As soon as my voice droped when i was about 13. I was no longer treated as child but as a man. With all responsibility but none of the abbiilty or experience. Being a relatively tall man with a deep bas voice, people treat you more harshly, less helpful, less trusting. In a videogame i can relive the fantasy, of being given love and affection.

It is really simple for me. I've spent 35 some odd years as a guy I might as well play as a girl. Also girls get the best looking gear and frankly I grew up stuck playing as action hero guys and enjoy kicking ass with a cute avatar. There have been the occasional game that did make me want the beefy guy tank but most of the time it feels more entertaining to go the route of Kaede or Bisky.

I remember my first female character in a game was in monster hunter 4U, and I remember being amazed by the number of different styles that female characters had compared to male characters. It was after that I started playing female characters in games to compare the style of armor and outfits. Though now a days outfits are rather unisex with few exceptions, at least in games I play.

To me it is more or less the same, but the pathway is different. In the 2000's, one of the first anime crushes was May from Pokemon, and Pokemon Ruby was the first game I ever played that allowed me to choose gender. I chose May. She NEVER looked attractive in that pixelated model, so "attraction" was not the matter directly. I played May because I liked to imagine her, my crush/waifu, being the hero I hoped her to be/become. But I played Pokemon for 10 years, always defaulting to Female, so I eventually started playing female characters our of tradition, and I still do. Not because they are attractive, not because their hitboxes are smaller. I play girls because I literally don't know why I would even play male in games that allow me to choose. Sure, I started off because of attraction, but my attraction was for the anime character, not the game one, so you can see the separation. Edit: attraction, however, TOTALLY plays a role in why I only use anime girls as profile pictures. I like to see my waifus whenever I talk on Discord or Facebook Messenger.

@@NothingXemnas IIRC, creator of the Dreamfall/TLJ adventure games stated he made his protags female because they were easier to empathize with. Men generally are expected to act a certain way while women have more free reign, so he could be more emotional or exploratory without it coming off as weird or wrong. I do play both male and female characters similarly to you; not specifically crush/waifu but wanting to see what that character's story is going to be. True, in Pokemon I quite often play as the female character, although I have no real reason for it. There's no real choices in Pokemon (at least the older games) so it's not like I'm RPing their journey or something. I think originally I chose to go with female because the original games were male-only and I just kind of stuck with it.

There are so many people i know who think that way too, playing MMOs to create the most idealized version of themselves they can. But i never enjoy games or MMOs for that reason. Im not self inserting anywhere, i just like experiencing characters separated from reality. It gets really bizarre for others though, ill never understand the need to ERP your avatar in FFXIV for instance like what happened to that unfortunate dude in the video.
@legacymse7095
@legacymse7095 Ай бұрын
I think that people who NEED to create an avatar as close as possible to them have serious empathy issues and are unable to connect with a character if it’s a different race or gender. But is it really playing as someone else when you actively control that character for hundreds of hours, choose dialogue and make decisions? Immersion by interaction is the whole point of video games as an art form, so in a sense it’s you but not you.
@alter_ech0
@alter_ech0 Ай бұрын
@legacymse7095 this still sounds like those people who play aspects of themselves in game, which is fundamentally different from how I play. I'm not looking to become a character either directly or indirectly. Immersion is higher for me when I feel less conscious about myself making decisions for the characters. Which is why old-school bioware games or dialogue tree MMO's to me can't stand up to a game like Baldurs gate III nowadays. BG3 has so many insane moments of spontaneity it feels like a lifelike world on its own. I did have that interest in exploring characters and feeling myself control their individuality back in the day though. Now I'm just more enjoying fleshed out separate characters or worlds themselves. And I haven't touched a recent MMO in half a decade too.

@@alter_ech0 My problem with inserting oneself into a character, is that it's limited and limiting af. I very much prefer a strong story with a defined character that has/had a life before I got behind the wheel, than a noname with no personality and belifs of their own. Not a linear story, that's a different thing. I hate playing hollow shells, that are made this way precisely for some to insert their perspective into it.

