SO! I have a lot to say about this video that I want anyone who has watched it to know. This video holds opinions that I still hold today, but of course I agree that I didn't convey my points well at all. A year and a half ago I was much less proficient in debating points. The main thing I want you all to know is that this video was intended for an audience of 100, with my (at the time) 1,000 subscribers. Not...400,000? Comments on the quality of this video are well-founded and justified, but you guys need to keep in mind that this video was not intended as a professional video. My quality has upped since mid 2017, however, and you guys should check out my recent content to see what I actually intend to make for bigger audiences. Live Plays, Livestream Archives and Life of Screens (Jeez, I see a trend in these names) are all worth your time! (And YES, my mic is different now from back in mid 2017 XD)

I have played both games extensively and I feel like you should too before jumping to conclusions. I know antigravity in Mario kart 8 doesn't change the gameplay a lot, but it allows for fantastic course design. Tracks that use it well such as Electrodrome or the F Zero Tracks (Mute City and Big Blue) are easily some of the best courses in Mario Kart history.

I think the TC would be good if it wasn't the only "negative" item. I like the idea of a previous comment I saw that suggested more "negative" items should be added. That way, picking up an item box is seen as a risk and not a necessity. That way instead of being like, "Oh shoot, I missed the box, I'm doomed," it's, "Do I get a box and possibly end up with a Poison Mushroom (idk what it would do, but it would be something negative), or do I play it safe and miss out on a possible star?" Another layer of strategy added to the game.

What do you mean?! The Thundercloud was an awesome addition! It momentarily creates a hectic game of hot potato between the racers that now gives you the priority of hitting someone else, rather than just go faster. Sometimes it's actually better to slow down and rejoin the pack to increase your chances of passing it on, and even if you dislike being shocked, you can't deny the cloud ups the stakes 10-fold WHILE offering a speed boost. I think it was an amazing power-up that forces you to strategize, like the Blue Shell and POW Block do. Fire flowers, Tanooki tails, and "Crazy Eights" require no strategy whatsoever. Don't even get me started on the abomination that is the Super Horn! People who dislike the Thundercloud are the same people who complain about items in Smash. They are trying to play the game unlike how it was intended. They don't get the gist. Mario Kart is not supposed to be completely fair! It's supposed to be random, crazy, wild, and hectic! This was established since the very first entry. Wii's more prolific use of items makes the game more fun, challenging, and true to the series's nature if you ask me.

@@Jdudec367 Nah, man! It's the blue shell & thundercloud that upset the status quo. Their purpose is to catch the player off-guard, forcing them to strategize at a moment's notice. This is Mario Kart! At no point should the player be comfortable with their position! If you want to be the best, you have to learn how to take an unexpected hit, stay focused, and work your way back up the pack. I despise the super horn with all my heart. It destroys this entire notion. It pampers those afraid of change and forces players at the top into stagnation and boredom. MKWii had plenty of overpowered, god-like items, so it makes sense that the game implemented a few of the opposite to spice things up. Sometimes the items were your best friend and saving grace, and other times they were a complete jackass and your worst nightmare. That's how a good roster should be! I appreciate the guts MKWii had to liven up the gameplay of this series. MK8 plays it WAY too safe with lazy crazy eights and coins for no apparent reason. You wanna rethink that idea of yours?

Part of the reason that Mario kart wii was so good and still has an impressive player base to this day is because that game is so broken. There are so many glitches, exploits, tricks, and mistakes that just enhance the game, stuff that you would never see in a game made in 2020 (or 2017) and will probably never see again. Chris Sherman 1. Mario Kart 8 was made in 2014. We really just erased the original from our collective conscience, huh? 2. This argument has always been dumb to me. Yeah, the glitches are fun, but it’s basically saying “the game is worse, therefore it’s better” and MK8 is “better and more polished, therefore it’s worse.” Judge Wii based on what was intended- there’s plenty there. Also, while primitive, MK8 has gotten custom tracks and they’re likely to continue and get better. DS and 7 also have custom tracks- CTGP-7 specifically honestly rivals CTGP-R in terms of quality.

