My main concern with Smart on this team is his decision making. For years the Celtics have put up with him trying to live out his middle-school fantasies in the clutch, hijacking possessions that should clearly go to Tatum or Brown to try his luck as a star and throwing away winnable games in the process. Boston fans and players put up with that nonsense as "the Marcus Smart experience" but I'm not sure Ja, Bane, and Grizzly fans will be so forgiving
@jmlclarke99 Жыл бұрын
I’m a Celtics fan and his bad decision making was mainly a thing before we got ime. Smart had no identity cause brad played him as a combo guard. Ime brought in Damon stoudamire to help smart and smart blossomed. He turned into a good playmaker. As for the shooting a lot of his “forced” shots were before ime. He shot way more reckless shots. Last season smart would only take actions into his own hands if brown or Tatum were bricking. In the playoffs Smart literally saved us against the sixers when Tatum could make a shot to save his life for 3 games in a row
@MikeTheNBAGuy Жыл бұрын
@jmlclarke99 Smart also sold one of the games against the Sixers, and while I believe he's gotten better I also think that's an improvement from "worst IQ in the league" to "pretty bad shot selection". He's almost certainly going to start at PG while Ja is out and then get moved to the bench, and I don't think that's going to be a good situation for his mentality either
@jmlclarke99 Жыл бұрын
@@MikeTheNBAGuy “worst iq in the league” really? Being a bad shooter doesn’t mean someone has the worst iq in the league. His counterparts and teammates have said the opposite. Coaches literally rave about him every year and say he’s the engine of the Celtics team. And once again brad was the one that tried to turn him into a shooter, ime helped him find his role as a pg. And as for the grizzlies smart will be fine moving to the bench. He’s been playing on the bench and starting his whole career. He’s played behind elite pg’s in the past and has played well off the bench. He’s a team player hence why he was a Celtic for so long
@michaelahurt Жыл бұрын
@@jmlclarke99thank you!!! I swear some people haven't actually watched Marcus the last two years. Yes he's not afraid to take open shots with the game on the line but people act like he's looking off Tatum in the corner to shoot a contested fadeaway like he's Kobe.

Smart isnt a great shooter, but he demands fewer shots per game than Brooks, freeing up shots for better shooters. Smart is a better defender, but cant defend the same bigs as the talller Brooks. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I hate Marcus Smart for a reason. He is the very best role player in the league. And now that he’s no longer in Boston I can say that plainly with pride. He’s playing in the biggest moments with some of the best players in the league and ever since the finals against the warriors he got even better. Went from defensive player of the year, kinda noisy but tends to be right to leader of the team on the Celtics, and game even the guy who you want taking that shot…. He just took THAT shot more than too many times . Imagine him jimmy butler , and jrue holiday on the heat? Champs , the underdog squad, the b team , the biggest losers, and they would dominate

Only problem is you can’t start all three in the playoffs they are just too small, match up hunting is the main game in the playoffs. Teams have gotten good at hiding there undersize guard but having three 6’4 or less players on the court in the playoffs asking for a second round exit.
@ac-mm3rj Жыл бұрын
he just explained why that's not a problem for smart on defense at all. in fact, he struggles more against quick PGs
@michaelahurt Жыл бұрын
Sure you can. They are gonna hunt Ja regardless. Marcus is one of the best nail defenders and communicators in the NBA. If teams are hunting, he is one the 10 guys you want behind the play organizing and sniffing out threats Plus he's a skeleton key. He can guard one through five. Yes, you would prefer to have more length (think Dray and Wiggins instead of Smart and Bane) but you do still have JJJ. And his job will be much easier with Marcus because less stuff will get through.
@Anselm243 Жыл бұрын
@@ac-mm3rj @michaelahurt it doesnt matter he's 6'3, Smart may be able to get a few stops and hold his own. But when it comes to Jokic, Embiid, AD, ect having three guys on the court 6'3 making it easy for the other team
@Anselm243 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelahurt Aaron Grodon bullied the Heats wings and gaurds because they were all under 6'6, even Jimmy in game 2. Jokic Bullies anyone under 6'9. When it comes to the playoffs they will be too small. I personally wouldn't play three guards under 6'4. especially with the new wave of skilled big wings
@michaelahurt Жыл бұрын
@@Anselm243 Didn't GS just win a title playing lineups like Steph, Klay, Wiggins, Porter, Draymond? I'm not saying it's ideal -- I'm actually a big proponent of collective length on defense -- but Jaren changes the geometry of the court so they will always feel bigger than they are. When they play Denver they'll use Adams as the fifth guy so JJJ can play middle field. Even Jokic won't have a great time with JJJ lurking, let alone AG. Having three guards is way less of a problem than having Ja. But like I said, everyone is just gonna hunt Ja anyway so outside of Draymond, I'm not sure there's anyone you'd rather have as an organizer than Smart. He'll make sure they don't get put in bad situations in the first place. 80% of good defense is staying out of rotation and avoiding bad matchups. That is what Marcus does. And he's also able to identify threats and ameliorate them before they can cause an issue. And as noted in the video Smart is one of the best post defenders in the NBA. 6'3" or not. There's more than one way to skin a cat. Focus on the outcomes. Just because most QB's are 6'4" doesn't mean Drew Brees can't succeed. It's nice to have guidelines and rules of thumb but think more broadly about what is happening and whether the thing that is a problem is actually a problem in that context You need size and length for rim protection and to bother shooters, right? But if Jackson and Smart are already doing that ... Marcus at 6'3" is still better at doing those things than, idk, Bol Bol at 7'2". If he plays like he's 6'8" that's all that matters