Well, it probably varies community to community. League of Legends right now has a fun little drama where people are mass banning Ahri specifically because of a $500 skin for the whaliest of whales, just to stop them from playing (and to protest the concept of a $500 skin). Obviously, someone dumping five hundred into League for one single skin showcases conspicuous spending to the extreme, wealth signalling, but it has the reverse effect there, they want nothing to do with the rich ones.

I know that there are stats that say 50% of gamers are women, but that includes mobile. Capcom did a bunch of polls recently and one of them was a stat of the gender ratio of players. That stat came out to be 82% male, 14% female, and 4% other so I think that on PC and consoles based on those statics it's probably closer to 15%-30% on those platforms.

If you're looking at your character in say World of Warcraft in combat and you need to move because fire is bad but you're too busy looking at the cape you're wearing and not paying any actual attention.. On the cape note, capes exist in nearly every MMORPG, if there is no option to hide said cape what use is the excuse of "i'd rather look at an ass that looks good" when you can't logically see it. Plenty of arguments to be made when a pixelated body becomes the primary reason of playing a specific gender. I personally play male characters on the sole fact that I'd rather look badass and most armor in WoW especially for plate simply looks better on male characters. Leather/mail (more or less one in the same I guess) looks great on both genders and robes generally look more appealing on female bodies. Not to say that men can't wear robes and look good but generally speaking cloth armor in most mmorpgs generally look bad on men. The only reasoning I see that men play female characters in MMORPGs specifically is to get handed everything on a silver plater, basically using people for their own benefit. Which is inherently a toxic method of progressing.

I can answer from my own perspective: When I make a character, I want that character to generally be as different from me as possible so I can "roleplay" and get invested more. So I always pick ones that are as far away from "big and tall human male" as possible. In skyrim Im always playing as female khajit, maybe an argonian, but never one of the human races. The only time I make an exception is if the female voice is annoying in a game cause I suck and get hit a lot, so like in legends arceus I always go with the male character instead. Also, and this is a big one, female armor/customization is almost always better too.

My reason is because I am basically creating an oc character and sometimes they are female. For example in star wars old republic mmo I basically wanted to make a dominant tall sith lord woman called darth killra. While the story is still set in place, I basically added lore for the character, that she was a slave”true to sith sorcerer so nothing new” and she doesn’t like killing people and innocent people, so she has a kind heart, but the more she kills the more powerful she gets, so to escape the toxic society of the sith empire because she hates it so much, she has to kill as many people as possible, because when she does, she hates herself more and becomes more powerful so she can take down powerful foes. In conclucion the more she hates the things around her and herself, she gets stronger and while doing so earned her the name ”Darth Killra”. Yeah it is really just fan fiction lmao.

1. Most male characters have poor options and customization (one body type, sliders that don't do anything, no decent hair); 2. Most customization is geared toward "dress-up", something I find better fit for a female body type. "Modest", "practical" and "smart" attire is extremely rare and often overdone to the point of ridiculousness which defeats the point of seeking these male styles of clothing; 3. I don't tend to do self-inserts, specially if I can't create a character that is like me in appearence (the greatest majority of the time) and the characters I control are shown to display a personality of their own. That's like half-assing; 4. And yes, I'm a guy who likes girls. If I'm going to see my character model most of the time like in a third-person game, I will gravitate toward the bodytype I like looking at if all else fails. I think that in the end, it's probably better for the game that their character creators are more gared toward "creating a waifu" rather than "making your own insert". Sure I'd love to have both and I always find it disappointing when the male character creation seemingly exists as more of an afterthought, but when it comes down to time management I suppose the former does generate the most income for the effort.

I play both as female and male depending on the game and build I'm doing. For example I usually play a female avatar for assassin, rouge, ninja, and Holy or healing builds. Male for warrior, paladin, and barbarian. It has more do to with does your build justify the setting of the game and makes sense.

