In today's video we take a close look at 'Nepenthes Upper Pitchers vs Lower Pitchers' - the characteristics of both upper pitchers and lower pitchers, the differences between them, and the reasons for those differences. I show you these characteristics on my various Nepenthes plants, along with plenty of photographic examples.

Do you tend to cut the vines early on, on most of your Nepenthes in order to get more pitchers? Do you like to get a few flowers or are you more inclined to bypass that phase and go with more pitchers. I personally am not into the flowers as they are not all that showy to begin with. Also, at what time do you think it is correct to cut the vine back? Is there any particular length you let the vine grow to before you prune it back? Thanks for your video, by the way.

This is great information. I wish I could grow mine as big as your but I think the lack of high humidity may be one of the main issues. The two I have are just “standard nursery” purchases not the gorgeous colorful types.

Thanks Trish - I know it's not everyone's favourite topic but I love them. I've had it on excellent authority that you can grow them really well regardless of the humidity - providing you can keep the media moist at all times and don't let them dry out for any length of time.

Id just like to make a little correction, not all species make upper pitchers, its known that Nepenthes clipeata only makes lowers. And ik this wasnt said in the vid but also not all species vine, Truncata, clipeata and glandulifera are some examples (although truncata and glandulifera do still make uppers)
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 3 жыл бұрын
Nepenthes clipeata seems to be an exception - there are always exceptions. Do you know of any other species that don't make uppers? There appears to be some debate about Nep. truncata vining - some argue it definitely doesn't and others argue it definitely does! It's always difficult to make sweeping statements about anything in nature, as someone somewhere will usually turn up with a discovery that thwarts all attempts at making rules. Thanks for providing some useful and very interesting additional info.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 currently i dont know any others that dont make upper pitchers, i but there may be more though. Regarding truncata vining, from a few people who i talk too experience it seems like it dont vine, perhaps it looks like it does due to the leaf size at the base. But it could be a possibility that maybe they do (you can never be sure) but it sure is interesting. (So sorry for the late response aswell) maybe one tay i’ll be able to tell for myself since i own a young truncata clone.

Do you need to fill or partially fill the pitchers with water yourself when your plant starts to grow the pitchers?

@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'm not to be honest. They're tomato pots with a deep root run - not because Nepenthes have big roots - they have quite the opposite - but so that you can stand the pot on a surface and the pitchers won't be tipping up. They came from the seller in these pots. As I hang all my Nepenthes I don't really need them!

I actually don't like when nepenthe vines; you are saying we can keep cutting the vine to keep them compact and bushy? Will they always grow new basal?

That’s what I do and it works fine. It’s no different to pruning any plant. Pruning encourages growth lower down.
