I respectfully disagree on the comment above if this is a topic of national interest. It definitely is and a matter of huge importance . Reason : a vast majority of so called English literate India conflates political leadership and command over English language. Shekhar Gupta wonderfully brings out the difference with clear examples of YB Chavan and Kamraj. This is not about one Mansukh Mandaviya. If we need to mock , let's mock poor leadership and policy decisions , that's the beauty of democracy. We can have fun doing it but mocking just language skills shows the person mocking in poor lights. OUtside India, A lot of east Asian and Western European and south American countries don't measure their leaders or mock for their English skills. That's the elitism that Shekhar wants to call out and I unabashed back him on this.

But its Spoken English he is "Uncomfortable" at. Being uncomfortable with spoken English, or not being able to speak English with impeccable grammatical connotations is not equivalent to not knowing English good enough to read a book. Try using your brain once a while before asking "tough" questions. Have a good day! 😊

I really liked reading your column on this topic. It is not just elitism. It is pure narcissism. It is their "white man's burden". I think there is no secret to Narendra Modi's success and it is a case of the pigeon closing its eyes on the part of his detractors. Today, most of India is well educated (which was once upon a time a luxury). Most BJP voters are well-educated individuals too. Mocking Modi voters is in no way going to help INC. I remember my mother was really offended when the left elite mocked Smriti Irani for not completing her graduation as she herself was forced to abandon her education because of circumstances. The left even though they claim to be for woman empowerment seem not to understand that there are many reasons why a woman would have to abandon her education apart from intelligence. It really pissed her off and honestly pissed me off that these people would assume that a woman in India would not complete her education because she was dumb. My mother in fact couldn't complete her education because corrupt socialist professors in bihar could not find enough money to conduct exams and would declare zero year after zero year as a result of which she had to drop out after like 5 years of a 3 years education (this happened in the early 90s).

None of us are native speakers of English, my grandma doesn’t speak proficient English nor she understands it, but she’ll calculate and tell you the dates of solar and lunar eclipses. The people who are nagging him for his English are the same ones who are against “Hindi imposition”, look at the irony, they are imposing English on him. You don’t have to wear a three piece suits, neck ties and lapel pins to be a good leader. We have 22 official languages and thousands of dialects which are linguistically far superior than English, be proud of them, be proud of what our ancestors have achieved. I do admire the capacity of Modis to turn insults to votes. This should be done by the opposition actually. Rahul Gandhi should be saying 'if insulting my lineage adds two rotis in the plate of a modi supporters, please feel free'. In the long run it will get there. Yes. You said it correctly. Knowledge of English is desired but not a necessity. Being a person who had worked in Gujarat for 4 decades I know that the people of Gujarat is very hard working and they are born achievers. Even though people have achieved academic excellence I have observed that they would prefer to talk in the language most comfortable to them and absolutely it is not a bad thing. Since usage of English is less there may be some mistake s here and there. So people should not be judged by the way they express the language but by their caliber to achieve the things. The person involved in this is a high achiever already and we should leverage his experience.

I remember once Shekar talking about a terror group claiming credit(?) for a terror crime. I was aghast at the usage of credit for a sinister act. Very appropriately put. Language is never the only requirement and this fascination with English has some hint into our colonial history as well. One of the best examples of this is Russia where science, technology and other achievements didn't rely on a language but commitment. Although English is the modern language for globalized issues and situations mostly, an internal minister doesn't need it to justify his competence. Mr. Modi is the greatest example of it! Mansukh Mandavia is a excellent administrator with sharp political acumen. He has risen from humble beginnings to become a cabinet minister at young age. He was the driving force behind the Jan Aushadi stores which have brought good quality medicines in reach of common people. He now has both ministry of health and chemicals and fertilizers.