Personally, I've always looked at Double Dash as the Melee of mario Kart. A defining feature of melee is its INCREDIBLE consistency, and Double Dash is by far the most consistent game in the series where you are less likely to get screwed with a barrage of items, which in combination with red shell dodging, blue shell dodging (both of which can be done with a mini turbo ) and the game having the lowest item hitstun makes front running much easier, and safer.

Fathiyyah McGill Funky Kong was a “special character.” In every Mario Kart, there is one character or two that are in that one Mario kart game but will not appear again in the next game. For an example, R.O.B. That was a DS special character therefore it did not appear in the other Mario karts. Though some characters in previous Mario karts are really good, they had to pick what they wanted for that game.

Are you implying that "Spiny Shell" is the commonly used name? Because I pretty much only ever hear people call it the "Blue Shell". I personally call it the "Spiny Shell" because: 1. "Spiny Shell" is the official name. It's been referred to as the "Spiny Shell" by official text ever since it's first appearance back in Mario Kart 64 2. It has spines that the other shells don't. You argue that it should be called "Blue Shell" because the other shells are defined by their colour and not their defining features. The thing is, the Red Shells and Green Shells don't really have any defining features besides their colour, whereas the Spiny Shell has it's spines. You said it yourself: "The defining factor of the blue shell is it's spines" At the end of the day though, it doesn't really matter which name you call it, both work just as well.

oscar Vee I always though they wanted to do three different styles of Rainbow Roads for this game like in MK7 where one was more of a journey to the solar system and the other one the actual Rainbow Road. Here it was a satellite casting rainbow reflections from its panels, aka a more technologically heavy theme for it, and the N64 one the more magical style everyone is used to, even with GCN Mushroom City below like Double Dash’s Rainbow Road, as well as the SNES Rainbow Road as a very neon flashy style to set it apart from the other two. For the next Mario Kart they can now bring back the MK8 Rainbow Road and the new one be like the classic magical one many people want. And bring back the SNES Rainbow Road too because they reeeeally love that one a lot. Or maybe go for another experiment like making the Rainbow Road this time taking place in a beanstalk covered in clouds a la Sky Garden, or maybe something more themed around Super Mario Galaxy unlike Wii Rainbow Road that only nods the Star Bits and the Star Rings but the rest is all original.

Just a note, in defense of Blue Shells hitting people, the reason it does so is that it actually HELPS the user. I think a lot of us can relate to "Okay I'm in a low spot I just need a decent item" and you get the blue shell that does practically nothing for you. In the newest games it actually feels good to get the item in a low spot because you know it'll probably help you.

This guy really just tried to tell me the tc was an awesome. Mario Kart Wii is the better game, but your reasoning is wrong. Biggest thing you missed was the item system. In wii you have a specific set of items you can get depending on the position you're in with a set % chance of getting it. In 8 the item system is based on how far away first place is, which on paper sounds good but it also makes it where someone in 2nd place can get a star while the guy in 8th could get stuck with a single green shell or banana. It's far too inconsistent for something that didn't need to be fixed. Also while I agree Lakitu is way too much of a babysitter in 8 the argument that the system was better in wii because you could do gamebreaking shortcuts and skip across half the map isn't good. It created a huge gap in skill levels (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) and destroyed the way some tracks, specifically grumble volcano, ended being played online.

some of the points i think he made are kind of flawed and unreasonable too, like when he brought up the thing about "shortcuts" and not having enough """freedom""" in mario kart 8 majority of the shortcuts in mario kart wii's tracks were unintentional cause if you think about it, competitive players or speedrunners would take advantage of this and go incredibly out of bounds, not to mention ultra shortcuts were just skipping through half of the track (like you pointed out) but part of the reason why they were so "dumbed down" in mario kart 8, was because it wasnt a matter of taking freedom away from the player but a matter of fairness for the more casual player which makes sense part of his argument i think rolls down to "i dislike 8 because it's not mario kart wii" i personally enjoy mkwii like the next guy, but there's certain aspects of the game that take it away from being balanced

I grew up with Mario Kart Wii and later played 8 as a teenager and I can say Mario Kart Wii is pretty easy, I’m able to beat all the cups in every CC and get 1st in every race. MKwii has the illusion of being difficult because of what you said, it’s broken and unbalanced. I still find it better in terms of cool shortcuts and a much more involved time trials scene but that doesn’t necessarily mean MK8 is worse. They’re just games, and people have to get their panties in a twist about it because one game changes things up and creates a different play style than another.

