I think having a separate category called the "Hall of Fame" (working title) would benefit this system. That way, when a game has lost its excitement but not its merit, it can be placed there to remain recognized as great despite the passing of time.

I think calling the list top of all time has the connection with something more definitive or permanent. Calling it the top games of the moment is less catchy but more accurate. Finding the balance in the way it is marketed might avoid confusion in the future. I understood it for what it was but could see others having an issue due to the wording.

This inspires me to finally tackle a top 100 list on my channel.. I feel the same way. It’s great to play a new game and be excited about it, but the true test is what keeps making it to the table and what’s still loved years later.

I love that you dove into this Alex and the Psychology behind your list and what it conveys. I do think a couple of challenges for people to parse your list (and all lists as you point out), is that there are some key pieces of data that contextualize a game's place in the list (or lack thereof) that aren't available when you're doing the list (and would be hard to convey, unless you did a spreadsheet supplement). 1) When did you first play this game? 2) How much have you played it and how often since then? 3) How many total hours did you put in, and how did it change over time as you put more hours in? It seems like rankings that are most "true" are those of games you've played over the years, a number of times, and still stick around. These 300 hour games that burn out could also just be a consequence of games that are actually like "Great" 30-50 hour experiences, but designers try to make them 300 hour ones to create hype and inflated prices. Also, it does seem like games that say were an AWESOME 10-20 hour experience, but don't have much replayability suffer over time as they're pushed out, and yet might be great recommendations for folks. Lastly, as you clearly say, games you've played recently, but not very much, that are high on the list, should be taken less seriously (perhaps) because they are more likely to represent hype/newness, inherently. I'd be really interested to see (if it's not too much extra effort, since I'm suspecting you track a lot of this stuff) some of these extra data points alongside your lists! Thanks for all you do and this transparency and deep thought about your process!

I can totally get playing a game to the point where it can drop off the list, especially if it is more recent like Gloomhaven is for you. Munchkin is a series that I haven't really touched in years but at one point we had people over nearly every weekend playing it in some form. It was still on my top 10 list mainly because I am so far away from the burn out stage that I can appreciate the game itself again, and do plan on diving back into it fairly soon. D&D is another example for me where I had been running a campaign up until a year ago, but was feeling burned out for at least 6 months prior, and I had been the forever DM for our group for over 10 years.

I agree with your methodology. My only change for my own rankings is focusing only on games I've played in the past year. Because I allow for that time frame I can have a mix of not just what I most want to play, but how I felt about those experiences in that year.

I think the biggest difference in 100s of hours in other games and 300+ hours in the Haven games is the amount of time in between those hours. Zombicide probably has close to the same hours but over years and different iterations where gloomhaven and frosthaven are fairly similar and from camp co-op ran through those hours faster.

Probably to some, not having Gloomhaven in a Best of All Time Top 100 is like not having "The Godfather" or "Star Wars" in an All Time Top 100 of Movies. Of course board games and movies are completely intended to be experienced differently.

Here's a controversial thought. I don't like Gloomhaven, and i don't like Godfather. I think both are good, but both are overhyped. I do like Star Wars movies(the original ones) though. My favorite boardgame is Eldritch Horror, as flawed as it is, it's what gives me the most joy. Gloomhaven, i got tired of after 3 or 4 plays in. That's just how things are. People like things and dislike other things. Just because a majority of people love something it doesn't mean it's for everyone.

@@Arch002 It's very fiddly, there's a lot of different tokens, and decks to shuffle and set up. So it takes a while to table it. There's no insert either, so unless you make or buy one it's gonna be hell to set up. I've made my own insert and it cut down setup by half. You need the first small expansion (forgotten lore) to get the base game complete, otherwise it's just a demo good for 1 or 2 games with each ancient. It can be really random at times, you need to let it screw you over, and don't worry about it. If you can't let randomness go, this is not the game for you. When that randomness forms a pattern, it's awesome though, and it does so more often than one would expect. It also doesn't really tell a story. It tells you random bits of a story that you have to piece together in your head to really enjoy that part of the game. And lastly it's a really hard game to win. So you do need to be ready to lose. The game will make you it's b*tch, and you either gonna like it or hate it, it's up to you. I love the game, my girlfriend hates it. Both of us do it with a passion. It's that kind of game.

