I'm pleased beyond words to have recently purchased a 2007 Proulx OM/D. It is so wonderful to have an instrument that has such an amazing quality sonic expression in addition to the shear volume that I've never heard before. Very happy to be the owner and to also have someone likey you, Bryan, to be such a proponent for Proulx guitars!

When I bought my first acoustic guitar, I played practically everything in the store. I ended up gravitating to a 2014 Taylor 814CE. The salesman would not let me buy the one I had played, so I settled for one that was new in the box. It took 5 years before the guitar started sounding like the shop demo did. I also made some simple changes like bone bridge pins, bone saddle, and StringJoy phosphor bronze strings. Now I really like the tone! And being a Taylor, it's very comfortable to play. Watching this video certainly tugged on my gear acquisition syndrome, but not overly much. I will keep Proulx in mind the next time I am looking for an acoustic guitar, though.

I was a dread guy for years until I got a BRW OM with a Italian alpine top by a couple of Italian builders. I’ve come to change my mind about OMs and it’s been my #1 since I got it used 5 years ago. I should add it sounds unusually big, I don’t know how they did it. But it would easily compete with a dread. I now find dreads so uncomfortable to hold after getting used to the tighter waist and narrower body. I’m lucky as a lot of OMs don’t sound like this. I’m also thinking about having a 0000 luthier built with pre war forward shifted scalloped bracing, that would be something else.

I am a older guy, enjoy fingerpicking , flat-picking and heavy strumming at times….dreads are difficult to manage playing now but I like a canon sound at times….the large sound hole Proulx OM/D seems to do it all….but where to buy one?.

Same here Bryan. At 62 I discovered a Martin 000-15SM. Bought it used for $1000. Will never part with it. Plenty of wonderful sound. Then a 000-17SM used. To me these 000’s are the best guitar value in existence. Most anyone can afford one. Still love my D-18 and when I want to hear more horsepower I get it down. 000’s are just the right size now at 65. Plenty of sound I don’t get in anything smaller bodied. I prefer Mahogany guitars. I've been playing dreads forever, and never thought I'd like a smaller body guitar until I recently got hold of a 1997 Santa Cruz OM. I have three other Santa Cruz guitars (a 2002 D/PW, a 1997 12-fret D and a 2010 D/PW) and I'm crazy about all of them, but the more I play that OM the better I like it. If I could only choose one, that would be it. It gives up nothing in terms of sound, volume, projection, tone or clarity ... and, just as a practical matter, it's easier to travel with, since the case is smaller. I never heard of Proulx before, but they must be great guitars if you prefer it to Santa Cruz! Great video. Thanks a lot!

Bryan maybe someday in the future you will get a chance to compare your Proulx OM/D with a Martin 000-28 Custom Shop Authentic Aged (CAA). Martin lifted the bracing for that one straight out of the 000-18 Authentic 1937, so it's very lightly built. The CAA comes with no Popsicle Brace, but I'm sure that there are still some things that you could improve on the CAA. Very nice video.

Great video. I love all your videos but this one was one of my favorites. That little OM/D is amazing. Here’s a hypothetical question …. could that same body size and shape be built in a 12 fret version? I guess the bridge and sound hole would have to be moved down into the lower bout, but i can’t think of any reason why it couldn’t work. Don’t you think that could be a killer combo in terms of tone and balance? Kind of like the Martin Norman Blake guitars with the 14-fret OM/000 size body married to a 12 fret neck. Now I just need to find a builder here in the southeastern US who will build me one at a reasonable price.

Wow, that OM is a canon. Very loud, reminds me of my custom Bill Collings OM2H in that regard but your low E is something else. Through my laptop speakers you hit that low E string and it punches me in the face. Really impressive, something I've been asking Steve at Collings about as well as a bigger waist. I thought wider waist might allow for longer soundwaves giving more bass. The OM is 18.2% lighter. How big is the soundhole on the OM? Is the builder going to make those available in the US? That is the epitome of a flatpicking OM right there.

