I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but I think the reason Dumbledore indicates it "has to be Newt" is...Newt is the Master of the Elder Wand! Remember how Harry became master of the Elder Wand because he disarmed Draco after Draco had previously disarmed Dumbledore, thereby, vicariously, became Master of the Elder Wand? Well, in this case, Newt defeated Grindelwald in "Fantastic Beasts 1". Even though Grindelwald wasn't carrying the Elder Wand at the time, it was in his possession. Dumbledore has, perhaps, reasoned that Newt is the Wand's master and can therefore win against Grindelwald. It could be the Dumbledore/Grindelwald Friendship rationale for them not fighting. But, I think Dumbledore is too much a strategist not to be willing to face Grindelwald but for there being something to do with that Wand. As an aside, I believe Hagrid & Newt will play crucial roles in the 1945 Defeat of Grindelwald when Dumbledore finally must face him down. Really looking forward to seeing how JK plays this all out.

Honestly, that scene looked very stupid for me... I mean, Newt grew up to be a scientist. That means a lot of travel and discovery, but also a lot of research (therefore a lot of paperwork at the office). Also he wrote textbooks, which he also probably did in an office of some kind. I think the more fitting form for a boggart would have been an abused animal or the animal on a brink of extinction...

Well Dumbledore was seen teaching the kids about Boggarts. Can this be classed as transfiguration. You are transforming one thing from another. We know Dumbledore doesn’t always follow the rules, so it’s not hard to believe that he may have strayed into another subject Edit: we could all just be thinking completely wrong. Crimes of Grindelwald is a movie after all. And what do movies have? Easter eggs. Dumbledore teaching Newt about the boggart, is simply a way of mirroring what Lupin taught Harry. We know how much Harry looked up to Lupin, so by using the same classroom and the same magical item, it’s not hard to believe that they did it to show the father and son relationship between Newt and Dumbledore. (Again this is just a theory)

Ahh u got so close to mentioning this at the end but somehow didnt: Dumbledore thinks Newt is the best man for the job of defeating Grindelwald because that would lead Newt to become the master of the Elder Wand, and Dumbledore knows Newt is one of the few people in the world who would not be tempted or corrupted by its power! Newt is pure of heart and deserves to wield it because he would use it selflessly to help others, and not for personal gain. At that point in time Dumbledore does not yet trust himself to wield the Elder Wand and only eventually does so reluctantly. TLDR: Dumbledore wants Newt to become the master of the Elder Wand!!!

Dumbledore definitely recognised that Harry and Newt’s selfless personalities would make them well-suited for an unlikely leadership role. I think that’s why, in part, he didn’t make Harry’s early years as easy as he could have. He wanted him to stay humble and not let the notoriety surrounding him go to his head. Remember Dumbledore even said to Harry in DH: “It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well”. It looks like the scene with Dumbledore in front of the MoE in FB2 nods to this recurring theme. I believe that is him seeing his desire to be with Grindelwald, in contrast to Harry seeing the means of finding the Philosopher’s Stone. JKR always made it so that those with the purest intentions “win”.

Dumbledore' strategy on Harry could have backfired, becaus being taunted and bullies could have made him want revenge and being a bully with others. Or perhaps Dumbledore saw through Harry's instincts, knoing that they would lead him on the right path. Fortunately, Harry met Ron before Malfoy at King's Cross station.

I'm not certain about the books, but in the movies Snape filled in for Lupin as a substitute DADA teacher at certain points. I can promise you that Yates can't do shit about anything JKR is set on doing; he's the replaceable party. As others have already mentioned, it has never been stated that Dumbledore has always been the Transfiguration professor. He taught at Hogwarts for close to 60 years before becoming Headmaster and didn't start teaching Transfiguration until the 1930s, so we have at least 20 years in which he had taught another subject, or maybe even several others.

This is not the great duel yet, it takes place 18 years later in 1945, so we have time for Dumbledore to shine or not, but I guess that Newt will play a crucial role in Dumbledore 's victory and that Newt doesn't want glorification to begin with so if Dumbledore takes the credit because people exterior to the story didn't really understood what truly happened, it isn't unlikely. Newt is some discreet guy and won't want to be brought to the light, the media, etc... Besides, we already know that Dumbledore was credited with finding all the uses of Dragon blood where he just helped others to find those, so yeah, I guess Dumbledore could steal the glory within certain parameters. Doesn't mean he will have done nothing to stop Grindy, though. He's still the master strategist here.

Dumbledore could still be teaching Transfiguration. They are learning Ridikulus, which *transforms* a boggart. Yes, Harry learned it in DADA, but it's been clear that DADA was very unstructured during Harry's time at school, so it probably shouldn't be considered normal. Or maybe this is a non-canon, alternate timeline thing... please, no.

there are only two reasons we assume it's DADA: the room and the creature. With the first we are assuming that classrooms are assigned and that room has always/will always be the classroom, but in the first movie it's not the same room. We see it when Minerva gets Wood from class. The other assumption is the creature. We only have Harry's years at school to judge when and where students learn certain subjects, but Dumbledore had free reign of the school after becoming headmaster; he probably changed things around. We always have different occasions when a different prof, covered classes: Snape in 3, Grubbly-Plank in four and five. We also know that while the DADA instructor of that time had in fact been there 50 years, never stated that they taught the same subject (Snape is an example of that).

