@hailyrizzo54282 ай бұрын
You didn't tell the full story. Two underlying reasons why Malaysia didn't fully realize its potential is because of corruption and the racial-centric government policies. You said Malaysia failed to make the leap from low cost manufacturing to high end knowledge based economy. That's because the native Malay race has been given special racial privileges over other races like the Chinese and Indians in education and commerce, at the expense of meritocracy. As a result the nation lost many intelligent and capable citizens to other countries. eg. the inventor of the pendrive was actually a Chinese Malaysian but he studied in Taiwan and has his business based there. Please note that the non-Malay population was significantly large when the country became independent making up nearly half of the population. But because of the racial privileges given to the native Malays, many of them left for other countries especially to Singapore. Many people would know that Singapore was once a state in Malaysia but with a Chinese majority population. It was expelled because of the Malaysian government and Singapore state government did not see eye to eye on the Malay-centric policies pushed by the central government. Today Singapore has left Malaysia far behind economically and is one of the richest countries in the world. Ask yourself why Singapore with little land and no natural resources but with a Chinese majority population (who were technically 'former Malaysians') manage to develop faster and further than Malaysia with so much natural resources but suppressing half it's own non-Malay population. Another factor is the corruption and cronyism taking place in Malaysia. Many of the large conglomerates were given to cronies of the government leaders. They were also virtual monopolies. Their profit model was to provide uncompetitive products and services but use government policies to cut out not just local competition but also foreign competition. As a result, you get tons of fat bloated companies where the management and employees know that they can get away with providing shoddy products and services because of the captive local market. If they can't even compete with foreign companies in their own home market without government assistance, how are they going to compete against foreign companies in overseas markets. Two examples are MAS (the national airline) and Proton (the national car manufacturer)

It has something to do with race, and I'm not racist. Majority of Malaysians belong to the Austronesian race, similar with the Philippines and Indonesia, who are also majority Austronesian. In the Austronesian culture, being extremely rich is not a priority. Being content with a middle class, comfortable lifestyle and a stable job is the main goal of most Austronesians, unlike the Chinese whose goal is to become overnight millionaires and billionaires. Austronesian cultures are also deeply religious in nature, like the deep interference of the Catholic Church on Filipinos and the hold of the Islamic Ulama among Malaysians and Indonesians, which we all know, religiosity hinders economic growth because of religious restrictions and prohibitions. Lastly, Austronesians have an employee mentality, not an entrepreneurial mentality. The goal for Austronesians is to secure a specialized, high paying, stable job that will provide sustenance throughout the rest of their lives. This is in stark contrast with Chinese people who are daredevils and risk takers when it comes to business. Almost every Chinese clan has a backyard business of their own, whether it's an electronic repair shop or a mini cafeteria. Austronesians don't want to gamble their fortune, they are afraid to take huge risks when it comes to establishing businesses. Now you know why Austronesian nations didn't become economic tigers. Because they are content with the little things that they have in life.

When you look at history, it becomes clear why people come up with these stereotypes. The Chinese who came to Malaya weren’t just random people off the streets-they were often urbanized, had entrepreneurial backgrounds, and were heavily favored economically by the British. Malays, on the other hand, typically stayed in villages working on rice farms, but they were given most of the local administrative roles. Indians were brought either as straight-up slave labor under indentured servitude or placed in clerical roles because of their ability to speak English. You can still see these historical patterns reflected in Malaysian society today: the Chinese dominate the country’s economy, Malays hold political power, and Indians face significant wealth inequality.

And their economic activities are not as rigid as Indonesia when the country requires too much investment capital from Apple and they unilaterally block Chinese e-commerce sites in a non-market way. Their human development index is better than Vietnam, when my country's labor productivity is still low and they are not self-sufficient in high-tech industries such as semiconductors, and they are not dependent on another large country like Cambodia, when the country only knows how to rely on neighboring countries to survive. I am Vietnamese, I think Malaysia is a very lucky country due to several reasons: 1) Moderate population: 30+ million is a good number, large enough for domestic companies to develop, enough to take care its own population (Indonesia is very populous to deliver a balanced wealth to all citizens). Population growth is quite impressive to fullfil its economic growth. 2) Rich resource: especially oil, gas within its EEZ. 3) Strategic location: Malacca strait is one of the most important route for international shipping 4) All neigboring countries are rich, safe: Thailand and Singapore are both upper-income countries, Malaysia get much benefit from tourism, trade with these countries 5) Safe from natural disaster: no recent earthquake, storm, volcano eruption. Personally, I like Malaysia, low petrol cost, low living cost, huge English speaking population, multi-ethnic society. Good market for investors.
@looooool31452 ай бұрын
Those multiethnic society didn't come naturally and was forced down onto Malaysia throat by the British. They effectively watered down and almost wiped out the native Malay population with immigrants from India, China and Indonesia. If there was no forced immigration onto Malaysia, her real population would be less than 3-5 million. Because of those force immigrations and zero integrations, the immigrant's population like the Chinese who were born in Malaysia still can't speak the local language despite being born here. So, the real local Malay people have to resort to English to speak with them because they refused to learn the Malay language and that's why Malaysia have a huge English-speaking population. Malaysia is only safe from internal domestic conflict because Malay people are insanely tolerant to the point they would rather giveaway Singapore to the Chinese who just recently immigrated here rather than shedding blood. And the cheap petrol subsidy won't be no more in the upcoming days because the Chinese are now partially in power and they are quickly removing the subsidy because it benefits the people directly.
