One thing I would change about Olimar: You know how characters post-brawl started getting unique UI when necessary? Give Olimar the same treatment: One large colored pip next to his portrait that matches the active pikmin, and 4 smaller colored pips that represent the pikmin as they'll become available. Just turn them into an empty socket when it's empty and turn it black when the pikmin is unavailable. That'd make it much easier to plan out your combos and identify certain patterns that you can use to combo. Smash is a complicated game, it's easy to lose track of those tiny pikmin when everything is exploding and particles are flying everywhere, so having a place you know you can look to plan your next move would be huge, I think.

This is something ive complained about ever since smash ultimate came out, Olimar SHOULD have a special hud similar to the Pikmin games so you can see which Pikmin is next in line at any time, cus that arrow thing is laughably small and hard to see in the heat of the action

Red and Yellow down throws are big combo starters at low percent. Blue is actually a bad throw at low percents because there's too much knock back to get guaranteed follow ups. Its common to even throw blue off the stage when it's not going to KO throw

Just for the sake of absurdity I would like to point out that Olimar actually has 9 different grab ranges instead of 5. the pikmin type, the type of the leader, and the number of pikmin influence his grab range. His grab range is also slightly extended when he is at ledge for reasons other Olimar players and I don't understand at all

Myran did retire about 6 to 8 months ago due to starting a new career and expanding his gaming repertoire. He has said though we would consider coming back for smash 6, but as of now is only playing at a casual level.

Against Olimar you adjust yourself based on which Pikmin he might have; if he has yellows he's far away so cross him, purples like to kill, reds like to fight, blues- like to throw? and whites like to be thrown so expect a zone-y playstyle if he has more whites. AS an Olimar player, you have to consider how your opponent will be evading your Pikmin, plan accordingly, and understand the possible mix ups with the options your Pikmin would prefer. Often playing or watching an Olimar play it's "If only I had x Pikmin in that moment" and that's his quit moment. When you feel a loss of agency because you couldn't properly gets your ducks in line. In that regard, he's more of a free-form improvisational character with strong moments that you can capitalize on and once it hits the curse of the Meta, not even Ganondorf, Kazuya, or Dedede would give you an opening. forcing you to fish for a decent Pikmin while Olimar plays the "come here or I'll shoot you" game for 7-and-a-half minutes

A good Olimar _Main_ is going to have to be a terrifyingly intelligent individual. Someone who can think about which pikmin they're using for *every* attack and using DownB accordingly while ALSO keeping a cool head while ALSO focusing on everything the *opponent* is doing as well If/When that Main shows up... things will get interesting for the little spaceman

That’s a brilliant idea for Steve balancing. If he had to recover farther, he has an option to discard his gold/diamond resources, or whatever he has in hand already crafted. Another thing that would be great is if blocks can only be placed directly above a platform. This would lessen his ladder combos, and offstage block edge guarding

Yep, that all sounds about right. Me personally, I'm not that good at predicting what pikmin comes next all the time so I treat it like a set of cards. I pluck my pikmin, see what I have, and go from there. The only problem is that if you have a blue your opponent knows what to watch out for when fighting. I definitely agree that Olimar's straightforward nature makes it hard to be creative.

Fantastic analysis. He really does suffer from an archetype dilemma, huh? I always thought he should've been a character around area control / trapping, given how the gameplay of the Pikmin games themselves are. Really hoping he gets a major rework next game that allows him to use his Pikmin in more interesting ways. He DEFINITELY needs 4 or 5 Pikmin in his lineup, but I feel his method for acquiring them should be made different from his current frame 1 pluck. I would also love to see an ability to dismiss your lead Pikmin and have it stand still; you could then press the button again to have that Pikmin do a unique attack. Just something, ANYTHING... I love the Pikmin series to death and yet I can't stand watching Olimar in this game. He needs a moveset overhaul... and his actual personality, too. Don't really get why he's portrayed as a bumbling emotionless space dude when there's so, SO much more to him in the actual Pikmin series.

