As someone that was reading Ultimate Spider-Man at the time Miles was created, I genuinely think he's one of (if not the) best new Marvel characters in decades. He carries with him everything that Peter was to teenagers and young adults back in the 60/70/80s, whilst also being a great representation of his culture and heritage.

That's cool but isn't that tokenism like I have no Spidey to identify with but I still wanted to be a Spider-Man and to some extent still kinda do like there is no part Hawaiian, part black, part Chinese & Japanese, part belizean 19 year old spider that lives in LA (I literally have no idea what 🤷🏻‍♂️ I should use because none of them look like me so I'm just gonna use this one) 🤷🏻‍♂️ I guess that's fine as a kid but grown up and still seeing that fact about miles being like you is kinda weird. Character over skin color because I'll never have a spider that's like me and that's ok.

@@staple_boi i dont think miles is a token cause his character isnt just him being black and if anything its a small part of the overall message of his story about legacy and the fear of messing up what was already built he just happens to be black and latino. And aside from the skin color and the place of origin i share a lot in similarities with the overall story like getting into charter school, strained connection with family and just fear of bigger expectations than i felt were necessary for me but i latched onto him not just because he was black cause originally i could have a similar stand in with peter and his stories but miles' resonated with me better, not because hes black but because it just so happens that hos stories tell something i can relate to in experience. Of course you arent going to find a 1 to 1 character unless you're one specific race/nationality but if theres an experience that you feel you can vibe with then I think thats also its own representation.

Exactly. Peter grows up, and moves on leaving someone he trusts in the role. We watch Miles grow and by then when he is ready to grow up and move on maybe Mayday or Annie takes over. I've always liked Miles but Spider-verse was the first time he actually felt different. Unique from Peter. I liked it so much that I'm kinda mad they brought him over to the main continuity. It just feels a little off having Miles who basically earned the Spider-man name exist in the same world as Peter who isn't dead and is still swinging. Don't get me wrong. i am a sucker for Peter mentoring Miles especially when you know his children don't exist in that continuity making it feel more personal. But i feel Miles works best alone. Taking Nightwing as an example, he was Robin, he would eventually become Batman. He wasn't a fan of the idea because it wasn't him. Nor didn he want to be Robin when he saw his brother's literally fitting his shoes. i want Miles to be different from Peter. The same way Miss Marvel is different from Carol (Although in that case they have different names). They've tried calling him Kid Arachnid , Spy-D and more but it didn't stick. If you aren't gonna make Miles Spider-man. A man who earned the name, then make him Miles, Hell have him take up the name of the Prowler if it means he can redeem his Uncle, have him make new suits, just dont have him and Peter as Spidey at the same time. Call him tarantula if you want. Like how Miguel O'HAra is to always be Spidey in the distant future, let Miles be the Spidey that takes over when Peter retires. Till then have him be who he is, then when the time comes have him embrace the mantle and do it his way. In my ideal marvel universe. Peter retires after he finishes training Miles. Miles then becomes not a better spider-man but a different one. He becomes his version of spider-man. He by nature is different to Peter. He already earned the name once, him gaining it again would be when he is finally confident in his abilities. To be like his hero. Of course I always pictured him helping out with baby May and eventually training her to sue her powers like Peter did for him (because we all know Peter would go out in a final fight as selflessly as possible) . Maybe he retires just as May starts and the cycle ends with Mayday now older training Miguel . i'll admit i identify more with peter, as a nerdy kid who was bullied but i'd be lying if i said parts of Miles aren't endearing. I'm all for representation but only if it is done right. No tokenism . I feel a bunch of the recent examples have been bad but others like Miles and Kamala are done well and should be further explored. I'm not a fan of killing someone off just to make their successor diverse. Probably why Riri left a bad taste in my mouth. But even she grew on me. Once she proved she wasn't ironman but her own character. No one should be a hallow shell of their predecessor. Miles shouldn't be a skin for Peter and riri shouldn't for Tony. They should be different, unique. Looking at DC i could tell you what makes every Flash or Batfamily member different, What they like, what they hate, who they are. That is what Marvel should do. If they want a Spider family of sorts or something, they shoudln't be copy pasted. They should all be themselves. Ultimate Miles was different but he still felt too samey. Movie Miles felt way different, not just to Peter B. But to Blond Peter from earlier in the movie. Part of that is because he wasn't spiderman for long but part of that is who he is. You are right, different experiences make different people. Someone who has experienced prejudice may want to take more steps to preventing that from happening, someone who was hurt badly by something would want to make sure no one is hurt again. Magneto is admittedly an extremist but his heart is in the right place. He saw what power could do and now he wants what he couldn't have. Charles on the other hand didn't experience that, he is more optimistic and in some instances more naive to someone's intentions as shown in First Class, then there is Logan who doesn't even know who he is and thus has to form who he is from his decisions. Everyone is different. You shouldn't see Riri or Miles as replacements, you should see them as other people, people like their predecessors but with different views Miles has different strengths both literally and figuratively then Peter. He ain't as smart but he is probably more down to earth. He isn't crippled with the obsession of responsibility at all cost yet he chooses to act to help others. Spider Geddon did many things but contrasting him with Otto who doesn't even view him as notable when compared to Peter was great, Miles struggled to lead against and with a smarter adversary. He ain't Doc Ock Smart. Yet it was his plan that won and they managed to come to a conclusion that didn't result in killing. Could Peter have done that? Hell yeah but it wouldn't have panned out the same. Alliances would have been formed. If Spiderverse was Peter vs Otto, then SpiderGeddon was Miles Vs Otto. With the sequel to that being a confusing mess honestly that doesn't make much sense at least to me. I want more stories of Miles' future. SPider-man:Life Story Showed a world where Miles came to be when Peter was already an old man. We never see Miles once he embraces being the only Spidey but it shows his pain in what Otto did to him. i'd love to see his take on it all. Great Video as Always Drake. God you deserve more subs