I wonder if spending 100's of hours in a system in a "binge" sort of way might be what makes it drop so fast or far off your list...I wonder if gloomhaven or tanares adv. might not have dropped so hard if they had been played slower over a longer period of time... Thoughts on this nuance?

But if I want to "fairly" rate it among all the other games I've played, then I should also play those other games just as much to see if they also burn me out so as not to earn a place on my top 100. Great video that outlines your thought process in a clear manner. However, I respectfully disagree with some of the conclusions drawn. In particular, I think it is possible for a game ranking to be based on all the games you’ve played during your board gaming career, while still recognizing that the name “Top 100 Games of All Time (20XX Edition)” might only make sense with certain ranking criteria. I suspect that many in the community expect for a “Top 100 of All Time” list to take into consideration multiple factors, such as the degree to which a game is fantastic, how easy the game is to table, how little one regrets their experiences playing the game, etc. Gloomhaven likely scores highly according to such criteria, even if the person ranking is more or less done with the game at this point. My impression (which could be incorrect) is that your list is based largely or solely on how excited you are to play the game again at this point in time. For this reason, I believe that even though the list is based on on all the games you’ve played during your board gaming career, there are more accurate/informative titles you can consider using, such as “Top 100 Games I [Like/Am Excited For] Right Now in 20XX”.

Speaking from the perspective of someone who really loves campaign games, it's hard for me to wrap my head around the burn out factor when discussing "Top games of all time" since, in my view, it's more about the overall experience that the game gave me when looking at it's "of all time" value. But, I also understand your viewpoint is more about the returning to the table factor when evaluating the game's placement and that's something you're upfront on so I get it's just a difference of opinions on that! So, that all said, would it be fair to say that in the future you can also have room for a specific "Top Campaign Experiences Of All Time (Current Year Edition)" then? Since it seems like the main sticking point trends towards 100-200+ hour game experiences rather than 100-200+ hours invested in playing a game being the determining factor of the burn out hitting your "of all time" list. I know you did the Campaign & Legacy cull video in 2023 but it could be an interesting subject to be able to address the longer games and how they rate while also tackling the burn out issue. If nothing else, another content idea!

I enjoy the thoughts and conversation, Alex. As has already been said by others, top 100 “of all time” would tell others the best of-the-best, and suggest to viewers the top games to get, even if you’re personally not playing them anymore. The top 100 “you enjoy playing right now” are games that as an avid gamer who has thousands of plays of thousands of games- what you enjoy now… well those games might not be as good; but just newer and less played out. Not a suggestion to someone new to the genre or a specific gaming system. That’s how I interpret it. I don’t know if this is a big deal, other than viewers are influence by such ratings and your opinion holds weight. So they may feel burned if they buy a highly rated game only to find it’s a flash in the pan and there was something better that you already played and got bored with. But your feelings are yours, so you should express how a game does or doesn’t hold appeal over time too. Fun discussion point!

I never played gloomhaven so this is 100% a third party perspective. Heres the thing, when I think about video games for me games that go in my top 10 or top 100 go there for overall enjoyment that I ever had. Most people view top 100 lists that way because it usually is an aggregate of best of the best of all time. Recency bias is fair however... I personally never replay video games (theres a couple exceptions and most of those I would place probably in my top 10). Therefore even if I played a game 10 years ago I know that it was a 10/10 and even if newer games are also a 10/10 maybe some stuff shift. That makes sense and on the one hand I agree that eventually things might get pushed out. But I still disagree here on the overall concept of what a top 100 should be. I think most games wont give you a 10/10 experience 300 hours in. But the fact that you got that far says something for the game. That alone should count towards something. Campaign games also have a lifespan where games that arent legacy games etc typically fair better in terms of replayability as the experience is reliant less on the story but the gameplay itself. Just some thoughts to consider.