I play a ton of Olimar so here are my thoughts. Playstyle-wise he is pretty much perfect as a representation of Pikmin. The problem is his lack of identity. His animations lack distinctiveness; not only is visual clarity an issue but his wonderful personality is completely absent in Smash. Players cant connect with a character like that, especially considering his design isnt very cool nor cute in a traditional sense. That combined with the inconsistency in gameplay brought up. In a theoretical redesign I would keep the Pikmin's unique attributes but maybe smooth some of the edges. Id also like for him to still have a full moveset without them, albeit much weaker. (Maybe without Pikmin his forward smash becomes that goofy dropkick from Brawl). Maybe change some attributes to encourage a more aggressive-zoning playstyle, like having enemies with Pikmin latched on take additonal damage from standard attacks, with balance tunings accordingly. Finally, give him his voice and give him silly animations because they are wonderful. Edit: and a UI indicator for current Pikmin order, you could rip this straight from the games

You say Olimar has quintuple the moves because all his relevant attacks use Pikmin- but they can ALSO be leaf, bud, or flower. These (at least) change his attack damage/knockback. I think it changes range/speed of some moves, too. So he has 15x attack variations.

The leaf/bud/flower doesn't actually affect damage. Just tested it and a fully charged red f-smash does 29.2 damage at all stages. I think it might have affected pikmin in previous games (or perhaps it was increased health?) but not in ultimate

Flowers actually represent how fast a Pikmin is at running around, that's it, they have no effect on damage, knockback or range whatsoever.

I used to be an Olimar main in Smash 4, the mechanics for that game helped Olimar alot to make him a turtley-defensive style of character and thrived on it. Now because of Ultimate's faster nature, I dropped him after the first year of play. Every character was so much faster and aggressive but Olimar lacked all of those attributes and felt like the same character he was once before, he felt like a Smash 4 character playing in Ultimate. I still like his mechanics and miss it from time to time but the lack of help he got from game to game made me give up on him which is a shame. At least they fixed trading aerials with other characters, now if they only did that for Smash attacks...

I remember back when I was obsessed with Brawl, Olimar was the _one_ character I basically never played. He was just so weird and, as you said, unintuitive. I didn't get his moveset at all. Wasn’t sure where to ask this, but how do you feel about a Why no one plays Zelda? A friend recently picked her up, and on paper she seems really good. 6 frame aerials with tons of base damage and generous hitboxes, up B kills at higher percent. Ledge trapping set play. It feels like lack of speed and disjoints are the main thing holding her back, but that doesn’t stop the fiery cat and wondered what else would contribute

Very good video. The one thing I have is that Olimar is the only character that looses his attacks due to the opponent(besides Kirby that you mention). The other character is Robin. The opponent can destroy Robin's levin sword. If Robin uses an attack with the levin sword and they are in the start up animation or before the hit box comes out, if they are hit, it counts as if they used their levin swords. You can find yourself losing several levin sword uses because they hit you and you find yourself with only one levin sword use left even though you never used it, whiffed a swing, or tried to threaten with it.

As a Brawl Olimar main, Ultimate Olimar feels like the developers tried converting him into more of a brawler type after largely only really giving him nerfs in 4 but kind of gave up halfway through? For instance, Olimar used to have a property on his aerials in Brawl and 4 where any active hitbox interacting with them, regardless of damage, would cancel out their hitbox entirely, even if they were overlapping with a hurtbox on the same frame, with the canceling taking priority over the hurtbox being recognized first, and in Ultimate, they decided to give his aerials intangibility like Meta Knight's aerials in Brawl, which just feels very slapped on. But, as mentioned, he still retains a lot of his old weaknesses back when he was designed more as a zoner/turtling character such as poor disadvantage, very light weight, and low mobility, along with maintaining those complex multitasking and resource management mechanics that shine much better for the zoner type they were originally designed as, so overall, his design now just feels pulled in two very different directions. That's not even getting into things like how just using Pikmin Toss once suddenly leaves Olimar with only 2/3 of his resources for a few seconds or the fact that Pikmin AI still suffers from pretty dire inconsistency issues, which can absolutely result in losing games in ways that the player can't realistically be expected to predict or account for without massively compromising on their gameplan to begin with. When I look at Ultimate Olimar, the question that always pops into my head is, "Who is this character for?" People who prefer brawlers and grapplers have plenty of much simpler and more consistent characters while players who prefer zoners have tons of far more reliable choices as well. Olimar obviously appeals to some people, but it's going to be people with very specific tastes (not that I can judge as a Greninja main currently in the process of trying to pick up MK). The sad thing is, I do feel like Brawl Olimar was a very unique character who sadly seems to be lost. Yes, there were a number of overtuned things about him (Frame 8 OoS Usmash that killed early and had little endlag on a turtle/zoner character was disgusting), but I feel like there absolutely were ways to balance him instead of just doing a half-assed job trying to change his original archetype. Of course, I fully acknowledge that a lot of players find having to play against a character like that annoying, but I really got a lot of joy out of using Brawlimar, and I am a little sad that we've not had a character really like him since then (Steve is kind of close I think, but I have absolutely zero interest in them).