Newt isn’t the master of the Elder Wand, after Grindelwald, dumbledore does defeat grimdelwald, and therefore he is the master of the elder want. Newt didn’t defeat, or disarm grindelwald, they just captured him, nobody disarms him, or kills him. The wand chooses the wizard. Newt isn’t the one who defeats grindelwald, most likely he helped dumbledore defeat him.

That teaching scene takes place before 1910. Newt was expelled in 1913 and then served in the First World War. Merrythought taught at Hogwarts from around 1915 to 1965. So by those numbers, Dumbledore could have easily been the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

1 - Merrythought was only the *confirmed* DADA professor in 1943. Although she’s been teaching at Hogwarts for fifty years by 1943, it isn’t too hard to deduce that she may actually have taught in other subjects while at the school. According to an EW interview with Jude Law, Law stated that Dumbledore hadn’t “yet” gotten the job of Transfiguration teacher, which means that before he is in the post by 1943, it simply means that he taught DADA prior to his move. After all, we know that changing subjects is possible because Snape goes from Potions Professor to DADA teacher in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. 2 - the large beast that roars at Newt isn’t an Oni, it’s called a Taowu. Eddie Redmayne revealed this in two post SDCC interviews - one with MTV and one with IGN (both available on KZbin rn)

Pup314 the skull is actually connected to a Hookah pipe (as seen on the screenplay cover and in a close up shot of it in the pre-trailer teaser that came out the day before the event). My theory is that Grindelwald uses this Hookah to help with his visions. The teaser I mentioned shows the skull in the same office that Grindelwald is in when he sees the mirage of Credence, and when putting two and two together it seems like the skull possesses some kind of booster to Grindelwald’s seeing powers

So he is saying that Dumbledore taught DAtDA before Merrythought. Merrythought taking the position in 1915 (after that flashback) and retiring in 1965 (50 years that is canon).

I was going to say, Tom Riddle is born the year that Fantastic Beasts takes place (in fact later that same month) and he doesn't really attend hogwarts until the late 30s-early 40s so there's no reason between 1913 (Newts explulsion) and 1926 (events of FB and when Dumbledore would become a writer for "Transfiguration Today") he couldn't have decided to switch for a variety of reasons. It looks like Dumbledore was the DADA teacher for a while then probably switched at some point when Merrythought was brought in. Perhaps it's got something to do with the first world war?

I think Newt's boggart is symbolic. He doesn't fear the desk itself, he fears a mundane Ministry office job. In Newt's compendium of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, he was an Ministry of Magic employee, working for two Sickles a week. He spent his holidays traveling the world for new creatures. Another thing. The Sorcerer's Stone only gives you immortality and change metal into gold but it says nothing about keeping the user youthful. That's why Nicholas is so brittle.

I'm so hyped! I literally only spoke in capitals to one of my friends for hours just about little aspects of the entire trailer. And Alison who plays Queenie is not allowed to say anything! ALSO ON THE POSTER ABERNATHY IS ON GRINDELWALDS SIDE! I love all of the new creatures, especially the Oni (thank you for confirming what that was by the way- it was troubling me.) It looks so much better than the first film, and I adore the first film with all my heart so saying that this one looks better is like choosing a favourite dog. Just everything looks so good! And I cannot wait until November to see the movie! I am so hyped to see the dynamics between Newt/Tina/Theseus/Leta because there's obviously some tension between all of them, since there is that spark between Newtina (and Katherine has said in interviews that Tina is damaged by Newt- but Eddie has said that its not through Newt's fault, because he is trying to get back to New York to see her but, can't) and just the whole Leta being engaged to Theseus. Can you please elaborate on the DA teacher confusion? That you were talking about in the beginning of the video. It looks to me that it is a flash back of Newt's time in Hogwarts, and if thats the case that would put this scene in the year 1922 and put Newt in his 3rd year, if the Fantastic Beast movie ( in 2016) takes place in the 1926 (which is when Voldemort was born). So it could be possible that Dumbledore could be the DA teacher in the 20s and moved to the Transfiguration post in the mid 30's early 40's when Tom and Hagrid went to school. The Dual that happened between Grindewald and Dumbledore happened the year after Riddle left school and Dumbledore would have gotten the Head Master position for about 20 years later and when he turned down Voldemort is when the curse was activated. Not trolling or trying to cause trouble just want to know if we are on the same page and I understand where you are coming from.

