While much has changed in Calgary since making this video and we no longer recommend people move here, this does explain some of the reasons it was a cool place to live. As someone mentioned, we did not mention the cons so we are making a video dedicated to that shortly.
In this video about life in Calgary, we share the reasons we love it and the reasons why so many people from Canada and around the world are moving to this western Canadian city. Is it because it has been ranked as having one of the highest quality-of-life indexes in the world? How about being ranked the cleanest city in the world?
Partnering with RelocateLTD, we dive into what we think makes Calgary such an incredible city to live in and HOW YOU can immigrate to Canada or to Calgary specifically.

Times have changed and I'm not sure we would totally recommend moving to Calgary. It’s now the third most expensive city in Canada. However, with the boom and bust that the city is known for, there's a high chance it could collapse like it did in 2008. However, rents have gone up by 25% in one year and there's almost nothing on the market. You'd need a salary of $150K just to buy a basic townhouse. When we get a moment, we'll try and do a part 2 because this is really getting insane and the government continues to make it worse.

My partner and I live in Winnipeg. He grew up here and I moved here 16 yrs ago from Vancouver (for the cost of living). We are on the cusp of closing on a purchase of a townhome in Lakeview near the Glenmore Reservoir. I will miss my cabin on Lake Winnipeg, but we cannot wait to relocate to our new Calgary home in 2 years! I’m excited to SUP down the river :)

@@MustDoCanada We are leaving because we want more outdoor options and a good international airport for travel after we retire. Yes, I think Lakeview is a pricier neighbourhood, but we are downsizing and bought a 1976 townhouse so that we could be close to North Glenmore Park. I would have loved to return to BC to be closer to my friends and family, but THAT’S expensive! I think Calgary will get progressively more expensive because it’s long been behind in housing prices from everywhere else. For me, Calgary is the city you get when you combine Vancouver and Winnipeg. And it will be cheap for us to drive or fly to either city.

I've been living in Calgary for about 10 years and I can say it feels like a home to me, its summers are hot, its winters are cold and all of its seasons are equally beautiful. In the summers, the temperature usually averages around 25-30 degrees celsius each day and in winters its -20 to -35 celsius a day. Its not as cold as people say it is but the feeling of the autumn wind stirs something great in you and one think I like about it is that the teachers in our schools are particularly friendly and humorous, atleast from the schools that I went to.

I moved here in 1985 as a work transferee from Montreal. It's a great place to live when you're raising a family and working. However, once those things are done, not so much. I have a golf membership, which we use for about 5 months, and we have e-bikes, which are great on the many paths. Now that we're retired, though, we get away for 4 months in the winter to Mexico. Half the folks in my complex also go south, whether it be Palm Springs, Phoenix or Vegas. There's a reason (well, maybe many)!

What a beautiful city. A shame about the public transportation: I have a medical condition that makes driving very difficult, and the one thing I really did find frustrating living in Canada was the lack of options for people without cars. It's kind of shocking, too, for a country that is otherwise so good at being aware of accessibility: there are loads of reasons (old age, young age, low income, medical conditions, etc) why a person might not be able to drive, and it's sad that something that would make so many lives so much easier is not often available. Honestly, aside from thatched cottages, the thing I missed most from England was the trains. Getting around the UK without a car is actually really easy: getting around Canada, you have to fly or drive.

That's why I drive a Jeep Rubicon Gladiator here in Calgary. Four wheel drive, lots of ground clearance, so deep snow is fun to drive in and not a problem, but you need studded snow tires in winter for ice. We have lots of hills. Overlanding in the summer. I like the winter for ice climbing in the Ghost, Canmore, Kananaskis, and north of Lake Louise on the Ice Fields Parkway. Both nordic, back country, and downhill skiing. White water playboat kayaking in the summer. And a lifetime of mountain hiking trails. Lots of bike trails. Fatbikes work well in the winter. Ebikes are very popular.

