I have no interest in Batgirl. However, I was annoyed when I learned that Warner Bros. had decided not to release Coyote vs. ACME. A legal comedy-drama about Wile E. Coyote suing ACME for all the injuries he sustained due to their defective products is intriguing. In an age filled with sequels and remakes, this is the most original idea I've encountered in a long time.

James Gunn was one of its producers. It was definitely better than Space Jam 2 and was probably better than the first one. Basically - it was the best Looney Tunes live-action-animation hybrid to date and they deleted it. P.S. also, how often do we have movies of that genre releasing at all? Very rarely.

I absolutely love the Looney Tunes characters and all the old cartoons. I have no curiosity, when it comes to a Modern Hollywood interpretation. Nothing good has come from that franchise since the early 90s, and since the terrible idea to cast LeBron James and Space Messiah from Star Trek and then cancel Pepe le Pew a few years ago, I, for one, will watch none of it anyway.

I own a very small production company that makes commercials, in my own environment I couldn’t ever imagine releasing something that I wasn’t convinced would do the job or solve the problem we set out to address. It’s the same thing with films. You are crafting a tool for viewers to use. If your tool doesn’t do the job well, it’s better to scrap it and start over than it is to keep polishing a turd.

The tax write off got them more money than releasing it would. If a movie or TV show can't drive NEW subscriptions, even if only for the release month, then it's a 100% loss. That's why the current streaming model is financially unviable for expensive new content. It's why they had to ad commercials and will certainly add more. Budgets will come down to broadcast TV levels because that's what it actually is replacing. It was fine when Netflix was the only game in town and primarily airing reruns. It was at the DVD set level, which makes sense considering how the company started. Shows need to make their production budget back somehow.

It seems to me that 90% of the people declaring "Batgirl" to be utterly awful never actually saw it, and were only relying on, "Well, I heard it from this guy, who heard it from this guy..." I'm no tax expert, but if making a profit is the sticking point with the IRS, why not just give "Batgirl" and "Coyote vs. Acme" away for free to whichever distributor wants to chance it? Or just put them up on KZbin, no charge? Is it absolutely required that the movies never be shown, EVER, or is it just that no money can be made? And, contrary to the studio rep quoted here, there's nothing "brave and courageous" about plain old censorship. Fortunately, "The Day the Earth Blew Up", another WB animated movie, managed to escape being put into IRS imprisonment.

First you have to remember that Studios are companies, and they see each other as rivals/competition. No way they are giving any freebies to another studio without anything in return. Just not how business is done. Second, giving away a finished movie would be giving away free money. The studio that would receive the movie would make instant profit considering they didn't have to pay a single dime for production costs, and would only have to do minimal marketing for them to make a nice chunk of change. No way WB wants that for a perceived rival. Third, due to all the bad press surrounding the decisions any release now just does damage to brand (if its good it hurts WB's brand, if it is bad that hurts DC) and creates unnecessary competition to James Gunn's reboot of the DC universe.

If the movie does get leaked at some point, then how would anti-piracy laws apply to an IP that was never allowed to be released, against the the wishes of the majority of its creators? The corporation couldn't claim that the pirates were depriving them of the profits from something that they weren't selling in the first place. 🏴‍☠

The deprivation of profit isn't what makes piracy illegal. It's the unlawful acquisition of the product that makes it illegal. According to the Legal Encyclopedia of Cornell Law School, Piracy is "An infringement , usually intentional , of the intellectual property rights of others, such as unauthorized copy of book or movie." WB still owns the full rights to the Movie IP (regardless of the wishes the majority of it's creators) and since WB plans to never release the film that means there is no way to get the movie through any legal means, therefore any acquisition would be considered piracy and punishable under law.

Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth said that in between Watershed and Heritage they wrote an entire album of music in the same vein as Watershed, and scrapped it to go in a completely different direction. Watershed was already a significant departure from the sound of the four previous albums. I would LOVE to hear that scrapped album.

Batgirl was part of an attempt to use Keaton Batman PERMANENTLY. THE FLASH film was supposed to introduce Keaton Batman as a permanent member, the prologue of the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. It was these rumors that FORCED MCU to go FULL-ON “multiverse.” This FORCED them to change NO WAY HOME from Sinister 6 vs. Spider-Man to “spiderverse” and to have SECRET WARS be the MCU’s next biggest film.

