By removing the limit you make people antagonize each other even more , so if the rest of my colleagues are taking 10 days off per year then i can't take more days since my productivity will suffer and i will never get that promotion , so i might as well take less days off , then my colleagues take even less days off and we reach a point when no one is really taking time off unless it is something extremely important. Same goes with removing the standard 9-5 work day , you have people working 14 hours a day in order to reach a big goal and get promoted and you might argue that if you don't want a promotion you don't need to put in 14 hours a day but then if the average is lets say 10 hours a day and everyone working there are pretty intelligent people, you can't just work less hours because you will seem like the odd one out not reaching the insane goals that everyone else is reaching because they work all day and you will eventually get fired.

That's not really unlimited vacation. It's "unlimited but". That's what companies do when they see a cool idea they want to use but don't really want to change their culture, so they pretend they are down with this new cool idea but only the names change, everything stays the same. As Rubenstein says, not every company can work as Netflix, and on the same line of though, not every role on the company can have 13 weeks vacation per year.

@@yuxasaba7920 they can't fire you for "taking too many vacation days" but they can fire you for some other bullshit when they're actually mad that you took what was in their eyes, too many days off. When your livelihood depends on keeping your boss happy with you, and there's no clear guidelines on vacation time or even the dress code, you're going to play it incredibly safe so as not to upset your boss. That's a much worse situation than working somewhere that guarantees a set number of vacation days. When everyone is clear on how long you can take off, your employer is less likely to get pissed with you for taking that time off (not that it stops some of them. Even in the set vacation days set up your boss might be pissed with the timing and try and get rid of you for that). Talk to anyone who works for Netflix (except for the top jobs obviously) and they'll probably tell you that they hardly use those "unlimited vacations" I guarantee it.
@whyisgamora4191
@whyisgamora4191 3 жыл бұрын
@@yuxasaba7920 Ignore the ''If you take too much time off, you'll get fired'' part. Just think about this. A system without proper guidelines for vacations will create a very unhealthy work environment between employees because all of them will be competing to take as few vacation days as possible to work for that promotion, and if someone does take days off they will be harshly judged by the rest of the employees who do not. That's literally what's happening at Netflix, ask anyone who works there. Regulatory vacation days are SO much better than unlimited vacation days, because the unlimited vacation days actually just make it even more difficult and stressful to actually take them.

@@sucram1015 because there's pressure to not take full advantage of it. You'll probably be fired if you abuse it, and so this may lead you to hardly use it at all, because you can never know how much is too much. It's much better to work at a place that guarantees a lot of vacation days that you can arrange for whenever you want, than to be on vacation, constantly worried about whether or not each day is one day too many in the eyes of your boss. To use the example in the video, think about workplaces that say "dress how you like". You can't actually dress exactly how you would like in case it offends anyone with the ability to fire you. Obviously no-one's gonna show up naked, but we can't be sure on the individual sensibilities of our bosses so most will still dress cautiously. When there aren't clearly defined rules and your livelihood depends on the job, there's a lot of pressure there. Even if your boss can't fire you for taking your vacation days, they'll find some over trumped up charge to get rid of you or otherwise make your work life suck. So yeah, I'm with Brad, better to have the security.

The real answer is to abolish the idea that 40 hours per week = full time. Companies have reduced their requirement for salaried employees down to as low as 4 hours per day (instead of 8) and actually seen productivity rise because (presumably) A: it's easier to focus harder for shorter periods of time and B: employees are incentivised to be more productive during those shorter hours because they know the alternative is to get sent back to the mandatory 8+ per day like the rest of us schlubs.

He's beating around the bush. In my experience, unlimited PTO actually leads to employees working more. Not only can you dump the overhead needed to fund traditional schemes, but people aren't so concerned about actually taking their days and using them as vacation days. They take maybe a bit more time 'off' but continue to work on 'off' days whereas under a traditional scheme this would not be the case. For all employers out there. Implement unlimited PTO and you will save yourself so so so much fucking money.

It’s USUALLY the women in the office who don’t get to use the benefits as well, as it’s mostly women in those “lowly” but extremely necessary positions. I worked for a small company that originally had generous vacation benefits. Company sold to new owner who instituted "unlimited time off" and all it did was reduce productivity and increase inter-employee friction. Some key people took LOTS of time off and really caused problems with work flow. New owner didn't even seem to notice or care. Unlimited vacation might work for some companies but certainly not with ours.

whats more important is that the HR needs to discover those who are not using any vacations and engage them towards choosing a time for vacation and even plan/advice on vacation. Workers especially IT Staffs quickly forget to take care of themselves, We are used to thinking our work is not troublesome but our brain processes more electricity than most people in the world. it will not be detectable when we break down due to work. I encourage everyone out there to work responsibly.
