@d0r0ga that is correct. doesn't take very long for the blood to start to clot. That's why EMTs need to know how long a person has been suspended for in order to rescue them properly. They make different harnesses which help reduce this risk but most are like what you saw in the video

I think that you would be surprised how many companies, in general, rent the equipment. They don't have the upfront cash cost (or loan), they don't have to maintain it, and if it's not something they use every single day on the job, they're not worried about the opportunity cost of equipment they have but aren't using. Stump grinders are a big commercial rental thing - they build up a bunch of clients that need grinding then rent for a few days and bang them out. Go back to their regular stuff for a few weeks and do it again. It's not a bad business model and they build it into the cost they charge - which may actually save money because they can always have the exact equipment needed without having a garage full of stuff they aren't always using.

Two _key_ points about using a boom lift. #1 keep your feet on the floor! They have standard fall PREVENTION in the form of a toe board, mid and upper rails. Its hard to fall out of these unless you start climbing on the rails. #2 every lift will have a maximum HEIGHT and maximum RADIUS. Just because you rented a 120 foot boom lift doesn't mean it will extend horizontally 120 feet (those ones usually have an 80 foot max radius) The little electric tow behind lifts are great, but for general house stuff you need to park pretty close to the house because their radius is small Self propelled lifts are also pretty heavy with a 40 footer clocking in at 28,000 pounds. Make sure whatever you drive on can withstand that

One massive thing left out of the safety aspect.. If you fall out of the basket with the harness on, you have as little as 8 minutes to get rescued before suspension trauma can kill you. Someone should always be nearby and be familiar with how to use the controls on the base of the unit so they can lower you down if you do fall out of the basket. You should pin this in the name of safety..

Great video - also rented a telescoping boom lift to install a Starlink dish (but on the top gable of a 3 story house). One day rental fee was surprisingly reasonable and they even let me keep it overnight. The lift itself was able to reach 35 or 40 feet and was the tow-behind type. It was all electric with a battery pack, so it was completely quiet. After I finished with the Starlink dish, I cleaned out my gutters.

Rented a 35’ tow lift to trim some hedges between our home and the neighbor. He went in half to use it to paint the trim around his roof. Ground was too soft on the rear and the west side so that didn’t go too well but he did get some done! And the hedges got 15’ trimmed off and looked great! Ha! I just used a boom lift to cut on a huge pecan tree right beside my house! You know just how worrisome those trees are with all the little limbs they're constantly dropping!! Lemme tell you, I haven't had so much fun as I did that day! The tow-behind lift was a bit of a pain because you have to unhitch it from your vehicle or it'll lift your ride up when it goes through the self-leveling process. Really aggravating when you then have to move the lift 10' just to get to another spot and take down another limb. Still, so very worth it and I recommend it to everyone. For the money, it's super simple and safe. The one thing I recommend you do before you get it, though, is to watch a slew of videos from arborists here on KZbin. You really need to study up on how limbs tend to fall when you cut them, or you're asking for trouble. Learned that lesson the hard way! Something as simple as roping the limbs so they don't just crash to the ground is easy enough for anyone to do. That, and trying your saws to a leash so you can hang them over the side of the bucket while you're doing other things. Way way better than simply putting them on the deck of the bucket where they're underfoot and cause you to stumble. Invest in a few good carabiner and some decent nylon/polyester rope, and you'll be set. It's real easy and takes a load off your mind.

Here is the test, my wife comes in the house after using the Hose link and says "that new hose is way better than the other one". Talk about an unbiased review. Not sure why you recommended not using with large tree limbs. Thats why I would rent one, to take down some trees, AND some pruning. Never used one before, and have considered purchasing a used truck with a boom and then selling when done. Concerned about how off- level property the machine can handle with the outriggers. Just had a neighbor hire an arborist for about 5 hours. Total cost $3000.

5:18 -- You made a major mistake here. If you're doing tree work, NEVER drive your vehicles over the "fall line." The fall line is a circle around the tree's trunk with a radiua of several feet where most of its leaves fall down. This is also where the tree's most important roots are. In other words, where a tree's leaves fall on the ground is where its roots are. For many trees (especially oaks), when a vehicle is driven over the fall line, even once, the root system is permanently damaged. This will quickly lead to the decay and death of the tree... a tragedy if it is a large and beautiful tree. This is why many jobsites have fencing around important trees: the fencing discourages vehicles from driving across the fall line.