I remember someone who managed to watch the very last screening of the movie, he said it looked like a pilot movie for a CW series. I know that Warner executives absolutely love to meddle with their movies, usually making them worse because they don't understand the vision of the creatives behind it, but in this case it was the right thing to do.

In a world where the Snyder Cut was finally released after being told for years that it didn't exist and would never be released, even if the film isn't good, I do hope we get to see Batgirl. Hell, David Ayer's true vision of Suicide Squad has still yet to see the light of day and many still hope to see that released. Batgirl would just need that level of fandom interest.

Due to Warner Bros. deciding to use Batgirl as a tax write off, there’s no reason to ever release it in any fashion, not even as a Blu-Ray release. Even if they were to release it, and despite what the woman in the Art Department did, the directors have actually said a lot would have to be done with the VFX as well as a few more scenes to be shot to make the film whole, which would corroborate what multiple people have said about the state of the film, particularly regarding the effects not being finished.

Batgirl wasn't fully filmed. It was about 75% filmed. The music score hadn't been added, and almost no effects had been done. It was raw, unedited, and unfinished. So it isn't even close to being in a releasable condition. Then there is the tax write off status. WBD would have to pay back the tax benefit they got if they released it. Also, the film was said to be pretty woke, and not very good. And finally, people say that WBD deleted the files anyway. Unlike Snyder or Ayer, the directors don't have copies of the files. Unless someone at WBD managed to keep a copy and bootlegs it online, no one will ever see it.

The way it works in the US is that if you take a tax write off, you can’t use the thing you took a tax write off on. Technically you still own it, but really it’s more of a liability than anything else. As you said, if it gets shown *to ANYONE, even in the studio,* there’s a million dollar fine. If it gets leaked, the studio has to give back the full value of the tax write off, probably with a substantial fine on top of that. So if it’s leaked they could end up paying like 110 million dollars or more. If they decide to release it, then they have to give back the tax write off credit, meaning it costs them $90 million for a movie everyone has already agreed is just not worth. So in situations like this, they generally just destroy the film rather than risk the leak. This is different than the case with the Snydercut. In that case, there was no tax writeoff. The original rough cut of the movie was on servers, and was essentially stolen off of them prior to that material being wiped by Warners. The Whedon cut was the only version they had, apart from a few odds and ends. When there was interest in the Snydercut, the stolen download was eventually given back, finished, and expanded. But since there were not tax write offs in that ccase, the Batgirl example doesn’t apply at all. The case with Coyote vs. ACME is weird, though. Advance screenings for that one were really good, and everyone was looking forward to it. I don’t get the reasoning there.

This was being made at the time DC WB was planning on changing the DC Trinity Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman into Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman. We saw the start of that in Flash, and we don't know how much of that was baked into Batgirl. Rumors were that the Michel Keton Batman was going to pass torch to this version of Batgirl supporting the theory of all female DC Trinity. At the time of the cancelation there was the fear of "Brand damage" this movie would cause. Now we may never know how much of these things the Batgirl movie is guilty of. Frankly considering atmosphere and mindset that creatives had at the time, I'm glad it got cancelled and would be happy to never hear about it again.,

I have read the opposite from people who worked on the film said almost none of CGI was finished and the movie needed a reshoots. But that they did say the principal and secondary shooting was finished and just needed the remaining polish. The only way this movie gets leaked is if Warner Brothers gets hacked. But even that is unlikely as the film may have been put on HD (most likely magnetic back up tape) and would require physical theft to leak it. I suspect if it ever were leaked or released people would complain that they waited all this time and movie was just as terrible as studio said.

Batgirl would have over performed the flash in sales. The only reason anyone saw flash was because of Keaton. No one wanted a movie with Ezra king db miller. He single handedly sank that film. Batgirl would have also had the added bonus of creating a new DC hero.

I've seen the 1994 Fantastic 4 in its entirety (the full movie used to be on KZbin), and it was a "so bad it's good" movie. That's a hard mark to hit, honestly. When you start to dip below mediocre you just get into "bad movie" territory, and the chasm between "bad" and "so bad it's good" is very, VERY wide. If the cancelled Batgirl movie is on par with Halle Berry's 2004 Catwoman, I honestly think it's better if it remains unleaked 😅
