Metro that is being built in many cities in India have one thing in common that is most of metro lines in india are built of via duct bridges and not underground through tunnels. so why is it so that Metros in india mostly elevates and not underground.
Elevated metro is cheaper than underground anyday. There are cable ducts/sewage lines/building foundations underground that are hard to get around, also the curves can only be so tight with the underground construction. Once built, the expansion, such as, adding a third line/making platforms longer/any other miscellaneous construction is very hard. All the metro constructions in india are new and hence have to use boring machine
They are really really expensive to build. Tunneling is expensive. If you`re in a rocky environment, they`re impractical
Getting people to track level poses some serious accessibility issues.
Urban rail transit in India plays an important role in intracity transportation in the major cities which are highly populated. It consists of rapid transit, suburban rail, monorail and tram systems. According to a report published in 2021, a total of 2.63 billion people travelled annually in metro systems across India's fifteen major cities, placing the country as one of the busiest urban rapid transit hubs in the world in terms of ridership.

In India, every line is mix of elevated + Underground section. They go underground when the area is densely populated & building elevated will result in lanes becoming narrower or when they don't want to mess up with the look of beautiful area.

That's not true at all. In Delhi, green line and red line are totally elevated even in densely populated areas like East Delhi. While metro lines in South Delhi are underground in many sections. It has more to do with the cost of acquiring land.

More important question is. Why do western countries do it underground. Metro systems started in the 1900s. It was a new thing. It was basically train. And people didn't want trains going through their neighborhoods. They thought train lines are ugly. And train tracks make the crossing harder. And divides the city into pieces. And back then, bridges were a HUGE deal. Every bridge was a great architectural project. So building entire viaducts was hard to do. Any abve ground train had to be flat on ground. So tunnels were the options that made the most sense. Especially with cut and cover methods. There are already main roads, they just add another layer below that. And over time, people got used to it. And metros being underground was the norm. So they always did it that way, even when the situations and technologies changed. India is new to this and has a new perspective. We can weigh the pros and cons. And decide what's best for the situation instead of blindly following what people before us did...

@phs125
@phs125 Жыл бұрын
@@Zl4138 bridges are a lot cheaper now. Because of the technology we use. Iron and cement are mass produced heavily, Just need to fabricate it. We have cranes and heavy vehicles which can help transport entire pieces of bridges into site and assemble quickly. Which means they can fabricate the giant pieces somewhere outside the city. Where land is cheaper. And the fabrication method makes it quicker and less intrusive to the public. Building long viaducts is extremely easy now , compared to a hundred years ago. The cost of tunnels hasn't decreased significantly, So viaducts make a lot more sense today. But in western countries, they think viaducts are ugly, and people don't want to live near such things. Which harms the city. And land is a lot more expensive there. So land acquisition gets more expensive too. So even though tunnels are more expensive, it's the reasonable choice in western countries because of inertia

To be completely honest only 9 urban areas in India need metro rail transit. 1. Mumbai Metropolitan Region 2. Delhi NCR 3. Bengaluru 4. Kolkata - Haora 5. Hyderabad - Secunderabad 6. Chennai 7. Ahmedabad - Gandhinagar 8. Pune - Pimpri Chinchwad 9. Surat Full focus should have been on completing corridors in these urban areas first. Or, for tier 2 and 3 cities Metro Neo can be a good option. another thing against tunnels is that you cannot increase the loading guage or change the electrification method (3rd rail to OHE). This can be seen in the London metro, Glasgow metro and Washington DC metro. They need to order special trains to fit their weird loading guages as it is too expensive to increase the tunnel bore

Rail gauge had been standardized across the world now. Any tunnel built over the last 40-50 years should not need any modification other then maintenance. So, it should not be an issue at all. Also, why would there be a need to change from 3rd rail to over head wire and vice-versa. What benefit would it serve for the switchover other then humongous cost in terms of electrification and rolling stock overhaul. Why would someone do that?
@abhigyanghosh9330

@@jyotiranjandas7058 3rd rail is DC while OHE is usually AC. That is one reason if you want to switch electrification methods. If let's say you have a non standard guage metro network (like in Kolkata), then it is difficult to change if it is a tunnel.

Another point you should mention about Underground metro. In any city, whether the line is underground or elevated, if it comes near airport, it always made underground, as elevated metro causes issue in flight operation. May be, it's in Delhi... In Magenta line, only one station: Terminal 1 IGI airport is underground between two elevated sections. Airport Express line has also made underground when the line reaches near Airport. In Lucknow also, the airport station is underground, then the next station built is elevated. In Kolkata, the New Garia- Airport under-construction metro is being made in such a way, only Airport station will be underground. Rest of the 34 km section will be elevated.

We have lived through the early 90s when Metro work was going on in Kolkata. The sort of traffic jams we had at that time due to half of the road being blocked was nothing sort of hell. I don't suppose any city, in today time, will go for such work any more.

@@nsevv exactly half the reason why mumbai local is so bad because it doesn't have afc gates for entry. Make the entry systems like metro and see the difference in crowd and civil behavior of people. Currently they are running then like jokers in a circus no planning nothing. 🤧 That transport is not suitable even for cattle let alone humans.

EMU is a train propelling technology that can be used on anything; a metro is a kind of service. You can have EMU trains (or technically even coal/steam trains) running overground, underground, etc., but what kind of service do they provide? Within neighbourhoods? It's a light rail. Across the city? It's a metro. Suburbs to city? It's a commuter rail. Between cities? It's medium rail. Between states/long distances? It's long-distance / heavy rail.

Viaduct ruins the green cover of a city and also is an eyeshore. Its good for rain harvesting, but it also creates dark zone and ruins the look. Also, I feel the viaducts in Indian cities do not gel well with the surroundings and gives a more of a cyberpunk feel to it.. I like the Japanese viaducts, minimalist straight and slim columns.

The main reason ,politician/bureaucrats dont get any thing if its built underground .Cost is almost the same .To the contrary is cheaper and fast.There are only 2 -3 companies that bid for underground tunneling system and have technology(NATM ). All these companies have no bribe policy.Where as the bridges or upper can be made by many companies and there a lot of contractors .That means a lot of money. You will observe in most of the countries irrespective of topology and soil you will find most the metro is underground.These are built 20 to 60 mt deep and are used for wiring ,internet and can be treated as bunker..From Europe us africa ,in almost countries ,you will find it underground.Also the maintainace of Bridges are highers(rubber Bearing replacement) after 10-15 yrs of life...In london ,they have built 3 -5 levels of station .This not possible by bridge on top of other. PS* I have actually travelled in different metro all around the world

I used to hate Kolkata as a city but now that I have visited all major cities in India, I realised that all cities are ill planned shitholes with no proper planning for garbage collection, sewage, water logging etc. No indian city enforces garbage separation at collection. Electrical wiring is not underground in most cities and neither is gas supply. Water logging is a constant in all Indian cities. All Indian cities have bad AQI and tap water is un-drinkable! Even a tier-2 European city is more developed than any tier 1 indian city.

duh, nope. Underground Metros are comparatively cost efficient and easier to maintain and more beneficial than elevated metro's in the long run. Countries that opt for elevated metros are those that are financially stricken and have no concrete infrastructure in place. However, elevated metros make the most sense for a country like India.
