I’m in deep east Texas and had planted these from seed for a few years. When they’d be done for the year I’d take them out and toss them on a pile and just leave it. This year I never planted any and the stand of them that came back from the years of piled plants was mind blowing!! They reached at least 12-14 feet tall and flowered in yellow to red!!! Simply stunning!! I have video where it looked like leaves were raining down from the trees…..it was BUTTERFLIES!!! Every color of the rainbow-hundreds of butterflies❤❤❤❤❤❤ The hummers loved them, they were alive with beautiful insects like bumble and honey bees. Also, you can stick a piece of the stem into the ground and it’ll grow. They’re an incredible source of potassium and nitrogen as a fertilizer and are so good for erosion control. They are a gift from God to us.❤

One of my favorites to grow. Butterflies love them. I remember one year I walked outside to find butterflies swarming around them! It was almost scary because I had never seen such a large group of butterflies. The flowers are a beautiful, brilliant shade of orange. I grow them every year. I almost always get a 'volunteer' every year from last years seeds re-seeding themselves.

Couldn't agree more. In fact, I picked up a packet of discount seed and planted it and oh my gosh, I was in love with it instantly. It eventually reached 7 ft in height and my gosh, the buzzers and birds were in nirvana. I've never seen a plant attract butterflies quite like this. Since it is tall it will blow over with high winds so I put the largest tomato cage I can find and run two 6 ft. stakes zip tied to the cage. As it grows you'll need to train the center leader to stay inside the cage (yes, it gets that big) so it's got good support.

I have been growing this for the last 5 years and it’s my favorite! It is a magnet for monarch butterflies. I now save way too much seed (I had to watch several KZbinrs explanations as they are sharp). I see seed packets at many garden centers or big box stores. I plant the seed directly in the ground in late May and I get blooms in August through the first frost in mid October. Mine are only orange. If I plant them along the fence, the squirrels enjoy them, too. I used to plant many along my fence as we usually get a couple strong wind storms and I tie the large stems to the fence with just a little twine as they can blow over…but don’t worry, they will continue to bloom and grow up from the ground level. So happy to see others love this stunning plant. I am in northwest Ohio 6a.

Going to plant them out soon. We won’t have a frost until the beginning of December. So I’m hoping to have some success. I’ve heard such great things about it. Thanks for sharing! I always love your videos and enthusiasm!

I have never tried to direct sow them. I have zero luck direct sowing the regular sunflowers here. The birds just think it's a personal buffet for them. I started some in seed trays in late June and got them to germinate and now they are planted and about 2' tall. I imagine you are going to have amazing luck. Please keep me posted on how that works. I would love to know more. Thank you for saying such sweet things. That made my day! I appreciate you watching and taking time to leave a comment :-)

@thesoutherndaisyllc there's a local church downtown Baton Rouge and every few months farmers/gardeners give away seeds. The LSU AG center comes its really interesting. They encourage us to save seed!

Hi! So enjoy your enthusiasm and bright smile. You have won me over and I will try these exceptional annuals. I’m in North Texas, zone 8b, and I hope they survive our triple digit weeks of summer. I had orange trumpet vines years ago, along my back fence, and regretted ever planting them, since they were horribly invasive, and 30 years later, I’m still pulling the occasional one out. I’m concerned that these might be invasive as well 😬, but they sound like they are worth a try!!
@thesoutherndaisyllc10 ай бұрын
Thank you so very much. What a beautiful message. I appreciate your sharing this. I think they actually thrive in the hotter the better triple digit temps. They are not invasive at all for me but def do your research!! Let me know how it goes!

I grow the other variety, Tithonia Diversifolia with yellow flowers, I use them predominantly as a natural fertilizer but I also want to attract beneficial wildlife, they are loved by bees and Butterflies as well
@thesoutherndaisyllc8 ай бұрын
I am interested in growing that also. Is it the same growth habit as the orange like 12 feet tall? Also people have mentioned it’s super invasive. Have you had any experience with that? I don’t have an issue with that as I’m happy to have things self seed, but just wanted to be able to educate myself on the yellow one.
@jordanhuguenard83158 ай бұрын
@@thesoutherndaisyllc I believe they get to around 6 to 9 ft tall, and they are only invasive if you neglect pruning, they can produce air roots if it's humid like it is here in Florida so if the branches touch the soil while it's still on the plant, it can spread from the branches, I'd say even without air roots already they will produce them fast because they are in contact with the soil, I have had no problems with the invasive side of it because I use them to fertilize my plants so they are constantly pruned every other month or so, also it is very hard for them to self seed based on the research I have done, the seeds are inert and have a very low possibility of germinating, but so far I have had no issues with the 11 plants I have in my yard, very easy to grow and propagate

Just a heads up for my fellow Floridians, make sure you get this variety (Tithonia Rotundifolia) as opposed to the potentially invasive Tithonia Diversifolia. These have orange flowers and are Florida friendly where as the T. Diversifolia have yellow flowers and is being watched as it has a high invasive risk and is not recommended by UF/IFAS. If monitored though it’s better for chop and drop, but you have to be very vigilant that it does not spread.

I will try this sunflower plant but in New Zealand it costs 4 dollars for 10 seeds, although by the looks of the plant I'll never need to buy seeds again.
@thesoutherndaisyllc24 күн бұрын
I know that’s a lot of money for seeds upfront but once you buy the seeds one time you can save them every year after and never have to buy the seeds again

I'm growing them for the first time in the middle Tennessee area. Absolutely gorgeous flowers so incredibly bright. Butterflies and bees are all over them. Mine are about 8 feet tall and wide. Had two huge ones 12 feet that a storm blew over. Next year I'm stalking them better. Fantastic plant anD so easy.

YES!! So easy and so worth it. I got smart this year and put a tomato cage around each one and it has saved them from crazy winds and even a flood. Maybe try that next year.

😍 WOW! Your video is a sharp contrast to one i watched just before by a guy in HI. Lol His zone must be paradise for this plant bc he is not happy! Lol But YOUR video comes from different area altogether and encourages me more. I am in 7b (NW GA) and just discovered this plant last week while perusing seeds at Walmart. The pkg gives VERY little instruction and no characteristics so i didn't know how tall it got nor the light and soil it needs. I certainly don't want it out of control (like HI guy's is), but would love to provide something for pollinators. I also bought wildflower seeds for that same reason. Maybe i could put the Tithonia at the back side and wildflowers in front of it. 😊 Here in GA, we have a LOT of clay. Do you amend your soil at all to plant the Mexican Sunflower? Is full sun good for it? My yard gets full sun all day long. There's not too much area that gets shade, accept right next to the house. Do the roots go deep or wide? Thank you for sharing this information. ❤ In my seed searching, I also found a "Dwarf Teddy Bear" Sunflower. Ever heard if it? Not me! But for .50-cents I thought I'd try it. 😊
@thesoutherndaisyllc7 ай бұрын
The roots don’t go deep and don’t spread wide either. It’s such a simple amazing plant. Yes let that be the background and flowers in front. But just so you know, this is a great standalone plant. It puts on such a show. I don’t think you are going to see anything in front of it. It blooms from the ground all the way up to the top and mine get 10 to 15 feet tall and about 3 to 5 feet wide. I highly recommend this plant to anyone. I can’t find any bad lol