What appealed to me was the pikmin management. I found it cool that I can play this kind of micro game inside the game. I first played him in brawl when I was mostly just playing characters my friends didn't play. Loved the different pikmin, getting that purple. I didn't know how to play smash, but i could play pikmin management. Definitely informed my playstyle as i started getting interested in the competitive scene. So i'm best with characters that range from zoners to brawlers.

His most reliable combos and best kill-confirms are either character-specific, 2-frame links, or ANIMATION AND CHARACTER SPECIFIC. Probably least well-known is that uptilt up air becomes a much easier kill confirm to land %-wise on specific characters, during a specific animation that occurs on specific %s out of a jab lock, and is harder/impossible to do at a character's feet then their head. It can also be used on dk out of a fair where he missed a tech starting at 0 to execute a 0-death because of course we can 0-death DK, it just requires two unbufferable frame-1 links and and perfect spacing brought together with delayed shffl movement

In the end you can do pretty well with any Pikmin next to attack. Don’t over think it. If you care about damage like most people do in video games that involve damage of said weapon or Pikmin, Whistle through the colours until red, purple or yellow are next. 11:56 of you think that, the Fire Emblem characters are straightforward characters. This kid knows nothing in the end. He thinks every character should win against other characters at a 50/50 winning rate. That’s not the case in this game. it’s called balance. So essentially the meta has shifted to the more complicated characters falling off due to players being too lazy to adjust to changing properties of the pikmin, even though it requires no changing of inputs and would rather use more braindead characters like cloud (big sword go burr), min min (long arms go burr) ect… Got it.😂 I think the drastic difficulty swing of some of these characters like the two I mentioned ends up fundamentally fostering bad players. Why play with a character that may be more complex but rewarding then you can just pick a character that outside of core fundamentals can allow you to essentially turn your brain off and abuse very easy to spam/hit with attacks and reap the rewards. Like it makes sense but also it limits players capabilities, which will eventually have a more negative impact of the metagame overall. Seems like it’s not even a matter of if at this point but when.

Is Spargo a great player, obviously but to suggest that there isn’t an inherent advantage to using cloud due to his ease of use is kinda silly to me. That’s why the character is so popular

What? No. Complicated characters are very popular because most are very good. The problem begins is when they are too exhausting to play long term, the pros outweigh the cons, or the character just being bad/unreliable. Sure you could play the character who you change the properties of his moves to better fit the situation, but it has to be done preemptively. If you change it and guess wrong, you can lose out on a kill, combo and could even put yourself in disadvantage. Why risk situations like that, when you pick a character who's move may be weaker or less applicable, but never changes and will reliably do the same thing every time? People don't play Olimar because his cons heavily outweigh his pros, even if he is a top tier. Too light, small disjoints, only kinda fast, bad tilts, and most importantly, Unreliable.

@@yaboytony3028 Yeah, that’s exactly what I mean by easy to play. Characters that are straightforward, no tight or long combo routes, no complicated or tactical gameplay outside of basic fundamentals, are usually almost all upside minus like a notable flaw or two. Which again, I see why players would gravitate to that, but it still does foster bad players, lazier play compared to other characters due to the lack of extra thought that has to be put into using them and it’s not the players fault. I blame the game devs. In a game like smash where you have easy to use, well rounded characters like cloud, Rob, the Agies, G&W, Min-Min that literally have almost everything if not everything while having simple to use, easy to abuse moves that other characters don’t have access to and thus will struggle more on average is a bad game design choice for a platform fighter like smash.