"we have been living" & "I watched." while it's not too dramatic and everyone will definitely understand you and natives tend to be way less strict grammar-wise than we get thought in school I came to notice myself, it's still a general rule of thumb to better use perfect tense continuous for something that you started in the past and still keep on doing and simple past tense for something you happened to do in the past. just tried to point it out because those two examples are so close together (like low hanging fruits, almost 😅). and I definitely don't try to like, "pull you down" or something stupid (as coming off the wrong way is sometimes just too easy over the Internet) but wanting to help ya out, my fellow immigrant 😅 (okay, I temporarily moved back for now because it turned out, even Canada isn't like too easy to migrate to, but I used to live in Calgary as well. oh, and throwing my two cents in: the thing Europeans might underestimate the most is the wind, lol. no really, it's-umm-annoying most times. I definitely wasn't used to this nor did I expect it .. or shall I rather say, "was expecting it?" however, English is still a way less complicated language than German about which I'm very grateful, lol. sorry anyone for getting a tad on the longer side, lol.) cheers!

It depends on personal preferences. Lots of people like it and stay there. We wanted to live in a bigger city so we moved to Calgary.

I'm from Calgary and moved to the west coast many years ago. I do still enjoy videos which extol the many virtues of Calgary. Thank you. One thing you missed are the people. In general Calgarians are optimistic, positive and open to innovation. The one thing I miss about Calgary is that "can do" attitude of almost everybody. However, I think you have to be fair and describe some of the downsides of life in Calgary; car dependancy is a real issue, public transportation is horrible,, only the most expensive and older parts of Calgary are walkable, boom and bust cycles are still a thing, stratified social structures that make upward mobility harder then they need to be and, finally, when it is cold it really is too damn cold.

Cost isn't the only reason for choosing a place to live. One thing for sure, living in Calgary is great for someone who loves the outdoors, and loves to travel since Calgary's airport is well connected. As for the cost of housing, a person can move farther out such as a nearby town. Where I am, its common for people to commute 50 miles one way (80 km) or more due to the cost of housing.

Oh for sure, but since 2015, housing in Canada has increased 50%, making us basically the worst in the world now. Even a townhouse would require an income of $150K, which is pretty bad. I moved to Calgary last year, July 2022. It’s a beautiful city but of course the cold days which I’m not accustomed to, coming from Ontario. I also noticed that roads are not cleaned during winter and the ice keep piling up which for one is dangerous and very unsafe to drive on. And not only the road but even on the major highways they take long to get them clean. I noticed no one commented on that and my pet peeve is seeing all these beautiful cars with crack windshields, every other vehicle has a crack windshield which is unfortunate and a turn off for me. So I’m thinking to head back to Ontario due to those concerns for me.

We recently moved to Calgary from Toronto. Calgary is great during summer - parks, trails, Banff, Canmore, lakes.. So much to do and see. HOWEVER. We had a snow storm in beginning of November and we were just SHOCKED by how the roads are. FYI residential areas ARE NOT PLOWED. Roads are in very bad conditions, plazas are not plowed and cleaned. Ice everywhere. It WAS A SHOCK to us. Nobody talks about it, but it is a huge problem for us. All locals I talk to here, saying "oh, it is normal. City just doesn't care". Highways are all right as it is being taken care of by province. Main roads are hit and miss, residential areas and plazas (including parking lots) are in BAD CONDITION. .

Since it’s the second largest concentration of head offices historically and a lot of corporations have left - less budget for snow. Noticed this also. Its a sunny original thinking less corporate baked in tradition can-do area. I miss it.

My funny tourist story about Calgary. When my wife and I visited Calgary we stood at a 4 lane major highway close to downtown (Memorial Drive). As we weren’t sure where to go, we stood at the side of the road and checked the map. Suddenly the cars were stopping and we crossed all 4 lanes. We actually didn’t have to cross it but we felt obliged as the kind Calgarians already had stopped. 😂👍❤

Beautiful video about Calgary, my favorite Canada's city...Hmm, this couple perfectly illustrates what i've always thought: With all due respect, my viewpoint on this is that we, Spanish-speaking people emphasize the syllabes when speaking, while native English-speaking people emphasize the consonants. (So Carla emphasizes syllabes, and Matt consonants....Pretty cool couple, by the way!)

Train not underground is due to an extremely high water table . Also factory in Wynn LRT were built in Calgary and Edmonton at the same time it was smallest cities in North America to have this kind of train system. Nobody thought it would survive outside Alberta . Look at it now. The main reason it was above the ground is I believe astronomical additional cost . And was struck down due to ‘ eye sore ‘. I tend to agree imho

Rents have soared 55% since making this video and real estate has gone up 20% or so. bidding wars, etc. Calgary is the #1 boom and bust city, so a crash is expected soon.
