Communicate with the other parents. If there are older kids in the house, best not to have a sleepover. You can suggest a half night: show up in pjs, do all the sleepover fun stuff, leave at 11pm and sleep in your own bed.

No sleepover at our house either. That’s how my parents raised us and I turned out just fine. As a millennial I’m shocked how many of my peers have experience molestation as kids. The idea of sleepovers sounds fun, but I remember the ones I went to as a kid and without fail drama would always arise and a girl would end up sobbing in the bathroom. There was one time I was ready to stand vigil because my friends were conspiring to draw on my little sister's face while she was sleeping. Thankfully I warned them off. Oh, and Truth or Dare would also lead to some very weird and dangerous crap that I'm not even going to mention. So yeah, I'd be that mean mom that cans sleepovers.

Junk goes on at upper elementary sleepovers. I got caught in some awkward situations when the parents tried to play an R rated movie and I didn’t want to watch it. And one time all the girls wanted to walk in a bad neighborhood. I was the only child who stayed behind. One of my friends moms was on the city council and turned out arrested for drugs. You think you know where your kids are but you don’t always.

My kids had sleepovers on their birthday every year at our house when they were in elementary school. They are now 36 and 34 and always talk about the fun they had. I rarely let them go to anyone's house overnight. Today in 2023 they would not have a sleepover at my house or go to anyone's home. Times have changed too much.

The only kids I knew who weren't allowed to go to sleepovers were the ones whose parents were recent immigrants. It wasn't part of their culture so fair enough, but we definitely didn't understand that as little kids. (these same kids who weren't allowed to go to school outings or dances or even hang out at the mall... they all turned out fine but I just don't see the point in depriving your kids of harmless fun)

Idk there are a lot of different factors at play. But overall I think there's something about a sleepover that felt like productive fun, like, lots to do and get through (dinner, change into PJs, watch a movie, play a video game, brush teeth, lay out sleeping bags and pillows, tell ghost stories until someone has to move their sleeping bag to the middle, wake up and do all the hygiene stuff, eat breakfast (or on a special sleep over, load into a car to grab fast food breakfast), play more videogames or do hwk, and everyone out by 11 (which really means 10 if you were reasonable)). I actually think that sleepovers prepare kids for work more than actual school these days- along that bite, should all colleges be Montessoris?

I feel bad for the kids who have never had sleepovers. when they go to college...these parents are basically conditioning their kids to only feel safe to sleep only when their mommy/daddy are in the next room. This method I think will just lead to a bunch of kids going to grow up with severe separation anxiety.

It’s more of a question of the parents than the kids. Are my kids going to be exposed to poor virtue? That’s the bottom line for me an would be the basis of my decision. I don’t think it’s anything new. Parents would base their decision on this when I was younger they just didn’t come out and say it. There are some households I would have probably been better for not staying at. In hindsight I get it now.