To me, Miles is just as much Spider-Man as Wally West is the Flash and Hal Jordan is Green Lantern. Even though Barry Allen and Allen Scott originated those roles, they were succeeded by some great legacy characters. It is better when Miles is a solo Spider-Man, but them working as partners creates interesting new stories for both of them.

As a Hispanic guy who grew up in a household where we all spoke (ya guessed it) spanish and seeing the home and neighborhood as well as the struggles that Spider Verse Miles went through, I honestly found myself relating with him a lot more than I ever did with Peter. Now as an adult, I relate with Peter Parker due to also being a broke college kid and having to deal with adulthood as well as greater responsibilities that come with it. And while I will always love the OG as he's one of my 3 favorite characters in all of fiction, I love it that I can relate to another character who carries his legacy and is a completely different person who is tied more to the culture and language I grew up in. It might sound pretentious, but hey. What can ya really do?

Honestly, I've always had some issues with modern interpretations of Peter Parker. Back in the day, sure, being a geeky, kinda socially awkward dork would cause you genuine strife, you'd be bullied and you wouldn't be looked at as an ideal by any stretch. But being a nerd doesn't make you an outsider anymore, it's the norm. Sure, being a literal genius would be a little different, but it's unlikely you would achieve full on outsider status if you were an otherwise pretty average dude the way Peter is. He's not unattractive, he's reasonably funny and nice and there's literally no reason why someone looking at him would think of him as abnormal. He's not an underdog anymore, and that was meant to be a big part of the fantasy. An underdog who gains the power to be a hero, and keeps on being a hero even when he continues to be looked at as an outsider. Miles works because he does fit that outsider archetype, and they emphasized that in Into the Spiderverse. I think that's why it resonated, even beyond the implications of drawing on more of Miles' heritage and fleshing out his personality, they made him fit where Peter Parker no longer does. He's an underdog we want to root for and see ourselves in when we are feeling like underdogs. The fact that he also happens to represent people that Peter couldn't? Bonus!
@staple_boi
@staple_boi 3 жыл бұрын
Miles can't represent me either neither can Peter that's not why I root for Peter or Miles to some extent. Perfect example are from Spider-Man 2 or Homecoming both having to pull of extreme feats selflessness and strength especially Tom's performance when trying to lift the ruble off of him I was rooting for him(inside my head I was rooting for Spidey like a I was 9 when I was 15-16 when homecoming came out) because that's his new thing to overcome the thing that makes Peter an underdog again is his villains.

