I taught my children Fiscal responsibility like my parents taught me and my sibling, my children are self sufficient they don't make purchases based on desire, it is based on needs and from time to time affordable luxuries and getaways. I did not raise inmmature Adults and for my Parents I have a Family Building they reside in after they Sold their Home and along with my Parents provide in home care and one of my siblings lives above my Parents Rent Free to assist during our rotational schedules when our Parents are not vacationing with us...

In our countries we joke to our parents during arguments like "we'll put you in old age homes/retirement homes just like Americans or western country peeps" coz that's what people here know about western societies view of old people, here in the many eastern countries most of the kids stay with the parents in old age to take care n giving them company, if there are multiple children then only one stay with their parents, in extreme situations nobody stays with their parents coz of job situations n locations, family issues etc etc so there are multiple types of families. But yes this is the trend nowadays in many parts of the world coz of increase in cost of living but salaries not getting the same increase too, there's so many reasons. It's not always about staying on one's own legs or getting financially independent but since western societies consider it as a weak thing many people have some form of pressure to move out during adult age, which is good in developing a human being but also if moral values are not there then these families get more isolated n fragmented. In one way kids staying with families are good for the benefit of maintaining good bonds but in other hand it can get comfortable n diminish the overall growth of the same kids, so a balance should be attained ie: financially independent but also able to assist their parents in their hour of needs, that's what humans n family stands for isn't it? to be there for each other no matter what. 👍🏼

Yea California people don’t use logic. My dad passed in 2011. My brothers been married for 10 years and moved to Utah 3 years ago. Just me and my mom out here I work full time security on the graveyard shift and with 48 hours and also 8 hours over time coming cause someone left. Barely make enough to get a place. My brother and myself have tried getting our mom to move to Utah but she won’t budge. In asia we live with parents as long as you are single to take care of your granparents or help your parents not send them in a facility taken care by carers. Besides life is short. I dont understant why leaving your parents house is so exciting unless you will be married or live in another place for work. You never know when will you last see your parents.

Fortunately, my parents let me live with them during a period in my 30s. Very grateful to them, it let me save up money to buy a nice house with my wife…besides being able to save a large amount of money, it gave me a decade of quality time with them that I wouldn’t have had otherwise…it’s too bad that society, especially in this country, tries to shame people into not living with their parents even if they are able.

It was tough twenty years ago! Yes, things are more expensive now Of course, but we also didn't get paid near what people get paid today. fast food for example, paid minimum wage and not a penny more. Now they pay double what minimum wage is. you just got to make sacrifices to make it and most young people are not willing to do that. I had to eat can chili and soups for a while! Buy clothes from thrift shops, rent a shitty trailer, drive a pos car but I made it! Now 25 yrs later I have a house on the lake and drive very nice vehicles. All that sacrifice and hard work makes you a better stronger person later in life!

One check was use for rent and the other check was use to pay my electric bill and phone bill food damn I don't even know how I live off of that but I manage. I was raised by Mexican immigrants. When my 18th birthday was approaching and I asked them on advice about moving out, they laughed in my face! They asked me where I got that idea from and when I told them that I got it from my white friends, they laughed again! In our culture, kids can stay with their parents for however long they need as long as they’re not married. Once they’re married, it’s a different story. I have a few aunts and uncles who remained single and they lived with my grandparents up until they died. In fact, it’s been well over a decade since my grandparents passed away and my aunts and uncle still live in my grandparents’ house. The one time my uncle tried to get a place of his own, my grandmother got on her knees and begged him not to leave, where most American parents can’t wait to kick out their kids the moment they turn 18!

I’m over 40 with a Master’s degree in IT living with my parents and I pay them rent and help out. That said, I would much rather have my own place to be fully independent and happier the way I want to be. For me, it’s just economics. I’ve travelled all over the world on all six continents by myself plus have visited all 50 US states, the Caribbean and other places. I like being fully on my own much better.

Not a wild guess, the perfect guess otherwise. Take for example Washington State homes prices has tripled in price from 2015 to 2024, average home in this state is around 390k and not counting mortgage, insurance, and other bullshit fees. To buy a house in Washington, you need a good standing credit score, makes at least 50k a year, and at least 25% down payment, otherwise you will be paying 3k to 5k monthly mortgage bill!!! This is a house with 3 beds, 2 bath 2k sqft on 6k sqft lot. Fucking ridiculous

Being from Florida, how much rent is going is very expensive, even if you have good credit. It definitely be hard living on your own. I had seen people living in a trailer in a Uhaul storage facility because of the price of rent or mortgage. It seems there are many choices: either live with parents, live with other family members, or having roommates. Unless you are very rich, it can be hard regardless on what your career is.