The only comment I have for content creators across the boards is that I understand that some of their favorite games are out of print and international games, but to remove them from their public list. Why? Because people watching content creators watch so they can get ideas about what to consume. Content creators can still have those games as their favorites, but I know for a fact that many viewers ask where they can get the out of print games or where are the international games. It isn’t the content creator’s fault that consumers then spend too much money to get games that are out of print or have to be shipped from Japan, but it is enticing for people who want the games because now they have been told how great the games are. Content creators do get games that other people can’t get their hands on, and then tell us how great they are. After watching the best of all time videos, there ends up being 15-20 games each year that aren’t available without spending absorbent amounts of cash on shipping or to pay for games marked up 2, 3, and sometimes more than what they cost when in print. I also get that games go out of print and come back in to print, but when the video is made a quick BGG search can show which games are available. But, to each their own, I guess.
@BoardGameCo

I do understand why you have that preference, but personally I don't agree. Meaning, for example, I don't include prototypes on my top 100 for a variety of reasons, one of them being lack of availability... Whereas most of the time older games are available, they're just pricier. I don't think a pricier game should be excluded.
@TimYoung1984

@boardgameco I get your reasoning. I’m not going to not watch content because I would not do it the same. I will give you some examples, however, as to why I have come to my unimportant conclusion: I watched the Dice Tower too 100. Mike Dilisio had half a dozen games only available from Japan. The games were all trick taking games that cost $15. The shipping was twice that. He bought the games at conventions or they were air shipped to the Dice Tower HQ at no cost to them. I don’t think if shipping is more than the game and is coming from overseas should be included because the cost sink. Zee Garcia includes games like In Bruges, Notre Dame, and other euros that have been out of print for 5, 6, even 10 years. The cost of the game is now 4 to 5x higher than it was when it was in print, and that doesn’t include the $15-20 shipping. Some games have been reprinted, but the reprints have rules changes that are almost universally panned or production issues that are bad enough that the content reviewers say, “If you can get your hands on a copy of the original printing the do it!” Again, this does not, to me, equal availability. This puts these games into the category of grail games, IMO. It puts it out of reach for almost everyone financially, and, also IMO, is irresponsible to pay, say, $150 for a game that was $25 when it was in print.

While I don't think people should have gotten upset at this because its your list and you can do what you want. For me Burn Out is a personal problem, so I tend to not include a game burning out for any list I make. For example I had a good 6 months were everyone in my group wanted to just play scythe, I got burnt out cause we just kept playing just that game 6-8 times every week when they came over. However everyone else wasn't burnt out because for them the game was just that great. So While Scythe will lower on my top 20 list because of my personal experience with other games being better, it won't lower because of a burnout that may have to do with just how I am personally feeling. Its funny because I just started Gloomhaven again via vid game version this time, to get others to play it that are long distance. So for me I did that full Gloomhaven game with my normal group, and it never burned out.

I totally get the condition "in the collection". But if the list is "all time" then all time it should be. This means that if based on this ranking I would buy a game I would get a better game not newer (and therefore more exciting at the moment). Analogy: If I just have seen "Lords of the Rings" it doesn't mean that is now out of my top 100 movies "all time" because right now I don't want to see it again. Some good points made. I play a lot of games, although nowhere near the level that you do?! I have come to the conclusion that I prefer games that are either single scenarios e.g. Cthulhu DMD or that have fairly short, and therefore manageable campaigns e.g. Dungeons of Doria. I am not good at finishing, or even continuing games, that require hours and hours to complete. Although League of Dungeoneers remains my number 1, possibly because there isn't a need to keep moving on so that it can be finished? There is a freedom that big campaign games don't have and so I can play it at my own pace and can choose the scenarios that I want or just create my own. Unlike Oathsworn, which I love, but am still only half way through and I know exactly what I will be doing, the next time I get it to the table. Knowing this about myself stopped me from buying Aeon Trespass, a game which appealed to me in so many ways, but I would never finish ?! Like I will never finish Tainted Grail and maybe never even start Middara, beyond painting it?

Everything makes sense. In your top 100, you preface with the list as games you want to play right now. If the game isn’t in your collection then you are perfectly fine with not playing it right now. Gloomhaven is not in your collection because you went through the campaign and have no urgent desire to replay it over other games. If everyone in the world played Gloomhaven with the condition that they must play the entire campaign, it would not be ranked high. The complaints are worrisome because there are people out there who can’t accept that people think differently from them - what does that reflect on them as a person? Is that how they treat their everyday social microtransactions? It’s a little creepy. Maybe you can have a list of top 10 legacy game experiences.

