consistently high win rates with. Once I get the cards required for magnezone darkrai I’ll comeback and probably be shown that it’s better.

I tried it for a bit. Magnezone is just better than dragonite. You lose to so many decks and you get two attacks with dragonite most games. But the hp pool of most decks stacks the situation against you. Needing 3 on one pokemon to get the ko even on non ex kills dragonite. Needing 4 on most ex considering cape is everywhere you just suffer from effectively coin flipping games right at the end. But with the lower odds.

@Daxma006 oh, I thought I said cool. Not meta. I run Magnezone in the deck for this contingency. With pokeball and comms evos really aren't as bad as people make them out to be, especially paired with capes and pots. You also do not ever play Dnite unless you wanna rng dopamine it up. Could also run Manaphy instead of Mag and throw in Palkia or smn. Edit: the entire point of my comment was to look at Dawn, too.

@DubbleLime Got ya! I built it for the see what hits it gets because it was fun early on the release. But man, it hits so poorly now I don't get the fun of it at all anymore. Dawn is crazy good though. Not as game breaking as Cyrus. But you absolutely can pivot a game with her. You have to be aware of her in a lot of matchups too.

@Daxma006 I'm running a Luxray Zebstrika deck that I feel works far better than Electivire and it works wonders. I only ever really lose to Darkrai on occasion or a bad brick but Volkner is impressive with the right deck and timing.

I beat 3 Darkrai/Magnezone decks today using Darkrai/Weavile/Spiritomb to damage their magnemites on their bench and then Cyrus them in to kill them. Been fun to watch them concede when the mites go down hah

Im still missing a magnezone so i cannot try for myself, but i think dawn could be a good option instead of druddigon. If you start with darkrai and manage to have magneton with dawn on your second turn of energy, you can hit for 120 damage within your first couple of turns

I think part of the reason it's so cracked is Gen 4's additional evolutions breathing life into a Stage 2 final form. Stage 1 upgrades were never that good to begin with as basics, while Rhyperior is too expensive and slow whereas Rhydon never had a cool ability. Mamoswine, Dusclops, and Togetic didn't have previous forms in Pocket TCG while Kirlia was only helping a Stage 2 ability (Gardevoir). Magnezone benefitted from the intersection of a lot of good things.

People give Magnezone way too much credit and they don't give Magneton enough of it. Magnezone itself is a pretty run of the mill card. What makes it so good is the fact that Magneton allows it to be splashable in any type deck. Magneton is great as a benched battery and does sort of decent damage as a clutch. In A1a I used it with Raichu and Zapdos ex and Lt. Surge when I wanted to break the monotony of boring Pikachu, and Magneton was already a great card.