I’m at Biochemist. I graduated with honors from the top University and my first job was in the big city in Denver Colorado. Let me tell you, your comment is not wrong it is 100% correct. We have been struggling to make ends meet and see some sort of traction underneath us Sure I can survive but I either choose to eat and not save or I choose to save and not eat. We don’t really have date night anymore. You need at least 80K to be “okay”. Most employers do 40K. I can’t really have a rainy day fund because I live paycheck to paycheck and I am living in income restricted low income housing. I’m doing everything I can to minimize my Spending we even commute to work together my wife and I and she also has a college degree. But the truth is they are drastically under paying everyone and the cost-of-living keeps going up. She recently got pregnant and I don’t want her to work anymore because this is her first child, and we’ve had issues with fertility, and I would much rather move in with my folks, and save some money, then lose the baby. We leave denver this weekend. I felt like a loser but thinking broadly and more strategically, this would give us time to save money, pay some medical bills down and really rebuilt from the insanity that is currently trying to make it on your own. It’s not even that we are lazy, it’s simply starting to become very impossible.

I am blessed enough where all of them are doing well. My kids are still young. My baby boy is 21 he is in tourism and lives in employee housing, and going on internship with school, my oldest son whom lives in Marietta GA single with a room mate, and my daughter who is 22 works two jobs. My next to oldest son lives with a roommate as he is a single father with 2 kids. As long as my kids are helping THEMSELVES we will definitely help them.

We are living in Denver and things are getting rough…rent is going up, jobs pay little and my wife and I burned through our cash and some of our savings for IVF. She’s 12 weeks pregnant now and we decided to move back home to our folks. She won the coin toss and we’re gonna be with her parents who are empty nesters. I worry about being a major burden. I plan on working more than ever to pay the medical Bills and hopefully use the house more like a hotel than anything else. Plus, my wife gets the peace of mind she needs to relax and have the baby we’ve wanted and I know she’ll be safe with her family during this time. They said we could live rent free and I couldn’t really pass that up, honestly but it does feel like failing when nothing is wrong with you but society doesn’t seem to want to give you a hand. They pay too little, demand a lot and life isn’t worth it.

Okay I’m the past I use to say adults should be out n their own. Now I have changed my mind. I recently moved to Maryland from Texas and I’m so sorry to everyone in Maryland…how do you survive. I have a degree, own a business, prior military and both my husband and I bring in money and it is crazy here. We pay $3,500 a month in rent. I could go on and on but my main point is I’m looking at my teens and if they aren’t going to the military where they will have medical, dental, paid every month and continuous on the job training I’m not sure what they will transition to. I’m 100% okay with them staying home longer with a plan.

Im 56 and rent is recently (March 2024) than 50% of my income…I’m lucky he said yes. But we won’t be lonely my mom died on Thanksgiving morning. There are plenty of people are moving back home today. The cost of living is way too high today. Bare minimum u need to at least make $5000.00 a month to live on your own. Rents, is bare minimum $1500.00 plus more according to what city u live in. An remember to get a apartment it has to be double the income. Plus your car note. Insurance. Inspection for your car which comes out of your pocket. Food, personal needs. Eating bad food will make u very ill. Plus utilities bills co pay health insurance. Gas for your car. An the list goes on an on. I don't blame people 40 plus still living at home. Because u need to built a major bank account today before u more put Because u could definitely lose your job. Especially in this ERA. I left home at 26 years old and for married. But even in my ERA. My husband had two used cars dealerships an a mechanic business and he purchased 3 Large apartments buildings that had to be totally renovated. He renovated one at a time. Once he got the first one completed he did the same for the next two. I live a privilege life. But in this ERA when everything is COLLASPING and every one is losing there jobs. Even all the 99 cents store are closing down on the west Coast. An they are not paying employees no unemployment at all. Even the people who work for the 99 cents store will not be receiving unemployment. Why because the 99 cents store are private and they don't have to pay a dime. They only have to pay there last pay check. So don't be so hard on people who are 40 plus. ALOT OF these people had to move back home. An the ones who live out in there own are having it very hard with both of these INCOMES put together. I love a privilege life but I don't look down on no one at all. I have compassion for people today.