My FFXIV character is a female. The story in 14 is so good that I became super attached to this character. In the true spirit of an RPG, it's not just "what would I say in this situation" anymore, it's "what would _she_ say." And I never put her in skimpy outfits, because it feels the same type of weird as seeing my sister in a bikini. Not sure I'd care about this game as much if I was just playing as Meathunk McAxemuscles. The occasional compliments on my glam is also a decent ego booster 😅

When i was studying for game dev we had to gather some studies on this stuff. Two studies got the result that men are less limited in who they can relate to as a character in games based on the Sex/Gender than women and the data suggested them being less picky and more about fun of just doing it. "aka sexy lady" reaction was not a majority answer though it was still pretty high up there. Also the studies if i remember correctly mainly looked at single-player games with actual characters with their own personality.

Funny that he mentions Black Desert Online because despite being a Korean, gender-locked MMO, they have consistently released really good looking clothing for both the male and female classes. The art department takes their time releasing new outfits to make sure that they look very pleasing for every class, and even if you don't like a specific color style you can easily dye the outfit to your liking. It's a step beyond to actually give the players control in what their outfit looks like beyond a few toggles to remove the helmet or cape, and I think that's why BDO's outfits are very well-received in general.

as a female trans person, who has lived their life for 28 years as a male, and about 5 years as a female now, i have always chosen female characters. better overall looks, its more pleasing for me to hear a female voice than a usually deep male voice. male characters usually are not surreal, overly bulky, overly bodybuilder type.. how many guys do you see in life being a massive block of muscle able to lift cars as if its nothing... its just not real.. not everyone is a swartzeneiger... clothing options are usually way more advanced on the female side aswell. i am a person who likes long hair, you almost never see guys with long hair in videogames, most stereotype is spikey short hair.. and ive learned, because i have made male characters because of lore and overal fantasy better fitting reasons, that people are more willing to be friendly and sympathise more when you play as a female. now when i transitioned, and i say fully transitioned ( nobody would ever guess i was born male anymore, i mean nobody..) life has shown me that people are like that irl aswell. people talk more, people treat you more kindly, just because im a woman. as a male i was often just ignored, even when struggling somewhere, i would be left for my own's help. as a woman i constantly get helped to reach something, or when people see im not comfortable, people aproach me and ask if everything is okay... its the same thing. irl is resembled in videogames, because it gives the same vibe to it. ( and then theres the whole sexualisation part ofc).

One thing that wasn't mentioned that I've thought of after asking myself why I personally tend to play female characters in story-based games is the self-insertion (no pun intended) aspect. What I mean is, when I play a game that is heavily story focused, I tend to pick female characters if possible. But when I play first/third person shooter games, or survival games (games that don't have a deep story) I play male characters. When I've picked female characters for the non-story games in the past, I always felt weirded out playing as a female character. It didn't feel right. But when I play story-focused games, it felt better then playing as a male. I think this comes down to the fact that when I play a story-focused game, I don't want to self-insert myself as the character because, a lot of times, that character will react to events in the story that I personally wouldn't emulate, so it would take me out of the story if I self-inserted and then the character does something I disagree with. Playing as a female character, I don't self-insert, so when a story beat happens that I personally wouldn't have done, then I'm fine with it because it's not me, it's my female character, who is a separate entity in my mind. Or perhaps I'm reading into this too much and I just like looking at a nice backside ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to play female characters more often when I was younger, and I still kind of do sometimes, but the older I get I just go with the male option because it feels more immersive to me. It's harder to see myself in that world if I'm controlling a female character. Yeah, a female character is more pleasing to look at, but I also think it changes the way I make decisions in a virtual world because I like to reflect the decisions *I* would make if I were actually in that world, especially if I am playing an MMO, and playing as a female character I would more think about what this fictional character would do instead of what *I* would do.

