I’m glad that more people are talking about this change. Another weird thing to me is that changing a character’s powers is kinda unusual for the MCU. Characters like Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, and Dr. Strange have mostly the same power set. Even characters that changed quite a bit like Falcon and Spider-Man still have their core concept intact. Why was Kamala’s powers altered so drastically compared to everyone else?

@@ye87 If you were a comic fan, you’d know that Ms Marvel was so successful that her first issue got seven printings (a feat typically reserved for the likes of Spider-Man and Batman) and she has become the most critically acclaimed modern Marvel hero next to Miles Morales. You would also know that the reason why we haven’t gotten a Silver Surfer movie is because Marvel didn’t have the movie rights to Fantastic Four characters for a long time and only just recently have been introducing Fantastic Four elements. Just because the character wasn’t created for your very specific demographic, doesn’t mean that she is an unliked character. Far from it in fact. Do you know how many Ms Marvel knockoffs Marvel tried to make during the Champions run that never took off? That’s because Kamala had something that people gravitated towards that the other heroes didn’t.

The idea that Reed *needs* to be the first stretchy MCU hero is just ridiculous to me, it would be a meaningless gesture (he's already had four movies anyway) and the casualty of that gesture is a massive part of Ms Marvel's character. Why should her existence or presentation pivot around Mr Fantastic? Thirdly, they’re all still examples of duplicate super powers, so my point still stands. And fourthly, if you REALLLY want me to name characters that share the same abilities with ZERO relation to one another, just think of the fast mute from Eternals and QuickSilver. Or Captain Marvel with Not-Superman from Eternals (and yeah there is technically a difference but shooting lasers from your eyes vs your arms are still the same functionally speaking since it is a laser that hurts things). Or like the guy in the video said, all of the different super soldiers running around. Or Scarlet Witch and Dr.Strange (and all the Wizards in the Sanctum Sanctorum). The point being that whether or not they have anything to do with each other is irrelevant, duplicate powers have always been a thing, so trying to say that Kamala can’t have the longness just because Mr.Fantastic is gonna exist in this universe soon is a bad argument.

Regarding the comparison to Reed Richards... they aren't even the same powers, not really. I mean, yeah, they can both stretch and make parts of their bodies bigger, but that's where the similarities end. Kamala has the ability to alter the mass of any part of her body, making it longer or bigger, but it's more like an extension than true stretching, because that mass comes from somewhere else. Mister Fantastic, meanwhile, has the ability to alter the *form* of any part of his body at will. He can reshape himself into a parachute or a wheel or a ball, and he can absorb basically any impact. These are things which Ms. Marvel cannot do, but Reed is limited by his existing body mass, which is not a limitation that Kamala faces, and so he can only stretch so far before he's too weak to do anything, and he's not known for getting big.

I agree and well said. I would further add that her powers were a brilliant visual metaphor. My ex-wife is "third culture" (mixed race, several languages, belonging to two different cultures while growing up in a third). She had described the experience as constantly trying to "twist, stretch and shape herself to fit all the aspects of herself".

Ms marvel using her stretchy powers in new ways is such a fun part of the comics. I haven’t read too many of them, but I remember that one of the things I liked most was how she grew her feet big to take less fall damage, or grew her hands big for extra strength. Having energy that you can make anything out of just means you don’t need ingenuity, you just need to make the best thing.

This would have been a great excuse to redo the Inhumans properly since that's part of character interacting with other Inhumans mainly Lockjaw. Even the Captain Marvel obsession is barely a factor since later on during Civil War 2 she turns against her suppose mentor.

I think Marvel Studio's insistence on having a shared universe is starting to cause problems. Particularly with character's backstories and power sets. It also doesn't help that I think we've reached the breaking point of what we can do with superheroes in live action. We need more ANIMATED Marvel movies/shows to compete with DC's animated shows/movies. Kind of like those Marvel animated movies they were making with Lionsgate before the MCU got HUGELY popular and stopped making them. I really wish Disney/Marvel Studios decided to make Ms. Marvel into an animated show so they could avoid the uncanny valley completely and not have to change her powers.

Shared universe is totally creating problems with backstop and powers. Marvel is making universe cohesion and sequel/spinoff set up come first and prioritizing it above telling a good story.

Some things in comics certainly don't make the translation to live action all that well. Animation is imo the superior format for comic book adaptation, if we look at what was achieved with Spiderverse I think it's clear how incredible an animated MCU could be. But they're committed to live action for the most part and I don't think they'd introduce any new important characters via animation. Especially when they want stuff to cross over. There are costs and benefits to a live action interconnected universe.

