This doesn't really prove they're enemies, just that they're opposites. You can be friends with people unlike you, you know? I for one would like a Mario and Sonic crossover platformer in the style of Sonic Generations where you have a Mario version and a Sonic version of each stage. Mario never talks. Sonic makes jokes whenever he feels like it. Mario follows the rules. Sonic defies the rules. Mario is confined to only being in the Mario universe. Sonic would have no problem walking on set in a Batman cartoon and keeping his original appearance. Mario is praised, but at the end of the day he's still just Mario Sonic is ridiculed, but at the end of the day he laughs it off.

The character shape thing makes me think of Sans and Papyrus from Undertale. Their fonts, bodies, personalities, and attacks are very polar and compatible. Also the Inside Out emotions. They were created around their shapes.

The colors of Mario and Sonic are also at ends with each other, red vs. blue being the default status for a generic rivalry. And I don't want to read too far into this, but so far as politics in America go, red is worn by the Rebulcans. Currently viewed as the conservative and older party, while Democrats are associated with blue and being more progressive. Mario being red and the classic video game character and Sonic being blue and being marketed and designed as the newer/teen alternative could have been planned, or it might just be a lucky coincidence.

Given Sonic's redesign involves rounding his image, I would say that Mario has the better design. Whilst Mario has constantly had his costume updated through the use of new power-ups, they have continued to keep the core ideology of Mario as a rounded, lovable figure.

It fascinated me ever since I joined KZbin how it seems to have preserved particular elements of popular culture. I am 20 years old and therefore the first consoles I had were a PS2 and an original Xbox, so I never did get why people still felt so strongly for consoles, characters and companies that don't even exist anymore. Heck, even Nintendo is nothing but a shadow of it's former self, still there, still relevant, but going away slowly, becoming a little bit less popular and selling worse day by day. And yet, there is such a disconnect between those who lived while them and Sega were still around and kicking and the current demographic target of most videogames. It is an unique circumstance where there was never a natural progression of the media user base, with the veterans still around, mocking the new crowds for not enjoying the classics, even when they have been objectively surpassed long ago, and openly disregarding the current console divide for not being as relevant to them as the one they lived in they're youth. I, like many others (a growing majority for that matter) will never play golden eye, sonic, even Mario or Zelda, that is simply a fact, and it is quite upsetting to see so many people refusing to accept this or claiming that you are not a true gamer unless you have played through Half life twenty times backwards with every mod, finished doom without ever being hit and hold Ocarina of time as the best game ever made instead of appreciating what we have now and the audience it is directed to. I love this channel, but even you have been heavily biased by nostalgia here and there (you lovable old man) and while it is quite insightful, giving us perspective our generation might never get otherwise, perhaps a balance with the new ways could improve the dialogue in the community. Imagine that, both sides of this generational gap playing together, respecting each other's opinions. Wouldn't that be swell?

I always thought that the little creature from Journey was designed to take away all worries and let the player engage in total escapism. His feet are pikes that dig in and out of sand easily. If he had shoes, for example, while getting lost in the world you'd be thinking about the crunch of sand in your shoes and untied laces and so on, which would take away from the serenity of the game. Also, his weird cloth cape/poncho thing made him look as floaty, breezy and gentle as he was. Then his scarf was brilliantly encorporated into the game play; it was floaty and had the mysterious glyphs that gave atmosphere and culture to the world, but also its length depended on the player. On my first play through I looked in every cranny of the world to find glyphs and lengthen my scarf, but when I was struck by one of those flying Onyx-esque things I was sincerely devastated when my scarf was halved in length.

I found an instance where it is not really character design per se, but at least a thing very connected to it. I think that the flowing lines of flowers that appear behind you as Amaterasu from Okami really help to set the mood for the more flowing form of combat compared to the more focused and structured combat of for example The Legend of Zelda games.

I can't choose between mario and sonic. There is both of them in me, I love playing mario aand I loove playing sonic. Sonic is fast and Mario is slow so depending on how I am feeling if I am happy and at least calm I can play mario but if what I am feeling is rush and big emotions I would rather play sonic! to me they are not enemies and never were.

