As a Plant main, I find this video very well made and surprisingly accurate. I'm relatively notable (though mostly in the online scene) and I am one of the few people that play this godforsaken character. There's just a few things that I think are important to mention. Poison (at least as I use it) is a conditioning tool. Given it's lasting hitbox, it lends itself to be very useful for baiting options from opponents. Simply put if they choose to respect it, it leads to stage control, but if they challenge then choosing the correct defensive option also leads to potentially big damage. I think it's important to note this because it gives poison a specific purpose rather than just a projectile that does big damage. You also mention Down B (I will be saying LSS) as a good move, however I think this is not the case. The move albeit strong has very few uses outside of a matchup check simply because plant risks a lot by doing it. Before you can even turn it, there is 18 frames completely in startup lag and once you do start turning the opponent only needs to jump over and they are guaranteed a big punish. Last thing is you mention how each of the 3 core character designs (Swordies, Zoners, and Brawlers) are bad MUs for plant. I think it's important to mention that Swordies actually are pretty good for plant. Swords overall have relatively slower frame data and get the most from the mid range. Plant is a very strong midrange character and thus actually has a ton of favorable situations against them. These MUs often become volatile though as both sides abuse each other's disadvantage. Brawlers do kinda suffocate plant very well and zoners are very good into plant so those were accurate. However Plants only winning MUs are actually a mixture of all 3. Imo he beats Shulk (Midrange vs a sword that gets blown up easily), Olimar (Poison stops all pikmin), Puff (Antiair vs aerial fighter), DK (Midrange char with brawler and swordie weaknesses.), Ice Climbers (Ptooie trading stops all combos), Bayo (Similar to ICs but Bayo is more consistent in neutral but is aerial based), and Robin (Although they are a zoner, their lacking speed means they struggle at controlling the pace of the game and Plant can abuse that.) Other than that though great video. I have played solo Plant for 2 years and I do think that despite his weaknesses his trapping style means that the better player more often than not will win anyway regardless of MU. Though since I'm part of the collegiate esports scene I have been picking up Olimar to counteract Plant's MUs. I do think what draws most to him is that at lower levels Plant can give results because people don't know the MU and his kit is very simple once used to. IDK though, I enjoy the character and even though he won't be in the next game (If there is a next) I think his inclusion was clever and I will enjoy my time with him now.

Down B sucks but mostly people decide to jump over it. That's why I release it when it's at that 45 degree angle. Hard to time tho but it covers jumping option well. Still sucks tho but I tend to use if from time to time just to keep them on their toes

The buff i always wanted was for side b to come out faster. It sucks when someone hits u right as youre bout to release a fully charged one and u lose it. This is the best plant description I've ever heard. I've mained plant for the entirety of ultimate and I run into these issues all the time. The regular attack buffs were definitely helpful, along with using the sling shot tech, it definitely has improved plant but hasn't changed a lot. Regardless of that, there is no one else in the game I'm nearly as good with. I play against good people a lot and piranha plant is always my ace.

Been a plant main for a few years now. I agree with a lot of the video, but I feel like you undersell his punish game a lot. The best way I have found to compensate for his lack of good approach options is going for reads and punishes instead. His neutral b is slow to throw, but the active hitbox appears faster than most people expect. Knowing where that first frame of damage is you can punish bad approaches. His down b is also good at catching weird angles in the neutral, as most people only expect it at the 90 degree intervals. He definitely needs some loving tho, especially when characters like Samus and snake are allowed the ranged tools they have. It makes plant feel underwhelming. Plant gang rise up.

When he was revealed, I just thought it was kinda funny, and then when I tried him, I immediately loved his move set. I’m also a big fan of Mario baddies, so that’s a plus. Absolutely agree. As a plant main, it has been hard to really put into words why I love this character and still recognize his faults. The first time I decided to main him, I just thought would be fun to do so because of how funny he was a character, and I have never looked back since. The amount of times I have played people who complain that his specials are too good makes me laugh, because deep down, I knew he really wasn’t good. The best answer I could ever give is that his neutral isn’t good, and this video really helped spell it out. No matter what though, I will always love this character. I believe you also forgot an archetype in Trappers, although it’s also reasonable to say that trappers are usually a subtype. My reason for making the distinction is that Plant is actually more of a trapper than a Zoner. He has no zoning tools whatsoever, but he can trap extremely well.

So as a Plant main one strat that I feel like few people are ready for is actually using the poison as cover to obscure what you're doing and then charge a down B. This way the opponent doesn't know where you're targeting and if you can read where they might go you can surprise them with where you pop out!