Hardcore doubt on that notion. Number one, we have so many wacky movies with weird special effects and visuals by now, both cartoon and live action, that the notion itself has become very questionable. Mr Fantastic and Monkey D Luffy have proven that it works in animation at least, and the Live action F4 movies had many problems, the depiction of the powers not being one of them. Number two, new Kamala's powers are so generic and vague in their nature that I am getting Shang Chi flashbacks, where they did a similar dumbing down of the Mandarin's Powers. This looks more like a case of: "We want that muslim girl as our new flagship, but we can't be bothered to think up fun storylines with her own powerset, so let's make it easy for ourselves".

I agree with what's being sacrificed for the change. But hopefully it's still focused on with how they're using her powers. If the rumor is true that the band she is using is the Nega Bands that once belonged to Captain Marvel in the comics, then they could be using that as a tie to Carol and the Kree more directly hence why she's getting included into The Marvels. It's making Kamala's powers more Kree centric instead if Inhuman centric now.

Thoughts: 1. She gets the quantum bands from the Quasar books. 2. This gives her power on a level of Monica Rambeau, America Charvez and Captain Marvel. Which is possibly needed for the Marvels film. 3. It is sad she doesn't have her old powers but I'll give it a chance. 4. I'm actually super stoked the quantum bands may be in the MCU. Just found out: "The Quantum Bands are often confused with the Nega-Bands, the source of the original Captain Marvel's powers. This confusion comes from the fact that they look rather similar to each other and grants similar powers to its wielders." So they could be the Nega bands which would make me sad.

my issue is kinda petty, there is a captain marvel adjacent hero namaed Quasar, his solo comic from the 90s was the first marvel comic i collected in it's entirety so the character is quite close to me, his powers are similar to green lantern from DC, he can make energy constructs, he can fly, and he can basically teleport from solar system to solar system all of this is possible due to a power artifact called the "quantum bands", when kamala was introduced to the mcu she was given the ability to create light constructs using a pair of bracelets and she is a captain marvel adjacent character, the mcu basically took the abilities of one of my favorite marvel characters and slapped them onto a separate character just because they wanted to avoid comparisons to mr fantastic, quasar as a character has always been perceived as a "wait who is that?" character by fans and the mcu is really influential to pop culture and comics so now the character is buried even further, now when people think of the captain marvel adjacent character who can make energy\light constructs people will think of kamala instead of my boy quasar also to a lesser extent i have always liked ms marvel so they also changed a character i have always liked for kinda lazy reasons

Well said Josh! If any of you are still defending this change please consider these additional factors. 1. The last avengers film has multiple people on screen whose powers amounted to "shooting guns" and "wearing suits of robot armor." No one cared about similar power sets in movie before this so why can't we have two characters with stretchy powers? And as josh pointed out the mcu already has a ton of super soldiers. Why is this where marvel has decides to draw the line? 2. Even if the change makes mister fantastic more unique it makes kamala less unique. She is now the third marvel hero who's powers amount to "glowing colorful cgi energy." Technically the fourth when you consider that dr strange uses his magic to create energy constructs constantly. In the multiverse of madness trailer he literally makes a buzz saw constructs. 3. If budet is a concern then why make this a Disney plus show? Why not make it a full theatrical movie? The marvel brand is strong enough at this point that it will make tons of money.

Just so you guys know, she will still grow and the limbs will expand, the bracelet isn’t really like green lantern’s ring where they project the fist, looks like the bracelet has Quantum energy, pretty much similar to how Ant-Man & the Wasp can shrink and grow with tech, seems like the lights in the bracelet is gonna spread through her body and she will have polymorphism without making her inhuman

I think its for two main reasons. First is the fact they have yet to introduce Mr Fantastic and wouldn’t want her powers to preempt his making him look like a second string. Second is that they are trying to tie it to the other Marvel Kree empowered characters. So by giving her powers through the Kree artifact i think will be the Nega Bands it more closely ties her to the other Marvels. Plus we have only seen snippets of her power set her embiggening aspect is even at least partially seen in the trailers. And the Nega Bands have a wild range of power possibilities so allot of her powers could still show up

Also if they just make her bracelets "negative bands" that's a pretty damn disrespectful thing to do considering rhythm in the source material her bracelets are tied heavily to her heritage and Pakistani history.