Indeed. If you say that "modding" is a merit of a game, then that is fine. You know, as long as the game developers actually intended modding to be a thing. You cannot claim modding to be a merrit of the game if the developers didn't intend it to be (at least not for this kind of review). Nor can you list any specific mods or types of mods as a merit of the game, past the fact that the game's built-in modding compatibility merely ALLOWS for those mods (and AGAIN, only if the developers purposely supported modding).

I think it should be considered a half point sorta. While yes it's not a merit of the game, it is a merit of playing the game. If you're bored of everything in MKWii, you have the modded tracks to play for some new stuff, whereas in MK8 when you finish the game, you finished the game. In a few years MK8 will also have this half merit, possibly, it just needs time. If this point was brought up at all, it shouldn't be as defended as much, and perhaps brought up after concluding why MKWii is better. It's something extra, not part of the base game itself.

Ok, here are my problems with the blue shell in mario kart wii. 1) Mario kart wiis item ballancing makes the blue shell appear far too frequently. I have had races with 2 blue shells per lap on grand prixs where I was trying to unlock characters. It also is very likely to be thrown on the last lap, which means if you are in first trying to unlock characters, you can unfairly loose your lead and, this being the last lap, not be able to catch up. In multiplayer, this is fun, but in single player, this is just annoying. 2) In mario kart wii, you can get the blye shell in the lower places. Back there, you are hoping to get an item that could allow you to catch up to the people in front of you. The spiny shell doesnt help you get to a higher place, it just hits the person who is probably over 5 places ahead of you. This doesnt bennifit you in any way, it just pisses the aspirations of the person in first. The only other games with the blue shell that do this are double dash, ds, and 7 I believe. In any other game that this appears in, it accually can help you get ahead which makes this item feel useful. 3) the spinout time in mario kart wii for the blue shell was extremely long, meaning that many people have the opportunity to pass you. It also destroys the item that you have leaving you vulnurable. This still happens in mario kart 8, but you have many frames after you get hit where you cant spin out from an item. In mario kart wii, you can get hit by a red shell imediately after the blue shell hits which causes an even longer spin out time. You see? In mario kart 8, they made the blue shell a better item especially in single player. Sure the blue shell can be destroyed by the super horn, but that in its own way is strategic. If you have an incoming red shell, you have to make up your mind weather to use the super horn on that, or wait for a blue shell and take the hit. And plus, the boo item can steal the superhorn easily. These 2 things make it more difficult to destroy the blue shell than the video claims. And oh, did I mention that it is rare to accually get the super horn in 1st? This is why i feel that the blue shell is better in Mario kart 8 than Wii

Mariokart Wii would be better without Thunder Clouds. The blue shell in mk8 hits racers on it way to actually help the racer who throws it. Chances are if you pull a blue shell, you’re not going to catch first place anyways which made it totally useless. Now it actually benefits the person who pulls it.

I would argue that you're thinking about it the wrong way. The blue shell doesn't target the person in first place just for the sake of targeting the person in first place. Rather, it is meant to stop any one person from front-running the course, and pulling away with the lead. It's not an uncommon occurance for first place to get a decently-sized lead on second place, and there might not be much for second place to pull to come back. Rather, by targeting first place and taking them down a notch, it reduces the overall length from first place to last place, and forces players to moving in a pack, fighting with eachother. That is why the blue shell targets first place. It was never meant to directly 'help' the racer who pulled it, just as the blooper doesn't (although I would argue that the blooper is a terrible item, but I digress).

I completely agree with your opinion that Mario Kart Wii is the superior game. However, I think the Thunder Cloud is an addition that was indefensible. The idea of creating chaos is in a pack is interesting, but in a laggy online environment without consistent bumping, it doesn't work. And if you're not in a pack, the item is such an inhibiting factor to your chances that it is not always the best choice to go for an item in 4th-5th place. The Thunder Cloud breaks the spirit of Mario Kart. It is one of the only things I criticize about the game.

