In a nutshell M$ Office. While the basic office apps are also in Linux Outlook with good exchange server support does not exist on Linux plus there are CTI type of apps for phone control and call center. I finished in the phone system work in 2017 and at that point there was only Windows app for call center like apps. I use mostly Windows those I do have a PVC running Mint and Windows 11 via a VM.

For call center, if you mean a PBX with a lot of power, there are multiple systems on Linux for that. FreePBX is the basis for many of them.

I wish you were correct. There is still too many "windows only" applications that stop people from switching. Every year or so, I attempt to replace my regular work laptop running Windows 10 to Linux and always have to switch back because the applications just don't work. Even using Wine, Lutris, CodeWeavers's garbage (that I paid for), etc. I'll give it a solid 4 to 8 hours and then give up. I'm a huge Linux advocate and Linux already rules the server space. On the gaming side, it's still extremely lacking. Maybe once Valve releases the Steam Deck OS, it'll get better, but even the computer sitting on the floor next to me (connect to a TV) for "console" style gaming, I spent 3 days trying to get stuff to work under Linux with NVidia's proprietary drives. Gave up, installed Windows 10 and Steam in big picture mode and had a full "console" style gaming experience going in less than 3 hours. And I'm completely comfortable in RH and Debian based distros, so I can only imagine what someone new to Linux would experience.

Everyone has a right to their opinion @dslynx and @notjustforhackers, There are som specialized applications for gamers / power users that you may not be able to get to run on Linux, and yes, NVidia drivers are a wreck, but that's a reason to not use NVidia cards at some point for me. Those applications aren't the majority of users in the world, nor is gaming. Most people check email and the web for social media. That's it. As for not being good for work, I, as a business owner, wouldn't let a Windows machine on my network. But, that's my opinion.

All true, but I don't think it's about porting existing Windows only apps to linux as much as it is about newer technologies in the development space being more cross platform. MS has no reason to make such tools, but google, Facebook, Apple, and yes, even Microsoft are making more open, cross platform capable development tools. I think this will be the thing that opens up the option more and more for Desktop Linux use. Look at where we are today compared to five years ago, and 10 years before that. It's a completely different world at this point.

The main problem with Linux these days is not necessary software. I mean substituting Adobe Suite for GIMP and others has somewhat of a learning curve but it is a clear path. What troubles me more is the driver issue. My experience is that for example most laptops don't enjoy long battery time under Linux. Switching the OS can sometimes cut battery time in half. It would be great to see an episode about drivers and overall Linux adoption from this point of view. BTW: great show, big fan :) Got bunch of production-level inspirations from you that work till this day on my servers.

First, thanks so much for watching! As far as linux and drivers, it's true some hardware is not well paired for Linux use (yet). But on laptops, there are some great power efficiency tools that you can get to help tune the power hungriness of the system. I think one thing that hurts battery life on Linux is that it doesn't pull anything back automatically. You get full force function out of the bo on most items. Windows and MacOS both give you reduced performance on a ton of the hardware when on battery power, and most people have no idea how to change all of it beyond what is made available through the settings pages. The tools I speak of on Linux will essentially help you do the same types of thing, but allow you to pick and choose more where you make your savings. I'll try to find some and cover them in the future.

There are only few things that can't cover some online gaming that use anticheat. And Adobe, Affinity, Apple, Autodesk, Microsoft products (except vscode). There are some windows exe that can run with WINE but not always.

The thing is giving those 90% a reason to switch that's meaningful to them. I've installed linux on some older computers for some people who were willing to deal with the learning curve and they are happy with it and have had others tell me they have no interest in switching OS's "just because". To most people who buy a PC with windows on it it might as well be free (even though the cost is baked into the price of the PC) and they generally don't care about FOSS , privacy or whatever. They just want to hop on their computer and get whatever they do done.

When I did support for people as a side business, the worst thing for my business was switching them to Linux. I generally went with Mint or Zorin, or a flabor that gave them a similar UX to Windows. I setup their shortcuts (I even made the icon for Firefox the Internet Explorer icon so they'd know how to get to the internet). I'd not hear from them for a year or more at a time, and then only heard from them when they'd get a notification about a new full release. Before that, with Windows, I made multiple service calls per month to fix the latest bit of whatever mess they had on their systems.

