Why Modern Writing Sucks, part 3.
Most modern writers are too foolish. They don't seem to realize that the arts are a service industry, and are just all-ego, no service. If you don't consider the customer, then don't be surprised if they take their money elsewhere. When it comes to just general ego or the stupidity of the WGA strikes, too many artists don't give a damn about the audience, and then wonder why they don't make money.

Moral of the story: check your ego at the door. Far too many modern writers overestimate their own worth and don't keep their feet on the ground. Then when their body of work doesn't sell, they just lash out, blaming everyone and everything but themselves. And they never learn how to do customer service or generate buzz for their projects

Tell that to the normies who sympathize with the actors and writer striking because "greedy" corporations refuse to negotiate with them. Anyone in the right, be it the moderate or the dissident right, will say that they won't sympathize with either side of the strike for polluting Western entertainment with progressive ideology and anti-bright (with a "w) rhetoric.

Speaking as a modern writer, I'm confused by the entitlement endemic to the writers' strike. Do they not see the practical problems at all?

To the point you speak to at the start here: Overvaluation of their skills is part of a wider notion amongst modern artists that art shouldn't be a job but instead more like a hobby they get paid for. They look at the talented artists that you mention and then wonder why they're not getting treated the same, discounting the numerous and very serious differences in attitude they both have. If you were working at walmart, would you be asking for a raise every time you stocked the shelves? Or a tip whenever you direct a customer to an item? Obviously not but its the sort of attitude thats permeating modern art. People are begging for affirmation at every turn. They treat themselves like a wizard bottling ethereal knowledge instead of an employee/contractor. Regardless of whether or not people will be tricked into paying it, you do not deserve $200 for a generic, lifeless colored bust. When you're not struggling for your position you end up lazy and less talented than those who do. For background, I'm also an artist and a manager for 7 previous clients (privately commissioned art, not commercial). I do know what i'm talking about. Each one of my prior clients has made a minimum of $5,000 on their commissioned artwork and 2 have gone on to the professional art scene. If you're not working on your art as hard as a mechanic works on a car, and you're asking for way higher margins than they ever would, then you're a fuckup and you need to quit the art scene. Everyone deserves respect but that respect is obviously proportional to how you treat yourself and your job.

It's not impossible to write stuff well even with the ego. Razorfist pumped out two novellas and is working on a black-and-white comic, and HIS EGO REQUIRES ITS OWN ZONING LAWS!

That's true, but there is having an ego and allowing it to consume you. These writers think they are so good, that their writing is so powerful, that you must be evil if you don't like it. I wish that wasn't literal either, but we live in strange times.

A perfect example of Ego instead of Service are easily GhostBusters (2016), The Last of us part 2, I am not StarFire and the I can go on. Those types of Arts are not there to entertain, their just there feed on the creators egos!

As someone who isn't wants to be an artist. I wouldn't price myself for my art. I would rather let someone else decide the pricing instead of me as well as apologize to that soneone for the quality of my artstyle. I don't even have a job. But I do want a job.

You know, I think that hot dog stand metaphor to be very apropos in another way, as far as comics go; most people write comics for a living are doing it because they love the medium. Let's face it comics, especially nowadays, are a niche industry with a set audience and companies are always looking for ways to expand their Ips just so they can afford to keep the lights on. What I'm trying to get at is that the average pay for a comic writer isn't enough to pay the rent, which is why so many of them write on several books at a time. But yeah, some people...are just arrogant and don't consider that, if they're working in a small industry that they need to settle for a modest living. Which...honestly, looks like it'll have to be that way for a lot of writers, sadly. Now, I do feel that writers should be treated better in Hollywood, as many of them were probably overworked during Covid (and even before) because of streaming services demanding content, or just having to deal with producers micromanaging productions and DGAF about the story the crew signed up for (cough Multiverse of Madness cough) . But when it comes to streaming being the way it is? I feel like there may need to be a compromise; either writers accept a flat fee with no residuals, or these services need to produce let content, which will no doubt mean more money that can be spent on each production that's given the greenlight, including more money for the writers room. In terms of comics, though? Yeah, if your goal is to get rich off of writing? Try film. Just know you should be worth your salt if you wanna keep getting work. And for the love of God, keep your fucking mouth shut OR be careful about what you say if you don't wanna get blackballed. That's my two sense on the matter. Please feel free to correct me because I've never worked in comics so I can't imagine I'm 100% correct in what I'm saying, here.
