The lack of modes is what killed it for me. What's the point in having all these characters if I don't have many options to do things with them compared to the last 4 games.

(Be mindfull that what I say in this comment is from the perspective of a causual player, because it's the way that I prefer to play games). For me, Mii Brawler is an interesting case. Sometimes in games, I look out if the game itself satisfies some of the greatest personal satisfactions in gaming, like how good it feels to be fast or, in this case, how good it feels to punch. When it comes to the satisfaction of punching, Mii Brawler (personally) surpasses every "punching" character in the roster because his "lack of identity" doesn't distract me, wich, therefore, let's me just focus on punching. Essencially, when I play Mii Brawler I think "Awesome: I'm not punching as the likes of Captain Falcon or Donkey Kong or some known gaming character, I'm just a guy who likes to punch, and I love it (and the results could be even funny if I dress him in a way that makes me laugh)".

As a casual competitive player (yeah kinda an oxymoron but you know what I mean) who's been with the series since 64, bringing out increasingly broken DLC characters really didn't help. I agree with you that there should be a smaller and more balanced roster. I've never loved the huge roster beyond pure fan service, which isn't a good argument for a fighting game's health. I'd also like a bigger focus on being a Nintendo game again, instead of having SO MANY new guest characters at the expense of oft-forgot Nintendo franchises that need the audience exposure to thrive again.

In the end you can do pretty well with any Pikmin next to attack. Don’t over think it. If you care about damage like most people do in video games that involve damage of said weapon or Pikmin, then you’re not going to enjoy the character for what they are. Just play and have fun.