I actually like how the blue shell can hit other racers on its way to first. In Wii, you pull the blue shell in 5th-9th place and it goes right to first, not benefiting whoever threw it. In MK8, it at least benefits whoever pulled it as it can hit racers in front of them as well That’s the only thing I prefer about MK8

After drifting, you'd often find yourself gliding about 2-3 kart widths after simply releasing a mini-turbo. This is what made Inside-drift so overpowered. It never had that problem. 3:13. And a good chunk of Big Blue, as well. Seriously. I TT'ed that course for a while, and there are a bunch of turns that I find myself going off the track on purpose to do that with. Especially so on 200cc. 4:21. Well MK8DX has King Boo, Bowser Jr., and Inklings. And don't act like Funky Kong and Baby Daisy aren't basically clone characters. 4:47. I'd say it's more like a shock than a Plant. 4:51. KILL IT! *KILL IT WITH FIRE!* 5:01. This is cooler in MK7 tbh. I honestly love the long period of everyone stopping/reversing just to avoid getting blued. This isn't really a thing in MK8, because by the time you see it, it's too late (well, maybe it is in MK8U, idk) 5:35. No what happens with a Thunder Cloud is that you pull it and you can't pass it because either no one is anywhere to be seen, or whenever you pass it, it goes back to you because of lag. Also the speed boost it gives you is negligible because most people will be going about that fast around you, anyway. Also, the fact that you get shrunk if you lose this wannabe game of hot potato is just AWFUL. 6:00. The Lucky 7 / Crazy 8 actually has quite a bit of strategy to it. While spamming can be effective, spacing out your throws to get the most out of each item is typically a much better idea. 6:51. As much as I hate this, too, I like why it's a feature. Blue Shells are normally obtained in middle-bottom spots, but they only help those in 2nd or 3rd in MKWii. When this was introduced in MK7, it went from basically an explosive NUTT button to a somewhat useful item. Now there's strategy with the Blue Shell, not only for the people in front, but also for it's user. Instead of just spamming it, you may find yourself trying to throw a Blue Shell in such a way that it can hit other people ON PURPOSE! And about your "chance time" reference, I'd say that every single item set is essentially Chance Time, seeing as just about anything can happen as a result of that item set. 7:14. How exactly is this feature NOT a gimmick that can take the gold from someone regardless of how well they race? 7:34. You do know Super Horn are the rarest items in MK8 right? You're more likely to smuggle a shroom into first and use THAT to dodge a Blue Shell. 8:02. I'm not saying that, and the scenario you're giving is SO hypothetical. 9:10. That's LITERALLY only the case because of how much older MKWii is than MK8. People are barely creating CT's for that game, now. I'm not bashing CTGP-R because of this. In fact, I love that MKWii has had so much time to develop into what it's become. But you can't judge MK8 MERELY based on its youth. Hopefully I don't seem like I hate MKWii. I don't (well, not completely). But they both have a lot going for them. I say just try to enjoy them for what they try to be. If you can't, then oh well.

I think that you still have to consider those things (especially on 200cc), but for me the problem is that there are too many choices that are statistically the same. I'd much rather have far fewer pieces to choose from, and just have them more statistically well defined and not redundant. I also feel like customizing gliders feels pretty unnecessary, and that stats for customization shouldn't be something you have to press a button to pull up. While it doesn't personally impact my gameplay experience, I've noticed that for far more casual players the customization menu feels confusing and intimidating, which leads them to experiment less since the menu just leaves them overwhelmed. A few different vehicles to choose from, with them being locked to weight classes in MKWii made it much more approachable for family and friends that were new to it, and made sure that differences in stats were more well defined. So I'd personally like a system more like MKWii, except maybe leaving some very simple wheel options in (possibly having them define whether something is inside or outside drifting, or something more simple like that that focuses more on mechanics than stats).

Also, in MKWii, you needed actual skill to use red shells, as they were stupid and it might hit a wall and be destroyed. However in MK8, there is no skill required, and was pretty much guaranteed to at least to reach the item the racer was holding behind them. Edit: For more clarification, I think MKWii is better in this regard because you don't get screwed over as much by 2nd place getting a red if you don't have a good item, which can be really annoying.
