Mexican sunflowers are amazing plants that make my yard so pretty all summer and at least where I am, through fall to the first frost. Thank you for your knowledge and video!

Hi Nancy, I always collect my seeds and just sprinkle them on the soil. They need the light to germinate. Have fun.

Loved the video! In SC zone 8a. From seed, I planted Ferry Morse Orange Mex. Sunflower last yr. It became massive, so I cut it down. It quickly regrew to be even larger! I saved the seeds & planted this yr. in perfect location. The plants are massive 8 ‘ tall, but no blooms. Looks like weed trees. I’m getting ready to chop them down. I understand the plant is high in nitrogen & makes great compost. -I’ll have to look for the type you have next yr.

I also collected seeds and planted them. Previously the plant grew only 2 meter high. The last batch was about 8 meters high and flowered profusely. The trunk was massive. I had so many blooms and just filled every room in the house. It was wonderful.

It is beautiful and the colour amazing and you will get butterflies. As it grows you may need to support the stem as they do get tall.

That's easy! Snip it off when petals fall off & let it dry out. Tons of seeds within. Be careful tho...it becomes prickly when stiff & dry🌞

Nice tutorial. So you just scatter the seeds in soil and you don't cover them with soil? Thanks. 😊
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the tutorial! Yes just sow them on top of the soil as the seeds require sunlight to germinate. Happy gardening.

Great video. Can you pick the flowers and dry while in bloom. It is getting colder where we live.
@redsoilgardener2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carroll, after the blooming and the spent flower falls and you can see the seed drying out, and turning darker, this is the time when the seeds are drying out. Though I always recommend to let the seeds dry out on the plant, it is because, the seeds could look dry but they still have retained moisture so when you harvest and place in a jar they turn mouldy. So what i recommend is to collect the seed now and spread them out thinly so that they dry naturally. For quicker response choose an area that does not have humidity such as a window sill or kitchen. then should be fine.

So if I understand you would have to replant every year in Midwest?
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
The Mexican sunflower is an annual. So it only survives one season. Once the flowers go into seed production, collect the seeds and replant the next season.

Curious if you leave the flower heads on the plant to dry to harvest seeds do the birds bother with them or are they to hard for the birds to get the seeds.
@redsoilgardener2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, thanks for sharing. The seeds are inside the spiky flower head. And as the seed ball dries, the spike are quite painful to touch. So the birds don' t bother at this stage.
