I think people give Megumi too much shit for losing the will to live. Like this literal 15-16 year old was already not the happiest person and then he got his body violated, forced to kill his sister and forced to kill his sensei/father figure with his own body and technique which Sukuna literally said he did on purpose for this exact reason and on top of that was bathed in a bath of evil, like wtf. People seem to forget that Itadori broke too and more than once. He literally let Mahito get a hit in which unfortunately happened to be a black flash and straight up gave up until todo gave him the speech. Megumi has been by himself this whole time unable to do anything, with Sukuna literally scheming on how badly he can destroy his will so that him switching out wouldn't be a problem.

Not only that Megumi had no family throughout his whole life, he lost both his parents, his sister got put in a coma, and when she finally woke up both of them got their bodies stolen and he "killed" her. Megumi would presumably come back by them getting his body back from Sukuna(pretty sure removing Sukuna's soul from it would cause the body to revert to normal). People have already mentioned that his lost shadows would still be part of his Totality, but even beyond that he has had Sukuna in his body using the most ridiculously high level Jujutsu to a point far beyond anything he ever did in Yuji's. If he finds the will to live Megumi will likely skyrocket in overall ability with cursed energy, master RCT, and complete his domain, if not form an open domain.

This could just be an even bigger version of that as Yuji takes Todo's place here. Alternatively this could just be to highlight the difference between Megumi and Yuji and how one's personal resolve can so drastically affect their fate regardless of their supposed potential.

See Megumi has the potential to come back swinging I just don’t think it’s in his nature. He’s a sorcerer due to circumstances and his loyalty and urge to protect who he deems worthy. He chose Gojo over the zenins for his sisters sake and risked everything by saving Yuji because he didn’t want a good person like him to die. He has the exact opposite issue Yuji had in shibuya and unfortunately that makes it harder to counter with a todo tied speech. Yujis resolve and drive to fight curses comes from a self imposed expectation and instinct to save those he can when he can, and when Mahito showed him that he can’t save those who wants to the most bc he isn’t the one who decides who lives and dies and what death they get. This is a war of ideals and instinct where the only path is forward. St first Yuji broke bc he believed his body killing so many and his inability to save close ally’s invalidated the foundation of his resolve. If those around him are put in danger by his existence and he was too weak to save those he could have then what was the point of going on? Why be a sorcerer if it’s all bloody deaths and failure? Yuji resolved his hero complex by understanding that he isn’t a superhero, he’s a sorcerer at war and his route to saving others is through killing the ones that threaten him. Once he accepted the killer who weeps after is no different than the one who smiles he was able to get the focus needed to keep going. Megumi has a similar problem, his goal is protecting others, but unlike Yuji who wants to save the day, Megumi is attached to the idea he isn’t a hero and he saves the lives of the ones he deems worthy and chooses to, not just anyone in danger. He fundamentally believes his judgement on the value of a life has any objective meaning. He’s correct abt sorcerers not being hero’s but he uses that to center his existence around saving the ones he WANTS to. That means that unlike Yuji who had to get over the impersonal urge to save those in danger and tendency to base his worth on his success at that, Megumi made keeping his sister safe the keystone of his identity as a sorcerer. He never chose this life for his own sake, hit potential made him a valuable asset and circumstances made sorcery more secure than being self sufficient at like 10. He sees his value in his ability to use his potential to keep his sister safe and happy. Her dying to his technique by someone better than him at using it invalidates the reason he fights. The fact he is so self sacrificing means he likely doesn’t see his value in his own existence, rather his technique and it’s ability to keep his sis safe. Using maho on himself makes sense when the only reason he thinks he’s anything is that Mahoraga exists to make any L a mutual experience. The circumstances he’s in have left him with no foundation to justify his existence. He needs to find a new resolve and carry those he cares for within himself as Yuji does, and fight on. On his own I don’t think Megumi will do anything but wait to die. I think Yujis experience staring into The abyss and the way the two are used to characterize eachother so often that if anyone can get Megumi to stand up, and take his life back and decide his actions himself its Yuji. I don’t doubt Yuji will reach Megumi again, I just don’t know if Megumi has the will to rebuild his resolve when dying in the rubble of his core goals is much easier, why fight when you have nothing to fight for? Yuji will definitely tell him what he’s got to fight for, and what he owes those who risked everything for his sake, the question is if Megumi will listen. If Yuji can get through to him, then I believe Megumi will come out far stronger. Imo to get back up and have the resolve to keep fighting, he needs to learn a similar lesson Yuji did, but also to recognize something he has yet to. And that is rhat his sister and Gojo may be dead by his hands, they understood he wasn’t in control. He didn’t make the choice to kill them, and had no way of stopping his body while under Sukunas control. It didn’t matter to them that it was megujis face betraying them, or his technique, bc it wasn’t him. They aren’t lost because they are gone, he isn’t responsible for his technique being used by another. He isn’t defined by being able to protect them or make it up to them, or the potential to rank among the strongest ever. If Megumi can internalize that he’s not defined by the strength of his powers or his ability to uphold a self imposed expectation to tie his reason to exist to his sister’s safety and contentment, he will be able to understand that it was always HIM that brought value to his life and his place within it. Yuji didn’t die for him bc Megumi risked his own life; he just wanted to save him. Gojo didn’t cultivate his potential solely bc of his technique, he cultivated it to see what HE could do with the potential TS has. It’s known what can be done with it on paper, the value is in seeing him make it his own. The heavy hitters aren’t risking it all to save him bc they need him to help beat Sukuna they had at least 1 clear and guaranteed win con that they didn’t take bc it would kill Megumi as well. They risked everything in the battle against the strongest ever to save him while he had nothing to offer and nothing to offer it for. If Megumi can accept that his shadows aren’t what define him, nor what happened when he wasn’t in control. It’s what he does when his shadows are all either just inaccessible or dead and his reason to live is broken. If he gave up completely and let the darkness take him, instead of taking Yujis support and avenging his fallen, fighting for something beyond obligation. for his own sake he’d be making a choice just as much a betrayal as his body killing there’s. He had no control when his body commited those murders, it’s not his fault their bodies died, he Carrys there will and love for him so giving up is disregarding the love they had for him, and letting their shared memory die means he lets their pain and sacrifice for his sake be for nothing. If he did that, he’d be a coward and killer, bc before he had no input. Now he can make the choice to try, not doing so would mean he cares more about taking the easy route out of his suffering more than honoring his loved ones who can no longer suffer or feel joy, for his sake. Imo Megumi will either give up and submerge in the shadows of his dying light, accepting the dying of the light , and be nothing more than a glorified user of shadow puppets. Or he can rage against it, and emerge from shadows deeper than black ready to master them to get back for his dead homies and define his own life and value. He will only live if he can see that it was always him that made him worth saving