@@SilverCymbal Yes, tree work estimates are all over the place and frequently ridiculous. Across the road from me on a very large tree removal project, my neighbor had estimates from $2,800 up to $13,000 on the exact same tree (no typo there) . I do as much as I can with a fisher, manual pole saw for higher limbs and an ego electric chainsaw for lower limbs (no more than 4 steps up on a ladder as I'm safety conscious) . I also have a Stihl mini saw. That thing is amazing for limbs a bit too large for the pruners, and they are incredibly well designed. I'm actually addicted to using it. lol. I didn't grow up using any heavy machinery, so lifts have been daunting for me to consider, so I appreciate this video. I'll have to give one a try sometime. Definitely get the kind of lift that you can drive around. We just rented a tow-behind lift from United Rentals to do a lot of work, and it was an absolutely nightmare having to attach it to the truck, move it 20', and then unhitch it again. They'd told us it could remain attached to the truck when we rented it, but that wasn't the case since you have to engage the self-leveling feature before you could use the lift. As soon as we did that, it tried to lift the truck up more than a foot. Putting that much strain on the trailer hitch and ball just didn't seem like the right thing to do. Plus, if you're cutting down limbs it puts your vehicle right in the work zone where an errant branch can poke holes in it. Again, not a good thing. That said, even with the problem of having to hitch and unhitch every 20' just to move 20', we got so much work done that it wasn't even funny. That lift made things so much easier and safer.... it's just impossible to describe. Yes, you will be nervous. That's very high up, and the platform will wiggle around. The key is just remembering that you're in a contraption that is designed to be super-duper safe, built overkill, and gets used regularly on thousands of jobsites without issue. You'll be okay. Plus, once you get kind of used to the thing, it's tremendously fun! I'm looking at renting another one just so I can do more tree work around the home.

I have occasionally considered renting a lift or scaffolding and this reminds me that I should at least contact one of the local places and see how easy it would be. One place is just a mile away. In the mean time I've focused on making my ladder much more stable. I wish it came standard, but it was worth the surgery I had to do on my ladder to install Werner's PK80-2 automatic leveler. That combined with a stabilizer that widens the ladder helped me comfortably paint my two story house by hand.
@threeriversforge1997
@threeriversforge1997 4 ай бұрын
We just rented one here. I was surprised how easy it was. So much better than using a ladder. The only thing I recommend is getting the kind that's self-driving so you don't have to keep hitching and unhitching it to your truck.. That was a huge pain in the butt and really ate into how much we were able to get done. Operating the lift was intuitive, and it always felt very safe even when I was 40' up in the air. It's a unique experience, to be sure, but you get used to it and then start really enjoying it. Another thing I'd recommend is taking up some kind of seat so you can kick back and relax for a few minutes when you need it. Standing isn't a problem, but there are times when you kind of just want to take a load off and think about the next step. Even a 5-gallon bucket with a lid, something that you can stow your little tools in, or a drink and sandwich, will make all the difference in the world.

I am not a fan of scissor lifts, I like the outriggers, scissor lifts have heavy bases but are too scary since folks will drive them while airborn, run over even a hammer with a little overload and it can be a tragedy. Not sure if we will ever know the details but unless they were in a garage, a scissor lift has no place on anything other than flat concrete.

Scaffolding is only good against a building. I don't know that I'd want it out in the open to trim a tall tree. The boom seems so much safer.

I think the HOA should have one of these that homeowners can borrow, our HOA lets everyone use their delivery truck to move in/out. I would suspect that most homeowners can not afford to rent one of these for the weekend.