@@AwesomeOpenSource I've been doing support as a side thing for a long time, since windows 10 the most common issue I've seen is windows resetting various things after an update back to whatever the default app/setting is, mostly minor stuff but it is annoying. Compared to the windows 95/98 days it's relatively painless but most of the stuff I support doesn't get changed much after the initial installation break in period.

I made a similar video, I even used AI open-source software to help me make the video (and clickbait images!). Trying to convince Windows users to use Linux is hard work. You can serve Linux on a silver plater and they'd still stick with windows and complain about it. I make software, art, music and educational videos all for free using open-source software, and I'm loving it!

I still have to keep a windows box at home but moved my main workstation and laptop over to Pop OS. I have used Linux as a desktop in the past and use it (and FreeBSD) on servers so it's not like I was unfamiliar with it but compatibility with a few apps I need for work and a few games always kept me from switching at home. Windows 11 (I could see the where things were going with 10) finally got me over that. The hardest part was really picking a distro, tried a few before settling on Pop OS but Linux has made pretty good strides as a desktop OS since I last used it a couple of years ago, so far so good.

I'm thinking in these days to swap to linux, looking for the right distro. I think nowadays the question is not WHY NOT LINUX, but rather WHICH DISTRIBUTION SHOULD I CHOOSE? Not everyone has the desire/patience to keep changing distros until they find what they want, that's a big block I think. I was looking at Linux MX, it seems very popular, and has an eye for installing NVIDIA drivers, but I discovered by accident that installing certain drivers on linux can lead to "problems". I think a guide on what you need to know would also help you choose the right distro without any nasty surprises.

There are infinite guides. Keep it simple use something popular at first and easy to use I'd suggest mint or ubuntu. Choosing distributions right away is pointless imo you can always switch. As far as trying them out first theres lots of options tbh you can run them off a usb to try or use a vm or if you have a shit computer or not confident in doing all that theres websites like onworks or maybe its onlooks where you can try different ones in the browser....its not hard even the driver issues are minimal now for almost all

I thinkit's more about a bit of research up front. No need to distro-hop if you don't want to. there are liteerally hundreds of channels on KZbin that will give you incredibly detaiiled and up to date overviews of all the various distros and desktop environments. 1. Identify what you need from and OS. 2. Determine what you like in interaction (clean, minimal, keyboard driven, mouse driven, and so on) 3. See what software sources are supported (snap, flatpak, rpm, apt, and so on) 4. Find a distro that meets your needs. But, I may do a video on it at some point, so thanks for the suggestion. I agree. The real issue is 99.9% of machines sold, still today that aren't Macs, run Windows out of the box. That's what you buy on it, and you don't realize there are other options, or for that matter care. The vast majority of people simply don't know Linux is a thing. It's going to take some big manufacturers to start shipping a solid Linux distro and selling in stores like Best buy, Wal Mart, Costco, and so on. People will buy the machine, and never realize it's not Windows, or care, because again, they just use what it comes with and they just check their email and use the browser. How likely is it that will happen...well when I win the lottery that will be the business I invest in.

I am a Windows user, and for a very long time, I've wanted to switch to Linux. However, the only reason I haven't made the complete switch is due to performance issues. I am well aware that this doesn't make sense, and honestly, I don't understand what's happening. I have a Ryzen 3 3200G, a GTX 1060, and 8GB of RAM. For some reason, Windows gives me better performance, not only in gaming but also in basic tasks like opening a file manager or a web browser. The difference is significant, and it's the only thing holding me back from switching to Linux. Yes, I have updated the proprietary drivers for my GPU and followed instructions for each distribution when I've used Linux. I've also tried different distributions, thinking that might solve the issue, but it doesn't seem to be a problem with the distributions; it seems to be related to my hardware or something else. I've even tried using the integrated graphics of my CPU without using Nvidia, and it still gives me the same strange performance. Yes, I've used X11 for better support, but it doesn't seem to fix it. Is my hardware somehow incompatible with Linux, or is something else going on? I would appreciate a response because I really want to switch to Linux. Thank you!

Graphics-wise, NVidia isn't the best about helping out with the drivers on Linux. Not sure why, you'd thinkany market share is a good thing. None-the-less, definitely could be part of the issue. Sorry you've had such a bad experience with linux on your hardware.

I'm using Arch Linux + KDE in main machine but for some things Windows is necessary like VS Community. And I'm on Windows 11 Pro without account and paying and official ISO. Just choose format English (international) and validate woth online windows validators.

