What I always liked to do is 'remaking' a skin. Basically, I first think of a cool idea for a skin. Then, after realizing I lack both the skill and time to make one, I download a skin from a random website, and basically re-paint the thing, slowly, into the skin that I have thought of. If you ever want to make an original skin both quickly and with high-quality, this is probably the way to go with.

Taking the many comments into consideration, I'd say that a VAST majority of people who actively play minecraft make their own skin. Skin sites would make you believe that most people wear those depressed looking skins but that simply isn't the case, not even close. Go into a server and you will find a very diverse range of skins. I think that the lack of creativity is from people who actively make skins on these sites, not the actual minecraft player base. So no, skins are not ending, not even close. But the video is great, even if I don't agree with it's point.

I strongly recommend blockbench for custom skins. Even if you don't know how to make skins from scratch, It's a great tool to edit and merge features from various skins to make something unique. My skin is broken down into a set of features on their own texture layer (a face, a scarf, a hat, etc). From there I can mix, match, and edit for the situation I need. If I need to associate with a team or color, I change the scarf hue because it's the most vibrant part of the skin. I'll make variance for each update or a specific setting.

I started playing Minecraft during the "Dark Age" of 2016-2019, and I must say that skin originality was nearly at its peak during that time. Since there were so few players, and the ones who only started playing because the game was popular left, the community was filled with great people (actually interested in the game) who were capable of creating and choosing interesting player skins. But then again, my experience might be different from that of other people: I mostly played creative mode plot worlds and role-play servers at that time, which I know were never very popular.
@levonoxelr5834 Жыл бұрын
I think the "gamery" and other common skins are mostly seen on minigame or quick play servers, since most of the playerbase are teenagers looking for cheap thrills so it's understandable that they just take a quick skin from namemc and slap it on. If you look at places like roleplaying/ worldbuilding servers you'll see players there are really creative with their skins.

@kygigni9 ай бұрын
Partially. I played on a bunch of servers. The people there usually have a skin that isn't seen that often and really fits to them, but they still haven't made it by themselves. We are like 20 people on that server and only three there have a costum skin. I think that many people are scared of people making fun of them if they make a skin and proudly use them, but I can only guess. Maybe these servers were just exceptions and most people really are creative on worldbuilding servers.

My current skin matches my profile picture (same character). When I was 6 years old, I made my first Minecraft skin. Over the years, I continuously edited the skin and added and removed things until I eventually got to the skin and character I use now, one which I am 100% happy with. Minecraft skins were really the first chance I got to play with how I saw myself and is eventually how I found out who I am. They're more than just a pixelated character in a game, they embrace the user and give insight into the person behind the screen.

14 years ago, I found a person with a really interesting skin philosophy: Start with a basic design, shirt pants and face, and add something with every update. So I did that, added a new, thematically fitting bit for every update: 1.0: A set of goggles with the lenses inheriting the color scheme of eyes of ender 1.1: A belt 1.2: A vial of enchanting and healing to the belt 1.3: A leather coat (stole this one from a different skin ngl) 1.4: Emblazoned a creeper face on the coat 1.5: An amulet with a small redstone charm on it 1.6: New shoes and pants (also nicked from a different skin) 1.7: Replaced creeper face with a stylized Thaumaturge's Seal and updated shirt to look woven 1.8: Updated skin format to layer the coat on top of skin, re-adding shirt and pants 1.9: Scar going over one eye, which is now blinded, frayed bottom of coat 1.10: coat stitched up, added trim and rolled up sleeves. Updated hands to actually resemble fists 1.11: Added golden ring to one hand, updated skin texture to be more saturated 1.12: Redid all the colors. Coat is now warmer, and has a smoother gradient. Shoes are now higher. Pants are baggier. 1.13: Redid necklace chain. Redstone charm is now more narrow. 1.14: Added emerald charm to chain, new soles to the shoes, some armor to the right arm. 1.15: Added a vial of honey to the belt, as well as a rolled-up piece of paper. 1.16: Replaced metal belt buckle with a golden piglin belt buckle. 1.17: Merged emerald charm with an amethyst shard. 1.18: Added a bit of sculk to the non-armored arm. 1.19: Removed Sculk, replaced with an embroidered design on clothes and tattoo on skin 1.20: Updated clothes again. Not sure what I'll do for 1.21, but being able to see history on my skin is honestly pretty wild.

