Dear Dr. Ramesh, your videos are increasingly relevant and most inspiring every time I watch them! I feel very grateful for how it helps my job as a Data Translator trying to transform different types of data into actionable insights for line managers and executives. I couldn't agree more when I see that most organizations are still in the 20th century using old process models, while Data Science and IA tools could rapidly take them to the next level, provided they first change their mindset to data-driven decisions, and understand all the potential if they re-think their own processes models. This video shows very elegantly this struggle.

My introduction to architecture modeling in 1990's began with the IDEF modeling Techniques. These techniques provided the distinction between activity modeling (IDEF0), process modeling (IDEF3), and data modeling (IDEF3). The structured activity modeling approach, IDEF0, provided for a hierarchical breakdown of activities, answering the question of what do I do, AND, depicted the inputs, controls, outputs and mechanisms. Your video reflects how I used to use that modeling technique. Activities in the hierarchy, let's say 3-4 levels down, would ultimately be explored by using a number of diagram types to best understand and capture what the business does. Looking back at some of these original modeling techniques may provide a way of addressing what you have pointed out in your video. Well done and I look forward to more of your doodles!

Thanks John. Yes I think there have been many forms of modeling but somehow current process modeling does not allow the flexibility to leverage any of those or borrow modeling concepts from other disciplines.

I can't agree more on this with you. What do you think about modelling the business process with tools like process mining & task mining. They give us visibility to our business processes as they flow in the ERP and the manual steps as well.

Good to start listing the activities required for a start. To flow and connect them however remains a challenge as correctly stated that not all activities in a process is sequential. Business however need to own their processes and they need guidance modeling processes that is not junk. Therein the problem that needs to be solved. Great video.

Not all activities are sequential. Some are consequential, depending upon the outcome of one of the sequence steps. Then it loops back into the sequence or trails off to its own end. When you look at an abstract of what is a vehicle, it contains many systems that operate independently but interconnect via the user. Ever notice your radio volume goes up the faster your speed? Thats consequential, and pretty cool.

I have question..so does process modelling serve the same purpose as VSM?
@RajRamesh

Processes are generally modeled at a much lower level than value streams.

Dr. Raj: Do you recommend any website or book for the detailed information on the process modelling?
@RajRamesh
@RajRamesh Жыл бұрын
This is a tough one because I believe there is no single way to model a process, unlike what you might find in books. Books on BPMN or BPM or the tools that you might use to model processes are very prescriptive. I find that business people need to understand the intent of the process so they can help in improving them. With this in mind I'd created a video quite some time back that you might find interesting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqvden6FhJ6ekLc