Its kernel was built by a team poached from DEC who had just written VMS, NT is from the ground up a 32 bit fully pre-emptive multi tasking protected mode operating system, in much the same way as modern Linux . I am not a Windows fan at all, but please try not to misinform as it detracts from an otherwise credible point of view.

Yeah, depending on which Distro you tried, you may not get all codecs automatically. Not sure what got some of the distros scared of the h264 codec, but for some reason a few removed it a couple of releases back. Anyway, generally VLC will play anything, so install it on your distro and give it a shot. As I said, it's not meant to be windows, and change is not easy. I wish it were more easy for sure,a nd definitely this was a step backward for Linux desktop IMO.

The issue I found with libre office is if others use some f*ed up formatting or whatnot, and either it looks broken when LO opens it. Or if it is broken when the other guy opens it, I am wrong, or I did something wrong. Believe me, ppl do some bats** crazy formatting. 99% of the time because thay don't know how to actually use office :angryface:. Sort-of works in MS office, drives you crazy in MS office when you want to do some proper editing or cleanup. Sometimes the original of some "corporate" template is older than my first car was, but they still use it 😢 Basically that lead me to actually buy office for my wife and myself. Oh, definitely has some really good features I used: equation editor, when I was creating docs at university. The csv import is way better, if you don't live in a country where csv actually means coma separated for example. Funny thing: teams web is better than the electron app in basically every OS I tried so far 😂

I worked on the Open Science Grid back in 2005, and we had some incredible 3D modeling software that we ran on Linux for modeling the proobably interactions of particles in the detectors for the Large Hadron Collider. They have some pretty nice stuff that's open source, but I suuppose it depends on what you're trying to do.

So now the Kernel developers refuse to implement a known fix for the hardware and ASUS has no interest in updating the BIOS.

The best Linux distro for the normal user is ChromeOS. It just works. I've tried to daily drive it just about every year since I installed slackware from a linux book at Barnes and Noble. While an enthusiast like us can do it, normal people shouldn't.

I have to disagree on both points. ChomeOS, while sitting on top of Linux, isn't a good distro in any way, as it ties you to google and online data acquisition. As for other distros, Slackware is not even close to the experience a person has today with LInux installation and use. My point isn't that Linux is easier or harder than any other distro, but that it's a viable alternative for anyone given it's maturity in late 2023.

Great video but there are still too many applications like adobe, autocad, solid works and the big list can go on. Not to mention gaming on linux. Don't tell me there are alternatives, I know that. The big question is not which distro but what software can I run on linux desktop? I am a heavy linux server user for 20 years, have a lot of servers for different purposes and services. I tried a lot of desktop flavors during the years but for desktop windows is windows, is just fine as long as you remove telemetry and other crap. Stil using dual boot for specific needs but in general windows desktop is fine as long as you know how to custom it to be as light as possible. I even used kvm with passthrough but unfortunately is not the same as native windows install.

I think the key here is that someone needs to know how to make Windows more secure by removing stuff from it vs. not having it in the first place in Linux. Gaming has come a long way and progresses further every month with Steam backing projects like Proton and the Steam Deck, and yes, some of the big shop specialty software like Adobe don't make a Linux version, but that's a bit of the chicken and the egg. They won't make it for Linux because their user base is on Windows, but the Windows users won't move because they don't make it for Linux.

I have been using linux on and off for years but I work frim home and need MS Office (Outlook, Teams etc) for work. For a while, i tried to make do by having a Windows VM in proxmox and using the VDI Client for spice to connect to it but the whole experience became very exhausting. These days i mostly use Wimdows for desktop as I work around 12 hrs a day but all my homelab is based on Linux (Unraid, Proxmox etc). I wish there was a way I could use MS Office apps natively on Linux.

@@12q8 Its unfortunate but for some reason, the web versions would not open on any Linux browsers including Edge for Linux. I even tried using crossover but the office 365 apps were very unstable. I was really hoping I could find something similar to Citrix where I can use these as vApps and have some kind of a native experience.

I use the O365 stuff for my work, and I have had no issues running it on my Ubuntu desktop through the browser. I'll admit, that the web versions of Word, Powerpoint, and excel are more limited, but unless you're doing power user stuff, it's not a hinderance. The Outlook web app is honestly better than the desktop app by a mile, and Teams is just an electron app no matter where you run it. There is an installable Teams app for Linux that works fine for me. Maybe a distro issue of some sort, but who can tell. Keep going back every few months and give it another try. Maybe you'll get to be in that all Linux, all the time world one day.