Not to be disrespectful but this video really feels like "old good new bad" a lot of the arguments you use to say new skins are unoriginal can also be applied to the older skins. Mob skins: Just mobs Block skins: Just blocks Gamer boy: Copy paste with a little edits KZbinr skin: Copy paste (sometimes with a little edits) For pixel art you even show a skin that you later also show as an example of just a png. The same skin is both good and bad? I agree that there is a decrease in color but even that is not as bad as you say it is, you can still find plenty of colorful skins on the namemc trending section.

this video's making me feel inspired to get back into making minecraft skins again :) it really is a lot of fun, and i don't know why but it feels really rewarding to finish a skin and finally be able to see it on yourself in-game! personal story: i'm really attached to the shovel knight skin i made, because way back when minecraft was around its peak popularity, i decided my "minecraft youtuber gimmick" would be using a diamond shovel as a weapon instead of a sword. i had never even heard of shovel knight at that point, so when i did finally learn of it, i got really excited because of my idea and felt a connection with it right away. i didn't end up making my skin until just a couple years ago (also never ended up being a minecraft youtuber lmao), but to this day i still have no desire to change it because of how personal it feels, with the way that little idea has come full circle in a way! i mostly just wanted to share that story in a place where it's somewhat relevant lol, but i guess the takeaway could be that you don't need to have an original idea to be able to make a meaningful custom minecraft skin? idk lol, either way it's a really fun art form and i hope it doesn't fall out of practice! and of course there's nothing wrong with using a skin someone else made, or even using really popular skins, but it's kinda sad to see how little variety there seems to be on skin hosting sites like namemc.

This is why I like making my own skins in my own style 90% of the time, makes you feel like you do finally stand out among the crowd of pastel girls and onesies

You think the ones in 2012 are original????? what. The dumbass "Hoodie character" thing isn't original at all. Everyone did it. Also, the skins that people upload online do not represent the "Creativity" that people have, because lots of those uploaded skins seem to follow the same rules and such. Log onto servers and whatever else, and you'll see that the lack of originality only applies to these Minecraft skin websites :/ Literally.

I made my skin somewhat based on Slamacow, and somehow ended looking way different

That thumbnail is wrong. Although I hate dream, his skin was originally made by him. That skin on the left was something many people could just download off a website

sometimes I forget I've been playing minecraft for over a decade, and watching videos like this one about things I lived, it surprise me how much has happen in minecraft

I also remember during the DreamSMP era there were a ton of us who made Minecraft OCs (original characters) and built skins based off them, which was an entirely different wave of creativity that was really cool to see. Maybe it was just on the artist side of Minecraft but I definitely made my own original character skin because I saw others doing the same for their own OCs. (and that Minecraft skin is now my art persona -- go figure)

Ngl I cried... I'm still crying actually. The nostalgia rush is crazy. I used a Steve skined growing up but when they introduced the extensions with Scottish Steve and Prisoner Steve and those skins. I would make fake personalities and voices while my brother and I played on the 360 and I would make him laugh.. I miss those old days. Childhood innocence gets ruined and becomes dull as you age. I don't want to forget those memories ever.

You know, when I started playing Minecraft for real back in the day, I actually made my own skin. It was a Steve edit with a bathrobe, pajamas, and black slippers. Later on I ended up making something closer to myself, plad shirt, grey flatcap, as well as that old style of face with 2x2 eyes and no mouth. Over time, I added details, like a robotic arm and such. These days, I'm actually really happy with my skin. I've even started making custom ones when I'm playing with friends, like a robot butler for a server we're doing now, or a steampunk variant I did with a mod pack I used ages ago.

I found this one skin a while back, maybe about… 4-5 years ago? A strawberry cow, I thought it looked cute but the utters didn’t feel right for me, since I’m a boy and wanted to be a little more… relatable? To my skin. So I customized it, removed the utters and added small horns, and it’s been my skin ever since, I even have a suit variant that i wore one time when my friends got fake married in the game

I have been playing on bedrock forever but recently got Java. I used a skin I made all the way back in elementary school, just a little pumpkin guy wearing striped clothes. May not be the most exciting skin ever, but it is still somehow more unique than most skins nowadays.

i made my minecraft skin myself when i was younger and have just updated it over the years, my favorite addition being ram horns as a personal touch because ‘ram’ is my initials and i love it a lot ^-^

I mean, my skin ideas weren’t original, however, I made my own skins to use back in 2013. I still have it and updated. It is still fun to use. Hard to think it is 10 years old now, lol.

11:44 Gotcha, you used a Stardew Valley theme. I'm going insane, I hear these songs everywhere now (thankfully) and I could recognize it anywhere, or anytime.

Mine defines me... Sort of... It's just a hay block head, specific colored arms and legs of a solid color and a chest for a... chest but I overtime updated it to look better like enhancing the hay block, giving my skin clothes and adding a little bit more detail to the hands and feet of my skin

honestly something cool that i feel wasnt touched on are the untapped possibilities of transparent outer layers. right now they are just used for patrern skins or for glasses but i feel they have way more options use than they currently are getting

When I was browsing in PlanetMinecraft, I saw a skin of Ganyu from Genshin (made by Tootsi if you wanna search it), and it was one of the best skins I saw that used transparency on the outer layer Personally, I would like to use transparency on the outer layer, but I'm afraid it won't fare well when you use Minecraft versions and editions that don't support it (such as Bedrock). I'm a person who likes compatibility on their skins, so I hope they'll finally add support for it

Till this very day, after over 12 years playing the game, I still use my own skin which changes according to thing that happen to me alongside friends and/or things that I like. It’s VERY unique and I absolutely love it