I had a Breedlove OM once. It had light gauge strings on it & I could play that bluesy Merle Haggard stuff all day long. Come to think of it, it's sounded a lot like Merle's guitar on those recording. My better half used to ask me to play her to sleep on that guitar. You could do massive string bends & still get a lengthy sustain out of the notes. For me, it had the best feeling neck all the way down to the body. lol That's true & that was also 20 years ago when I was younger & a LOT dumber about such things. I used to want a LOT of volume, bass & boom in a guitar until I learned what it really sounds like away from the guitar & from the listener's point of view. A guitar never sounds the same behind it as it does out in front of it. If memory serves me correct, that Proulx was very newly built back then & it probably wasn't even "awake" yet. Early on, I was heavily influenced by some of the local, old school, 5 fret rhythm players in my area. lol No offense to those guys. I love each & every one of them that's still around, but that's not the best school of advice to influence your playing & tonal preferences. lol If Dale Ann has still got that guitar, I'd sure be curious to see what it sounds like now. The OM/D is 2" shorter from butt to end of headstock. The OM/D is 1.5" smaller from the saddle to the place where my arm hangs over. It's 1/2" thinner. It's not dramatic, no, but it all adds up. It's like the difference between an action that's .096" and one that's .090". The thickness of two human hairs pushes that from "pretty good" to "butter". Being that my middle finger is right at 3" long (I use finger joints as a quick measurement), 2" in length is almost the difference between being able to cup my hand around the headstock or just touching it with the end of my fingers. It's almost the difference between putting a capo on the 2nd fret or not. Take your D and put a capo on the 2nd fret and compare that to no-capo. That's _almost_ the difference in reach.
@MrAuell
@MrAuell 8 ай бұрын
The small guitar is appropriate for your stature. I don’t suppose you’ll go for the Super D! lol I like OM’s a lot and I miss having one. If I find the right one, I’ll buy it. It could even become my number one couch guitar, but it would have to be unbelievable to beat my dreadnaughts out for number one. My number one in a D-18 Golden Era, and it’s a very good one-maybe a great one. The size doesn’t bother me. I’m a very large man, so it isn’t an issue. I would like an OM for playing on the couch, though. In your comparison, the smaller guitar gives up a lot of bass and compared to this dread it has more pronounced mids. But you can find lots of dreads with more mids.There are lots of very highly rated flatpickers who use dreadnaughts. Every single one that I can think of uses a dreadnaught. There are reasons for that. As a lone instrument, an OM or whatever size yours is do well. They generally have a more intimate and balanced sound. Someone like James Taylor, Eric Clapton, or Phil Keaggy can use them to great effect. For flatpickers, though, the Dreadnought rules and will continue to rule unless they are flatpicking solo. When I find a smaller guitar that is as loud as I want it, I’ll definitely think about it, mainly for couch picking-but it absolutely has to get the job done at jam sessions. Sorry so long.
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 8 ай бұрын
Did you watch the video to the part where I talked about how loud it is? I've been to Kaufman Kamp 9x, and Winfield 6x with this guitar and it's been in thousands of jams. I have never once, ever, ever lacked for volume and I've had SO MANY people- both listeners and other players- comment on how loud it is. I don't want bass.... that's what the bass player is for. I want clear, cutting trebles and LOTS of mids which is exactly why that's what you hear. I want a guitar that is _different_ from your typical D precisely so that it'll cut. I mean, it's not like I don't have killer Ds in the house. When I get serious, though, I take the Proulx and don't even think about it.
@MrAuell
@MrAuell 8 ай бұрын
I'm happy you found a guitar you truly love. But I would repeat my point that if that was the ultimate flatpicking guitar the pros would be using them. I have no doubt that it is your favorite guitar and most of us know how great it is to really dig a guitar. As far as bass goes, I don't want too much or too little, Bluegrass solos typically use the bass range in most solos and when i listen to my historic favorite players, they all seem to have a good bass response. When I try most Taylors for example, i find them lacking in bass. Part of that is probably because i've been playing, Martins, Santa Cruz and Collings for over forty years. All have a nice bass response.When I listen to TR he always has good bass bur never bassy. Same with most others. For solo playing, it depends on what you like. I always liked Norman's tone whether he was playing a dread or an OM style. But he doesn't typically play in traditional bluegrass settings. I know Proulx guitars are great guitars, band I might love yours to but in bluegrass jams I would imagine that a Proulx dread would likely be louder. I'll be the first to say you're right if we meet at a jam and I find your Proulx is as loud and easily heard as a Proulx dread designed for a flatpicker. But I am glad you found your favorite.@@Bryankimsey