You can install something like popOS, get your web experience without even touching anything, libreoffice files that can be opened in microsoft office, games up and running, without ever touching the command line. Especially on laptops where most wifi drivers are already included in the kernel. The install experience isn't even that different from windows and actually takes a lot less. If you wanna talk about murdering free time trying to install shit and getting a brick, you're thinking of distros like arch and gentoo. Most people who only use their computers for browsing or watching tiktok or whatever will have zero difference in their user experience minus windows 11 desktop popups and forced updates.

I think you statement is a bit generalized. It will absolutely depend on which distribution you choose, and which desktop environment you choose. The KDE and Gnome experiences, while very different from each other, are extremely smooth and streamlined. Maybe it's time to give it another shot?

Yes, it would be nice to have developers using more cross platform development tools, but until the user base starts to move toward linux more, the developers aren't incentivized to develop for linux. There are 2 ways to look at it. Ableton is great, but perhaps there is a linux based option that would work just as well for you and others.

One of the problems with Ableton is its paid software. The company makes its money by selling it. Most of the Linux apps are free and open source. The 2 models don't really fit. On a positive note though emulators like Wine, which allow Win .exe's to run in Linux are getting much better. There is some way to go though. I haven't tried Serato DJ in wine for some time but the last time I did it was unusable. The software would open and run but access to drives didn't work and external controllers were not detected. On the switch side the FOS tools available just don't cut it in terms of functions and features. Why would they? They are largely developed by a person or people that give up their time and skills for free. Constantly upgrading and updating software is time consuming and I doubt many of the developers of fos apps are financially independent enough to spend the time to create and maintain such polished apps as Ableton or Serato. If you start getting "paid" versions of software for Linux then its kinda going against the point and you just end up with another MacOS or Android which are both "commercial" os based on Linux.

The most games run on Linux with proton right out of the box... of corse there are a cupple of games who dont run that well and you might spend more time to get them run. I use PopOS since 2019 as my daily driver. I wouldn't get back to windows or mac. You really should give it a try :D

I literally walked a customer through the initial setup without the M$ account yesterday. The easiest way to get around it is to NOT connect to the internet on the initial install, it will let you create a local user. 36:44 , What are you talking about? There is Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server, not to mention over 500 active flavors of Linux (per Tecmint). I'm all for promoting Linux, and I love it. It's okay to have your opinion, but if you walked someone through installing Windows 11 Home (even without an internet connection) to get a local account, I have to see the recording to believe it. I've literally done it 5 times this week alone, and you do not get a local account option without disabling the OOBE. In windows 10, you did, but no longer is that an option on Windows 11 Home. @36:44 I'm explaining that for a distro like Ubuntu, you just get Ubuntu Desktop if that's what you need, There's no Home, Pro, Enterprise, Business levels to it. Yes there are tons of distros, and desktop environments, but when you choose one, that's it. There aren't generally 4 or 5 different versions of it to then choose from with limited features etc.

@@AwesomeOpenSource OOOhhh.. Maybe it's a Windows 11 Home thing. I only deal with Windows 11 Pro because I only deal with business environments. Again, I'm all for promoting Linux and have been running it on servers for as long as I can remember. I wish it was in a state to replace the average users' desktop and Like I said in my other comment, fingers crossed that when Steam Deck OS comes out, it can make a dent in the gaming market.

There are tons of people now who just want to help others enjoy Linux as much as they do. The old guard that was elitist, i not the majority any more, and I really love to see that. I dont agree with your view on updates. Linux updates in my opinion more than often breaks something sometime. Just this week an Ubuntu update broke one of my VMs, stuck on bootup and with no amount of googling I could get it fixed.

I'm really sorry to hear that you experienced that. It does suck when that happens. I've been running the same install of Ubuntu on the machine I'm writing this on for almost 3 years now, and just updated and upgraded right along with no issues. That doesn't fix your problem, however.

Yup, just like on Android, I don't recommend hitting that "update all" button. If you do, and something breaks, you don't know what you installed that broke it. If you update individual packages and their dependencies, you'll at least know what caused it to break and be able to roll that specific package back. But, at the same time, Windows has been known to bluescreen computers after updates as well, so there really isn't a prefect answer.
