I saw the original video and realized you were a bit shaken up about it so your reaction was understandable. I saw the comments in that video pointing out the likely culprit was cracked solder joints so I "liked" them to promote them. It is actually a fairly trivial to fix a cracked solder joint if you have the right tools for it, your original screen may yet be restored with something as simple as a $15 soldering iron from radio shack. Very good on you for owning up to it being your own error during the install process. A more technically knowledgeable reviewer may have noticed the cause/mistake earlier but that doesn't necessarily mean they would be a better reviewer, sometimes someone who actually experiences the pitfalls and puts them up for all to see makes the best reviewer. Anyone who returned or canceled their order for this product should be able to reconsider after this video and know where to be especially careful during the install process to avoid a similar issue.
@The_DuMont_Network2 жыл бұрын
I just wish we could still get "a $15 soldering iron from radio shack". To the eternal lamentation of all, there are no more Radio Shacks. But then I have my 40 year old Weller soldering pencil. And they still make replacement tips for it.

It's possible that in the newer displays, Tesla has increased the strength of the connector, so it isn't necessary to have the stabilizing clip any more. Still, I definitely think the strain relief is important. Even if no one has had a problem using a mount without strain relief for years, it could be one of those things that decreases the time until failure -- so instead of the screen lasting 20 years, it will break in 10. I am glad that Matt has designed one with the strain relief.
@FrugalTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
It is a very good possibility that they have made the connections stronger even in anticipation of adding a swiveling screen down the road.

Matt’s design is quality ALL the way. Some or likely most of the copy knock-offs are rubbish. I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. The screen unplugs very easily IF you get it right. Using force is not the answer- (which is usually the case on similar electronic gear).

@techyjames19452 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear the swivel mount wasn’t the issue. I did have one question did I hear you right that you was able to find a new screen for less than half the price Tesla would charge for a new screen? If this is correct that is good for you that you was able to find a lower price alternative. I briefly thought about a swivel mount, but for me I couldn’t justify It because right now I use my car part time for Rideshare. I got a slide over mount that holds my phone to the left of the screen and would image a swivel mount would shift the positioning of the phone be to possibly be blocked by the steering wheel if I moved the screen to face me more.
@FrugalTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I found a new screen on Ebay for $300 as opposed to $1,300 for a new one from Tesla. It would probably be closer to $1,500 because they probably wouldn't sell it to me over the counter and would charge me to install it as well.
@gregpetrites41822 жыл бұрын
If you haven't already, I recommend watching a few of Matt's video related to his mount where he describes the visual orientation of the mount. His mount was designed to compensate for relative posoitioning to steering wheel such that the left edge doesn't dive behind the wheel. As you would want with anything Tesla, it just works exactly as you want with simple elegance. I will give a quick heads up with installing the Atlas mount...something that Matt points out on one of his videos...the first couple days after installation, you might find the up/down pivot to be loose. This is easily adjusted by tightening the mount. Once you have it adjusted, it will continue to operate flawlessly. Highly recommend the Atlas.
@FutureSystem7382 жыл бұрын
@@FrugalTeslaGuy Was it brand new, or out of a wrecked Tesla? (That’s a huge price saving.) I’m 99% certain that the old screen could be fixed by a competent repairer. Might be worth doing perhaps now that there is no time pressure. You could then keep as a spare, or sell it at a profit.