The title of my video is "Why no D will ever be _MY_ #1 guitar". I made NO claims about it being the ultimate bluegrass guitar. IMHO, that would be a late-40's D-28. That's what Tony played on the Guitar, California Autumn, and Rounder 0044. But I don't want to fight the size so it's not MY #1 and never will be. A Proulx D, surprisingly, is NOT louder... it's just bassier. Even at 6’3” w long arms, I find dreadnoughts are somewhat difficult to play at times, so that’s why I got the EC. @Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 3 ай бұрын
That's because all Martins are factory built guitars and don't get any real tuning. The EC also has tall back braces which hamper bass... I've modified several of them to help with that. The Proulx is a one person guitar with numerous innovative features that are Mario's secrets that I won't divulge. I asked him to build me a serious small-body flatpicking guitar after I played 6 of his D's for a week. The D's were different and I knew this different-thinking guy could get into my headspace and produce the small body flatpicking guitar I wanted. I worked with him on the prototype to get what I wanted, with his definite input. Everyone mentions "bass" but what I wanted was punchy mid-range and the bass is just along for the ride. Anyway, Martin just doesn't work like that. The Clapton 000, as much I like them, is just a scalloped 000 with a nice neck. Take a look thru my channel at the Bourgeois JOMT. That's a pretty interesting guitar.

Okay... I just measured. 4 3/8" across the end block, 3.5" across the upper bout at the neck, and 4" across the waist. Where my arm drapes over is 4.25". Mario sold them as fast he could make them and there's a list for the list for the list.

@@Bryankimsey That’s quite a taper. Almost a full inch from end block to neck.

Some Dreadnought builders have figured out a better balance than Martin (which, to my ear, have a weak treble...): the Eastman E40 D has exactly the same rich low-end of a Martin (they've been scoped and they're identical); but, the Eastman is brighter in the treble like an OM creating the perfect balance. I have played a Mark Whitebook Dred (that's the sound on James Taylor's "Mexico" and "Wandering" from his "Gorilla" LP) and it sounds almost identical to the Eastman. I don't know how they achieved this...perhaps in the scalloping of the bracing? My son wants to trade me his OM for my Dred! The Gurian Jumbo J-R guitars, and the Olson's Taylor plays today which are a knock-off of this Gurian, have a similar sound...

All of those D's are still too big under my arm. Clarence White (another short guy!) had a Whitebook but it was 1/2" thinner than your standard D. The problem with all the others is usually Indian RW/Sitka spruce. The best non-Proulx I've found is the Bourgeois OMJT. Terrific neck on it, too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rny2p59nhNd8oKM

Meanwhile ... SIX YEARS on those strings?!?!? You sure you didn't forget about a string change in there somewhere [ you are getting older, after all ;) ]? Are you just not playing your Proux that much? You mentioned another Proux - do you have a video with BOTH Proux's in it? If so, I can't remember seeing it... (P.S. I'm "Lefty Rev" on the UMGF......)

It's smaller across the lower bout than a 0000. It's an OM with a pulled out waist and squared shoulders.

@@Bryankimsey I'm 183 cm tall and ACTUALLY they're more comfortable to me. 1. The right hand is supported by the big top, dread edge is cutting into my forearm. 2. Their waists are sitting tightly on thighs. It all results in feeling that a jumbo guitar is hugging you back. But you're not as tall, and the video is for older men, I get your point. :)

Punk. :) But the whole OTHER point here is that Mario Proulx makes very uniquely voiced guitars. They're not really like anything else I've ever heard.
