Good morning! It's snowing outside and last week was lovely. Ah spring is here. This really touches a nerve with the human penal system. Humans are the worst and what we do to each other is shocking. Prisons do nothing but generate more criminals. Early prevention in childhood and home life that is toxic. I am convinced that as a society we can start earlier and prevent this instead of closing the barn door after they all get out. Humans put out fires instead of stopping them.

I don't think his lawyers did their jobs properly at all. I've no clue about Australian law, especially back then, but having no lawyer present for hours of grilling seems like it should count for something. And to have the verdict read out incorrectly?? What a crushing blow!! He should have gotten a million dollars for mental anguish for that one faux pas alone poor bugger. Not only should he have received better compensation, but police, investigators, prosecutors and lawyers should have gone to jail!! Imagine if he'd been put to death!!! This is just so tragic. Wow! I've recommended this case to CR in the past. No idea if I had any influence, but I'm so glad that it is now being covered. Often with serial killers like Edgar Allan Cooke, the police concentrate on the victim's close friends and relatives. At the time, the police were not willing to accept that a serial killer was on the loose. This simply did not happen in sleepy, innocent Perth, Western Australia. The boyfriend was the obvious suspect, so they ran with that. Well ... even in the unlikely event he was guilty, the police and judicial system ignored Cooke's confession that he didn't kill her.
@TheCrimeReel3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pangorban1, funny enough I had you down as recomending the Cooke - that was June 2020 - and when I edited it, I recorded that you may have requested it , and basically it didnt sound right the way I was saying it so I cut it out. So thanks for remembering , here was your comment "It's not unusual for an innocent person to be arrested and convicted for one of the crimes of a serial killer, because the police assume that someone close to the victim is the most likely suspect. There was a case in Western Australia of two men who were convicted of crimes later confessed to by serial killer, Eric Edgar Cooke, who conducted a murder crime spree in Perth from 1957 to 1963. Even so, despite Cooke's confession on arrest, one of the innocent men (Darryl Beamish, a deaf mute) served 15 years and the other (John Button) 6 years. Button was released due to public outcry. On his release, Button strongly campaigned for Beamish's innocence. Both men were finally pardoned." Thanks for recomending and sorry I didnt mention you but the way I worded it wasnt right Cheers, it was a very interesting case to cover

The amount of John's "award" added insult to injury. He should've gotten at last twice that. Maybe 4-6 times.

Great story! I'm glad John finally got his name cleared. I'm well aware of what it is like to wrongly convict people as it happens to my people all the time deliberately! John should have been given much more for an award settlement!

What an absolutely tragic story. The award of $460,000 (AU) could never be enough for a man who suffered so much in life.

Such a sad story. One bad decision and so many people suffered. As for the settlement: there is no fair compensation for all the losses suffered.

Yeah... the amount dished out in compo I think is pretty laughable... Sizable amount, yes. But considering the length of time and the torment experienced, I think its worthy of more.

Hi Jackalope!🐇🦌 Yes, I'm late, the sky must be falling.😂 A laughable amount. I wonder if anyone falsely convicted has ever considered filing a civil suit against the prosecutor when it has been discovered that they deliberately ignored evidence of innocence? That might actually go a long way to making them more accountable to seeking truth over convictions. 🤔

So those poilice basically forced him to have confess and even hit him during the interrogation. Then another guy confessed and still they refused to over turn the verdict? Poor John but at least he did some good by helping others whom have been wrongly convicted.

I used to think suspects that claimed coerced confessions were just criminals trying to avoid responsibility until I was accused of theft by loss prevention at my assistant manager job at a Toy Store back in the mid 90’s. I was 27 and this loss prevention guy played on my fears by insinuating prison and told me they had cameras in the stores showing me stealing.(a lie my former boss later told me they used to try to con me. There were actually no cameras) They told me they saw me stealing money which was totally untrue but after badgering me endlessly and playing on my fears I got to where I wanted to tell them I did something, anything to make the pressure stop. I finally told them that there were times on my break I would get a candy bar during my break (something all the managers did) instead of going to get something to eat and maybe once or twice I forgot to pay for the candy bar later. About 40 cents. The guy asked me to sign a paper stating this implying that it was nothing serious and just a formality to show my honesty and that they really didn’t care about a candy bar and like a dummy I signed it. I was informed a week later that I was being terminated for violating the company candy policy. It was 27years ago and it still pisses me off to this day. By the way, that Company eventually went out of business about 15 years ago during the housing bust. I’d be lying if I said I was sorry although I hate to see people lose their jobs. Guess they didn’t sell enough candy bars.

I think he was innocent of intent. Weird that court upheld his guilty conviction after a man confessed to her murder. Nowadays they lawsuit up for false convictions. RIP Rosemary.

The amount awarded to John, the $460K, was peanuts compared to being locked up in a cell for 23 hours a day, and having to do hard labor for all those years. IF John was living here in America, he would've received no less than a few million dollars for his wrongful conviction. Plus, he could also bring a lawsuit against the police department, and the police officers that made him sign that false confession. It seems like the police had tunnel vision, and they wanted to close the case without doing much work. I don't understand why they didn't have the grill of John's car tested for blood, hair and tissue, because IF they had, that would've exonerated John right from the get-go. However, IF John didn't sign the false confession letter, I don't think that Eric Cooke would've confessed to killing Rosemary. Why didn't Eric's wife come forward as soon as she heard that Rosemary had been killed by a vehicle? After all, Eric did confess to her of what he had done, so why didn't she just call the police anonymously, by a payphone, and turn him in? I sincerely wish that there were many laws, here in America, that are changed. I DON'T believe that EVERYONE, whose family member has been shot and killed by police, should be able to sue the city, the police department, etc. The reason why I'm against this is that IF it shows that the person REFUSED to comply with what the police officer says, REFUSED to be arrested without incident, or shot at the police officer, then THEY are at fault. So, why should their family to profit from their child NOT following a police officer's commands? I'm a subscriber to Jericho Green's channel, and he tells it like it is. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. Plus, he does make you laugh. Anyway, Crime Reel, another phenomenal video and narration. I told my husband, and you can let me know if this is a great idea or not, that after I get done with researching a crime, and/or writing a fictional crime story, I'm going to have him time me, as if I'm narrating it, so that the story is about 15 minutes long, but anything above that, needs to be redone or removed. God bless each of you, everyone at Crime Reel, and all of your families. Please take care of yourselves, be kind to one another, help each other, have compassion for each other, and love each other.