In Smash 4, i was a Corrin Main, i loved the character. but when smash Ultimate came out, corrin just didnt feel the same, so i struggled to find a new main. that was until Piranha Plant came out. Ever since then I've mained plant. they were my first character i ever got in Elite smash and the one ive used in Tournaments the most. but i havent play much smash over the last few years bc another game took its spot. I recently saw an interesting interaction with Plant's poison cloud that I question why people don't do more often. Place the cloud closer to the middle then use it like cover to obscure your character model. Charge up your side special and no one will be able to see it coming as its far too fast to just react to...at least for us normal humans. Plant has by far some of the best anti-air and trapping potential in the game. Plants advantage state is spectacular. Really good vid man. I main plant and a thing I noticed is that plant is about 90% reads and 10% off stage gameplay because of how good plant is off stage and I noticed this because I play against my friend in smash just about every day is that the more you can predict what someone is gonna do and for most characters in the game this balances out for the characters because if two people can read each others the exact same it’s still just as even as before but for plant it’s much more benefiting. But I saw at the end you asked for personal experience from plant mains so I thought this might help ;]

Yeah, Plant is overly reliant on his "Step 2", but as the metagame currently progresses through a more "punish game" focused phase, I think Plant can definitely make some waves by a dedicated player who pushes his advantage state to its fullest potential. But yeah, the neutral is *rough* for Plant compared to his high tier competition. Brood in Japan has shown that Plant can do work, but I don't know how much of that success comes from matchup inexperience or just Brood being a great player in his own right. (And he's not the most active player, as far as I know) I'm predicting the next character in this series to be Pichu, Lucario, or Duck Hunt. All mildly respectable characters, at least, but barely ever seen nowadays.

Of course, the Plant wasn't a fighter that I expected to appear in Smash, but when I played him and tested his moves for the first time, it really put a big smile on my face. I've been playing many Mario games during my life-time as well, but I've never thought that the Plant actually has so many moves from different games. And by experience his moves for the first time was a really big mind blow for me. Pirahna Plant is my absolute favorite character in Smash history. Not only because of his mindblowing moves, but also because he's really cute, awesome and hilarious. I only wish he also could got his own stage. Otherwise, the Plant is perfect. :D

I’m predicting next video to be “Why nobody plays ICs” Ice Climbers wasn’t too well received and is quite forgotten as an NES game (although I’d love to see a reboot), they play very fundamentally different to every fighter and they’re ridiculously difficult to play at top level, having to put more effort in with Desync tech to get results than other characters like Luigi or Lucina. The upside and the reason why I main them however is that they’re extremely sick and fun to play when you put in the effort to learn.

I had an idea to buff his horizontal projectile game His Side B poison cannot be used a second time while the poison is active, instead you spew a tiny wind box. What if that wind box could effect the poison cloud? And then you could blow it closer to your opponent (I'd say half the distance of FD)

I do find it pretty funny how good Piranha Plant is in Amiibo tournaments. Mainly because his poison breath isn't recognized by the AI, so they'll often stand in it for long periods of time

I think other than just gameplay, he doesn't get play because he's subjectively, not as stand out as the rest of the cast. I view characters in games as one of three types - character, avatar, or copy-paste. Characters are actual named characters such as Mario or Link, distinct visual design, and distinct stories. Avatars are fill in characters that allow for choice in visual representation and often flexible story. Examples are Miis, Villager, and Inklings. There's also the space between these, avatar characters, such as Byleth; you could reasonably call Byleth a character or an avatar. Plant though, fits the third group. Copy-paste. It's not a character or avatar, but rather, a repeated concept throughout the series, with no distinction from one to the next. Petey Piranha is a character, but Piranha Plants themselves are not. And that makes them just a little bit difficult to identify with and appreciate on a deeper level. Of course it doesn't apply to everybody, but it's often the case that people develop a somewhat emotional attachment to their mains. Copy-pastes might be fun to play, and a player might develop an emotional attachment to their kit or play style, but it's hard to establish a deeper emotional connection to them than that surface level "the kit is fun.". People got excited to see named characters and avatars announced as DLC, because of the emotional connections to those characters in games past.

I main Piranha Plant. He hits like a truck, and is hard to knock. His hidden bonus is that, if you do good with him, he tilts other players big time ("I can't believe I'm loosing to a joke character!"). He's really good at not just aerial, but area control in general. The paths his spike ball can take cover a surprising amount of area. Spitting one out and launching it quick will frequently hit someone coming at you from the other side of the arena. If you have time to set it up, the low ball launch can travel across entire small stages. He's a fun character to play.