In my area houses are 500,000..townhouses, not single family homes. A 1 bedroom apartment is 2000, last year it was 1725-1793. It's sometimes even more. The income is generally higher here, but if you work a minimum wage job, around 37-40 hours a week, cuz employers don't want to give insurance, after taxes you make 1800 a month after taxes. Likewise, you may work at a place understaffed and end up having only 5-10 minutes to eat, yet the employer may take 30-45 minutes out of your hours each day for your lunch..and that adds up, so you may be working 40 hours a week, but only get paid for 37 hours at these minimum wage jobs b/c the employer takes time out of your lunch, even if you only have very little time to eat. Not to mention employers at minimum wage jobs typically do not give paid sick leave or if the place is closed on holidays. Given that you"re net pay might amount to 1750 a month. Gas and food prices are insane and insurance and education costs are through the roof. It's quite literally impossible to make it. Here in this wealthy county, only the ones with money can make it, but for the minimum wage workers, they cannot make it. Before the pandemic the minimum wage was 11 an hour. I worked at this one place when I was living on my own, that would only schedule you 34 hours a week, but you're schedule and hours would change every week, that it would be difficult taking an additional job that does the same thing;changing your hours and schedule each week. You wouldn't know you're schedule until a week in advance..som minimum wage jobs I worked you didn't know you're schedule for the week until the day before the start of that work week. I don't drive, so just kept to that job. Well anyways, they would take 40 minutes out of our day for lunch when many of me and my coworkers would sometimes not start out lunch break until later, yet still have to be back on shift after only having 10-15 minutes to eat or sometimes less. Sometimes if it wasn't busy, they would send people home early. I worked nearly 34 hours, but got paid for only around 30 hours a week because they would take time out for lunch when I sometimes barely got a lunch, especially of it got busy or a bunch of customers came in. There was also no vacation time, no insurance, no paid sick leave, yet you would be scolded or written up if you called out sick. You get 3 strikes and if you call out the day of even if you're really sick, they would write you up. The turnover rate was high except for the bosses favorites.

To add to that, they would sometimes schedule/ have too many people come in and then just send some people home who've only been at work an hour. They indicated it wasn't busy enough. This happened atleast 2-3 times a month. It really annoyed me because I commute by public transit and it can take long and not to mention it costs. Now the busses are currently free here, but before that it was $2 dollars to get on the bus which would be added to your smart trip card. The $2 only lasted 2 hours and you could transfer during that time, but if you had work, you would have to pay another $2 to get home. $4 a day doesn't sound like much, but when you're at work 5 days a week, it adds up. Luckily, there was a $40 a month pass you could get, but it only was valid for the busses, not metro. However, that pass was not advertised much, so many people didn't know about it. For work some weeks were really slow, so sometimes you could be given less hours that week. I rented a small room in a rundown house that charged 790 a month (utilities included) when I was making only around $1075 after taxes depending how busy or slow business was. After paying rent($790), the bus pass ($40), my phone bill ($40), pads/tampons each month ($7), medications (i.e naseau medications, motrin, etc., occasionally allergy medication $11), chocalate ($3), shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, dish soap, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper which added up. And also treating myself to only one meal and dessert out once a month ($15), I had only $150 left. I kept my groceries at $80 a month, albeit I don't eat much. After all of that, I would only have $70 left. I didn't have netflix, I didn't have UberEats or food delivery services, I didn't go to nail salons; never been to one, I didn't go to the movies, I didn't get my haircut; I hadn't had one in 10 years at that point and just cut my own hair, I hadn't seen a dentist for 11 years, I didn't buy new clothes, I didn't buy jewelry, I never took vacations; only a couple times when I was a kid, the phone I had bought was a used android phone for $45; I didn't buy a fancy expensive I-phone.. Sorry for ranting, but I think people don't understand how with minimum wage work, there is no paid sick leave or insurance, there is no vacations, there is no schedule flexibility or promotions, and after taxes you make so little, not to mention employers will cheat you and try to cut out time for your lunch break when you barely had one, you're on your feet all day, and if you don't have friends or connections or financial stability, an emergency can be the difference between being on the streets, or not eating. And people talk about services people can access, but often times, it can take awhile until stuff are approved and when you're poor and live paycheck to paycheck you don't have a while. If you work minimum wage and have a medical emergency and are out of work a week or god forbid more, there is no sick pay and some employers will penalize employees, by cutting their hours when they return to work...God forbid that employee gets sick or has a loss in their family. I just have horrible stories personal and witnessing awful incidences of callousness towards employees. What irks me the most is people who say well then just don't eat out ever, even if only ever treat yourself to a meal out once a month. Like that $10-15 meal will make a difference..like $10-15 a month will really make a difference. My one treat was getting a meal out once a month. I guess if you're poor they assume you should never treat yourself; never get yourself a cup of coffee, or a ice-cream, or a pizza, etc. Mind you these ultra rich treat themselves to lavish meals, luxurious vacations, expensive cars, the next designer watch, frivolous purchases, etc. When the pandemic hit and I lost my work, I tried to stay a float, but eventually couldn't and had to move back in for a couple months. I was so embarrassed and felt like a failure, so as soon as I started working again I moved back out. Even though minimum wage has went up, it hasn't kept up witn the cost of housing or food. Then last year, I had a realization: it doesn't matter what people who don't understand think. I ended up staying home as a family member had a medical emergency and would need care and although, they're better now, I decided to stay at home, so I can work and go back to school without the stress of the insane costs of living. But yeah, sorry for the rant..I'm just tired of people making judgements, comparisons, and criticism when they make enough and are far away from the realities of being poor in a society that keeps getting more unaffordable. I wish rich people could live these realities for a year or even a month or two