Newt's first year at Hogwarts is in 1908, and his seventh year would be 1915 - though we know that he was expelled sometime in between those years. It would make sense if he were expelled in 1914, and at a loss for what to do, applied to the Ministry of Magic to help the war effort (WWI affected wizards and muggles alike). Newt's first year couldn't be 1922 because the first movie is set in 1926 and Newt certainly isn't in his mid-teens!

Zombo DeZany: Thank you for helping with pointing out my ERR with the time line, I just assumed that he had just left school with in a few months and not a decade.( just did more reacearch with potter more.) If thats the case I due agree with you that his expulsion could have taken place, 1914 due to the fact he appears to be able to apperate in the trailer. So if he learns about boggarts in his third year like Harry, the year would be aprox. 1910 which would be 23 years before Voldemort came to Hogwarts, so there is still plenty of time for Dumbledore to move subjects. So fixing my err I think helped my theory more plausible.

Maybe an error here: -Voldemort cursed the position of DADA teacher well after his graduation from Hogwarts (second time around), and as this film is set in the 20s Paris/Europe, Tom Riddle would be in his infancy and thus the curse would not be in place. It wouldn't be until near the fight with Grindelwald or just after it that Voldemort would have cursed the position

When Professor Merrythought retired was the first time Tom Riddle asked for the DADA job. He had just left school. It wasn't until many years later when Voldemort visited Dumbledore to ask for the job again ( and presumably hid the diadem) that the position became cursed.

I personally don't believe that Dumbledore is teaching defense against the dark arts, but rather teaching the theory of transfiguration by showing, what I believe, is the source of transfiguration magic, the Boggart; though I have no faith in Hollywood to think along these lines and make such a connection. We all know that, Professor Dumbledore is brilliant, but a bit mad and therefore, is exactly the kind of person who would go into the origins of magic to study the source. As I personally do not know of any other creature that has the ability to transfer your itself at will other than the Boggart. Not necessarily, because Dumbledore is at least friends with the current DADA teacher Galatea Merrythought and I doubt she would refuse Dumbledore the opportunity to utilize her classroom. Considering the fact that Newt wasn't expelled until his 6 year He should have already known about the the existence of Bogart's and how to deal with them though he may not have actually had the opportunity to deal with one in person as I have no idea how Professor Merrythought teaches. It's possible that she only taught the bogart out of the book and simply was unable to procure Bogart in order to teach them in their 3rd year. It's possible that she was able to get a Bogart in later years which is why, they have one available now, as opposed to having had one in their 3rd year. Dumbledore would have taken the opportunity to both allow them a chance at increasing their skill in DADA while also broadening horizons of their interest in transfiguration. Another thing that makes me believe that this is an upper level class and not the 3rd year DADA class (despite how young Newt looks and the really creepy child laugh track) is the fact that there are students from every house, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Gryffindor. Normally at most, we see two houses mingling together i.e. (Slytherin and Gryffindor in potions Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff in herbology) that is until later years when fewer students qualify for classes I find it entirely possible that this is the entirety of the 6th year Transfiguration class

The logical answer as to why Dumbledore can't face Grindelwald is because of Elder Wand stuff. The emotional answer is because he's scarred from Ariana stuff and is heartbroken over Grindy going evil I'm cool with either, I guess.

Hey, Ben. Theory and question. What if the elder wand was never under Dumbledore, what if it was Newts? That after the battle was won they could have said that Dumbledore won and newt could have given the wand to Dumbledore. Then the wand would never be Voldemort's or anyone else's. It just opens a few possibilities for you.

Grindelwald is definitely going to hunt down Newt to get the wand back in one of the movies, it might even be right before the final duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Maybe the duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald is because Grindelwald was going after Newt, maybe that was the reason for the duel, Dumbledore was saving Newt.

That’s an interesting theory! I almost thought OMG what if. But then I remembered that Dumbledore disarms Grindelwald, Draco Malfoy disarms Dumbledore and Harry disarms Malfoy and Harry is/was the last master of the elder wand before he destroys it. So for ur theory to be correct Newt would somehow have to be on the events of Harry’s time line but he was never a character character in the Harry Potter books. So he can’t be apart of the Master’s of the elder wand timeline.

You brought up several critical points.... 1) The skull is glowing because it is crystal (like from Indiana Jones...of the same time period). 2) The glove is Dumbledore's which is used to guide Knute to his objectives. 3) We know that Grindelwald stole the Elder wand. But because he didn't kill its owner (Dumbledore), the wand is not fully attuned to him. 4) Why is Knute the only one who can stop Grindelwald, because by being thrown out of Hogwarts, Knute is not an official member of the Wizarding World; therefore, he cannot be tracked by magical means. 5) Dumbledore and Grindelwald were more than just friends at Hogwarts. They were lovers in their youth. Until Grindelwald chose world conquest over love.

His fear is the desk because he and Leta wrote stuff on a desk, and he thought it was love, now she is engaged to his older brother, and he is afraid of the fact that she may never have loved him. In his childhood, it could have showed how he was afraid of the fact that he loves her, or anyone finding out
