the method Michelangelo used to sculpt him was even more impressive. He made smaller replicas first and submerged them in water to create horizontal slices of the statue that he could see, then he would go and sculpt whatever was above the water onto the huge 17 ft marble. He would then take out water a bit at a time to reveal more of the miniature. It's similar to how 3d printers print stuff in that they start from top to bottom in horizontal printing rows. He also destroyed the miniature models to prevent people from seeing his process!

it's also worth mentioning that no statue of considerable size is executed by one single sculptor, the main artist make the plan and direct many sculptors that remove the 95% of the marble, then the main artist steps in and does the last 1/2 cm.

Just saw the “David” statue today in person in Florence Italy. Everything you say is spot on and yet so much more! There’s a story the way Michelangelo depicted his strong hands. Even his legs appear to have hair if you look at the surface of the marble at just the right angle. Unbelievable. What a masterpiece!

I saw The David on a high school trip to Europe. The museum that holds David today has him in a very tall but somewhat less broad room that forces you to be close to David and look up. His hands and feet and head are oversized to make him appear in scale to those on the ground level. He has veins standing out on his arms and hands. He is incredibly lifelike and everyone who see’s him is hushed by his beauty. He’s pretty amazing.

Thanks for the video *Camille* Using the eye pupils to direct the viewers attention is a technique Renaissance artists used. In this case one pupil (David's right) engages the viewer, then his left tells you where the action is going to be. Michelanglo also suffered from life long kidney stones and gout. Michelanglo's panel on the Sistine Chapel of God creating *land from water* depicts him coming out of a kidney. In other words, a calcium-oxalate or uric acid stone forming in a superstatured solution of calcium and oxalic/uric acid. Art imitating Life. There are other examples, God touching Adam's finger shows him coming out of a human skull or brain. Also, Florence's Botticelli painting 'Primavera'/Spring has a shape around the main figure's head in the form of a pair of lungs. The opening through the trees. Just as we have alveolar clusters in our lungs for respiration, plants transpire though stomata openings on their leaves. Point is, Michelanglo was also an Anatomist to study the human body as were others, i.e. Leonardo di Vinci. P.s. Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Baroque 'David' uses the whole body to express movement. First, in the spiral winding up pose, and then showing the spirals of the muscles on how they wrap around the bones from the feet to the head. The body has two bilateral symetrical continous spirals forming a helix. Sort of a spring as shown in Bernini's David ready to unwind. Bernini used a 1:10 ratio porportion for his statue. Ten equal lenghts of the head equate to the human height to give his figure a more elongated form. On average its 1:8 for men, 1:7 for women. Michelanglo's body proportions were based on the lenght of a middle finger. A hand would be two fingers in lenght, one finger plus the palm which is one finger long. Then, the lower arm, three fingers long, and so on for the rest of the body.

Nice video! - surprised you did not talk about the rivalry between Michelangelo and DaVince who was originally selected to do this piece It was to be an inspiration to the Florentines who were in conflict with other (city states) parts of what would become Italy.
@Mandolin_Matt2 жыл бұрын
Da Vinci was never selected to carve the David, not least since he was a painter. He was, however, part of the committee which decided to relocate David from the Duomo to the Palazzo Vecchio when it was finished in 1504. Michelangelo and Da Vinci did work opposite each other on frescos in the Sala Grande in the Palazzo Vecchio shortly after.
@Britgirl582 жыл бұрын
Maybe because this was a video about David the statue and not the artist himself.
@leslieseale97612 жыл бұрын
@@Mandolin_Matt I guess history evolves. The book the Oil and the Marble the writer says both men were chosen to sculpt what would become David. Florence wanted something defiant as their conflicts waged. There is extensive info (on the internet:) that DaVinci did sculpt particularly as a young man. And as you say DaVinci was on a committee to agree to the public placement. Anyway until I read that book I had not known that they even knew each other. 700 years ago I’m sure new info will surface. 😊
@Mandolin_Matt2 жыл бұрын
@@leslieseale9761 absolutely - research is always ongoing and our knowledge evolves all the time. It's part of what makes all this so interesting :) if you're interested in reading more about Michelangelo's sculpture, Cristina Acidini Luchinat's book 'Michelangelo, Sculptor' is an excellent and up-to-date publication that can be bought for a very good price. Leonardo did sculpt, but his experience in the medium was limited and he had no record of monumental marble statuary on the level required by the David commission. He worked on a bronze rearing horse for Ludovico Sforza in Milan, but bronze casting is an entirely different process to marble carving. The only surviving sculpture of Leonardo's (still contested but attributed to Leonardo by Francesco Caglioti, an excellent scholar of sculpture) is a terracotta Madonna and Child. It was just attributed to him recently, which is quite exciting!

missed a lot of the cool history! michelangelo was considered a master at 21 among other masters who dedicated their life’s work already to the craft. when michelangelo unveiled his david the council in florence that it was revealed to didn’t decide to not move it up there because it was to heavy, it was because it was so perfect they felt its beauty would be diminished if you couldn’t see the details. when it was placed in the square it originally was faced in the direction of rome as a defiant gesture from the leaders of Florence. his biggest detractor and the only people who didn’t think the statue of david was special was leonardo divinci! his biggest hater was another one of the greatest and he did it all at a young age. best part of the story imo

Two odd points to consider. The Biblical David was circumcised and yet the great statue doesn't depict it accurately. Why, I have no clue but surely the artist consulted religious authorities, probably some Jewish folks (who lived right there, although in a "ghetto"). I am making a big assumption that he knew that Jews performed circumcision. Second, why go out of his way to depict the great warrior without clothes. No way he ever appeared in public without clothing. It makes we wonder if the Greek sculptures had an effect on Michelangelo?
