@@bangerbangerbro SGI Workstations have no Atari-like game port that would accept the Megadrive controller. They also have no PC 15 pin joystick port. The 9 pin serial port is driven by a UART and a MAX232, so plugging a Megadrive pad into it, while it would fit, would do absolutely no good. I propose the hypothesis that they used a Saturn controller purely because it has a button layout that lends itself to experimentation, because it has extra face buttons, chopped off the connector, wired it to the printer port, and bit banged the protocol or rewired it for a simpler one.

after having played SM64 and going back to Sm64 DS, I feel that the D-pad control is sort of limiting, the only thing I really want for SM64 DS is to get a remaster so we can get actual 3d analog movement, it's already possible in the game through an android emulator and button mapping software for android, the problem is, I haven't found a solution that works like it does on Android.

@@zacharycardon2353 so? You got it wrong! Goddard indeed gave reason to use Sega controllers: Sega controllers (both Mega Drive and Master System) use serial port connectors, so they could just plug them in with no modification. Of couse, they would have to create their own custom driver to transform the corresponding electric signals into the right commands, but that's way simpler and easy to replicate than modifying every controller they wanted to use. Nonetheless Sega even contributed to Marion 64 in another way... kind of: The famous camera system that they implemented in Mario 64 was found to be patented by Sega time earlier. Nintendo decided to go with it and deal with the legal issues later but Sega never exetuted their patent rights