I found the same thing, cost is just way out of sight for something like what’s shown in the video. Rental costs around here are over $500 per day plus tax, , insurance, and don’t forget about delivery which is around $400. Doesn’t make sense

@ksw501 same here. $500 per day and $400 delivery each way ($800 total). Rental place does not provide a trailer for them that you can hook up to, you have to supply your own trailer that they approve of, which of course they approve very few so they can deliver it for you. Oh yeah, you can't rent the appropriate trailer from them either. F'n thieves.

we have a blue spruce in the backyard, we call him bruce, the spruce, he is higher than our two-story house, would one of these lifts work as a way to put Christmas lights on the tree? I would think it would still be difficult, because the lift goes vertical, and does not go horizontal. 0:13
@threeriversforge1997
@threeriversforge1997 4 ай бұрын
It'll work. You've got a tremendous amount of reach with how the things articulate. The straight "horizontal" reach is as long as the boom section directly attached to the bucket, which isn't that much. Maybe 12'. But when you're close to the tree, you'll be able to reach all of the side you're parked in front of. Then you'd have to reposition the lift to the other side of the trunk.

the problem is that they are literally a f'in rip off in my opinion. Well over $500 a day. Like $500 plus for the lift and another $300 for delivery and pickup and also taxes so literally like $1000 for a day and more days are get a little cheaper. However if you rent on a friday i have found they make you take it for the entire weekend.

Sometimes safety nazis' just need to shut up. Sometimes they just parrot BS they know nothing about. I've worked in commercial construction almost my entire life and have operated countless lifts. The safety harness is only there for people who don't know how to operate one, extend it to almost full height, then "po-go" themselves out of the basket from a hypersensitive machine, or in most cases, the operator is wearing the harness because they still need to climb out of the basket to access their work. This is the real reason why construction sites require harnesses while operating a lift. Not from lifts tipping over but from falling construction workers from structure AFTER leaving the basket. A harness won't help you if the machine tips over. In fact, they prevent you from being able to bail out of the basket if you need to. So for theses reason, I don't wear a harness unless I'm climbing out of the basket or it is required. BTW, I won't tell anyone you didn't have the harness on correctly. If you would have needed the harness to save you it would have slipped right off because you forgot to step into the leg straps. You would have been forced to hold yourself from falling with your arms only. How long can you hang in mid air from just your hand strength grip? If you're the average Joe, Maybe 30 seconds? Not long enough to help. So essentially the harness was just a nuisance that didn't make you any safer and only took up valuable time fooling with it. Homeowners do no need a harness to operate a lift. This is why the rental company doesn't' supply one unless you ask. They supplied everything you needed. A much better safety tip is to have someone working with you on the ground. That way they can look out for power lines and pot holes that you WILL miss from your higher perspective, (2 of the real dangers of working from a lift that can kill you) and if the machine breaks down they can lower the boom from the ground controls on the side of the machine. You should have shown everyone the secondary controls as they all have them. Rental lifts breaks down. Don't get stuck.

YES, YOU need a ticket up to 11 meters, and above 11 meters requires a bigger ticket. BUDDY you also need a chainsaw ticket and pruning trees requires arbor culture experience using a chainsaw and correct pruning techniques you can kill the tree or cause a branch or a limb to fail or get hung up and damage the machine or the legs of the machine puncture the roof $$$ home etc and yes public liability if you do not know how to self rescue your self if the machine stops operating in mid-air who will save you and how long will you be up there for also have water and a phone and a ground person to help and assist you. If you fall hanging in your harness you will have a suspension harness which is when your heart pumps blood and floods your body. and if any damages occur insurance will not cover you as you have no ewp license and no public liability insurance. So please do employ a professional as it's not worth the two cents you save on your life

But it's part of the cost of doing your own work. It's $800 to have a tree trimmed, or I can rent the lift for $200 and do it myself. I'm still saving money. DIY isn't always free. It's just less expensive (or better, or whatever benefit you're seeking) than hiring it out.

Hole in roof of house and could of killed himself....so if you don't know what you're doing pay a professional.

I live on the Chicagoland area and rented one of these for around $350 delivered. I'm afraid of heights and also recommend starting at 10 ft and incrementally gaining confidence by increasing the height gradually. After an hour I was able to knock out some painting, installed some security lights and cameras, killed the mold on our roof, Inspected our siding and gables. Simply, it's the best investment in both time and project savings with safety in mind. No different than renting a U-Haul. If you have some fellow diyer neighbors, you could split the cost if you have the time.🍻 🎃