Just so everyone is aware, you can throw the ball way farther if you let it fall closer to your mouth. It helps with some of the range and you can jump up to extend it. I really like piranha plant. Thank you for this video.

I really like playing Plant. Not because he's particularly good, but he's goofy and fun and I can't help but have a smile on my face. His moveset reinforces this goofy fun. He's very much an indication of how Sakurai intended Smash to be; not a professional competitive game, but a fun time to be had with friends.

I played plant day one as a joke, but grew to like them so much I've mained them ever since and I think you described plant pretty well. I tend to play more on the casual side but his awkward angles and good kill options of up smash, neutral b, and down b are actually really good in group matches, where you can hit a crowd of players easily from a distance and cause multiple kos at once. The high weight and good recovery also let him survive longer in a chaotic match. While he does struggle with zoners and brawlers a lot, especially in 1v1 matches, his group match ups are actually pretty good. plant gang!

As a plant main, I agree with the zoners problem, most of them can occupy a ridiculous amount of space in the battlefield, but at least most of this projectiles go to certain ranges and distances, all but Samus (Dark too), their projectiles can travel through the entire stage and at least for me, it's hard to confront them, especially spamming samus players

I feel like plant has a lot of hidden potential. He's my main, and I still find new, incredible things with him all the time. He just takes a really unorthodox playing style to make work. And, when he works, he DOES WORK SON!

The recent melee mod hewdraw remix (aka HDR) really fixes the issues plant has in vanilla ult and shows what the devs could've done to balance the plant

I love facing piranha plant as isabelle in elite smash. I once got 5 shield breaks in one game by pocketing his projectiles the player kept mashing

Man I haven’t played ultimate since before joker released. I do remember playing plant though had o lot fun but maybe thats cause of my love for spikes. Also half the skins are in pots the other half pipes. The pots have a slight angle on their edges and hole on the bottom.

The greatest why nobody plays would be banjo. Literally everybody was hyped, a ton of people said they'd main him. Yet nobody plays him now. It's all around his kit not his character. Despite his popularity, his kit/playstyle was so unfun and bad that nobody could even endure to play him seriously.

My brother and I play doubles online all the time and he uses plant fairly often. Having a teammate (who doesn't get hit by your projectiles) really helps plant's neutral

Another thing to consider is to even get the character now you have to buy specifically him. Since he's not part of a fighters pass that can be a bit of a hurdle for players. Tekken 7 had a similar issue with a character being Eliza. She was a preorder character who became a solo dlc, this and also because of her unorthodox playstyle made her pick rate low.

I play Pirahna Plant and I find his playstyle to be fun but like you say very bad, he's slow and his projectiles are not very good compared to other characters! but I am loyal to the Pirahna anyways so I will keep playing him

As someone who makes content off of Piranha Plant while also being one of the most active in the meta channels for the Piranha Plant discord, this does a pretty good take and tackles a good amount of what Plant has. His Jab is insanely good, albeit short distanced His Ftilt is unfortunately garbage due to hurtbox extension and down tilt being a much better option Down tilt being an above average poke and counter poke thanks to the buffs Uptilt being amazing despite the hurtbox extension Upair is an actual godsend and becomes better with slingshot, wish it lasted more Dair is crap lmao Fair is decent and the buff to startup was important and slingshot improves it Nair I believe is underrated when it comes to advantage but is average everywhere else His specials are good but lack in neutral, pls don't use lss it's a free lose button. Again I love this video as this is the most accurate Plant video I've found. Much love

I love to play PP probably one of my best picks since I got mythra in game I'm usually always on her. I think skill wise in order I'm aegis, link, pp, shulk, inceniroar. So i get that most people don't play him much which is sad and I'm glad you made the video on him

I don't know about any other plant mains, but I find two things people don't often mention. One, this character can trade like crazy, how often do I find myself in disadvantage for most of the stock and me and the opponent are around the same percent. The other, I love his down b (at least online), some people know how to deal with it well but I catch people jumping with it all the time

I'm really excited to see what competitive players (and myself but closer to the more local scene) will be able to do with slingshotting introduced by GimR. After experimenting with it on Plant, I think it can really give him that boost to his nuetrals (especially Ptooie) and make him an aggressive and advantageous character causing more people to pick him up.