I've been a long time Nintendo fanboy, but a while back tried to play Sonic (Genesis collection on PS3) but I just didn't like the feel of the gameplay. Still prefer SMB.

+Fat Panda Ditto. If I wanted to play a game where I had almost no control over my own character, I'd just put the controller down and tune back into real life. Sonic game's a fun concept but ultimately too frustrating. I play Mario for a more enjoyable challenge (newer games) or to relax with easy, familiar gameplay (old).

Sonic, I think, was a reaction to Mario. Kids who were 7 or 8 when Mario was on the NES were a couple years older when Sonic came out, and his "attitude" was a deliberate marketing move to make Mario 3 look babyish by comparison. The conflict between the characters is one of pre-pubescent v. mid-pubescent, which is actually kind of timeless.

The design of several Pokemon tend to influence gameplay by what role they may play on your team. Pokemon like Charizard and Gengar, whom have a lot of spikes and points in their design often play the part of attakers or sweepers while rounder Pokemon like Blissey and Whimsicott play more of the role of Tanks or Supporters.

hmm, even when there are clear differences, I don't see them like polar opposites; for example, both characters have a lot of blue, polar oposites should be opposite in the chromatic cone(for example, blue and orange). Even Sonic is not that spiky, for example, he have very round eyes, lots of things of his design was taken from characters very round, like Felix the Cat or Mickey Mouse. I think people see them like rivals just because when Sonic was more popular, their rivality was a very strong advertisement.

Its not just character designs. and movements. Sonics levels were partially formed over discontent on the linearity of Mario levels. Sonic Team wanted to encourage repeated play with multiple paths to learn and reward those could stay on higher paths with a decrease in the length of a levels playtime from a skilled run that way, you can get back to the more difficult levels quickly at a time that lacked game saves. Its a concept that is a response to mario.

I think you need to look at the creation of each character. Mario was created to be part of a cast, changing roles in each game. His look is due to technical limitations which gave us his hat, mustache, sideburns and overalls, and consequently brings a lot of easy identifiers. sonic was designed as a product of the 90's, with Michael Jackson's shoes and Bill Clinton's attitude. Sonic screams zeitgeist, Mario's personality is secondary.

It's hard to try and come up with logical in-game explanations for what was a marketing ploy to try and sell consoles and games. Sure, it was effective, but the rivalry is a manufactured construct put on the games, not an intrinsic quality of the games themselves. Because of that, I believe Mario and Sonic don't care one way or another about each other, because in-game interactions are only found in crossover games like those Olympic Games or Smash Bros, and there the "rivalry" is a friendly competition, not something that would draw battle lines and legit anger/hatred/whatever. In short, WE believe they are enemies, but THEY may not, as far as we know. Just like wrestling XD

Simon Belmont. The guy looks like a Conan-esque muscleman and his design appears to have been lifted from a Frank Frazetta artwork. In Castlevania 1 he walks with a bodybuilder's swagger, and everything about him feels ponderous, especially dat whip delay. It is an interesting dynamic in which such a physical character is confronted with magical demon creatures and must overcome them with naught but a handful of enchanted weapons, adding to the game's sense of peril: here you are, alone, with creatures of power beyond your meager human capability.

Dude.... in the begging.... there was Pac Man. Jeez man 0:18 seconds in and you're already demonstrably wrong. Pac Man was HUGE in the early 80's. A whole generation before Mario. Why was the rivalry between Mario and Sonic so intense. Because the companies behind them fostered it. They had a vested interest in people picking a side and sticking with it. Also, you've already argued in a previous video that the design of mario was largely influenced by the limitations of the system he was the mascot of. You are wrong about the mechanics of the Sonic games. The *advertising* emphasized Sonic's speed but in the actual games you only went full tilt once or twice in each Zone. It was like icing on the cake, the rest of the time you were going at a steady pace. Because trying to run through every level would get you smacked against spikes and the like. I think that's one of the biggest problems with the Sonic franchise, the nostalgia for a marketing campaign has run away from what actually made the games fun.
