Pretty nice video, just a quick note at min 2:23 I think a "p" is missing in the name of N. ampullaria 😉. Btw., quick tip for beginners: I've received some Nepenthes just 2 weeks ago, very small specimens and it took 8 days to arrive but I've lost no single pitcher. It's very very important to refill the pitcher with dest h2o to prevent them from drying out. Cheers
@WindowsillNepenthes4 жыл бұрын
Good catch, Thanks! I'll rewrite the name tag. So you think we can prevent the pitchers from dying by filling them with water? I'll thy that next time!
@AtraxJoe4 жыл бұрын
@@WindowsillNepenthes 100% sure. In particular immediately after delivery, when they've lost all the liquid in their pitchers, it's very very important to refill the pitchers (around 50%) with rain or dest water. The plant will reproduce the digestive enzymes step by step, no prob but the water will prevent the pitchers from drying out and dying. Except one of the pitchers is an old one, of course, this will die anyways 😉. This is actually pretty common after you've received some new carnivorous plants, same for eg Cephalotus follicularis or Sarracenia sp.. Cheers

My ventrata was growing healthy without pitchers for 4 years due too lag of light and humidity about a meter from west facing window and it had 4 shoots, each one was more than 2m and it was crazy, but i sadly went out of space and it also had 2 basal shoots so I decided to cut all of them and I had more than 150 clones which i all sold. For these money I bought N. Gaya, veitchii x Hurrelliana, Lowii x ventrata and few sarracenia, dionea, sundew and Mars hydro growlight. Now I plan to let it grow as long as it wants and with humidifier which I bought about week ago and grow light it will just explode with growth. This crazy ventrata after 6 months after cutting huge shoots now is 30 cm in height (2separate grow points, 3cm in height during cutting) and it is already producing 4 basal shoots and 3 shoots between Leafs in the middle of the vine. It is branching like a tree so I think it will look really strange in few months.
@WindowsillNepenthes3 жыл бұрын
Impressive! Your plant produce a lot of basal! It's always good to be able to sell some plants to get new one.
@maksgrygiel3 жыл бұрын
When u want lots of basal, first u have to give it higher humidity (65-80%) and than stress it out. By this I mean just cut out the grow point at 45% in the way, that above the leaf is from 5 to 10 mm and on the other side the cut starts about 2mm above the leaf. It will promote few basal shoots and thankful to cutting it in the right way you won’t loose this big shoot and it will most likely grow from the point where the leaf connects to the stem, and sometimes like in my case from the middle of the plant, so u can get from 2 up to 8 grow points out of 2.

I have a plant that was dealing with an infestation of scale insects and lost all it's pitchers eventually. I have been treating it with an insecticide and it has been recovering. No new pitchers yet but some of the tendrils do extend, so I think it's only a matter of time before they come back, just as long as I make sure the scale is eradicated.
@WindowsillNepenthes3 жыл бұрын
Yes it should be ok but how did you suspected you got scales?
@sarrakitty3 жыл бұрын
@@WindowsillNepenthes I know where they came from I'm pretty sure. A ficus bonsai tree I had to bring in for the winter had them. I treated it too, but it was in the same room as my pitcher plants last winter. Last summer I used insecticidal soap on it several times but apparently that was not enough because the scales re-appeared later in the winter. I tried a systemic insecticide on the affected plants and have not seen them on the ficus all summer, and after a second treatment of the pitcher plant I see no more there either. I will keep a close eye on them though, and I wiped off any visible ones on the leaves. I give it about a year or some more months before I'm convinced that they are gone for good. Have to stay vigilant with these pests! Fortunately this one plant is the only one of my pitchers I am aware of the scales having spread to. I treated two others that were next to it on my grow shelf and have not seen a single scale on them. Also I took the infested plant and moved it away from the others while I was treating it. Just got in a N. Deroose x Alata, and it has a couple of pitchers on it, one definitely older (or had way more sun) than the other, but I noticed the older one, the little top lip leaf on the mouth of the pitcher is browned a little and curling a tad. I mist the plant twice a day, and it sits at night for a few hours in a tray of lava rock and water (not the plant standing in water) until a new grow light arrives where I can keep it there all the time. I was a tad worried for my plant, but even if I lose this pitcher, or even both, it appears to be developing new ones and definitely growing new leaves, which means I've got things right for it as its acclimating I hope! Yes, most of the intermediates like 40-60% humidity, but good light is even more important. For air conditioner, yes. I keep the temp around 25ºC/77ºF the day and at night it's 18ºC/65ºF. Take care with closed setup like a tent, if the sun hit it directly the heat will build up inside and you risk cooking the plants. Make sure the sun don't touch the tent ;)

Hi! To grow pitchers, your plant need 2 things: good light & humidity (40-50%). So move it on a bright window and you can put water container beside if your house is really dry. But most of the time, sunny window is enough ;)

I can’t get it to make very many pitchers. Although it grows a lot and is over 7’ tall. Any tips for getting it to make pods? Also I’m not sure how to handle how tall it’s getting, as it grows the bottom leaves die off so it had a good foot at the bottom that has no leaves now. Before it was so big I repotted and buried the older sections but now it’s so tall I would need a pot that was very deep to do that.

For the vine you can always cut it and try to root them. For no pitcher, it can be a lack of light and/or humidity.

I bought a tiny dried ventrata from the garden center. It was clearly dying from thirst, so I asked my boyfriend to water it from the bottle straight away. The next day i could see it was already happier. Then i gave it a bigger pot. I heard no soil, rotten stuff ok. I put dead leaves and stuff, perlites,rocks, chunk of moss with very little soil and other light stuff in the pot. It grew extremely fast. Japan is humid, so i left it outside, it was taking the rain , and super happy. In winter it is very dry inside, so i leave it in the humid bathroom for a few months. Japanese take bath like all the time, so it was humide enough. But light not good cuz the window is not clear so i knew I should remouve it asap. A few pitchers died or half died but then spring came and it is on the balcony again. There is a roof on the balcony now, so it changed our habit + i cannot collect rain water. But now the pitchers are huge and it made a baby. I cut the tiny thing but it does not like soil and also i cut it without precaution. Trying to save it in hydroponic system , see if it roots.

I feel you are doing a good job with the plant! Yes soil isn't great that is why we use moss. Some people use akadama with success but it's rare and expensive here. Did you tried? And for the bathroom, a small 24w grow light would fix the problem ;)

I know this video is 2 yrs old but I have decided to grow pitcher plants. I have always wanted to but didn't think I could here in Alabama. I thought they had to be outside plants. Something I read somewhere, probably. There is so much misinformation on older websites. I received my 1st baby (2.5cm) plant via shipping. It arrived with larger leaves that were standing straight up but they were a bright yellow with only a little green running down middle of leaves. There was 2 tiny pitchers that looked bad and have now (2 days later) turned black. There is 1 small dark green leaf at base of plant. I watched the video about them shutting down the pitcher while they adapt so I feel better about that. How can I bring the green back to the leaves or is it in danger of dying. There is no sunburn red on leaves. The tiny pot had plastic wrapped around it with humidity droplets but when I took the plastic wrap down to check; the sandy soil was hard and kinda dry. I would appreciate help from anyone! Don't want to lose my first baby, lol. I have been growng aloe and orchids. I started with 2 venus fly traps because I read they were easiest.
