Fun fact for ya: The composer for the original Star Fox actual quit working at Nintendo because they wouldn't allow him to release the game's soundtrack on CD/Cassette. Correction: a CD did get released in 1995 but Hajime was not given royalties since he didn't own those compositions and had stop working at Nintendo years prior due to an ownership dispute. He wanted to have ownership like Squaresoft and Enix's composers did.

As a Japanese composer, who does cooperate with some game companies sometimes, and does love Nintendo and their music, it's always heartbreaking to hear the cry and the scream from fans outside of Japan. Even though I've been buying their CDs as physical copies of their official soundtracks, it can't be avoided to feel if we had them on KZbin or Spotify. Siivagunner was one of the channels that provide the way to enjoy the music that we love, but as you know it's gone, due to their claim... One thing I might want to point out is, as I understanding the copyright and related law in Japan as a person who have been working with music closely, we don't have fair-use law, and cultural understanding of it among people either - which is sometimes really problematic and I believe it could be the cause of Nintendo's very old-fashioned stance of distribution of their music, although there must be a lot more complicated circumstances. As you and other a lot people pointing out, I really wish one day they change their stance, and at least respect to fans of their music much more broadly...

Thanks a lot for shining light on this serious issue that greatly impacts the video game cover and remix community. Nintendo's stance on licensing forces constraints on musicians' creativity, which is a pity since there are many unlicenseable favorite Nintendo tunes that people would love to see covered more frequently. And we appreciate the Line Them Up! shoutout! In addition to all the musicians, many game composers (including Donkey Kong/Rare series composers David Wise, Robin Beanland, and Grant Kirkhope) joined us and the team to perform on that project. We were scared about the possibility of Line Them Up! receiving a takedown (and still are scared, to be honest), but we did it anyway out of love for the VGM community and Origami King's soundtrack. The fact that so many composers joined us shows that your point about Nintendo's stance on fan projects doing a disservice to the original composers and their music is spot-on.

It confuses the shit out of me why Nintendo still doesn't realize how much they're hurting themselves with their policies. Releasing soundtracks in physical or digital capicities does only good for them, it would be literally free revenue, and yet they do nothing with it. But honestly, knowing Nintendo, it is hilariously possible that they miss out on revenue just to taunt and spite their fans for no reason other than their hypothetical enjoyment

This video reminded me of a once existing video that was titled in Japanese, was hard to search for, and was a random Donkey Kong country song. I found it randomly one day, but when I did, there were 91 million before me who found it, and decided it was an internet checkpoint. It was beautiful, seeing how thousands of thousands of people like me, were struggling, but even so, were recording their journey and powering through, or even giving motivation to others. Then in 2022, about march to may, the video was removed from Nintendo, after 91 million people had hit the checkpoint, and nearly 1/5 of which recorded their progress. It was heart breaking, and something I’ll never forget.

It's like this video was handcrafted for me. Nintendo has literally made some of my favourite instrumental music to date, be that Mario Galaxy, the Mario & Luigi Games, Pokemon, the Donkey Kong Country series, etc. yet everytime I wanna listen to it, I have to pray that my playlists havent been purged once again and I have no way to listen to em because the soundtracks are nowhere to be found on streaming or the like. Not enough people talk about this issue or seem to care, so thx a lot for bringing some attention to it!

HAL Laboratory has been pretty good with their music recently. Kirby Planet Robobot’s soundtrack got a physical release in Japan as well as being put up on Spotify, ITunes, Apple Music, Google Play, and Amazon. So did the 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert and the Kirby Cafe music. And the Kirby Star Allies soundtrack got a pretty big physical release in Japan. It’s still not as great as how indie games have been handling their osts but it’s better than nothing.

I remember about two weeks ago, a Let's Player's (Chuggaaconroy) Earthbound let's play started getting taken down, due to the ost, despite having legit permission from Nintendo to allow it in his content. The issue was because Sony released a cd full of covers over 2 decades ago and their copyright system detected it. I know it's not too relevant to the topic of the video, but I just wanted to point that out.

Y'all are overthinking it. Nintendo's a creative company, right? Well making their music available may be smart, but that means it isn't creative.