Honestly megumi might return to fight the merger at his strongest with nobara if she returned and we could see megumi use flames and use the shadows like sukuna and use them as other techniques and he might be the geto to yujis gojo he’ll be weaker but still special grade so the new gen special grades are megumi yuji yuta hakari maki and maybe tsumiki I don’t remember if she lived or not

He knows he's not strong enough to protect people in his current form but... if only he had enough power... MeGOATmi has been biding his time learning all he could from the greatest sorcerer in his battles. Megumi got hit with limitless which is the knowledge of the universe multiple times. It takes time to heal... well between limitless and Sukuna inhabiting his body Megumi can heal and rewire his brain and have enough energy to use the Chimera garden perfected and 10 shadows to become the beast needed to not only beat Sukuna with yuji and 6 eyes Yuta. I think he will go through with the merger and assume responsibility by fusing with it or bringing it into a physical form to end the cycle of Tengens. The people that are mad at Megumi for giving up and not being willing to jump back in at the first sight of a friend have either never personally been through a series of horrible events or are just unwilling to see how that would make almost no sense. Sukuna killed his father figure and sister in his body, even using Megumi’s technique to do so; how COULDN’T he think there is no hope? Lots of people like to play literacy expert and lambast Gege for “plot contrivances” but want Megumi to “pick himself up by his bootstraps” and excuse away his level of depression and self-hate. His entire narrative focus has been centered around heroic self-sacrifice and getting strong so him and his sister could live in peace and he wasn’t strong enough to stop Sukuna from doing it with his own hands.

Gojo might not be dead as well. Latest chapter said that Gojo developed a new circuit for RCT. After his “death”, Kenjaku said that if you want to kill a RCT user you have to cut their neck (as RCT comes from the brain), Gojo was cut on half under his torso. And the whole airport scene of going North or South. Literally giving options of staying the same or becoming someone new. Gege drew 7 flowers in that chapter and those flowers represents reincarnation. We also know Gojo and the six-eyes are represented as Buddha, reincarnation. So I’m not 100% sold yet he is totally gone.

I think the fact that Megumi doesnt want to live is precisely why he will. Sorcerers are basically guaranteed to die with some kind of regret right? Thats a pretty well established idea by now. Its meant to add a layer of tragedy. For Megumi, having to live would be the tragic outcome since he stated he has nothing to love for. I think Megumi wont come back, which is sad because hes one of those characters that had everything to make huge development. But I think he simply got done dirty by Gege himself. Like, didn't Gege said in an interview that his plan for post-shibuya arc was that Yuji dies and Megumi takes his role as a protagonist or something like that? He probably changed his mind and decided to let Yuji live at the cost of having Megumi become the new vessel for Sukuna. And at this point in the story it wouldn't make much sense for him to come back, all the development he could have made throughout the arcs got locked away the moment he became a vessel. I would very much prefer for him to be dead rather than having some random comeback with an insane power-up out of thin air