I've asked in the past what they've think about a guy pretending to a girl vtuber (in relation to possibly doing it myself) one of the most common phrases I got saying something to the effect of (and sometimes verbatim worded as) "Sometimes it takes a man to be best girl" and its something I can't exactly disagree with, and it's very occasionally a thought in my mind that pops up every once in a while. I also think I gravitate towards female characters because generally speaking my fashion desires for male characters massively differ from that of female characters. With male characters I want to be less like Superman in bodytype and more like The Flash while the outfit might be more of a mix of a hooded urban suit/robed, with female characters varying in bodytype, but always usually being in big-ass armor, similar to the urban suit look (just with long hair drooping out of the hood) or something like thick pants and gym shirt with some sneakers and fingerless gloves. It's partly why I don't get into MMOs much while I fuck with any souls game, there's so many good armor combos to look like a total badass as any gender.

This is a fascinating topic for me as a male asexual. I can look back to when I started picking female characters and see that there was usually a gameplay reason, or go even further back to how some female characters in RPGs were standout favourites for either their gameplay elements or what they represented, but none of it feels like enough to explain why female is my default and now there has to be something standout unique about a male character for me to pick them. A good example of how this is muddy for me would be Tales of Symphonia, my favourite character is Sheena, I like her personality, how her personal story goes and she's the only party member that can summon, however even being able to freely pick who to play as, I typically just stick with Lloyd because he's fun and reliable to use in combat. I believe Phantasy Star 1 planted the idea of preferring playing as a female lead, Alissa starting out as a fairly nobody girl next door type and the opening quest being to find two experienced heroes to help you, and it was Phantasy Star Online that kicked me on the female default path, I started as a male fighter type but ended up making a female alt to try get specific rare drops and just ended up preferring the attack animations (which were slightly gameplay changing).

@10:05 .. yes, exactly. Guy characters always look either like skinny noodles stretches or macho super commandos and feel very boring. With a female character we feel more expressive, more fun, more mulan. We can be more cute or funny, do more stuff that we feel is sassy, seductive, or even flirty, that the guy character lets us do. We can even behave in ways that are fun or bold with girl characters that would get us arrested or fired (eg butt bumping other characters) in real guy life. If we wanted to play as tough stoic responsible for everything problem fix-it male role characters we'd just go bulk/stretch at the gym and work extra shifts. Sure, playing girl characters gets us hate from girlfriends and wives, but often they hate games and won't play anyway, often will ignore us when gaming - and generally IRL girls have more boring hang-ups and aren't as cute, fun, sassy, seductive, or flirty as guys in game, so we can have the fun that we wish girls would give us and not have to worry about crap real girls through...or give out... [i.e. basically same reason girls play as girl characters, less "the representation"]

Another factor to consider is how readily a person directly identifies with their avatar. Some people see the character more as a projection of themselves into the game space. So they might create a character that looks like themselves or is an idealized form of themselves or even is nothing like themselves but is what they would like to be which might lead to the gender bending. But people who think this way often don't realize that not everyone things this way. Many people will create a character that they see as an independent character. much like an author might create many characters in their story. Or how a GM might create many characters for this week's role playing game. The character doesn't need to secretly be you. All this to say that how you perceive your character can greatly effect what you choose to play as.

The gender-locked classes stuff is often a reason to actually quit a game once you've done all you can with the character you like.

I want to feel like I’m part of the world and all that, with my character having at least a few of my primary physical traits, like height and build. If I ever played as a girl, it was literally just to check that booty lol I can also confirm that at least in ESO, which is the MMO I’ve played the most, I have never been approached out of nowhere by other players. I have played it for years at this point, and that’s literally why I have no friends in the game, that and I also don’t like joining random guilds. I’m a solo player for the most part.

I Play Final Fantasy 14 and j made a female Roegadyn character as a joke. Fast forward and I can’t believe how much I enjoy collecting dresses for her ._. She’s also a muscle mommy and that’s awesome