I slightly disagree with one of your takes. True background and heritage of a character are really important regarding his motivations and PART of his personality, but you have to remember that the character is not only his heritage. If you focus only on that aspect you can turn him into just another token.
@RuffWarl0ck
@RuffWarl0ck 3 жыл бұрын
That was what I was about to bring up. Having TOO MUCH Foreground Representation kinda just loops back around to Tokenism and makes your character one-note and trope-ish again. Focusing too much on a single archetype only serves to detract from the potential depth of your character. There is a fine line to a lot of this.
@alessandrolamera8857
@alessandrolamera8857 3 жыл бұрын
Nathan Lemuel then in the end, the exposure to this kind of thing can create 2 different results. 1) doubt for every kind of representation, including Foreground representation because it’s mistaken as tokenism, even if there is no tokenism in that particular product. The other is 2) complete acceptance of every single tipe of representation, including tokenism mistaken as foreground representation. Both are extreme opposite and both are equally bad.

@@alessandrolamera8857 it is usually obvious when the foreground is a different style of tokenism and it usually comes down to bad writing. Having the diverse character speak in a stereotypically heavy accent and doing one liners is an example of what I mean. The trick is to have *true* racial diversity in the writer’s room. It is ENTIRELY okay and at times rewarding to write a great character that is not the same heritage, but having someone who is of that heritage involved in the process tends to make the character and story a lot more authentic. ITSV is a good example of this.

I think I know the issues you're talking about and the problem I think MIles had when someone brought up that he was the black Spider-Man was he didn't want to be black Spider-Man he just wanted to be Spider-Man. So he had a problem when people started referring to him that way.

I've really liked Miles ever since his first appearance, and I've never really understood the criticisms that he's too similar to Peter in the early comics, I think you did a pretty good job debunking those arguments in this video. If there is one thing that bothers me though, is how Miles has been treated both in the comics and in other media post-Secret Wars. I think putting Miles in the 616-universe, but not giving him his own identity (or permanently retiring Peter as Spider-Man) was a mistake. Miles is in many ways Marvel's equivalent to Terry Mcginnis. He's a legacy character that strives to prove that the superhero he has succeeded is not a person, but a title, and that he can be as much of a hero as his predecessor, if not more so. So having Peter still be the 'original' Spider-Man kind of breaks that in my opinion. It means Miles can never claim to be THE Spider-Man, because the original Spider-Man is still there, and no matter what Miles does, he will ALWAYS be second to Peter. He ends up as either "the sidekick" or "the black one", both of which are extremely demeaning to his character. I think the double dipping of putting Miles into the main universe, but also refusing to get rid of Peter just hasn't worked, neither for Peter nor Miles. In the end it lessens both characters. Miles should get his own identity, like Dick Grayson, so he can finally stand on his own and stop being second to someone else. That, or get rid of Peter as Spider-Man, but let's be honest, that's never happening permanently.

I will agree that Miles got a lot more fleshed out in Spider-Verse. It's great to see HIM in the foreground as well. Instead of it being yet another Peter Parker story. Despite multiple Parkers being in it. Miles as great for Diversity's sake. I'd say the same for Kamala Khan. They're great additions. But sadly, a lot of the newer added characters in Marvel, are diverse for the sake of checking a box, and I seriously hate that. Make a character fit, make their personality fit. And don't just shoehorn them in like they've done for a while now.