I don't mind the power change but I don't like this power for her in particular , in the comics their power help her to take a beating and be kind of safe since her body is very resilient and that help her grow but if your give her and artifact that depends of concentration,dexterity, reflexes etc. What's going to happen if someone tries to shoot her? Marvel studios probably changed her powers because of Mr Fantastic. Mr Fantastic is far more well known and popular than Kahn. Plus, the fantastic four is about to come out within the next year and probably didn’t want two characters with similar powers. Everyone knows Cap Super soldier serum cannot be duplicated to a T. It essentially died with urskin. Yes there are “super soldiers” but none on caps level and everyone knows that. They even said that in cap and the winter soldier. So that argument doesn’t hold water. Also cap was established in the MCU far before any of those others and is far more iconic

Sources near Feige's inner circle say it's a simple matter that they're about to introduce the Fantastic 4 and Mr. Fantastic to the MCU--and already have in a fleeting way in Multiverse of Madness), and because her powers in the comics are so similar to those of Reed Richards they wanted to differentiate them more since they're being introduced in the same time period. Also I've heard rumors that they are adjusting the origin of the powers--not the bracelet macguffin but where IT got those powers--to make it more similar to that of Carol Danvers and thus wanted her to have some similar powers with some blasts, even if a bit Captain Marvel Lite. Remember that the MCU is NOT a full and faithful adaptation from the comics and never has been. Go back and read the original Thor comics and tell me where all of THAT is in the MCU.

I got kinda disappointed when watching the show. I haven't read the original so I didn't know her powers were different, but whenever there's a new sueprhero I'm always looking forward to seeing if they have cool, unique powers. So when I saw her powers I just felt that they were sort of... Basic. I mean they did do some cool things with it, but it was just like you can lump her together with a ton of the other ones with similar powers. I wish they had kept her stretch and grow powers, even if they might look more boring in terms of visual effects compared to the glowy, crystalized powers she has now, it just feels more creative and limited (in a good way).

Ms.Marvel comics and in Animation she has been great. It's not ironic that some people compared Kamala Khan to Peter Parker, same school - life - heroing anxieties and all the trouble and tribulations that comes with that. Remember in the comics her powers comes from the Terrigen Mists which brings in the whole Inhumans and everyone remember how bad of a series that was. I understand the need to change it but it the also changed the powers to be energy probably be cheaper CGI. But it does feel like a cop out... also as the story developing I just feel this isn't the character of Ms. Marvel. I dunno if it's the writing, the directing or actress but it just feel it's missing her personality and character that comes off the comics

Every single concern brought up in this video was addressed in the comics and then fleshed out more by *not* centering Kamala in the one-dimensional lone-wolf-with-sidekicks-and-maybe-a-love-interest ways that they traditionally do with other heroes. The awkward coming-of-age aspects and goofy sense of humour were peppered throughout the series in a more wholistic sense than most so far with the predictable "I have body image issues and parents just don't understand" storylines. In the end, she learns to embiggen amongst other things so that was never lost. She's a marginalized immigrant who is also coming into her own as a young adult and getting to know her family and heritage. They did incredibly well by allowing Kamala to be her full self making her *own* choices without making that identity separate from her family or community because *in collectivist cultures, community and self-identity are linked* they're a necessity not a nice-to-have. Your knowledge of your history and heritage are also just as important as your individuation in these cultures. In the series, they address how family and community are super important to the immigrant experience. Her friends and family are integral to the way her superhero look and identity is formed *which is a far more realistic characterization* of any mentally healthy human being, especially a teenager. They also address the often mischaracterized ways that parents of colour know to show their love to their kids, the importance of food and events like weddings for bringing people together, and the generational divide problem between mothers and daughters of color, something that people without this experience predictably gloss over because they are looking from the outside in but things that are hot topics of discussion online. The comic may have been written about a Pakistani-American but only those living that could have fleshed it out in a way that resonates with the people living that and similar experiences.

I agree I hope the Disney plus show will somehow find a way to rectify the changes in a character like Ms Marvel although I'm not aware fully of the character so for me, the show will be an introduction to her. I will be honest the trailer looked good but I think this will appeal more to teens than us older crowd like myself but I'm willing to give it a shot I just hope it's not just a typical teen flick show like many other Disney shows on teens. I hope we get to see a quirky introduction to the character. I do believe the reason for the change is I think Marvel wanted to have a character that associates with Monica Rambo and Captain Marvel as they have cosmic powers but who knows time will tell i guess.