Had you say you realized gloomhaven was not the game you though it was after 300 hours of playing, It might have been easy to get why gloomhaven has left you top of all time. But right now it just still sounds like it’s your top you want to play right now. It’s ok. You should just have said that. Really don’t get why there is 20 minutes videos to justify something that odd. You have the right not to want to play it anymore. But a game losing 97 places (at least) in 1 year just proves there is something odd. Either you discovered something that killed the game and so you could assume you went wrong 1 year ago. Or you are doing a top you want to play, and therefore assume the naming (of all time) is odd. Anyway doesn’t need 20 minutes to say that. I say that because I really like your channel. While you may realize I'm always giving you a little crap about what you cut and keep I'm hoping you know I'm teasing. I hate that you had to put this out. Your list, is your list. No one needs to agree with it ever. I'd estimated that between your play through of Gloomhaven and starting Frosthaven thats about where you would land tho. I'll also say that I pay more attention to your list of experiences from 2023, than your list of all time (tho I watch them all). For me most existing games I know, I've already formed my opinion on. But there are new things I've missed.

Gloom haven is probably a fun game but it would NEVER hit the table with my group. Campaign games just don’t fit with them. I tried running Descent 2nd Edition, it’s a fun game but they are all D&D players mainly so to them why aren’t we just playing that. My group comes to my board game nights for a different experience they aren’t having in their other group. So rules lite games we can play while drinking and having whatever potluck we put together goes best for us. For the heavy games they have their D&D group and I play local tournaments for TCGs. No doubt I respect Gloomhaven as a game and its design. It’s just not ever going to see play with us.

That's interesting, I do Dnd and do Gloomhaven as well with the same groups minus some people. For my group they see Gloomhaven as different then dnd, because the mechanics and world are entirely different. In fact I have had some dnd game sessions were, they asked if we could cancel since certain players weren't available, and instead play gloomhaven.

@CheddahSlammer I actually agree with you personally. For me it's 2 things. 1.Getting them to try it because they would like it if they tried it but they don't see the purpose a game like that provides. 2. For people struggling to keep up with D&D sessions that break off after a play session or 2, trying to tell them I am also going to convert our chill group to yet another campaign style game that will require frequent attendance is just something they aren't willing to schedule. My group has basically become the come as you will stress free side group. We also invite our new employees to the group frequently so we get a lot of non gamers and females who aren't into the concept of a heavy rpg or strategy game. The plus side is all the games I've purchased to play with that group had the added bonus of being played with preteen girls. I've almost only started buying for that group and switching my game tastes for that purpose.

@@Zaku14CK Well for me I chose the people that would like Gloomhaven. I didn't invite certain people from my dnd group because one is a big fan of role playing, but when we go into battle and mechanics he hates it lol. Another guy just doesn't like board games. Ive had people come and go with my dnd group, but for the last couple of years its been the same people. People that don't consistently show up, and tend to inform people at the last minute. Like last week informed everyone game was happening at 8pm, and only 3 out of my 6 showed up. The others inform me at the time were supposed to start that their not coming lol. I got them into Gloomhaven because it was one of those days were only some people showed up, so I was like we can't play dnd with so little people, lets try playing this board game. They instantly got hooked, and wanted to play it weekly.

You're obviously not the only one who does it among boardgame channels, but it does come off a bit disingenuous to add the "of all-time" to the titles of those lists if it's really just "top 100 favorite games, 2023 edition". In any other realm like sports, music, films, novels, video games, etc. "all-time" lists mean that you're trying to assess things across time without bias in regards to any particular time, whether it be colored by recency, nostalgia or accepted conventional wisdom. In the case of Gloomhaven, I would think that means you're considering those hundreds of hours of enjoyment as less significant, impactful or memorable than the sum of enjoyment your 100th game has brought you.

I don't like Gloomhaven. For me, it is a subpar DnD experience. No, you can't take a rest in the middle of a fight. No, gold pieces doesn't disapear at the end of a combat. No, a DM never asked me to do a stupid side objective during a combat, like following the walls the whole fight, to get a extra mark on my sheet. Plus the cards system is overrated, I've seen better one.

What do you feel is better? Personally the card combat system is what makes Gloomhaven so good.

@@Twineandribbon I am speaking only in term of cards system not necessarly one applicable for dungeon crawlers even thou I am sure you could probably find a way to adapt some of them. The cards systems of Guard of Atlantis 2, Dune: Imperium and even Spirit Island and how they tie-in to their appropriate game are just more interesting to me. And I am sure I will find other games where I will prefer the multi-use cards over the one in Gloomhaven. Like with Innovation which I am very thrill to try out.