I think the Spider-Verse Miles is best because in Bendis' original run, Peter and Miles were almost the same. Peter and Miles were pretty much the same and the MCU decided to take inspiration from Miles' few original traits, like being friends with Ganke who was changed to Ned and going to a school for smart kids, for Peter. So when Spider-Verse was being made, they changed Miles and they did a great job. Miles in Spider-Verse feels like a new character because they changed him to be different from MCU Peter who was basically Miles and mad Spider-Verse the best iteration of Miles.

"Whos laughing now, Gene?!" Still your comic book vendor, as Miles is still just a watered down ersatz Peter Parker. @@windghost2 The argument wasn't "dating Gwen Stacey bad" the statement is "Miles is a watered down ersatz version of Peter Parker whose entire existance is a cribbed lamer version of Peters life." If one were to give an honest description of Miles 10 year comic book history the most commonly used phrase would be some version of "like Peter did," because pretty much everything Miles has, is, or does is just a knock off of something Peter Parker either is, has done, or is related to. He fights Peters rogues gallery, hung out with Peters supporting cast, has Peters origins, wears a knock off of Peters costume, has Peters powers, has Peters web shooters (literally the webshooters off Peters wrists), he has Peters alternate universe ex love interest, etc etc. There isn't an original concept in the entire character & the comic sales reflect this reality.

@@matthewlane yea but that’s really only on the comics in the films and games he’s pretty different form Pete also in some of the comics he’s different has not really watered down as he has different ability and uses them differently then how I think Pete would use them he also has a lot of different qualities he’s not as confident and not as smart he’s still not 100% different though but he’s still different. So he is kind of similar it 100% not a watered down version. Another thing in the game is that he isn’t as solo as Pete was he has his friend who helps a lot and Miles attacks a lot more differently also yes he does have a similar suit but it also has his own gimmick to it white more dark colors also every spider man you see already has a very similar suit to Pete as it’s the iconic spider man suit as It has spider gimmicks so that lime doesn’t make as much sense. Also in the game he makes a app for people so he cares a little more about people than Pete and also in the boss fights he fight mor nice and doesn’t want to attack as much. So in my opinion Miles is different and not a watered down Pete but he still has some similarities. Edit: also yea he does use peters tech but like does that really matter either way it would be the exact same thing so it doesn’t matter that much.
@matthewlane
@matthewlane 3 жыл бұрын
@@skeppo3440 "yea but that’s really only on the comics" Which is what we are discussing, that is Miles original contextt. If your best argument for Miles not being a lame watered down version of peter is "well sure, in the all the issues of his book that has been published over a period of 10 years he is completely a lame duck, but in this one movie & also this one video game that they completely rebuilt his character from the ground up he isn't" that isn't really a defense of his character, since they had to rebuild his character from the ground up to make him not the thing he's spent the last 10 years & all his previous issues being.

I don't check a lot of diversity boxes, but as someone work autism, it feels nice when a character is written in a way that resonates with me. Not a lot have done that, but a good few. Edit: I felt the need to research some characters in fiction with Autism/Asperger's Syndrome that I liked, so I'll list a few. Kingdom Come: A crime comic where the main character has Asperger's Syndrome. It mostly does the "mental illness with superpowers!" thing but I also think it does a good job of showing how autism can make you seem detached and yet care very deeply about someone. The Accountant (2016): A good fit for those who want representation in action movies. One of the things that really got to me about the character were the rhythms of the way he did things, and while it's not huge, it felt connective to me, like the filmmakers understood me. Community: Abed is a great example both of how people with autism can act out as well as not realize they're acting out. He's nuanced in a way that's not often explored. While not a lot of characters are ever CONFIRMED to be autistic, a lot of characters really lean into the traits. Pearl and Peridot from Steven Universe, for example, display a lot of traits for autism. And a lot of smart characters in comic books (Ryan Choi or Reed Richards, for examples) have some traits of autism, which I don't hate but are a bit of a stereotype. If anyone reading this has some good examples to share, please do!

Peter comes back and also confirms Miles own doubts by not allowing him to come on the mission, it all just sets up for the perfect storm that especially when followed by the whats up danger scene, MMMMMMMMMM