Lived at home until I was 28. Owned my older model car, paid it off when I was 22. Left college after three years of JC (Free then) Got my Associates Degree but did not attend university having already seen the devaluation of the college degree through people I was working with. Did work several blue collar jobs before settling in to an entry level position in medical billing at 26 that paid off. No job interviewer can legally ask you if you live with your parents including your age (your resume shows your accurate dob) because it has nothing to do with whether or not you qualify, have experience or skills for the job. High turn around jobs are: fast food restaurant, slow food restaurant, and school staff. Seasonal jobs are also hiring as well. You can always check with workforce development or human resources to find out what your options off in reference to job offerings. If you want to get hired quickly, get a language book from the library and learn how to speak Spanish or any other language and you should get hired right away if eligible and qualified for the job.

I dont why this is seen as bad, the only reason living with your parents is bad if you have an awful relationship with them or you a bum who doesn't pay anything or do anything. Other than that it is literally the smartest thing to do for both yourself and your parents if you ain't married and got kids. I mean ppl rather move out and pay someone elses mortgage instead of your parents and you pay double the amount, taking double the amount of time to do things in your life. Its okay to move with roommates and not your parents?

I’m the youngest of three brothers. My two older brothers went to live together so as not to depend on our parents and because it was the quickest way to do it as soon as possible. I hope to do the same when I finish my studies and get a girlfriend. It’s simple. Independence isn't accessible to everyone.

Not because it was easy, but because every since my Brazilian second mother became a part of the family I resolved to move to Brazil and retire. When my father passed at 99 we honored his only request that we take care of his wife and we brought her back to her homeland. Was it easy, Were there challenges, Was it was accessible. NO, but we had the RESOLVE to do it.😎

Same here. When we got pregnant though, I told him I'm moving out with or without him. And if it's without then he should expect divorce papers in the mail. No way was I going to raise a baby with a verbally abusive and overbearing father-in-law in the house.

My husband is 41, senior manager, living with his mom. You will go broke if you keep renting in California. I will live at my in laws soon. I have a home-based job. I will take care of her aging mom. This is how we save money. Just 1 car because I don't need it.

(FACTS OVA FEELINGS) Wen ppl live with their parents it can cause them to revert to the belief that just like in childhood they r unable to change negative conditions and stressors in their life the thing is they aren't actually a child anymore nor r they actually in the same situation they actually cud change it now but being around their parents causes conditional powerlessness to kick in

26 - 41 Living with you're parents is "Normal" in California!!! Rent and Home Owner ship in CA is ridiculous!! I am saving for a house CASH before I move out of my parents house and I give them Rent money. Rather give Rent money to your family than some greedy apartment owner.

The thing with adults living at home, everyone has to do their part. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. I see to often where many adults moving home, do not want to abide by their parents rules, and that is where having a full grown adult living at home becomes a problem. So tootles to the RESPONSIBLE grown adults that want to help and follow the house rules. I lived at home til I was 24. While I loved being home, I personally enjoyed and was able to gain money smarts by living on my own. I have no debt, I do not live off credit cards, I do have a room mate whom is my sister, and it works for us perfectly. At close to 30 you should have a financial plan for sure to prepare for a place of your own. I can see someone 18 out of high school or in college, living home ,but 25 and up responsibility is a must, even if you are still living home, and especially if you have kids.

I’m 28 and i had a house for two months but the bills were to hard to do on my own and i got very lonely, that’s my reason i do plan on moving out again (with a roommate) eventually

If you’re in your 40’s and your old, stay with your parents. They’re old and you never know when they’ll need you. I don’t necessarily mean free load, but pay the bills. And take care of them. Nothing wrong with that.
